Read article : Lindfield century-old cottage redesigned for 2017
STEEPED in history, this heritage-listed, century-old cottage in Lindfield is perfect for those who are ready to slow down.
But being “historic” doesn’t mean it’s dilapidated in any way, shape or form. Quite the opposite, the five-bedroom house was renovated extensively, but sympathetically, in 2013 by architect Michael Bell.
The result? A sophisticated family home loaded with charm from a bygone era, redesigned for modern living.
Built in 1890, the 1625-sqm property at 78 Provincial Rd was named Cheltenham after the English town where the original owner came from.
The late-Victorian appeal can already be felt from the facade, with the veranda, the corrugated iron roof and sandstone details.
Wasting no time, the formal loungeroom and dining room is the first space you will see upon entering.
Through the hallway, the kitchen, living and dining area continues to impress with its coffered ceilings, a liberal use of glass and a gas fireplace.
The Carrera marble is everywhere in the kitchen: on the island breakfast bar, benchtops and even the splashbacks over the freestanding Ilve stove. A walk-in pantry is beside the kitchen.
The open-plan space flows out to the wraparound terrace. A block of lawn separates the main house from the detached studio with ensuite and the cabana with kitchenette. Both overlook the swimming pool.
A downstairs bedroom with an ensuite is another option for guests.
On the upper level, three bedrooms can be found.
The main has a walk-in wardrobe, which leads into the ensuite with shower and his-and-hers sinks. There is also a main bathroom with a freestanding bathtub.
The remaining two bedrooms on this level have built-in wardrobes.
The house was scheduled for auction on August 26 with a price guide of $4.5 million, but sold prior to that through Virginia Byrne, of McConnell Bourn.
