In 2006, I decided I was ready to move out to the country, get some chickens, grow a garden and trade in my city garb for flannel shirts and muck boots. Luckily for me, out of nowhere came the man who would be my husband and along with him an 11-acre homestead in a forested cove. While I was sold on my man straight away, the added perk of marrying into a country home certainly sweetened the deal. And when I later learned that our neighbor, one of two living down our 1-mile dirt road, was a licensed massage therapist who practiced out of her home, I was so glad I’d had the good sense to say “I do.”

My neighbor, Lynn Bernatsky, was a modern dancer before becoming a massage therapist 24 years ago. Accordingly, her knowledge of how the body functions, and how to best care for it, is vast. A few weeks ago, in exchange for cat-sitting while she and her husband were out of town, Lynn gave me what I can honestly say was the best massage I’ve ever received. While the physical manipulation was exquisite (she’s a tiny thing but can work her hands like a giant!), a huge component of what made the experience so pleasurable was the custom massage oil blend she made.

For today’s Small Measures, I’m sharing Lynn’s tips for crafting all-natural custom bath and massage oil blends at home. I’ve also got her wonderful recipe for a winter blues-banishing blend. We’re two-thirds of the way through the driest season here in the northern hemisphere, so any added moisture right now absolutely helps. Lynn’s tips and blend should go far toward keeping you, your skin and your attitude happy and healthy! — Ashley English

I was so intrigued after my massage with Lynn that I stopped over the following week to ask her about crafting bath and massage oil blends. I’m so glad I did, as she was full of beneficial information about selecting essential oils and base oils, as well as recommendations for reputable companies supplying both. Here are her tips for selection, safety, mixing and storing:

Selection

– A combination of almond and jojoba oils is beneficial when crafting a massage oil blend. The jojoba extends the shelf life of the almond oil, as it is quite stable. Also, almond oil tends to stay on the surface of the skin, and jojoba’s greater absorbency pulls the oil down into the skin, helping it to be less greasy on the surface.

– Lynn has found that smaller essential oil companies tend to have more stringent quality control standards. In her years of work as a massage therapist and an aromatherapist, she has repeatedly turned to the following companies for the highest quality products to be placed directly on the skin:

Safety

– According to Lynn, citrus essential oils intended for use on the skin should always be organic, as such crops are often heavily sprayed with herbicides and fungicides.

– Furthermore, citrus oils are photo-toxic, meaning you can be burned when wearing them if exposed to direct sunlight. As such, it’s recommended that citrus oils not be used if you intend to visit a tanning bed the same day or plan to be outdoors exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time. Bergamot is a type of citrus, so look for a bergapten-free oil when ordering this essential oil for skin use; such oils have been processed to remove the photo-toxic constituent.

– Research essential oils you’re interested in using on your skin to see if they’re considered “skin friendly” first.

– Always use a carrier oil (or milk, for a milk bath) when using essential oils. Several of them will burn your skin severely if applied directly. I speak from personal experience on this particular safety issue, after an unfortunate bath several years ago where I dropped grapefruit essential oil into the bathwater, stepped in and immediately felt a horrid burning sensation. Use a carrier oil and save yourself from a similar woe!

– Cinnamon leaf is safe to use in skin applications but not cinnamon bark. The bark should only be used as an essential oil in aromatherapy or in medicinal aromatherapy.

Mixing & Storing

– As you are developing a blend, consider the scents that you are most drawn to. Florals? Citrus? Resins? Let those scents guide you as you craft your blends. If you’re making a blend for someone else, pose this question to them in advance (or be sneaky, if you want to surprise them, and ask someone who lives with them or knows them quite well what perfume or cologne they typically wear).

– When mixing a blend, place the essential oils in your mixing bottle first and then top it off with the carrier oils.

– A pourable measuring cup or a beaker can also be used to first combine the oils and then transfer them to their storage vessel.

– Store custom oil blends in a dark glass bottle. Plastic isn’t recommended, as the volatile oils present in the essential oils can break down the plastic over time.

– Use oil blends within six months, and keep them out of direct sunlight, stored in a cabinet or pantry.

And now, Lynn’s glorious blend, perfect for sending winter blues on their dreary way! Lavender and geranium are considered a balancing combination, bergamot helps in alleviating depression, lime is considered invigorating and cleansing and ylang ylang helps to balance hormones and aid in muscle tension.

Banish the Blues Blend

The Goods

• 1 ounce jojoba oil (preferably organic)
• 3 ounces sweet almond oil (preferably organic)
• lavender essential oil: 26 drops
• rose geranium essential oil: 12 drops
• ylang ylang essential oil: 12 drops
• lime essential oil (look for “distilled” lime): 8 drops
• bergamot essential oil (bergapten-free): 6 drops

The Deal

1. Place the essential oil drops either directly into a storage vessel or first into a pourable measuring cup or beaker.

2. Add the jojoba and almond oils. Using a funnel, transfer the blend to a dark-colored 4-ounce glass bottle.

3. If using in the bath, run the bath first. Add a bit of the blend and soak for as long as you’re comfortable. Take great caution when stepping out of the bath, and scrub it down afterward to remove all oil residue.

4. If using as a massage oil, take a bath or shower first. Towel off gently, leaving the skin damp. Apply the oil blend directly to the skin.

One evening as I was preparing my cologne bath after a long day I accidentally poured a decant of The Different Company Sel de Vétiver instead of 4711 into the water. The explosion of scent–green woods, licorice and grapefruit–was so exhilarating and relaxing that I immediately felt refreshed. Since then, vetiver scented baths have become my favorite way to wind down.

Vetiver is a tropical grass that has intensely aromatic roots. In India, where vetiver roots are woven into screens, it is known as “oil of tranquillity” for its relaxing, calming properties. A bath is one of the best anti-stress rituals, but when it’s accompanied by a  scent, the effect is even stronger. Using Sel de Vétiver for a bath is not cost efficient, so I’ve experimented with vetiver essential oil and discovered that it produces a much more potent result. Vetiver has such incredible complexity that it can be diluted in an unscented carrier oil or alcohol and used as perfume. It’s the smell of a late fall garden and a winter beach rolled into one–driftwood, crushed hazelnut shells and damp leaves.

Every year as I prepare my holiday presents, I try to include some handmade gifts for close friends and family. The holiday season is thoroughly commercialized, and I find that people appreciate the thought that goes into a handmade present. Bath salts are easy to prepare, and you can vary the presentation and scents to your liking. Even plain sea salt mixed with lavender blossoms or rose petals makes for a beautiful gift and a great bath experience.

Essential oils are derived from plants by steam distillation, or in the case of citrus, expression. Essences called absolutes are produced by solvent extraction, and this method is frequently used on delicate flowers like jasmine and tuberose that can’t withstand the heat of steam. Vetiver can be treated in various ways, but in all cases, the perfume of vetiver essence is concentrated and rich, which is why you should exercise caution when dosing it. “Less is more” is a motto to follow.

I predict that if you make these bath salts for a gift, you will be tempted to make a batch for yourself. So feel free to double or triple my suggested quantities.

Sel de Vétiver Bath Salts

The amount of vetiver oil you add depends on the quality of oil you have. Some varieties are milder than others. Add oil drop by drop and stop when the mixture has a rich scent. Lavender flowers are optional; they added an aromatic top note to vetiver and look beautiful in the blend.

You can experiment with other essential oils. My favorites are lavender, rosemary, sage and–the most luxurious of oils, rose.  Whenever you use essential oils in a beauty preparation, remember that they should never be applied on skin undiluted. Store them away from light and sources of heat.

Alternatively, add 1/2 cup of almond oil to the salt mixture and turn it into a luxurious scrub.

1 cup coarse sea salt
4-10 drops vetiver essential oil
1 Tablespoon dried lavender flowers (optional)

Wash the jar with baking soda, rinse well and bake for 20 minutes at 250F/120C.

Place salt in a large bowl, add vetiver essential oil one drop at a time and mix well with a wooden spoon before each addition. Add lavender flowers, if using, mix again and pack into clean lidded jar. The salts can be used right away, but the perfume will be more rounded and richer if the mixture is left to macerate for 3 days to a week.

Store in cool, dark place. Use 2-3 Tablespoons in your bath.

Beautiful Oils for Supple Skin and Help with Stretch Marks…

I mentioned this on the “affordable” stretch marks roundup, but I’ll repeat: I know that beauty people are divided in their opinion of stretch mark oils. Or just the use of body oils in general to prevent stretch marks. From my own personal viewpoint, I have no scientific evidence that they work but I kind of think, why would I risk NOT using one? It’s such an enjoyable thing to do anyway, a bit of massage and oiling, and you don’t have to spend the earth to get a suitable oil. (See previous oils post!) I moisturise my skin after a bath or shower anyway, so it’s not like it’s a total mission to add in a bit of a bump-boobs-bum massage to keep skin supple and hopefully reduce the chances of marking.

Anyway, here are some of the more expensive oils that I’ve been testing – not hideously dear, by any means, but a bit more spendy than your typical pharmacy or supermarket buy. Two of them are dedicated “stretch mark” oils, the rest are just perfect for keeping skin supple and soft. The main difference seems to be in ingredients (such as rosehip) that target regeneration and repair, but let’s take a closer look…

Balance Me Super Moisturising Body Oil: £24.50 online here. This doesn’t shout from the rooftops about being a stretch mark prevention oil, but it certainly says all of the right things when you do a bit of research. High in fatty acids to restore elasticity, rosehip to help repair and rejuvenate, and a high percentage of coconut oil which the brand claims “allows this body oil to naturally tackle, prevent and reduce stretch marks.” Bravo. It also feels great to massage in and it smells nice. Win-win.

Clarins Huile Tonic Body Treatment Oil: £35.20 here. Clarins’ best-selling body oil and the product name that popped up the most whenever I mentioned pregnancy oils in tweets or posts. This seems to be a firm favourite! Clarins claim on their website that this is “effective at removing stretch marks” which is a whopper of a claim, so I’d be interested to know how other people with existing marks have fared. My own thoughts are that it must be a million times easier to try and prevent them than remove them, which is why I have been so totally obsessed with my daily (and twice-daily!) oiling but yes. Let me know your success stories. This oil smells good – very herby – and has a great massage-able texture.

Mama Mio Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil: £27 here. Excellent, this one, with the lovely signature Mama Mio scent (I think they must have a certain blend of oils and ingredients common to many of their body products because they all smell so invigorating and zesty!) and a good, firm texture for proper massaging-in ability. I went through this bottle like the clappers – I think it has new packaging, now, which might make it a bit easier to do restrained pouring!

Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Argan Dry Oil: £37.50 here. Wah! Seems pricy, this one, but you get 200ml in comparison to the 100-ish from Mama Mio and Clarins. In fact Clarins is fully twice as expensive, so you have to keep things in perspective! I love a bit of Argan (see post on Simple Oils) and this one is a kind of “Argan Lite” dry-oil version that’s quick to apply and rub in. Good for a morning post-shower treatment, rather than a heavier oil that might feel claggy once you get dressed. Downside: loads of ingredients to make it light and dry. If you just want pure Argan, check this out.

Pai’s Pomegranate & Pumpkin Stretch Mark Cream and Stretch Mark Oil: £45 online here. Again, looks expensive, but this is actually the best value stretch mark treatment of the lot. You get 200ml of cream and 100ml of oil, both used the most impeccably sourced and chosen ingredients and are suitable for sensitive, allergy-prone skin. (Full ingredients list here.) A hydrating cream and a replenishing oil, the stretch mark system is essential oil free, so great for those who can’t handle them or who would prefer to avoid during pregnancy. Packed full of essential fatty acids to nourish the skin and formulated to help increase elasticity, this is one of my absolute must-buys. The oil drizzles out at an annoyingly slow rate and the cream dispenser needs some looking at (I have literally never had such bad hand and wrist fatigue trying to extract a body cream from the bottle!) but all is forgiven for the beautiful formulas and soft, supple skin they reveal.

Today’s review is about Yves Rocher Olive Petitgrain Bath and Shower Gel. The shower gel has a majority of components from plant extracts, making it a botanical product. Please note that this is not an organic product.

My Experience with Yves Rocher Olive Petitgrain Bath and Shower Gel:

The shower gel comes in a small round plastic container with a flap lid. The packaging is very sturdy. The flap lid sometimes gets a little difficult to open as it’s a little tight. It also gets a little tricky to open with wet hands as it can easily damage the nails. So, I make sure not to use the nails to open it. I mostly use my teeth. But it’s travel safe since there is no chance that the flap would open up automatically. The bottle is transparent, making it easy to know the amount of the product left or being used. The packaging is sturdy and stands to look pretty on the bathroom counter.

The consistency of the product is viscous but not water-like; a little thicker, though. It is green in colour but looks almost transparent when swatched. The color is hardly noticeable. I use twice the walnut size for my entire body. The shower gel spreads very easily on the skin and also creates a good amount of lather. The skin feels smooth and clean after the shower. The product does not leave the skin dry. As a matter of fact, my skin feels nourished after using this wash. The product contains organic aloe vera and olive extracts and we all know how good olive oil is to the skin and the goodness aloe vera is packed with. Aloe vera is extremely good for sunburned skin. The product does not dry out the skin. So I would definitely recommend it to people suffering from dry skin.

The fragrance is the worst part. I got this product thinking of olives and its goodness. But the fragrance is so awful, I don’t want to use it. It might just be me, though. The fragrance is not floral or fresh or herbal. It’s petitgrain oil smell. Petitgrain is the fragrance of leaves and twigs of citrus. It’s supposed to be a mix of bitter, floral, spicy, sweet, and citrus. Woody and warm, in short. I just don’t like the smell of it. The fragrance is hard to describe. Make sure you smell it before buying. If you are ordering it online then I suggest you stay away from this product. The fragrance lasts for a few hours after wash. So it’s not like once it’s washed you get rid of the fragrance. It will linger around and follow you. The shower gel does not cause any kind of irritation to the skin. It was very mild to my dry, sensitive skin.

Overall, it’s a very nice product but comes with an unbearable smell (at least to me). Honestly, I was expecting it to be a great product in every way since I had hand-picked all of these. Probably I was too excited and blindly picked this up.
