Read article : sewing: upcycled bath mat tutorial
I’m still easing into the new year with some easy and practical projects… this upcycled bath mat is definitely something we’ve been needing, and it was a breeze to make after I read how on Showerheadly.com.
even though I was tempted to just pick up a new bath mat at the store, I was inspired to upcycle this project by the Thrifty January Blog Hop. a little over two years ago, I made this bath mat for our main bathroom and we STILL use it. (wow, I can’t believe it’s been that long!) so it made perfect sense to do something similar for the girls’ bathroom.
materials
- old towel
- fabric (amount depends on size of bath mat)
- rotary cutter
- safety pins
- sewing machine and notions
- serger (optional)
one
cut towel and fabrics to size. You can make your upcycled bath mat any size your old towel allows and your bathroom requires! Match your towel with a heated towel rack for the best out-of-shower experience.
in this example, I cut the towel and fabrics to 21×24″, which works well for our bathroom, plus I was able to get it out of an old face & hand towel and some large scraps of fabric I had available.
two
sandwich towel between layers of fabric, with wrong side of fabric up against towel on each side as shown.
three
baste layers together with safety pins. at this point, you could do some quilting if desired, but you can also keep it quick and skip it.
four
(optional) serge all four edges, making sure to catch all layers. I find that this makes it easy (and quick) to stitch on the binding without pinning.
five
binding… this tutorial by Elizabeth Hartman explains how to make and sew binding, so I won’t repeat that here. I used straight grain fabric strips 3-3/4″ wide and stitched the binding 1/2″ from the raw edge of the fabric for a thicker binding than I typically use on quilts.
bonus! this bath mat is reversible. a compromise, because one girl wanted horses and the other wanted tigers.
