How to fix up my bathroom on the cheap? - DIY house remodeling

Read article : How to fix up my bathroom on the cheap? - DIY house remodeling
I bought a small, vintage (1940s) house last fall (yay!) and am looking for advice on how to fix some issues in my only bathroom by myself, within a budget. I'm fairly handy, but not experienced. Help!

I've already had a plumber replace the old faucets and toilet. The tile floor is in decent shape (replaced probably in the 1980s or 90s) The cabinet needs paint, but the sink/vanity countertop is newish (same vintage as floor).Problems:* The walls are an ugly yellowish off-white. I want to paint them, and paint the cabinets a contrasting shade. Should I pay someone to do this, or attempt it myself? I hate painting, but I know I need to prioritize paying people to do stuff I really can't or won't do by myself.
* Grout is missing in some places and badly mildewed in others. Should I just clean and re-grout? Any product recommendations? [pic]
* Part of the tile around the newly replaced tub spigot has caved in. There's an eighth-inch gap in the tile. Should I just caulk it with tub & tile stuff and move on? See pictures here and here.
* Do I have to remove the old caulk first? If so, what's the best way?
* I'd love to have a shower door instead of a curtain... is installing one of those a feasible solo DIY job, or should I pay someone to do it?
* Previous renovators decided to paint over the border tile, which was black. Some has chipped off in several places - picture here. Do I just repaint with some (special?) paint? Other options?
* The tub - original from the 40s - is rusted and encrusted under the lip [pic]. Should I pumice that off? Caulk it? Get a pre-fab plastic thing installed? (kidding... mostly)
* The radiator is painted, with lots of craters and rusty places [pic]. What's the best course of action here - I have zero interest in doing a lot of sanding. Should I get some kind of paint remover? Again, is this a job for a pro instead? Thanks in advance for your advice!

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — Abu Dhabi’s national carrier, Etihad, showcased on Thursday the arrival of its first Airbus A380, outfitted with “the only three-room suite in the sky.”

The A380 is the first of a fleet of 10 on order from Etihad Airways, which is to take delivery of four more of the double-decker jets next year.

The A380 will operate daily to London Heathrow starting Dec. 27 and features “The Residence by Etihad” — a three-room suite, complete with a living room, a private bathroom with shower and a bedroom, as well as a dedicated butler at the very front of the plane’s upper deck. The 11.6 square metre (125 square foot) cabin is for single or double occupancy.

The airliner says the suite has already been booked for its inaugural flight to London. The company’s executives previously said that the suite was expected to be priced at $21,000 — one way.

The fast-growing Gulf carrier has a fleet of 109 aircraft, and more than 200 aircraft on firm order.

The airline also showcased Thursday its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which will begin flying to Dusseldorf, Germany, on Feb. 1. It will offer high-end travellers a suite with a chilled mini-bar and seats that can be joined to create a double bed.

The company said that three more of the Dreamliners are expected to be delivered in 2015.

Etihad President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan said that despite some delays with the 787 due to a variety of glitches, he is “very confident that the issues they have had have been resolved.”

Etihad said that Abu Dhabi-based FGB and The National Commercial Bank of Saudi Arabia will provide financing for the purchase of a number of its Boeing 787 aircraft. It also received financing from Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank for its first Airbus A380 aircraft.

Photo Shower Curtains: Hang Your Favorite Images In The Bathroom

Read article : Photo Shower Curtains: Hang Your Favorite Images In The Bathroom

photoshowercurtains

Want a shower curtain that's a little more personal than the normal variety you can pick up in stores?  You can troll the kitschy bathroom decor sites, of course, and find an occasional gem (like this Periodic Table of Elements), but none of what you'll find will ever carry that intimate character which makes it all yours.

Photo Shower Curtain serves that need, churning out 100% custom prints based on images you send their way.  Want to shower alongside your favorite work of art?  A picture portait of Megan Fox, perhaps, to inspire you to clean those nooks and crannies (in case you ever get a girl like that ripping your clothes off)?  Maybe a shot from your last family vacation on the sandy beaches of Hawaii?

Whichever photograph you choose (at least 2 megapixels with clear focus required), simply send them in when you place your order.  Using a sublimation process that integrates images into fabric, the company can produce your one-of-a-kind shower curtain with a permanent print that looks as amazing as the photograph it came from.  According to the site, all their curtains are made from 100% polyester poplin, which can be laundered with no danger of fading or shrinking.

If you're performing custom decors and other similar personalized styling to your bathrooms, you can discuss particular curtain designs with the company's in-house artists to score some ideas.  Single orders go between $149 to $199, with a two to four week delivery schedule.  Multiple orders, in case you want to commission a few hundred shower curtains with your face on it (or that awesome Periodic Table of Superheroics), are priced depending on quantity, with a delivery spread of four to eight weeks.

50 cheap and chic ways to perk up your bathroom

Read article : 50 cheap and chic ways to perk up your bathroom
Giving your bathroom a facelift doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, you can do it on a dime, without compromising style. Here are 50 cheap and chic ways to update one of the most used rooms in the house.

1 Repaint – nothing perks up a room like a fresh coat of paint.

2 Invest in new towels to replace any that are looking worse for wear.

3 If you’re running out of space to store toiletries, keep the overflow in a rustic wooden bowl or wicker basket.

4Declutter. Clearing off the surface of your bathroom counter does wonders for making the room look fresh and clean.

5 Install new faucets for a quick upgrade.

6Add fresh flowers.

7 Opt for colourful towels if your bathroom walls are a neutral colour.

8 Play with patterns without having to turn to wallpaper or a new paint job with inexpensive wall decals.

9Floating candles in a glass bowl on the counter add warmth.

10 Toiletries in beautiful packaging can go a long way to pretty up your counter.

11 Replace your shower curtain.

12 Place a tall vase filled with dried flowers on the floor for some rustic charm.

13 Incense in an ornate holder is functional and decorative.

14 Line the counter with matching accessories (toothbrush holder, soap dispenser) ideally from the same line, for a uniform look.

15 Install a floating shelf above the toilet and line with small plants that don’t require a lot of light.

16
Shampoo, conditioner and soap dispensers eliminate clutter around the tub.17 Place a small stool in one corner of the bathroom and neatly stack towels on it.

18 Search out some interesting hooks for bath towels.

19 Room diffusers are both decorative and do a lot to refresh the room.

20 A wall-mounted magazine rack creates space.

21 House extra rolls of toilet paper in a ceramic pot or urn.

22 Find a new use for an old chair by painting it a bright colour and stacking magazines on it.

23 Line drawers with pretty wallpaper samples.

24 Fill a square, glass container with shells you or your kids have collected from various family vacations.

25
Group candles of varying sizes around the bathtub for instant ambiance.

26
Tie colourful ribbon around small groupings of rolled up neutral-coloured hand towels. Display on the counter.

27 Put a small shelf behind the toilet to store books.

28 Frame a piece of corkboard and use it to house your jewellery. Chances are you’re probably choosing accessories at the same time you’re applying make-up.

29
Frame vacation photos of the beach or waterfalls for some aqua-themed style.

30 Clear up clutter around the tub with a simple shower caddy.

31 If there is a window in your bathroom, add plants for a nice splash of green in your space.

32 Stagger towel hooks for an asymmetrical display of bath towels, ideally in graduating shades of the same colour.

33 Purge all the junk that’s accumulated in the drawers of the vanity. No wonder you can’t find the tweezers!

34 If you have kids, avoid countertop chaos by assigning each their own toiletries basket. There are many inexpensive options at most home decor stores.

35 Treat yourself to a bamboo bath caddy, with spots for a book, candle and glass of wine.

36 Clean out the medicine cabinet regularly to avoid a pile-up of expired creams and capsules.

37 Do away with the ratty bath mat and replace it with something plush and soft.

38 Line the back of the counter with small glass bottles and place a fresh cut flower in each.

39 Clean the bathroom from top to bottom to make it sparkle.

40 Add artwork if you have the wall space.

41 A stack of three neatly folded black or charcoal towels on a white countertop makes a style statement, so long as the counter is clear of clutter.

42 Replace an over-the-sink medicine cabinet with one that fits tightly in the corner if you can. Install an elegant mirror in its place.

43 Store the little things (hair elastics, lip gloss) in a pretty box or basket with a lid to avoid a tidal wave of trinkets taking over the counter.

44 House make-up in a vintage-inspired jewellery box.

45 Remove the door to one cabinet and show off your prettiest toiletries and perfume bottles.

46 Get rid of any cleaning products you have lying around. Store these under the sink in the kitchen.

47 Put a small end table beside the tub (of the same height) and use it to house your bath towel while you’re soaking.

48 Install new knobs or pulls on cabinets. Brushed metal is a stylish option.

49 Put dimmers on light fixtures so you have the option of softer lighting.

50 Try to keep clutter off your counter all the time, not just when company’s coming.

Pick and choose from this list as a way to continually upgrade your bathroom and keep it looking tidy and fresh.

Whether you enjoy singing in the shower or you require some mindless noise to drown out your thoughts at the end of a long day, Bluetooth speakers can help you do both.

Though you test its limits almost daily, your smartphone isn't meant to endure excessive shower steam.

A waterproof speaker is the logical next best thing. And the market for affordable portables is plentiful. MiiKey's compact, waterproof Bluetooth speaker is an appealing option for $25, down from its sticker price of $50.

Its shatter-resistant rubber exterior can manage spills, splashes, and tumbles easily, while still streaming your playlists. Its buttons can also control your Bluetooth-enabled media, as well as calls, making it a convenient tool. However, its battery life averages only at about 3 hours, but the device’s small size and price make up for this shortcoming.

All in all, the waterproof speaker is worth a look if you want to buy something cheap and effective for your bathroom. If you're inclined to spend a bit more for a different color — StackSocial's deal includes black and red versions — you can also find it on Amazon.

Meet the young activist who fought for a condom dispenser in every bathroom

Read article : Meet the young activist who fought for a condom dispenser in every bathroom

#WeArePP: Our Stories from AK to AZis a weekly blog series in which we profile supporters and advocates from across the country and every corner of our Planned Parenthood community. This week we sat down with Alba Alvarado, a California native who passed a transformative sex education policy in her hometown school district.

Meet Alba Alvarado. She’s a fearless advocate for women’s health, a first-generation college student, a leader in Latino communities — the list goes on.

Perhaps her most impressive accomplishment to date? She proposed a condom accessibility policy in the San Rafael, California school district during her senior year at San Rafael High School — and it passed.

Thanks to Alvarado, condom and STD pamphlets are available in high school bathrooms throughout San Rafael. But getting there was a personal, often difficult process.

“When I was nine, I became an aunt. My brother was 17 or 18 and in high school — yet he became a father,” Alvarado said. “Once I got to high school, I was still seeing many girls leave school to have babies before graduation. They were not emotionally or financially prepared to be mothers.

“My freshman year, around 12 girls became pregnant and left school. That’s how normalized unplanned teen pregnancy was — especially for Latinas, who often have less access to affordable health care,” she said.

Alvarado decided to take matters into her own hands. With the help of peers, teachers, and Next Generation Scholars (a first-generation college access nonprofit), the then-high school senior wrote a policy and pitched it to the school board.

“I called it ‘The Condom Project.’ No fancy names,” Alvarado said.

YOU get a condom, and YOU get a condom!

She urged the school board to make condoms accessible for students by installing condom dispensers. She did research. She gave presentations. She taught sex education classes at neighboring schools. She handed out thousands of condoms to her peers — so many that they started calling her “the human condom machine.”

Almost a year and a half later, Alvarado’s proposal passed — but unfortunately without any funding. In support of the policy, the National Coalition of STD Directors contacted Alvarado and coordinated with Trojan Condoms to donate 20,000 condoms to the San Rafael school district.

One of Alba's condom dispensers installed.

Today, Alvarado is a sophomore at Wesleyan University, where she continues to advocate for sex education and reproductive health. As a member of Adolescent Sexual Health Awareness (ASHA) on campus, she teaches consent-based, medically accurate sex ed classes in low-income school districts in Connecticut.

And she doesn’t plan to stop her work anytime soon.

“I found this passion for reproductive health with my condom project, and that continues to grow every day,” Alvarado said.

Read more of our interview with Alba below

PPAF:You just finished your freshman year at Wesleyan. How’d it go?

AA: I’m a first-gen college student, and never did I ever think I’d be somewhere like Wesleyan. For a long time it seemed so unrealistic. But I made it, and it’s been so amazing!

Wesleyan could be more diverse, but the POC that are there are so empowering. I’m constantly trying to be more, I guess, “woke.” I’m trying to be more confident and outspoken as a woman of color. Surrounding myself with people like that at Wesleyan has been so inspirational to me. I’ve already grown so much.

PPAF:Do you know what you’re going to major in yet?

PPAF:That’s a lot! Besides ASHA, are you involved with any clubs at Wesleyan?

AA:Yeah! I was part of First Things First, a pre-orientation for first-gen students. It was the first opportunity for me to find my people. We ended up sticking together, and all joined Ajua Campos, which is the Latinx organization on campus. It focuses on empowering Latinx people and building our community. During the election, it was a really big support system for a lot of us, since it felt like the world was ending.

Alba and friends making a statement on campus.

PPAF:So since the election, has your attitude changed at all in terms of fighting back?

AA:At first, we just needed to take the time to support each other and mourn. It really felt [like] something had died. Not that we haven’t had bad presidents before, but you have to wonder, how could people vote for a person like [Trump]

Afterwards, a lot of us were like, “we have to take action immediately!” So we had protests and marches on campus, one of the first political demonstrations I participated in. I also went to the Women’s March in San Francisco later on.

A lot of people may think that protests accomplish nothing. But a big part of making change is speaking out and being heard. [Protests are] also a chance for people to go out and express themselves.

Alba at the Women's March.

PPAF: You’ve mentioned that you’re a first-generation college student. What was your college application process like?

AA:I was very fortunate to be part of a first-gen college access program called Next Generation Scholars (NGS). I joined when I was in seventh grade. Along with my parents, this organization raised me like a second family. I had the privilege of surrounding myself with really outspoken people of color and strong women and men who have made it out of cycles of poverty. They gave me resources, from helping me edit college application essays to helping me shop for my dorm room.

But even with the incredible privilege of having NGS’s help, it was still hard. Like explaining to my parents what financial aid was, or what I want to major in. For many immigrant parents it’s like, “Are you going to be a doctor or a lawyer?”

PPAF: You moved from the west coast to New England. Do ever get homesick?

AA:Yeah. Another thing is seeing people from school and some of my friends get left behind. It’s really hard, sometimes, sitting at Wesleyan and thinking back to the people I know who are still in cycles of poverty.

It can be hard knowing your classmates have had private school education — or even just better public school education than you had. There have been days where I’ve cried, thinking I don’t belong here. For a lot of first-gen students, you’re working twice as hard to be in the same place as your more privileged peers. That really gets to you, especially during the harder times like midterms and finals.

In the end, though, I know that I’m not just here for myself. I’m here for my family, my friends, and my community.

"I’m not just here for myself. I’m here for my family, my friends, and my community."

PPAF:You’re in Washington, D.C. this summer, doing an internship. What made you want to come to the nation’s Capitol?

AA:I continued to stay in touch with the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), and through them I was able to [get featured in] a couple pieces in magazines like Glamour. Then one of their employees was like, “If you’re interested, we can make an internship happen.” I saw that as an opportunity, and I never let that go! Now that [the NCSD and I] have been working together for a couple years, they’ve definitely seen me grow. It’s been incredible to have their help, and now help them continue to provide people with sexual health resources.

PPAF:And what do you think about D.C.?

AA:It’s definitely got its perks! It’s pretty. It looks like you’re constantly looking at a postcard, even though it’s so hot and humid. I just love being in the center of politics, and how there’s always something going on. And it’s definitely a money place.

PPAF:Yeah, I believe it’s one of the most expensive places to live in the country.

AA:I had never seen so much privilege and money — ever. It’s crazy.

PPAF:Intersectionality has become important to Planned Parenthood, but that hasn’t always been the case. How can progressive organizations better incorporate intersectionality in their cause?

AA:It’s all about the people in charge being a more diverse group. I think for some people, “diverse” automatically means people of color. But we also need to focus on people with disabilities, and queer and trans people. There are so many kinds of people that need to be represented. That type of diversity is an advantage at organizations like Planned Parenthood.

PPAF:Can you think of a time when diversity has been done successfully?

AA:Sure. [At Wesleyan,] we read a book called “This Bridge Called My Back.” Everyone should definitely check it out! It’s a collection of texts and poems by different women of color, from all different backgrounds. It was the first time I saw myself and the experiences I’ve had represented in text.

It was also the first time I got to learn about my people’s history. The Chicana movement, the Latinx movement, civil rights, you name it. But I also learned about Pacific Islander women, Native American women, Asian women, Black women. Basically all the intersections people have to deal with — and what feminism is really about.

Alba and some of the mentors who helped her with her project.

PPAF:This August marks the fifth anniversary of the implementation of DACA. Why is it important more than ever to protect this law?

AA:Like we saw in Charlottesville, it’s obvious that there are many people out there who don’t think people of color or undocumented people...are people. They don’t see us as equals, and I honestly don’t know if they ever will. It’s so, so frustrating. We’re not “illegals,” we’re not “aliens,” we’re all the same.

DACA’s not as great as it could be. I think we all know that. But it’s definitely a good start. And it’s giving people access to the resources America claims are for everyone. A lot of immigrants are fleeing terrible, unimaginable situations in other countries. But DACA gives them hope for the first time.

Alba celebrating her heritage.

PPAF:What’s your dream job? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

AA:My friends and family are always like, “You overthink stuff! You’re always planning ahead!”

PPAF:Planning ahead is good, though!

AA:Yeah! I guess I have to remind myself that some things you can’t plan. I did not think I would be interning in D.C. this summer, for example. Not because I doubted I was capable, but because I didn’t know there were opportunities like this for people like me.

That being said, I’m definitely going to finish my undergrad in four years. Then I want to spend two to three years working in D.C. — hopefully at a place like Planned Parenthood. Then I want to go to graduate school. I’m thinking about a dual program in business and public health.

I guess ultimately I want to be giving back to a place like from where I came from. I want to help immigrant communities, first-gen students, people with low incomes, queer people of color, basically every underrepresented community you can think of.

Homeless camp to city of Berkeley: We want a bathroom

Read article : Homeless camp to city of Berkeley: We want a bathroom

On Saturday, about 100 people showed up to an “emergency town hall” called by Berkeley Councilman Ben Bartlett to discuss an encampment of homeless activists that has been allowed to remain at its Berkeley-Oakland border site for several months. A few neighbors raised concerns about the camp, which is located under the “Here There” sculpture on Adeline Street, but most made emphatic arguments in support of the city providing a portable toilet at the site, or at least signing off on the group’s plan to fundraise for and buy one itself.

Members of First They Came for the Homeless, the group of about 25 homeless people protesting the city’s treatment of homeless residents, have been petitioning Berkeley for a portable bathroom and garbage collection at the encampment for some time. The effort has earned support from dozens of neighbors and local business owners, some of whom view an onsite sanitation facility as a humanitarian obligation. Others say it would take the burden off of the neighbors who currently help collect the group’s trash and offer up their bathrooms.

“There is no benefit to anybody to deny them Porta-Potties,” said Carole Marasovic, chair of Berkeley’s homeless commission, at the town hall.

A number of neighbors said on Saturday that they would help the group buy a bathroom. First They Came for the Homeless also held a “Party for a Potty” earlier in July, where they raised several hundred dollars. At the town hall, Aaron Nassberg, the owner of neighboring gallery and tattoo parlor Modern Electric Studio, said he would donate one day of revenue to the cause.

“I don’t know how anyone can deny hygiene to someone else. We’re in a triage situation,” he said.

Currently, many encampment residents use the bathroom at Sweet Adeline Bakeshop. Representatives from the Lorin Business Association said they had voted to support a portable bathroom at the encampment, but under a permit specifying that the situation was temporary to quell concerns about it setting a precedent.

Bartlett, however, said his concern is not about the bathroom creating a slippery slope, whereby other encampments might be prompted to demand the same treatment — but rather that he thinks all encampments deserve a bathroom, and it would be unfair for the city to only provide one to the most vocal camp.

The councilman told town hall attendees he would work to meet their requests, but said they would be more successful putting a portable toilet on private property in the area rather than going through the city bureaucracy.

“It’s a planning mechanism that takes time. The bathroom is going to happen, but it’s not going to happen quickly,” said Bartlett, who told the group he is empathetic to their plight in part because his family lived in a homeless shelter for a few months when he was a teenager.

Bartlett’s aide, Talia Stender, told Berkeleyside that the councilman has identified Vault Café (at 3250 Adeline St.) and Phillips Temple CME Church (3332 Adeline) as private lots where a portable bathroom could be placed.

At the meeting, homeless advocate JP Massar told Berkeleyside he considers it “complete ridiculousness…that the city can’t do anything even though everyone in this room is in complete agreement.”

Some neighbors did raise concerns about the encampment, saying they worry it could grow and attract people who are unstable or dangerous, and that they fear the city will not be accountable if any problems do arise. In January, a convicted sex offender who had escaped from custody in Washington state and made his way to Berkeley was arrested at the camp, a neighbor noted.

“There’s been a big problem with garbage being dumped on the other side,” said a woman who lives near the camp. “I’m sort of the neighbor that goes on the city website and reports illegal dumping.” She said she supports a bathroom at the site as long as the city oversees it: “It can’t just be a freeform thing.”

For most of the meeting, attendees engaged in a cordial discussion and brainstorming session, but tensions rose a little towards the end, as those who stuck around challenged Bartlett’s insistence that the city could not act quickly to provide a bathroom, and the councilman grew frustrated with the demands.

“Why does the white camp deserve a bathroom first?”

Leah Simon-Weisberg, a South Berkeley resident and member of the Rent Board, asked Bartlett to bring to the City Council a proposal to allow bathrooms at homeless camps if enough signatures are gathered, an idea that previously failed to get sufficient support from the council. (Simon-Weisberg rented portable bathrooms for First They Came for the Homeless in late 2016 when the group was located on the Adeline median near Berkeley Bowl, but they were removed by the city.)

Bartlett agreed to bring the idea back the the council, but said he is frustrated that his district is the one that has to deal with these concerns.

“It’s racism,” he said. “South Berkeley is always expected to bear the burden of poverty.” He also questioned why First They Came for the Homeless should get support while other encampments are ignored.

“Why does the white camp deserve a bathroom first?” he asked. (The majority, but not all, of the group’s members are white.)

A handful of the homeless campers came to the meeting and expressed pleasure with the outcome.

“My concern was we’d come here and occupants of First They Came for the Homeless would be bashed,” said Mike Zint, one of the group’s founders, after the meeting. “That’s not what happened. The community overwhelmingly supports us.”

Zint and others helped launch the “protest camp” in 2014 to call attention to the growing homeless population and to criticize the city’s treatment of homeless residents. They say they run a tight ship, outlawing “tweakers” (drug users), theft and un-neighborly behavior. Many former residents, including Zint himself, have gotten permanent housing or jobs, according to the group.

First They Came for the Homeless has asked the city to sanction an encampment on a site away from residential neighborhoods. The city initially considered the idea but is no longer pursuing it.

Before the camp settled into current site in early 2017, the group was kicked out of more than a dozen other public places. In each case, the city ordered the group to leave due to health and safety concerns, and rousted the campers after they declined to comply. In December, the city cleared out the camp after finding feces spread around its post north of City Hall.

In June, a Berkeley spokesman said the city had left the group alone this time because there had not been any safety complaints about the current set-up. Publicly available data from Berkeley’s 311 line shows some complaints of “homeless activity” and “illegal dumping” in the immediate area, but it is not clear whether they pertain to the encampment specifically.

At the town hall, members of the neighborhood advocacy group Friends of Adeline said they have been providing the group with access to bathrooms and showers, and otherwise monitoring safety and cleanliness at the site.

Make a splash with a new bathroom

Read article : Make a splash with a new bathroom

Things are getting personal in the bathroom... Gabrielle Fagan reveals three key looks to make a style splash

THERE'S a new wave of styles washing over bathrooms. The tide's turning against the predictable, and embracing a more go-with-the-flow approach means you can mix-and-match furniture and fittings to conjure a space that perfectly suits your taste, as well as your practical needs, whether it's a spa-like haven, a functional family room, or a contemporary wet room.

As designers become more adventurous, sophistication, glamour and individuality rule. And it's easy to achieve a 'wow' factor, thanks to state-of-the-art technology - think TVs, sound systems and light and water shows in the shower - sculptural sanitary ware, and even stunning waterproof wallpaper now vying with tiles for attention.

"The traditional bathroom suite has become outdated and there's a desire for the space to become customised, with people seeing it as a room where they can display individual pieces, as they would art," says Leanne Martin, head of product at Sottini.

"A strong industrial trend is coming through, with steel-effect wall-hung cabinets complemented by sleek brassware and fresh white walls for an efficient, sleek look. Bathroom units raised off the floor, increasing visible floor space, to create an illusion of a larger room, are starring, and a particularly striking 'floating' effect can be achieved, with wall-hung, chunky, unsupported slabs in gloss or wood grain, and slim, curved vessel basins on top."

Soak up inspiration from these latest bathroom looks...

DRAMA ZONE

"If you don't want to reach out and touch the walls, you're not doing it right for 2017. Bathrooms no longer mean matching tiles as far as the eye can see - as a nation, we've become experimental with wall finishes and shrugged off the constraints of the white bathroom tile," says Martin.

"Industrial concrete walls are being paired with textured wallpapers, while tile effects are being created using countless different sizes, shapes, prints and texture options. Even a retro wood finish has made a comeback for a Scandi-chic style statement, and for the really bold, vertical green, living walls, to give a lush 3D impact you can't beat!"

Water, she points out, is a feature in itself. "It's not enough that it drains down a plughole any more. It's all about the spectacle of how it falls in a waterfall-like sheet from a height and disappears out of sight into concealed drainage."

LOOK OUT FOR: Mirrors with sensor controlled lighting and de-misting, as well as inbuilt functions linked to music systems, TVs and phones.

TAP INTO STYLE: Wall&Deco's waterproof 'wall papers' include a gorgeous 'Inner Forest' and 'Converatory' (Pictured above) - which looks like a lush tropical landscape - design, from £156 per square metre, West One Bathrooms (www.westonebathrooms.com). Alternatively, make an impact with a monochrome Diver Wall Mural, from £10.63, Purlfrost (www.purlfrost.com).

Sottini's range has bang-on-trend pieces, including a free-standing Ombrone Totem Washbasin, £1,190.25 (pictured below); a Bonamico 70cm Square Vessel Washbasin, £341.55, or a bowl-shape Pioto Vessel Washbasin, £160.43. Achieve that 'floating' effect with a sleek Ippari Console, £546.48. (www.sottini.co.uk).

If you really want to splash the cash for celebrity style, Touched Interiors is the destination to visit: Brass And Gold Plated Black High Gloss Bubbles Bathtub, £29,310, and a Polished Brass And Mirrored Free-standing Washbasin, £14,770 (www.touchedinteriors.co.uk).

For period style, look no further than Heritage Bathrooms, which has a Madeira Cast Iron Double Ended Bath, from £3,750, and an Abingdon Basin & Washstand in Rose Gold, from £495 (www.heritagebathrooms.com).

SERENE SANCTUARY

"The bathroom isn't purely about functionality, or a clinical environment any more. It's a sanctuary that needs as much design consideration as a living room," says Daniel Cook, principal development designer at C.P. Hart.

"It's all about subtle elegance and a beautiful harmony of shades with less 'pops' of colour. Muted consistent tones, such as taupes and greys for furniture and sanitary ware, are increasingly popular colour choices. There's a move beyond white and glazed surfaces and a significant increase in pastel shades of pinks and blues."

LOOK OUT FOR: A refined industrial trend with brushed finish brassware, matt finishes for ceramics, as well as silk/satin glass finishes.

TAP INTO STYLE: Key into colour with Italian-designed items from the Cielo Ceramica I Catini range: Blue Washbasin (pictured below), from £1,580, C.P.Hart (www.cphart.co.uk).

Laufen's slim units in gold would impress: Gold Kartell All Saints Mirror, £504.62 and Rifly Pendant Lamp, £335.27; Boutique Dark Oak Vanity Unit, £1,522.50.

MAKE A SPLASH

"From cars to holidays, and clothing to furniture, customisation is one of the fastest growing consumer trends," says Jayne Barnes, managing director, AQATA.

"The discerning bathroom buyer now wants not only a highly engineered luxury shower enclosure or screen, handmade to fit their space, but also a completely individual customised design to bring their own character and personality into the bathroom. Home trends are being reflected in bathrooms with diverse colours, patterns and textures making their mark.

"Today's shower should incorporate these essential features: easy access (walk-in wet rooms are perfect for this), spacious enclosures and a steam function, as well as power showers and body jets to cater for comfort and wellbeing, and distinctive personal touches."

LOOK OUT FOR: Larger showers as they're being given more space in either a bathroom or bedroom, plus frameless enclosures featuring coloured or tinted glass.

TAP INTO STYLE: AQATA's frameless Spectra Enclosure SP448, from £1,561 (pictured below), and Linneal Shower LNP241, £1,300 (for stockists, visit www.aqata.co.uk). Alternatively, Merlyn Showering has a Twin Panelled Double Shower Enclosure, from £345 per panel (www.merlynshowering.com).

Is this combined kitchen-bathroom in San Francisco for real?

Read article : Is this combined kitchen-bathroom in San Francisco for real?

While San Francisco properties are getting smaller and denser, one must stand in awe of the audacity of one property owner’s decision to meld the kitchen and bathroom into one space.

A microwave and kitchen sink literally sit next to an enclosed shower and toilet. This raises many, many questions. First, the validity of the photos. The image was sent in by a tipster—and since NextDoor limits to posts by neighborhood, Curbed SF has been unable to verify if they appeared on the website, or if they have been altered in any way. Curbed SF has contacted the owner of the property for comment. We will update as soon as we hear back from them

But supposing this mind-boggling room is real, here are a few other questions:

  • Is this legal? Answer: No, it is not.
  • Is it safe? Possibly not.
  • Is it healthy? Microscopic waste particles do launch into the air post-flush, so that is one concern. “Fecal plumes could pose a problem, especially if you’re prone to flushing with the toilet seat up,” says Elizabeth Lopatto, science editor at The Verge. (Here’s more on that dirty subject.)
  • Where is this located? According to the ad, which was posted on NextDoor, this newly renovated studio apartment is near the Presidio Wall between Presidio Heights and Cow Hollow.
  • How much?According to the ad, $2,000/month or best offer.

Here are some additional images of the tiny home. Enjoy.
