Cape Town - There is no more personal a room than the bathroom, and homeowners can use this private space to embrace their own personal style.

At the centre of any domestic bathroom is the ever-important basin and tap. It is important to pair the two to ensure a unique style and statement bathroom feature.

Craig Taylor of Bathroom Butler says spending time and money on designing a bathroom space is becoming increasingly important.

“From its former role as a hidden, exclusively functional space, the bathroom has achieved the status of a proper room, with the same importance placed on decorating it as the rest of the home. As such, it has increasingly become the object of the careful attention of both homeowners and architects, who treat it as a privileged space that can assume different functions.

“The bathroom of today is treated as a central core of the home – a place to linger and relax. We spend an increasing amount of time in our bathrooms each day, whether it’s bathing the kids, getting ready for work or a night out, or washing away the day gone by. Putting some thought into the design of your bathroom can make a huge impact on your experience,” says Taylor.

Modern moods go organic

The use of chrome, brushed satin or polished satin in tap material has an enduring elegance, suited to most bathroom styles. But the shape and profile of the tap can offer a different look and feel.

Jasmin Kraneveldt of tile and sanitaryware supplier Bathroom Bizarre says the trend is towards organic bathroom design, rather than opulence and colour.

“As well as incorporating the constantly growing eco-friendly trend, bathrooms this year will also adopt more open space, as well as striking sanitary fittings and showers that stand as features in their own right. It is all about interesting designs, practically attractive layout and clean and unfussy lines.”

The contemporary school of design that embraces minimalism and modern brassware is no exception. Clean, simple lines offer neat, fresh appeal.

A mixer allows for easy use and cuts down on clutter around the tap. A paddle or lever handle, whether situated on the top of the spout or at the side of the tap, is an effective way to manage the water source.

The spout is likely to be elegant and functional, with angular lines for a more dramatic, modern look. Square tap profiles that tie in with accessories can also bring an up-to-date look and energy.

Waterfall spouts are popular for baths and basin as they deliver water in a quiet, splayed fashion, rather than the usual stream.

Today’s taps are also environment friendly.

“The modern bathroom is fresh, elegant, slick and unafraid to experiment with new trends for the realisation of a relaxed living environment. And it is increasingly drawing from our natural surrounds to achieve this,” says Taylor.

Chrome continues to dominate the material choice for taps. It can be brushed or lightly buffed for an attractive appearance.

Black, diamond-finish taps, with single tap heads or mixers, offer a distinct texture and hue, which is highly contemporary.

The basin itself should be clinical, with defined edges and placed on a cool, modern surface, such as granite or Corian. Open cabinetry and suspended vanities complete a modern look.

“Floating vanities and free-standing baths make for clean, chic and modern-looking bathrooms. Fittings such as floating vanities which attach directly on to the wall can help create a larger-looking and more flowing space in the bathroom area, as well as providing a clean and modern atmosphere,” says Kraneveldt.

Basins can be found in a variety of interesting materials, such as enamel and steel. Glass and quartz offer new-age fabrics that modernise the interior of bathrooms. Other materials suited to the modern bathroom are copper and ceramic with a metallic finish.

Bette, bathroom suppliers, uses all-natural raw materials, such as glass and titanium steel, for the manufacture of a unique product that is strong, scratch-resistant, impact-resistant and permanently retains its shape.

This combination of steel and enamel means the product will keep its brand-new look for many years.

Modern shapes include square and rectangular basins or free-standing pedestal basins in a chunky rounded finish.

Water-saving taps are another must-have item in the up-to-date bathroom.

“Different faucet manufacturers use different methods to ensure their taps are water efficient – namely aerators, flow restrictors, and cartridges built into the mixers that lower the flow rate,” says Kraneveldt.

Traditional trends

A stand-out characteristic of traditional styles is the fabric used. Standard brass is an economical option and can incorporate other materials, such as pot metal or plastic. DZR brass is high quality, with the perfect amount of zinc included in the make-up. It ensures no leaching and guarantees a longer-lasting product, ideal for bathroom taps, and the brass can be polished to a high sheen.

The inset basin is placed directly into a pre-designated cavity. The rim peeps over the edge of the surface top, which is often placed on a full piece of furniture.

The underslung basin sits below the surface, creating a concealed receptacle that shows off the surface top. The hidden sink also has hygiene advantages as the top can be easily cleaned.

A set-top basin can also boast clean, simple lines.

Bathroom Bizarre has recently introduced a new imported range of ultra-thin basins.

A pedestal sink can conform to tradition, says Kraneveldt. “Freestanding pedestal basins are a great way to make a strong visual statement in a bathroom, thanks to their distinctive aesthetic, and they are a great option for a bathroom where space is at a premium.”

She says vintage-inspired pedestal basins have made a huge comeback. “It’s a pure example of what goes around, comes around.”

Old-fashioned spouts boast chunky base elements with vintage detail around the spout extension which can include ornate curves with a kink and “chess piece-style” components. And the handles of the widespread three-hole configurations are often traditional side handles. The ever-popular spider handles are still very much in vogue.

Classic basins need to conform to simple, clean lines and styles of installation to stand the test of time. Round and oval shapes offer a restful feel, ideal to pair with established tap styles. Although most traditional basins are in classic white porcelain, there are eclectic options available, such as stone and pure granite, offering a rustic take.

How you mount taps makes all the difference

The placement of spouts and bath and basin mixers or tap handles can alter the style dramatically.

HOME looks at a few options:

The areas around a drop-in basin offer superb opportunities to surface-mount taps on either side of a spout.

The surface-mounted tap will make use of either a curved extension, with a sharp square edge that allows the spout to sit horizontally over the basin or bath or gently protrude over the lip of the basin. The lever is then situated either to the side of the spout or at the back, in the case of basins.

Wall-mounted spouts can feature a small curved end or a sharp 90 degree drop with a spout long enough to reach over the basin or bath

An elevated spout can be serviced by a wall mixer or paddle handle.

Wall spouts have a modern, up-to-date appeal and can be positioned to fill the basin directly from the wall.

Monoblock basin mixers feature all-in taps and spout placed on the surface as one element.

Whether it’s the ultimate retreat to soak away the day’s worries or the busiest room in the house, your bathroom should be functional, easy to clean and safe. Getting to that point with a bathroom renovation can be time-consuming, expensive and messy, but we have some tricks to help you.

MOVE THE UTILITIES

It might cost you more to move the plumbing around, but it could make for a much better layout and even allow you to have a separate bath and shower. A three-way bathroom can have its walls opened up to create a large space, with more room to create the ultimate layout, while a narrow bathroom would benefit from the far end being taken up by the bath or shower.

ALLOW FOR WET & DRY AREAS

Try to keep showers and baths furthest from the door. Keep toilets and vanities closest to the door, so any mess from a shower is kept away from the main traffic areas. Also consider the placement of the toilet; you don’t want it to be the first thing you see when you look through the bathroom door.

MAKE A WINDOW A FEATURE

If moving a window to make way for a shower is not an option, work with it. Provided it is waterproofed properly, surrounded by tiles and features opaque or frosted glass, a window in a shower can be a great feature of the space.

CAN YOU MOVE A DOOR?

Bathroom doors usually swing open against a wall, rendering the entire space around and behind the door useless. By moving the door into the centre of the wall and replacing it with a recessed sliding door, you can then use both sides of the door for utilities. This allows you to have a toilet on one side of the wall and a vanity on the other. It’s a good idea for small bathrooms as it makes the best use of the space available.

WATCH YOUR GAPS

Tiny gaps between vanities and baths or between the vanity and the wall that won’t fit your hand or arm will be impossible to clean. They will trap dust and water almost straight away. Either make sure you leave enough space to get your arm in there or have no gap at all.

WHICH END FOR SHOWER TAPS?

Give careful thought to which end of the shower you want to place your taps and showerscreen. If your screen is fixed, you want to make sure you have enough room to get into the shower without the vanity or other items getting in your way.

TIP

Make sure you have a clearance of at least 70cm from the front of the basin to the nearest wall. Leave at least 60cm in front of the toilet and about 20cm from either side of the toilet bowl.

HOW TO BE PRETTY & PRACTICAL

Go grey for grout! White grout on floors will always look dirty. Choose a grey colour so any eventual discolouration will be disguised.

Stop the slip Natural stone tiles with a bit of texture are a little less slippery for the floor than smooth tiles, but give them a test at the store or in your home by spilling water on them and checking how slippery they are.

Clever showerscreens A fixed, frameless showerscreen is stylish, but screens that swivel are ideal if you have kids or a shower over the bath; the hinged style allows easy access to taps and bathing.

Tap troubles Avoid mixer taps in the shower or bath. They are so easy to bump or play with and can potentially cause burns so are not ideal for families with young children.

Big vs small The bigger the floor tile, the less grout you need to clean. They also look great with a smaller wall tile in a contrasting colour.

Keeping warm Heat lamps are a good affordable alternative to underfloor heating. They might not be the prettiest light choice, but they do keep a space warmer in winter.

Height matters Consider the height of the tallest person in your home when installing showerheads, especially if the shower is combined with a bath as the floor height will have risen considerably and you don’t want to be squatting down to shower.

Smart storage Recess shelves between the wall studs in showers for shampoo and conditioner, and above toilets for toilet roll storage – or just simply to style and make pretty with candles or greenery.

It seems there is more to tackle than saving water when you want to go green in the bathroom. A while back, I wrote about why reclaimed sinks were the most eco-friendly option for wash basins at yök Casa + Cultura.

Regarding mirrors, the most eco-friendly option, since they are not recyclable, is also to choose them second hand. This, as with all reused objects, avoids more of them being made. In general, we tried to use as less material as possible without making the bathrooms uncomfortable. Instead of shelves for example, we placed plenty of hooks on the walls.

When it comes to the wet areas, we only covered those with tiles that needed to, like the inside of the shower and the bit above the sink. These square coloured tiles are the classic bathroom tiles used in Barcelona. Made in Spain by Fabresa, dry clay is locally obtained and undergoes a quick double firing process, saving energy and CO2 emissions both in the transportation and in the fabrication process. As with all tiles, it will be difficult to recycle them (only a downcycling is possible), which is why it is important to choose a timeless design, good quality material and as less surface as possible. The rest of the walls are painted with white low-VOC paint, suitable for humid environments.

Most of the floors have a fabulous mosaic flooring from 1900 which we restored. Where areas were missing (one of the rooms used to house the kitchen, which didn’t have a noble floor) we just filled up the small area with cement and sealed it. We managed to avoid shower curtains, usually made from PVC and not long-lasting, by installing recyclable glass doors.

The lights are second hand porcelain arms which we rewired so that they can fit LED bulbs. The vintage switches and plugs are new and very long-lasting as they are made of porcelain. They are also made locally, by Fontini.

After careful studies by Xavier Mor from Renòwatt, we came to the conclusion that the greenest option to heat our hot water for the showers are efficient gas heaters if we offset the CO2 emissions; which we will!

Last but not least comes the water in the bathrooms. At yök we do not only work hard to save energy, but also water. According to Airbnb, guests in Europe renting a home use 45% less water than when staying in a hotel. Even though, there is a lot one can do to reduce the water consumption in holiday lettings, especially in a country that is feeling the stress of the water crisis.

Here is a recap: we installed Roca’s L20 series of shower heads and faucets. They are equipped with aerators and Cold Start, meaning the hot water is only triggered if you move the handle to the left. Most taps fire up the hot water every time you lift the handle in the middle position, wasting energy unnecessarily. The toilets have a dual-flush system as it is the easiest for guests from all different cultures to understand without having to leave instructions.

Upstairs in our office, we installed the w+w toilet by Roca (top photo). It recycles the water used in the sink to flush the toilet. However, as it is made from a huge amount of un-upcyclable material (porcelain), we are not sure saving some water will make up for that. In fact, Roca had LEED analyse their different toilets and some of them, like the Meridian series we installed in the apartments, save the same or more water depending on how you use it. In the end however, we installed it not only as a water-saving and conservation maker (this is definitely working) but for space-saving reasons. The only way we could fit a toilet and sink in the small space provided was to install the w+w.

DIY Bathroom Renovation Ideas

If you decide that you're going to DIY your bathroom renovation, make sure to do your homework first. Make a detailed list of the changes that you want to make, bearing in mind that it is easier and more affordable to undertake improvements if you leave existing plumbing where it is. If this is not going to be the case you'll need to hire a plumber to make any alterations and additions to the water supply and waste pipes. 

A bathroom renovation, like a kitchen remodel, is one that is accompanied by lots of mess, dust and inconvenience. The dirtiest and most unpleasant part of a bathroom renovation is removing and replacing tiles.

Replacing dated sanitary ware and fittings is one way to instantly modernise a bathroom - and add value to a home. Installing a new toilet and shower head also lets you bring a bathroom into this century by incorporating water wise techniques - giving your bathroom a new look, saving you money, and reducing your footprint by cut down on water usage.

If a bathtub or basin is old and cracked, consider replacing as opposed to wasting money trying to fix up. A basic brand new bathtub comes in at a cost under R3000, and you can hire a local plumber to install for about R1000 - if you're leaving it where it is.

By replacing only sanitary ware and fittings you will be able to save yourself the mess, dust and inconvenience that comes with a major bathroom overhaul.

You'll need to have a basic understanding of plumbing to rip out and replace sanitary ware, but it's not as difficult as you think once you get started. Even doing all the menial work yourself beforehand and then letting a plumber do the installation will save you money.

Do be cautious when looking for instructions on the Internet for removing and replacing sanitary ware. Guidelines differ around the world and you may end up with more problems that you started with. Look for local sites that provide step-by-step tutorials, or ask around. With DIY becoming so popular these days, you're bound to come across someone who has already done the job and will be able to offer helpful advice.

Another problem that can quickly dated a bathroom is coloured tiles. Popular during the 70s and 80s, tiles in puce pink, avocado green and blue, as well as patterned tiles, still appear on walls in older homes. If you want to get rid of ugly tiles, you can consider hiring local labour to rip out and replace.

When shopping for tiles, do yourself - and your bathroom - a favour and shop for timeless white tiles or glass mosaic in muted hues that won't age a couple of years down the line.

Another option to consider for a bathroom renovation is to skip the tiles and install cladding using decorative boards. This option is great for a well-ventilated bathroom where excess moisture is not a problem, and boards must be finished with a quality paint that offers protection from a steamy environment.

Ditch the melamine countertop and fit a floating bathroom vanity with a 'his' and 'hers' basin. Bring in complementary accessories that finish off the look. Framed mirrors are easy to make and can be stained or painted to match the decor.

Paint is your partner for a quick change. Sometimes, all it takes is a coat or two of paint to freshen up a dated bathroom. Today's paint is versatile enough for use on walls and furniture, so don't forget to give the bathroom vanity a makeover as well. Do use a paint that is specifically formulated for use in bathrooms and contains an anti-fungal.

With the bathroom painted a bright, fresh colour it's easy to update with new taps, towel rail, and a few cosmetic accessories.

While painting tiles has become an easy way to cover up tiles, this is not a permanent solution and is only recommended if you need some time to accumulate funds to finally get the job done.
