Adirondack Theatre Festival is presenting The Boy in the Bathroom as part of its 23rd summer season of professional theater. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26-Saturday, July 29 and Tuesday, Aug. 1-Friday, Aug. 4, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee performance Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Charles R. Wood Theater.

In this musical love story, David has built an entire world for himself inside of his bathroom, refusing to leave for over a year. His mother cares for him, feeding him only food that can fit underneath the door. When David meets his mother's new caretaker, Julie, the two forge a relationship from across the bathroom door. They share stories, play games and trade knock-knock jokes, but will it be enough to get him to open up?

"This musical is adorable, sweet, funny, romantic, heartfelt and quirky," said Producing Artistic Director Chad Rabinovitz, who is directing the production. "It's such a captivating story unlike any other. It's the perfect show for the summer."

The Boy in the Bathroom is the winner of The American Harmony Prize and four New York Musical Festival Awards, including Most Promising New Musical and Best Book.

The book and lyrics are written by Michael Lluberes, with music and additional lyrics by Joe Maloney.

Actors include Alex Wyse (Broadway: Spring Awakening), Catherine Shaffner (Film: Hush) and Janet Krupin (Broadway: If/Then).

Bios

Chad Rabinovitz (Producing Artistic Director) is the only artist in the United States simultaneously serving as the Producing Artistic Director of two theaters devoted to new works: Adirondack Theatre Festival (Glens Falls, NY) & Bloomington Playwrights Project (Bloomington, IN). In addition to producing new works, Chad has directed more than 100 productions across the country, focusing primarily on new and contemporary plays and musicals. He is also the Producer of the Adirondack Film Festival as well a visual arts festival, Arts Fair on the Square. At ATF, Chad has grown attendance from 5,700 to over 11,500 in just 2 seasons, doubled subscribership, broke numerous box office records, introduced innovative children's programming and produced multiple best-selling shows in ATF's history. Under Rabinovitz's tenure, the Bloomington Playwrights Project has undergone what Bloom Magazine calls "a near miraculous renaissance", quintupling its subscribership, erasing all debt, and purchasing its building. BPP has sold out every single performance of every production for 3 straight years (and counting). Specializing in developing new works, Rabinovitz has fostered and directed premieres from countless prominent playwrights. He is also known for his unique ability to work with magicians on developing and directing their acts. For his achievements, Rabinovitz was the recipient of Bloomington's Manager of the Year Award, the Downtown Revitalization Award, Bloomington's Attraction of the Year Award and was honored with being on the cover of Bloom Magazine where he's referred to as "a visionary artistic director, savvy businessman, and inspirational leader." He was named one of the 100 Reasons to Love Bloomington and was awardEd Bloomington's 10 Under 40 award as well as Glens Falls' 20 Under 40 award in the same month. He loves living in Glens Falls.

About Adirondack Theatre Festival

A severely disabled boy who cannot see, sit up, walk or talk has spent a month “trapped” in hospital after a council failed to adapt his family home for his special needs.

Adam Payne, 11, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, has been unable to return home after spinal surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital. He is “living” at Whittington hospital, in Archway, despite being fit to be discharged.

He was taken there on July 18 by his mother Koli Begum in desperation after the failure to resolve an eight-year battle to have their Tottenham home, which belongs to Sanctuary housing association, modified by Haringey council to suit Adam’s needs.

Ms Begum and husband Liam Payne say they and Adam are caught in a “living nightmare”. They say the council’s offers of placements for Adam included a unit in Croydon used to house violent children, and residential homes in Surrey and Skegness, Lincolnshire.

The couple say Adam, who requires 24-hour supervision, has gone four weeks without a shower or bath because the Whittington lacks facilities for children with complex needs. 

Ms Begum has been living with Adam in his room at the hospital. She said: “We literally had nowhere to go. I went to the Whittington because that was where Adam was born. It seems Great Britain has run out of temporary accommodation or accommodation that can be adapted.”

The Official Solicitor is acting for Adam and a legal application is due to be made today requiring the council to fund a place for him at Portland, Britain’s largest private children’s hospital, in Marylebone.

Haringey said it had appointed an independent surveyor to assess the cost and feasibility of adapting the couple’s home, and alternative properties suggested by Sanctuary.

It said: “We have found a nearby residential setting for Adam, where he will be able to stay from early September while we find the best long-term solution. 

“In the interim, Adam is staying at hospital overnight and can access nearby day respite facilities. We are continuing to try to find alternative accommodation before September, but the very complex nature of the child’s needs makes this challenging.” 

Sanctuary said: “We have been working closely with Haringey council and Adam’s family to see how their home could be adapted to meet Adam’s needs.”
