This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Sterling for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you heard about the new Sterling Prevailshower door with ComforTrack technology – a flexible bottom track that supports the shower door’s glide and yields an easier, safer day-to-day use for the family. The Sterling Prevailshower door is the perfect addition to your shower!

Sterling shower doors with ComforTrack technology

There is nothing worse than when you are leaning over the tub to give your kids a bath and you are leaning on hard metal. This is extremely uncomfortable. I can not tell you how many times that one of our kids has slipped and hit their shins on the hard metal. What bruises they got!

ComforTrack’scushioned threshold bends to applied pressure, allowing the user to kneel, sit, or lean on the track, making it easier and more comfortable to bathe a child or a pet, access the shower, or clean the bathing/showering space.

Sterling Prevail shower doors with the ComforTrack technology are available for BOTH bath doors and shower doors. This new technology is not only flexible, it is extremely durable – its heavy-duty material withstands rigorous testing, ensuring that it will outlast day-to-day wear and tear. What’s more, the track features a low profile and sleek shape that is easy to keep clean.

This innovation is truly a win-win for today’s homeowner! What are some of your bathroom routines that would be easier with new Sterling Prevail shower doors? Please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear how this ComforTrack technology would improve your life!

Bathroom Paint Colors - It All Started With Paint

Read article : Bathroom Paint Colors - It All Started With Paint

Clark-Kensington-Lucky-Charm-Paint-Color

I’m sitting here shaking my head in disbelief …

sheer, utter, 100% mystified disbelief.

Do you remember my weekend project?  The one where I redid the kids bathroom with a huge helping hand from my neighbors at Ace Hardware?  This one …

bathroom-blue-white-before-and-after

Well, the folks at Ace Hardware shared this with their Facebook fans.  And you know what?  There was more than one person who preferred the “before” over the “after” …

Huh?

Yep.  I’m shaking my head, questioning what exactly they love in the before?  Perhaps the orange oak cabinet?  The stained sheet vinyl floor?  The beige sink?  No, no, it must the plastic white handles on that orange oak cabinet …

And then I chuckled … and admonished myself for my snark.  Bad Linda.

To each his own.  Style and design is subjective.  And yet I can’t help to think that if I had given them a personal and in-person tour of the before they might agree with me that the after is vastly  improved …

vastly so!

When I redid this bathroom – the bathroom shared by my teen son and teen daughter – I consulted closely with said daughter on the design and colors.  She is the one who spends the most time in this room.  Though, in all fairness, the son does take exceptionally long showers but I’m pretty sure his eyes are closed much of that time …

Winking smile

(okay, seriously, as I’m writing this post said son just walked down the stairs after taking a shower and fessed up that he mistakenly washed his hair with soap instead of shampoo and now it feels all weird and hard and stringy.  The sleep showering assumption has been confirmed).

But my daughter?  She is a bath lover.  A daily occurrence for her.  So I wanted the bathroom it to feel soft and soothing and relaxing to compliment her treasured bath time …

The first color we chose together didn’t go over well.  Not because of the color.  It was lovely.  But it was much darker and bolder and, in this small window-less space, overwhelming.  So we went back to the drawing board and selected Clark + Kensington’s Lucky Charm.  It’s a blue-gray color that is much softer.  And it’s a primer and paint in one, so it easily covered that rejected bolder color with two coats …

bathroom-blue-and-white-16

And then I did something crazy.  I took that very same flat paint and painted the beloved-by-some orange oak cabinet …

paint-cabinets-with-latex-paint

I gave it two coats of the flat latex in Lucky Charm.  And then I gave it two coats of clear wax (I used some Annie Sloan wax I had on hand, but any clear wax would work).

And can I tell you something?  I just love, love how it turned out.  No brush strokes and the wax has hardened nicely so this cabinet will stand up to two teens who can’t seem to brush their teeth over the sink …

am I the only one with this problem?

The beadboard wallpaper (I really need to get that ‘how to hang’  post written!), trim, baseboards, and door were all painted with Clark + Kensington’s Designer White.

The medicine cabinet was painted with Ace’s Cabinet, Door & Trim paint …

ace-cabinet-door-trim-paint-review

It’s and Alkyd enamel paint so it’s thick and self leveling and, in the end, the finish looks like it was sprayed on, not brushed on …

And can I just say how great it feels to have a room complete.  Top-to-bottom-cross-it-off-the-to-do-list-finished!  Even it it’s not to everyone’s taste, it makes me smile.  And my kids smile.  And that is the critique I value most …

P.S. Just in time for the New Year, I’m giving away a $100 gift card to Ace Hardware.  You know, to jump start your 2014 home improvement and paint projects …

8 Hidden Hazards Lurking in Your Bathroom

Read article : 8 Hidden Hazards Lurking in Your Bathroom

In 2008, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that 235,000 Americans are admitted to emergency rooms with bathroom related injuries every year. What’s more outstanding is that 14% of people were actually hospitalized.

While some bathroom hazards may be obvious, there are many hidden ones you may not be aware of. I have identified 8 such bathroom hazards, and have provided solutions to ensure you don’t become the next embarrassing statistic.

bathroom hazards

8 Hidden Bathroom Hazards You May Not Be Aware Of

1. Using the Toilet

The CDC found that 14% of all bathroom related injuries were a direct result of using the toilet. In fact, people over 85 actually suffered over half of their injuries near the toilet.

Solution: Make sure you have a grab rail installed near your toilet.

2. Dirty Shower Heads

In 2009, researchers at The University of Colorado found 30% of shower heads contained the mycobacterium avium which has been linked to tuberculosis. Probably the most horrific case linked to shower heads occurred in 1976 with the fatal outbreak of Legionnaires‘ disease in America.

Solution: As the slime that builds-up inside the shower head can protect germs, make sure you clean it regularly.

Interestingly, the Colorado study found metal shower heads had fewer pathogens than plastic ones; so switch to a metal one and look for one with a filter that you can change regularly.

3. Flushing the Toilet

As one might expect, toilet water will contain bacteria from urine and faeces which can carry e-coli; when you flush a toilet, therefore, tiny droplets can disperse onto your bathroom. This is only an issue for items located close to your toilet, but as this will often include toothbrushes and soap it is not a very attractive thought.

Solution: Always flush with the lid down!

4. Mold, Glorious Mold

Mold produces allergens, irritants and has the potential to cause health problems, with the most common mold found in bathrooms being stachybotrys: a black, sticky fungus which can cause asthma-like symptoms.

It relies on moisture and damp to develop, so poorly ventilated bathrooms can easily become breeding grounds. Given the right climate, mold can rapidly grow in 24-48 hours and you often won’t notice it until it becomes a large problem.

Solution: The solution is simple: no moisture = no mold.

If you have an extractor fan use this while you shower, and for up to 20 minutes after, as this will lower humidity. If you don’t have access to a fan, simply shower with the door slightly open and ensure you leave it wide open for 20 minutes after.

5. Damp Floors

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that a wet floor will pose a potential health risk as it will increase the risk of falling. The two biggest causes of rogue wet floors are ill-fitted shower curtains and us, more specifically our wet feet.

Solution: In general, shower curtains are poor for protecting against water splashes; so ditch the curtain and invest in a sturdy bath screen.

6. Self-Inflicted Slippery Surfaces

This hazard is reserved solely for bath users and is a direct result of all the toiletries we use. These can be particularly slippery and can settle at the bottom of your bath, with bath oils being the main culprit.

The problem here is that you often won’t notice how slippery it is until you try to get up. This can prove to be a particularly menacing bathroom hazard for the elderly.

Solution: Install grab rails around your bath to give yourself something to hold onto when getting up.

You should also never step out onto a naked floor: invest in a skid-proof rug and some textured bathroom tiles with an uneven surface. Both of these will work together to provide your feet with something to grip onto.

7. Exiting the Bath

The CDC found that exiting the bath, or shower, causes the most dangers in the bathroom across all age groups. While only 2.2% of injuries involved entering, exiting was the cause 9.8% of injuries.

Solution: As with most tips, all you need to do is install grab rails.

8. Shattering Glass Screens

In 2009 the Consumer Products Safety Commission recorded nearly 2000 complaints made against shower doors which shattered as a result of being incorrectly installed.

Solution: Ensure a professional has fitted your shower door correctly.

Oh, and don’t forget to tell guests not to use the shower door as a leaning post!

Types Of Walk-In Bathtubs - The Senior List

Read article : Types Of Walk-In Bathtubs - The Senior List

Did you know that (more than) one in three seniors over age 65 fall each year?  The National Institute on Aging (NIA) reports that 80% of these falls are in the bathroom.  To prevent such occurrences, many families consider walk-in bathtubs to mitigate the risk of injuries.  Walk-in bathtubs are great considerations for the less mobile among us.  For aging adults, falls can lead to debilitating injuries.  Today’s post focuses on the different types of walk-in bathtubs available.

Walk In Tubs get quotes from the best providers

What are walk-in bathtubs?  Walk-in bathtubs are an alternative to a traditional bathtub.  Walk-in tubs have doors on them.  They open up so the user doesn’t have to step over a leading edge like you might find on a conventional bathtub. Walk-in bathtubs can be safer alternatives for elderly and/or disabled individuals, but there are many different types of walk-in bathtubs.  If you’re considering a new walk-in type tub, you need to know your options.

RELATED: WALK-IN BATHTUB PRICES

Soaker Tub

types of walk-in bathtubsA soaker tub is a basic walk-in bathtub.  It has no hydrotherapy jets, and is generally less expensive than other models with additional features.  This is considered an entry-level walk-in tub.  A soaker tub comes with a leak-proof door, usually includes a grab bar and a hand-held shower accessory.

Hydrotherapy Tub

types of walk-in bathtubs

A hydrotherapy tub includes the leak-proof door, and some additional options that help with circulation in some folks.  These tubs come with water jets (and usually air jets as well) in order to circulate and/or agitate the water.  It feels good, and it  can help loosen up stiff joints and muscles.

A bariatric tub is a walk-in bathtub made for larger individuals.  You can purchase a bariatric tub with minimal features, or all the bells and whistles like water jets, etc.

Wheel-Chair Accessible Tub

Wheelchair Accessible Walk-In Bathtub

The wheelchair accessible walk-in tub usually has an outward opening door frame, and allows for the easy transfer from the chair to the tub.

As you can see, there are many different types of walk-in bathtubs.  Wheelchair accessible showers are another area of interest, and a topic for a later discussion.  Be aware that these walk-in tubs can get expensive.  Another consideration is the installation, which can range from $500 to $5,000 depending on what is necessary for the job.  If you’re worried about the safety of your loved one at home and the bathroom is a concern, see a professional about adding industrial grade grab-bars, and other safety equipment in and around the bathtub or shower.  You’ll be glad you did.

Our bathroom quick fix

Read article : Our bathroom quick fix

While we adore our “new old house,” the bathrooms are small.  Like funny small considering my husband is 6’3″ and is a big guy and I am not tiny. Neither are our offspring. But what do you do when your dream house has tiny baths?  {Master bath is 5′ x 7′ and kids is 4 x 8″, downstairs powder is like 3.5″ x 4.4″ I am not kidding} You just deal with it, after all older homes have quirks and you just say “one day we will remodel” and I think we def will but it wasn’t just the size. Also the color and age and condition of some of the tile. The house was built in the 1940s after all.  Enter Rustoleum.  And this post is NOT sponsored by Rustoleum this is just my PSA.

showerproduct

I googled and looked on pinterest, as you do, and discovered this was hands down the product for the shower tile. I had considered Miracle Method and even called and got an estimate but it was $1500 for our tiny shower.  It’s 32″ x 32″ y’all.  There had been a leak but it was fixed and retiling a space a tiny space we didn’t love seemed silly.Decided this was worth a try as a bandaid until ready to remodel.  I could not find the Rustoleum product at my local Lowes or Home Depot so I ordered it off Amazon.  It took two boxes (even for our small shower) and I bought a mask for the hubs and begged him to wear it!

BEFORE

Screen Shot 2014-08-25 at 10.22.28 AM

This was the before of our master shower.  Y’all this is clean! It was clean when we moved in and my mom went NUTS on it (she is a cleaning ninja) with even more cleaning and it still looked like this. (and because it was clean and very roughed up and porous it holds the product great so you have to clean well first)

Screen Shot 2014-08-25 at 10.22.39 AM

This is a great project to do BEFORE you move into a house or while kids are on a little vacation because it really stinks.  We were able to do it before we moved in while work was going on downstairs with lots of time to cure between coats.

DURING (after one coat)

AFTER

Screen Shot 2014-08-25 at 10.44.23 AM

My husband did this and he did a great job but he said beware the fumes are dangerous so wear a mask, turn on fan and open windows!  There are some great posts out there about using rollers and brushes but it isn’t rocket science.  You can do this..so glad we did and didn’t pay $1500 to have someone else do basically same thing.  And while isn’t perfect it feels clean and the bright white really helps the small space have light and not feel claustrophobic.

photo 5-5

Of course my other quick fixes include: vintage nude sketch matted in white, monogram towels, schoolhouse electric lights, my fave bamboo shade, oversized glass knobs from Home Depot, and a little marble tray for Waterworks (Joss & Main score). I am eyeing a marble topped “mail order vanity” to replace the current vanity!

hollymathisinteriorssimplebathroom

Floor and wall tile original as are huge but porcelain towel bars! Wall color is good ol’ BM REVERE PEWTER…clean and simple.  I think that is the key if tile isn’t perfect and things aren’t exactly houw you want just keep it clean and simple! I actually kind of love the floor tile even though it’s cracked. Old tile setting was so different ..very deep.

masterbath

The light is the Schoolhouse Electric Otis with the schoolhouse shade.  I used this light several places in our home in hallways and baths.

masterbathnewknobs

The room is so small I can’t even really get a shot of the shower with curtain closed.  It’s just plain jane white.

My bestie Camille (who came to see the new house yesterday..so fun to see her) recently did some similar paint slathering in her new old house in Abilene.  Check her post here . . . the before and after are amazing.

camillebathroom

She is more the DIY girl and she used a different product but similar results! Bottom line if you have a shower you hate go for it! I will share more later on what I did with the boys pink floor..simple white but its working for now!
