In a Market Dominated by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Chassis, Several New Players Emerge for 2014

Change is coming to the Class B motorhome market in 2014 with two new European-based platforms on which RV manufacturers are
expected to build: The new ProMaster van, already available from Chrysler’s Ram truck division, and the 2015 Ford Transit van that is expected to debut early next year.
Both will challenge the decade-long market supremacy of the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, which, as an RV platform, outsold the domestic Chevy Express van by more than two-to-one in 2012. The Chevy Express has been the Sprinter’s primary competitor in the RV market since Ford mothballed the popular Ford E-series van last year.

Ford Transit

And camper van builders are quickly adapting. Winnebago Industries Inc. got a jump on the market this summer with the introduction of the long-anticipated Travato van camper on the Ram ProMaster chassis, while others already have plans to add the Ford Transit to their stable when it becomes available.
‘’There is additional competition coming,’’ noted Jim Brieske, specialty vehicle manager for General Motors Fleet and Commercial Operations.
The suddenly increased competition in the Class B market portends well for consumers. More chassis mean more choices with regard to price, floorplans and powerplants.
Horsepower and gross vehicle weight rating (gvwr) for Ford’s unibody Transit haven’t been established yet, but it will be equipped with a V-6 gas or 3.2-liter diesel

Ram ProMaster

engine with wheelbases from 130 to 147 inches.
The Ram ProMaster, powered by a 280-hp 3.6-liter gasoline engine, features high- and low-roof models with a gvwr of 9,350 pounds and wheelbases up to 159 inches, while the Chevy Express provides a gvwr up to 9,600 pounds with a 324-hp 6.2-liter powerplant.
Although new to North America, both the ProMaster, based on the European Fiat Ducato, and the Ford Transit, upfitted for the U.S. market, have long been used in Europe as motorhome and commercial van platforms.
‘’Transit has been available in Europe for more than 40 years,’’ said Craig Hall, Ford Motor Company’s specialty vehicle marketing manager. ‘’It’s not a new vehicle, per se.’’
Hall says the Transit — not to be confused with the smaller Transit Connect — will be available in several lengths, roof heights and gvwrs. ‘’Fuel prices are going up, and the consumer wants better fuel mileage, which the Transit will provide,’’ he said.
The Ram ProMaster also has a long history. ‘’The ProMaster is a proven platform,’’ said Joe Benson, head of Ram commercial trucks. ‘’It’s been on the
European market for over 30 years and 4.5 million have been sold worldwide.
Two out of every three RV owners (in Europe) have chosen the Ducato on the Fiat platform.’’
Meanwhile, the Class B king, Mercedes-Benz, isn’t sitting still. The luxury European manufacturer is modifying the 2014 Sprinter chassis — released in September — with a redesigned front end and new 4-cylinder diesel engine that is expected to get 15 to 18 percent better fuel economy. Most van camper manufacturers that build on the Sprinter chassis will make the change to the new chassis in the middle of their 2014 model year.
Here’s a look at what some prominent B-van manufacturers are offering for 2014 (note: Sprinter-based photos are on the 2013 chassis).

Advanced RV

Factory-direct Advanced RV LLC of Willoughby, Ohio, offers an optional ‘’Independence Package’’ in the all-diesel Gulf Coast and Ocean One Class B motorhomes that include two solar panels to charge a set of lithium-iron batteries that also can be charged by a shore connection or through an optional generator attached to the engine. Standard with diesel appliances — including a hydronic heating system and on-demand hot water — the Gulf Coast is built on the standard 22-foot Sprinter chassis while Ocean One 24-footer is assembled on the Sprinter’s dual-wheel extended platform. Both include a touch-screen Silverleaf multiplex system to monitor tank levels and batteries; it also acts as a thermostat and starts the generator. Although highly customizable, Gulf Coast and Ocean One are equipped with convertible electric sofas — fixed double or twin beds are optional — LED lighting, heated floors, custom ground effects with integrated running boards, European-style cabinets, portable single-burner induction cooktop and a Keurig K-Cup coffeemaker.

Airstream

Jackson Center, Ohio-based Airstream Inc.’s Interstate Class B has been the best-selling van camper brand for the last three years and will be mounted on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis with a standard 161-hp 6-cylinder diesel engine by the time you read this. Available in seven 22 and 24-foot floorplans on standard and extended Sprinter chassis, the Interstate has been upgraded for 2014 with a larger TV, Alcoa DuraBright aluminum wheels, an enhanced navigation system and Xenon headlights with automatic rain-sensing washers. Other standards include Corian countertops and pedestal tables, high-gloss laminate cabinets, power rear sofas or twin beds, Ultraleather seating and adjustable LED lighting.

The Legend and upgraded Legend SE are 22 feet, while the Legend XE is 24 feet and offers more living space, a longer bed and four coach batteries. The front-seating and rear-sleeping areas allow two people to get up and go to bed at different times without disturbing each other. Features on the new CS-Adventurous include frameless windows, marine toilets, engineered granite countertops, cherry cabinet doors and heavy-duty vinyl flooring. If you’re keen to save as much money as possible on your bathroom renovation, you may want to consider a DIY project. While this lets you take control of your bathroom renovation, it’s always wise to think about your options before going the DIY route as bathroom renovations can become complicated very quickly.

Some jobs are fairly simple for the DIY renovator, such as stripping out your old bathroom and prepping the space for your new bathroom. Other jobs, for example waterproofing and tiling, you might also be able to do yourself if you have the right experience under your belt.

From tiles to toilets, there are several options when you need to stock up on the right supplies for your bathroom renovation. A good place to start your search is a large hardware store like Bunnings, Masters Home Improvement or Home Timber and Hardware. This will give you a good idea of some of the fixtures and fittings available to include in your bathroom.

It’s also a good idea to browse specialist renovation and bathroom supply stores — research online to find one near you, and where you find one bathroom store you’ll often find a few more. There’s a huge range of products to choose from for every aspect of your renovation, from the smallest of tiles to the largest of freestanding baths, so take the time to consider all the options available before making your decisions.

Top tips to help you save money on your bathroom renovation

• Do your research. Jump online and visit local bathroom renovation specialists to see what kind of materials and fixtures are on offer. Speak to architects, building experts and bathroom renovation specialists to ensure that your renovation plan and budget is feasible. Source several quotes from different suppliers before deciding which company to go with.
• Plan ahead. Don’t start your renovation unless you know exactly what you want to achieve. Getting halfway through your project and then deciding that you don’t like the layout, you want different tiles or you’d like to make room for a bigger bath can be an expensive and stressful mistake. Work out exactly what you want before you reach for a hammer.
• Make a budget and stick to it. Bathroom renovations have something of a reputation for unforeseen costs and budget blow-outs. Around $15,000 to $20,000 is a realistic estimate for many bathroom projects, see our guide on the costs of bathroom renovations, but sit down and work out the material and labour costs for your project. Once you’re fully aware of how much your project should cost and how much you can afford, it’s time to start work.
• Know what you can do — and what you can’t. While DIY renovations are great for saving money, it’s important that you don’t get ahead of yourself when choosing what jobs to take on and what to leave to the professionals. If you’re at all unsure about your ability to complete a particular task, you’re much better off getting the experts in to avoid problems occurring later down the track.
• Take your time. While it can be frustrating having your bathroom out of action for a couple of weeks or more, when you’re doing it yourself it’s important not to rush things. Measure everything twice and be certain you’re doing the right thing before you cut, lay or install anything.
• Plumbing costs. You might want to completely rearrange the features and layout of your bathroom, but take note that plumbing costs can sometimes make this prohibitively expensive. Moving plumbing pipes and outlets for sinks, toilets, showers and baths can cost thousands of dollars, so you may be better off leaving some fixtures where they are to lower your costs.

A tired ensuite with a space-hogging spa was reinvented as a luxury retreat in this project by designer Owen Barnes of Bubble Bathrooms.

"To make the ensuite feel more spacious, we replaced the spa with a wet area combining the shower and new semi-freestanding bath," Barnes says. "A sloping floor and strip drain serve shower and bath, while a raked blade wall keeps the dry area dry."

To achieve the look of a freestanding bath without losing floor space or inadvertently creating hard to reach places to clean, a supporting ledge and pedestal were built out from the wall. The ledge also provides a landing space for soap and shampoo. The niche was built directly into the wall cavity which had to be reinforced with a support beam as this was a structural wall.

Patterned tiles behind the tub are a feature of the ensuite, as are the recycled oak vanity drawers together with the verdigrised bronze table-top sink. The wooden door and mirror surrounds are stained to match the drawers. The mirror has one central static panel while its outer panels open to recessed cabinetry space.

Low energy, low glow LED lighting under the vanity provides a discreet night light.

Along with the kitchen, bathrooms and powder rooms are the big ticket items in building or renovating. Chances are if you haven’t a neutral palette to start with you may not find it as easy to add seasonal decor or change simple items such as towels or even the tapware.

But, help is at hand with Bunnings’ national bathroom buyer Adam Cole and Reece Bathroom business manager Daniela Santilli offering some advice on how to make some simple and easy changes to the bathroom or powder room - without breaking the bank!

“A great bathroom can be a luxurious retreat to relax and unwind in after a busy day, or a functional space for the family’s daily rituals. But updating the bathroom doesn’t have to be an expensive or timely exercise,” Adam says. “With the right tips, tools and products, a bathroom makeover can suit any budget, whether it is a complete overhaul or small updates to spruce up the space.”

What are some of the newest trends that are coming through for bathrooms?

Daniela says bathroom trends in Australia are “constantly evolving, taking cues from both international and local design trends in the bathroom and the broader home, changing consumer needs and fostering new innovations”.

“For many, the bathroom is no longer a purely functional space, but a place of rest and relaxation – ‘the living room for one’ and a destination in which to retreat from outside stressors,” she says. “With this focus on the bathroom as a living space has come a new emphasis on bathroom furniture. We are also seeing growing demand for personalisation in the bathroom, as consumers seek solutions that perfectly suit the size and style of their bathroom space.”

Some of the top trends she has noted, include new shapes and silhouettes, using natural timbers for vanities and mirrors.

“When it comes to tapware, we’re seeing a rise in popularity for wall-mounted basin mixer sets, rather than vanity mounted options,” she says. “ Products are incorporating a modern aesthetic using contemporary shapes and lines, as seen in the seamlessly simple yet refined appearance of Laufen’s living square collection of basins, made using Saphirkeramik technology. This innovative technology showcases the use of impossibly thin, yet exceptionally strong fine lines. We’re also seeing growth in products using organic shapes with soft, gentle curves inspired by nature. Sweeping contours flow effortlessly to create a soothing and relaxing space.”

As for inspiration, Adam says look for images to help determine the desired look and feel of the new bathroom. “The Bunnings website has an interactive brochure available to provide inspiration and product suggestion.”

What are some easy updates I can make to my bathroom without having to renovate?

Adam says replacing a vanity is an ideal way to spruce up the wet room. “Replacing a tired old vanity is a great way to give the bathroom a quick makeover. Choose a vanity that will reflect the style of your bathroom and maximise storage options,” he says.

Adds Daniela: “There are lots of easy ways to get a new bathroom look without a complete overhaul. One of the easiest and most effective changes you can make to refresh your bathroom is to update existing fittings like taps and showerheads. Using existing plumbing points keeps the process relatively simple while delivering a big impact. Inject new life into your bathroom by switching to a contemporary-look basin mixer.”

She says a wall-mounted vanity creates the illusion of space, clears clutter and adds style. “​A modern shower head can (also) create a whole new experience, and the invigorating drench of an overhead shower head can make all the difference to your daily bathing ritual. Waterrail showers are another great retrofit option - they are like standard rail showers and have the flexibility of adjustable height and the ability to take the shower head off-hook, with the bonus of a cleaner aesthetic.”

Adam says if your budget cannot extend to a new toilet, simply replacing the lid and seat of the toilet is an easy revamp to change a look, as is changing cupboard handles. “This is an affordable and easy way to update the bathroom on a budget,” he says. “Change the smaller details, such as the tap ware and light fittings, to give the bathroom a fresh new look without breaking the bank.

“A great bath can also transform the look of the entire bathroom. A freestanding bath is easy to install and will make a strong design statement, particularly if used as a centrepiece for the room.”

Always consider WELS ratings if you do replace the toilet, he says, to ensure ongoing cost savings.

What is the first step in a bathroom renovation?

For Adam, creating a budget - and sticking to it - should be the first step in any renovation project; then consider the space you have to work with before purchasing any items that create your desired look and feel in the new or revamped bathroom.

“This will affect the products chosen and the updates made. Prioritise the changes that are most important to freshen the look of the bathroom and then choose products that reflect your chosen budget,” he says. “It is (also) crucial to take measurements of the room and outline space requirements before purchasing and installing any new bathroom products. Be aware of existing fixtures that aren’t easily moved, such as the plumbing, and take current decor into consideration.”

Knowing where to start and what you want is the key for Daniela: “A little inspiration can go a long way when it comes to bathroom design. Magazines, design blogs and the Inspiration section of the Reece Bathrooms website are great places to start gathering ideas for the looks, products and layouts you’d like to incorporate in your new bathroom.”

She agrees that understanding the space you’ve got to work with will make for a successful renovation.

“Measure the bathroom and start mapping out layout, thinking about where key items like the shower, bath and toilet can be positioned.  Also consider whether you’ll be retrofitting the bathroom using existing plumbing points or renovating completely. This can influence both budget and product positioning so it’s best to determine your approach early in the planning process. How can I make my powder room feel bigger?

Says Daniela: “A smaller bathroom space doesn’t mean compromising on style. Mirrors create the illusion of space, but avoid those with fancy or ornate borders as these will easily clutter the room. Stick to clean and simple lines. (And) use the same tile on both the floor and walls to significantly make the area look and feel more spacious. Light colours also create the illusion of space, and larger tiles will make your floor look bigger as they have less grout.”

Both Adam and Daniela agree you should always consider making making use of extra wall space by mounting shelves to store essential bathroom items and decorative pieces.

“Try an under-counter basin for your unit as it will make your space feel larger because of its uncluttered bench space. There are also a wide range of petite basins designed specifically for smaller bathroom spaces,” Daniela says. “Float the vanity. Besides just visually helping the bathroom appear bigger, mounting a vanity above the floor frees up a little space for small items and is easier to clean too.

“Slimline products such as wall hung toilets and in-wall cisterns are perfect for enhancing space.They are one of the biggest growth areas in the bathroom. Mixing and matching flush buttons and your ideal toilet pans will create a seamless and modern finish, as well as saving valuable inches and freeing up floor space.”

How can we incorporate stylish storage into a bathroom?

A bathroom filled with clutter is not the relaxing sanctuary of calm that you had in mind. Savvy and multi-functional storage solutions are key for any modern bathroom, particularly in smaller spaces. Daniela says clever storage options include wall hung units and products with side shelves or compartments within drawers,which are a great way to create storage space and reduce clutter. “Linen cabinets and tallboys are also ideal for conserving space,” she says. Daniela’s other tips include:

• Use recessed shelves or niches add extra storage space while giving bathrooms a sleek look. Architectural Designer Products offers vanity ranges that include handy hidden auto bins, internal cosmetic drawers and even LED lighting.

At what point in the renovation process should I start talking to a plumber or builder?

Daniela says that for any renovation, it is best to work closely with qualified tradespeople such as plumbers, builders and electricians to avoid costly mistakes.

“Our research shows that many Australians prefer a ‘Do It Together’ approach to creating their dream bathroom, but while you may think you can tackle some of the plumbing jobs yourself to save money, it can end up costing a lot more to rectify a DIY job gone wrong.

“It’s important to engage tradespeople early in the planning and design process, as they will be able to advise you on the realms of possibility when it comes to creating your desired look, as well as advising you on costing and time frames.”

As for the finishing touches once you and/or the tradespeople have finished, Daniela says it’s the little things that make a difference for any room of the house.

“So for an even simpler update, small touches such as buying good quality towels, scented candles or flowers will make a space feel inviting and reinvigorated,” she says.
