Walk-in Showers for Disabled

Read article : Walk-in Showers for Disabled
Due to their increasing demand, bathroom showers are now becoming more and more user-friendly. Be it shower stalls, shower enclosures, or walk-in showers, you can get these in special designs even for the disabled. They can also be customized and personalized according to one's requirements.

Important Pointers

Barrier-free Entrance

There is a multitude of door options available for walk-in showers. However, when you are designing it for a person with physical limitations, it is always better to go for a doorless entrance into the shower. With a doorless entrance, one can get in and out of the shower area with comfort. If the person needs added privacy, blinds or thick roll up panels can be a good option. Apart from this, these shower enclosures have a flat, floor level, which makes entering in and coming out a lot easier. Furthermore, these shower designs also help to keep the water from flowing towards the entrance, as it moves towards the center drain.

Convenient Shower Fixtures

While designing walk-in showers for the physically challenged, adding the bathroom fixtures that are convenient to use, needs no mention. Placing the knobs of all the fixtures at lower height and at the center is important. Also, a hand-held shower is always easier to use. Instead of a wall-mount shower, you must go for a ceiling-mount shower with raining shower head, which ensures ample water spraying out and spanning the entire area. Apart from regular fixtures, grab bars must be fixed on the walls. The fixtures also include a seat for the user's safety and convenience.

Placing the shampoos, shower gels, and other such items might not be problem with shelving system, however, easy access to these, is of utmost importance. The soap dispensers, which can be used for storing shampoos and shower gels should be placed at the waist height, so that they are reachable even while sitting on the chair. You can also have extra glass shelves at a lower height to place other bathroom essentials.

There are entire shower sets specifically designed for the physically challenged people, available in various brands at several stores. Consider, whether the person using the shower area uses his/her wheelchair or another one needs to be placed in. In case of a wheelchair, it important to check whether it is water-resistant or not. There are a number of bathroom seats available in the market, which can be useful.

Bathrooms should be a haven of peace and tranquility, somewhere that you can get ready for the day ahead or relax and unwind after the one before it, with fixtures and fittings that perfectly complement each other to give a sleek, clean and comforting look.

Your bathroom deserves to have time spent on it whether you’re looking for new showers or even taps for an instant makeover, and whether you want complete bathroom suites or accessories to brighten the place up you need to come to us.

Victoria Plumb Ltd Image

Bathroom Suites
Everyone wants to have the perfect bathroom, and often that comes down to the bathroom suites that they choose. But, what makes the perfect suite is often very personal – a sleek and contemporary look might be the style of choice for some whereas other might prefer a more classic feel – but whatever you’re looking for in bathroom sets you can be confident that you’ll find it here.

Showers
Showers are one of life’s simple pleasures, acting both as a way to wake up in the morning and to de-stress after a busy day. For many people the shower is the single most important feature of the bathroom, and with a whole range of shower systems and accessories available there’s now more choice than ever before.

Victoria Plumb Ltd Image

Shower Enclosures
Shower enclosures take pride of place in modern bathrooms, with many people preferring the convenience and sense of luxury that comes from stepping into their very own shower unit. It’s a world away from the traditional shower-over-bath setup and can bring a contemporary feel to any bathroom, and with everything from wet rooms to frameless shower enclosures there’s something to suit all tastes.

Baths
There’s nothing better than sinking into a bath after a hard day, slipping into the warm water as you’re enveloped in bubbles and any stresses and strains simply melt away. Of course, if you really want to have the most indulgent experience possible then you need to have the perfect environment in which to enjoy it, and the right bath can go a long way to achieving that.

Bathroom Furniture
While many people believe bathrooms to be the coldest rooms in the home, this does not have to be the case. Some people may feel limited when purchasing fitted bathroom furniture in their bathroom as they believe there aren't many options available.

Victoria Plumb Ltd Image

Heated Towel Rails
Towel rails and radiators are crucial components in any bathroom. They ensure that the room is kept comfortably warm and that your towels dry much more efficiently than if they had simply been left to hang on a traditional, unheated towel rail.

Taps
The bathroom and kitchen are perhaps the two most-used rooms of the house, as they supply the setting for preparing food and bathing - essential daily tasks. It is therefore no wonder that many people choose to decorate these rooms using design-conscious furnishings which are as attractive as they are practical.

Accessories
As specialists in bathroom suites, at Victoria Plumb we stock a wide range of bathroom mirrors with lights and without, essential accessories, waste fittings and fixing kits; offering everything any new bathroom needs to be fully-functional and stylish.

A History of Baths and Showers

By Tim Lambert

Baths and Showers in the Ancient World

The Egyptians are known for their cleanliness (they bathed frequently) and they used many cosmetics. Meanwhile in Babylon before 2,000 BC a form of soap was made. The Greeks knew that diet and exercise and keeping clean were important for health. The Greeks even invented a form of shower, which sprayed bathers with water.

Most Greeks washed in a bowl on a pedestal called a louterion though the rich sometimes had bathrooms. People rubbed themselves with olive oil then rubbed it off with a tool called a strigil.

The Romans also knew that dirt encourages disease and they appreciated the importance of cleanliness. They built aqueducts to bring clean water into towns. In Roman towns an important building was the public baths. In Roman times people went to the baths not just to get clean but also to socialize. Roman Baths consisted of a frigidarium or cold room, a Tepidarium or warm room and a caldarium or hot room. You usually finished with a dip in a cold pool. To clean themselves Romans rubbed their skin with oil and scraped it off with a tool called a strigil. (The Romans also made soap).

Roman women also used razors, pumice stone, tweezers and depilatory creams to remove unwanted body hair.

Baths in the Middle Ages

In the Middle Ages there were bathhouses in many towns were people could pay to have a bath. Furthermore in Northern Europe in the Middle Ages people took sweat baths.

In the 14th century Edward III installed a bathroom in the Palace of Westminster. Other people made do with wooden tubs in their bedrooms.

Furthermore in the Middle Ages there was an important soap making industry in England (although many people made their own soap at home). In the Middle Ages people used combs and tweezers. They also used toothpicks and mouthwashes.

In the Middle Ages in monasteries streams provided clean water. Dirty water was used to clear toilets, which were in a separate room. Monks also had a room called a laver where they washed their hands before meals.

Baths and Showers 1500-1800

Most Tudors cared about their appearance. People carried mirrors made of glass or steel. They also carried combs and used tweezers, ear scoops and bone manicure sets. In the Summer people sometimes had a bath in the local river. Sometimes they heated a cauldron of water and had a strip wash. Or they could have a 'dry wash' by rubbing themselves with clean linen.

In the 16th century bathrooms were very rare but Henry VIII had a bathroom in Hampton Court Palace. It had a simple boiler for hot water.

In the 17th century people used toothpicks but in the latter part of the century toothbrushes were introduced. (Toothbrushes came from China. They were first mentioned in 1498). People also made scented soaps. Then in 1767 Englishman William Feetham invented the first modern shower. However in Britain showers did not become common until the late 20th century.

Baths and Showers in the 19th Century and 20th Century

In the mid 19th century middle class homes began to have bathrooms. Having a bath was also made much easier when Benjamin Waddy Maughan invented the gas water heater in 1868. The electric water heater was invented in 1889 by Edwin Ruud. Working class houses with bathrooms were first built around 1900 and in the 1920s council houses were built with bathrooms. However at that time bathrooms were still a luxury. As late as the early 1960s many homes in Britain did not have a bathroom.

From about 1800 portable metal bathtubs gradually replaced wooden ones and in the 19th century some people used hand-pumped showers.

In the 19th century toothpaste was sold in jars until 1892 when Washington Sheffield invented the collapsible toothpaste tube. Meanwhile in 1888 the first modern deodorant was invented. It was called Mum.

The first safety razors for men were sold in 1901. Women first began to shave under their arms in the 1910s. The first razor for women was introduced in 1915.

In the 19th century most homes also had a scullery. In it was a 'copper', a metal container for heating water for washing clothes. The copper was filled with water and soap powder was added. To wash the clothes they were turned with a wooden tool called a dolly. Or you used a metal plunger with holes in it to push clothes up and down. Wet clothes were wrung through a device called a wringer or mangle to dry them. The clothes wringer or mangle was invented by Robert Tasker in 1850.

Simple hand operated washing machines were invented in the 18th century. The first electric washing machine was made in 1907. In Britain washing machines first became common in the late 1950s and 1960s. Meanwhile The electric clothes dryer was invented in 1935 by a man named J. Ross Moore. The first laundromat opened in Fort Worth, Texas in 1934. The first laundrette in Britain opened in 1949.

Joel Houghton invented the first dishwasher in 1850. However it was not a success. Josephine Cochrane invented the first successful dishwasher in 1886. By 2009 36% of households in Britain had a dishwasher. Steel wool cleaning pads were invented in 1913.

Meanwhile soap was rationed in Britain from 1942 to 1950.

image

People used to wash their clothes with soap flakes. The first synthetic detergent was invented in Germany during the First World War. In the following decades detergents were gradually improved and became more common. Today washing is much easier than it was in the past.

Santa Rosa could add portable bathrooms, showers for homeless

Read article : Santa Rosa could add portable bathrooms, showers for homeless

Santa Rosa is considering providing portable bathrooms and showers for homeless people as part of a broader effort to reach out to people in need of housing and social services.

Options to be explored by the City Council Tuesday include extending the hours of public bathrooms, renting portable toilets and handwashing stations, or renting a combination shower/restroom trailer.

Details of each option — including where the services would be located — won’t be worked out until after the council weighs in. But city staff and service providers feel that a mobile shower/restroom unit may represent the most effective option.

“Bathrooms and showers are one of the most requested things by people who are experiencing homelessness,” said Jennielynn Holmes-Davis, director of shelter and housing at Catholic Charities.

Such a trailer, which would cost about $74,000 per year to rent, would not only provide needed facilities for people living outdoors, but would best help providers build trust with people who need housing the most, Holmes-Davis said.

She envisions the trailer being used by the county’s new homeless outreach team, the group of social workers and mental health specialists who team up with law enforcement officers to encourage people to seek shelter. Santa Rosa is spending $415,000 to fund an expansion of the county program in the city to include rehousing vouchers, the cleanup of encampments and a homeless hotline.

The Homeless Outreach Service Team, known as HOST, could use the promise of a bathroom and shower to not only initially connect with homeless people, but also as a way to follow-up with them later, Holmes-Davis said.

The trailer could be taken to places where homeless people congregate and would be monitored by HOST staff at all times, she said. Outreach staff at the site could assess what homeless people’s other needs may be and steer them toward appropriate services, she said.

A less-expensive option would involve renting about 10 portable toilets and handwashing stations and putting them in locations where they are most needed. That would cost about $22,000 per year, including the cost of cleaning, according to city staff.

Unlike the trailers, which would be moved to new locations daily, the portable toilets would be accessible 24/7. Either move would reduce the amount of waste in local waterway, officials said.

Both the portable toilets and the trailer raise a host of questions, however. Would they be located on public or private property? For how long? How would the equipment be transported to and from remote locations? How much say would neighbors have in the locations selected? Would the toilets and showers merely reduce or encourage sleeping outdoors?

Such issues will have to be worked out if the council opts to move forward.

A third option is expanding the hours that public bathrooms in parks or other public areas like City Hall are open to the public. Park bathrooms are generally open from dawn to dusk.

Keeping them open later or all night long might seem less expensive than renting portable toilets, but the costs could be higher, said Dave Gouin, the city’s director of economic development and housing.

That’s because the bathrooms would need to be cleaned more often and monitored by security, he said.

“What we’re being told by the service providers is that they need to be supervised restrooms,” Gouin said.

Santa Ana riverbed homeless ask supervisors for portable bathrooms, showers

Read article : Santa Ana riverbed homeless ask supervisors for portable bathrooms, showers

More than a dozen homeless people living on the banks of the Santa Ana River – and their advocates – pleaded with the Orange County Board of Supervisors to bring portable bathrooms and showers to the encampment, saying people there are suffering because they lack access to basic amenities.

Yet the county said it is unlikely to do so because it wants to focus resources on long-term solutions to homelessness and does not want to encourage people to live in the area, which it calls unsafe.

Several homeless people at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting spoke about the daily difficulty they experience in finding bathrooms to use, places to clean themselves and locations to fill their water jugs.

Yvonne Martinez, who said she lives in a riverbed tent with her five children, ages 10 to 16, said she takes her kids to a nearby park to use the bathroom and bathe in public sinks so they can be clean at school. But she said Orange police sometimes tell her to leave the park.

“I’m here asking you guys to please help us out,” said Martinez, who soon after was contacted by the county’s public health workers and a nonprofit that helps low-income families find housing.

Homeless people living in the riverbed regularly try to use bathrooms at nearby businesses and if they cannot, sometimes defecate in buckets.

County spokeswoman Carrie Braun said the county had attempted to help people in the riverbed but that many had “repeatedly declined resources by county outreach and engagement teams.” She also pointed out that the county’s emergency Courtyard shelter in Santa Ana, which opened in October, still has space.

“For the county to provide short-term solutions like restrooms or showers to individuals encamped along the flood control channel does not encourage progress from homelessness to sustainable solutions,” Braun said. “The county will continue to focus its effort on long-term solutions that respect the rights and responsibilities of both the housed and unhoused in our communities.”

The county is set to open another year-round homeless shelter in Anaheim early next month. It is expected to shelter 100 people when it opens, focusing on quickly finding them permanent housing.

In late March, Supervisor Shawn Nelson directed staff to find county-owned properties that could accommodate an emergency homeless shelter or campground for homeless people. Nelson said Wednesday that he soon would be releasing his suggestions for potential locations that could be used for that purpose.

Last year, the county installed portable toilets at the Civic Center for the area’s homeless encampment but removed them after the Courtyard shelter was opened.
