Modern white bathroom with textured tiles, shower zone and central bench with storage

Read article : Modern white bathroom with textured tiles, shower zone and central bench with storage

This bright, white bathroom features a textural tile wall and contrasting rich wenge wood surfaces

When not one but several elements provide a stand-out feature in a bathroom design then the result is a sense of enveloping luxury.

Just such a feel was requested for this 28m2 bathroom by designer Paul Bentham at Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath. A sum of its parts, the project has several key features, says Bentham.

"However, the star of the renovated space is undoubtedly the undulating 3D wall tile. This creates a dramatic light and shadow play while fulfilling the agenda for a bright, white space."

Contrasting the white tiles, the tops of the vanity and central bench are in solid wenge, with waterfall sides. The natural wood is also sealed to make the surface impervious to water.

And the use of wood is continued on the framing for the huge mirror which expands the room visually and brings in light by reflecting the view out the window on the opposite wall.

"The window's white quartz frame mimics wood trim but will last forever," says Bentham.

Replacing a seldom-used tub and tub deck, the designer set a generous shower area along the back wall of the house, with the picture window at dead centre. The shower zone has three areas, including a large central rainhead.

The square rainhead showerhead is flanked by his and hers showering points at opposite ends of the zone, each with its own fixed head and hand shower, tiled bench and storage niche.

"The Kohler Reve sinks are semi-recessed into the vanity benchtop," says Bentham. "Set on tall mirrored toekicks, the vanity, bench and storage cabinet, or armoire, all appear to float above the marble floor. Under the sinks, U-shaped drawers in solid walnut allow room for plumbing while still providing storage."

The designer also added storage space under the seat bench and in the armoire.

Best Plants That Suit Your Bathroom

Read article : Best Plants That Suit Your Bathroom

We put plants in our living rooms and bedrooms, even in the kitchen so, when you think about it, there’s no reason to not include the bathroom in this list too. In fact, there are lots of plants that do well in the bathroom than in other areas of your home because they need the humidity.

View in gallery

In addition to their decorative appeal, most houseplants also help purify the air. Use them to improve the air quality inside your home. But before you choose the best houseplants for your bathroom, consider the environment it offers.

View in gallery

Some plants do well in spaces with low light, some need high humidity levels, some need lots of space, etc. Some of the best plants for low light environments are the alow, the bamboo, the orchid, the snake plant and the spider plant.

View in gallery

Another thing to take into consideration is where you’ll be placing these plants. A nice option is the countertop. It’s ideal for small plants. You can also place them by the tub, on the windowsill, in a corner, on a shelf or you can hang them on the wall. There are lots of options so now all you have to do is choose the plants you want to include in your bathroom dĂ©cor.{image sources:1, 2, 3}.

The Aloe (Aloe Vera).

View in galleryA good place for an aloe plant is close to the window but not in direct sunlightUse a transparent container to show off the interesting shape of this plantAny free corner or surface would be great as long as there’s some sunlight

Aloe Vera is a succulent plan species and it has been widely grown as an ornamental plant. Although it needs some amount of sunlight, the alow plant can burn under too much sun and this makes it a great candidate for the bathroom. It doesn’t need lots of water to survive so the humidity should be fairly enough to keep it healthy.{image sources 1, 2, 3}.

The Bamboo plant (Bambuseae).

View in galleryPlace the plant by the window and it will grow towards the lightBecause bamboo grows relatively tall, you should find a place for it on the floorView in galleryThe bamboo almost dissapears into the background with all the cheery colorsView in galleryMake a modern statement with a pot of lucky bambooThere’s plenty of space for plants in small bathrooms if you keep the dĂ©cor simple

Bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world so take this into consideration if you decide to use it as an ornamental species. There are ways to control the growth of bamboo plants. For example, you can surround them with a physical barrier. You can also control their shape and create all sorts of interesting designs.{image sources: 1, 2, 3}.

Orchids (Orchidaceae)

Orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants with more than 20,000 species. They do well in warm and humid environments and they’re all beautiful ornamental plants. All orchids are perennial herbs so you’ll only get to enjoy them for part of the year. Their flowers feature a variety of colors. White orchids are among the most popular.{image sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,and 6}.

Snake plants (Sansevieria trifasciata)

View in galleryThe snake plant is perfect for the space under the sinkView in galleryThe shape of this plant makes it wonderful for the corner spacesView in galleryYou can place it on the countertop, although when it grows tall it should stay on the floorView in galleryThis little corner by the tub is a perfect place for the plant

The snake plant, also called mother-in-law’s tongue (feel free to guess why) or Saint George’s sword is a species of flowering plant which needs little light and water to survive. It’s a great corner plant and a wonderful air purifier. It is widely used as an ornamental plant in both indoor and outdoor environments.{image sources: 1, 2, 3 and 4}.

The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Because of the shape, the spider plant looks great on a pedestal such as this one

Spider plant is a common name for several different plants but, most commonly, we use it to refer to Chlorophytum comosum. This one is also called airplace plant and it’s a flowering perennial herb. It grows to about 60 cm high and it has long narrow leaves. It’s a popular houseplant, mainly because it’s very easy to care for.

Vertical planters.

View in galleryIf you don’t have tiles on the walls, find a way to prevent the mosture from damaging themView in galleryYou don’t necessarily need big plants to get the look you wantView in gallerySome planters are specifically designed to be mounted verticallyA gorgeous vertical planter that fits perfectly in this modern bathroomView in galleryThis lush green wall includes a variety of plants such as ferns and lavenderBe creative and find ways to bring nature into the bathroom

If you really want your bathroom to look like a spa, then you’ll need more than just a little potted plant. You might want to consider having a vertical planter or a green wall. For example, you can use the wall adjacent to the tub, although the warmth might be too much for some species so choose carefully. Such a feature requires constant attention and care.{image sources: 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5}.

Trees.

Having a tree in your home is definitely something special. In spaces such as the living room there might be enough space for a big tree with a think trunk but the bathroom space is usually limited so if you insist on having a tree in there you should pick something smaller.

Hanging plants.

Hanging plants are very popular and appreciated because they’re some of the most practical types. You can save a lot of space with a hanging plant if you actually hang it from the ceiling or from a hook. You can experiment and find interesting ways to display hanging plants in your bathroom.

High-End Homes: French-style chateau on the Thornapple River listed for $1 million

Read article : High-End Homes: French-style chateau on the Thornapple River listed for $1 million

ALTO, MI – Located along a wooded stretch of the Thornapple River, this chateau at 5945 Tannon Court SE offers a French Country dĂ©cor with Parisian accents.

Joann Amash, who is an aunt to U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade Township, has put the house on the market for $1 million with Realtor Robert Antonini of Coldwell Banker AJS.

Amash said she decided to put the 10-year-old house on the market after her husband, Mike, died last year and their children started to leave the nest. The family has owned the house for seven years.

Located on two acres in a subdivision half an hour southeast of Grand Rapids, the three story mansion offers views of the river from centrally located great rooms on each level.

Guests enter the home through a large foyer with porcelain tile flooring and a cherry-trimmed staircase. Off to one side, there’s a small room with faux-painted walls and a grand piano. The room could be converted into a home office.

Straight ahead is the great room with a large limestone hearth and a series of ornately draped windows that overlook a deck and a path down to the river about 200 feet away. In the summer, there’s a deck on the riverbank that allows for relaxing and offers a launching point for tubing, canoes or kayaks.

The great room opens up to a large kitchen with a large granite-topped island. Appliances are commercial grade with a hand-painted French country hood over the stove. An adjoining dining area is filled with light by windows that surround three sides of the room.

A hallway from the kitchen leads to a large laundry room that also includes an island for craft projects and a built-in desk for homework time. Another door leads to the three-stall garage with a flagstone floor.

The master suite on the ground floor features a large bedroom with river views and a see-through fireplace. The master bath suite features a powder room, walk-in closets, a glass-blocked walk-in shower and a Jacuzzi tub. Beaded chandeliers and wall sconces lend Parisian style to the suite.

On the second floor, there’s a great room that Antonini calls the “Safari Room.” Palm branch ceiling fans hang from the barrel ceiling. There’s a hearth with lion head corbels and a bank of arched glass windows overlooking the river.

Now configured as a large home office, the original owners used the upstairs great room as a play area for children. With 8,400-square-feet of living space, Antonini says the house is flexible enough so new owners could easily change the uses of the rooms through décor changes and minor alterations.

Also on the second floor, there are two full bedroom suites. Both feature full baths and large walk-in closets. On the ground floor, there are two more bedroom suites, each with a full bath – one with a steam shower.

Much of the lower level is dedicated to entertainment. There’s a large family room with a stone hearth and wet bar for parties. There also is a billiards room and a separate home theater room with a large wide-screen projection system.

For grown-up pastimes, the lower level also includes a well-ventilated cigar room and a tanning salon equipped with a tanning bed. The lower level also includes several large storage rooms and a two-stall garage and workshop that could be used to store watercraft or other toys.

Technologically, the house is up to date with security and lighting systems that can be centrally controlled and a surround sound system with built-in speakers throughout the house.

There are four furnaces that manage the heat and air conditioning in various portions of the house.

Fun with Fiberglass

Read article : Fun with Fiberglass
Photographer:

Lightweight molded-fiberglass RVs are designed for long-term durability and improved mpg — and they look cool, too

RVs are constructed in a number of different ways, but many follow the same basic blueprint: Start with a steel or aluminum frame, build up the walls with wood and/or aluminum, more framing and composite materials, cover the structure with a roof and wrap the entire unit with either aluminum panels or gelcoat fiberglass. While conventional construction methods work well, another successful strategy has been in place for years and continues to flourish: molded fiberglass.

RVs built from molded fiberglass are sleek and shiny, and share their origins with the marine industry (think boat hull). In a molded-fiberglass trailer, fifth-wheel or truck camper, the rigid fiberglass body actually serves as the main framing element, as well as the interior and exterior skin. The body of the RV is essentially two pieces that clamshell together, resulting in a durable, corrosion-resistant body that is quite strong and can have several advantages over traditionally built RVs.

<a href=Casita Spirit Deluxe" width="400" height="267" />Casita Spirit Deluxe

“The two-piece fiberglass shell has one main seam around the center belt line,” explains Grant Bilodeau, president of Bigfoot RV. “Traditional trailers are made of many separate side, floor and roof panels, and are then screwed together with many moldings and seals. As RVs are meant to travel down the road, a traditional trailer will flex over time, and all the extra seams and joints become higher maintenance and risk points for leaking. With a fiberglass trailer, thereis only one seam to worry about.”

“Fiberglass molded trailers are sprayed into a mold with gelcoat and fiberglass,” Bilodeau adds. “The glass content is like the rebar in concrete — it gives you all your strength, as the resin binds it all together.”

Fiberglass construction can also lead to some positive results when it comes to fuel mileage, handling and durability. “Our fiberglass campers are 25 percent lighter than conventionally built truck campers,” says Keith Donkin, general manager at Northern Lite Manufacturing. “They are very aerodynamically designed for improved fuel efficiency, and they feature a very low center of gravity, which eliminates the sway of a conventionally built camper.”

Improved towing characteristics and longevity do come with a trade-off. Molded-fiberglass RVs can be a bit more costly than their conventionally built counterparts. But manufacturers of fiberglass RVs claim the difference in price can easily be amortized over the lifetime of the RV.

Dub-Box USADub-Box USA

“Generally, people like our trailers because they are easy to tow, easy to set up, and they last forever,” reports Kent Eveland, president of Scamp Trailers. “Most of the trailers we built in the 1970s are still in use.”

Robert P. Partee, general sales manager of Oliver Travel Trailers, agrees. “Most fiberglass trailers hold their value over the years much better than the standard-build types,” he says. “Constructing travel trailers with fiberglass has been flying under the radar for years.”

Often eclectic, sometimes retro-chic and always eye-catching, molded-fiberglass RVs are frequently the focus of online communities and club rallies. “We find our trailers appeal to all ages in part because of the nostalgia factor, as well as the simplicity and weight,” says Heather Gardella, president of Dub Box USA.

Check out the following collection of some of the more interesting fiberglass RVs on the market today.

Bigfoot

Bigfoot Industries manufactures a variety of travel trailers and truck campers, all featuring clamshell molded-fiberglass construction.

Bigfoot actually overlaps the top shell onto the bottom and uses a special sealant to further guard against water penetration. The 2500 series travel trailers include R-8 insulation, which, when combined with the fiberglass base (less conductive than aluminum or steel), creates a more livable four-season RV, according to Bilodeau. Seven floorplans ranging from 17 to 25 feet are available. The 25B25FB boasts a full rear bath, sleeping space for up to six and standards that include a porcelain toilet, aluminum wheels, heated and enclosed tanks, and aliving-area skylight. The option to enclose the A-frame and add cargo space is not only practical but looks great as well. Other options includea solar-power system, 11,000-Btu roof air conditioner, exterior speakers and an electric A-frame jack.

Casita

CasitaSpecs

For 33 years, Casita has been building lightweight fiberglass trailers. The 17-foot Casita Spirit Deluxe offers comfortable sleeping arrangements for three, with a bit more space for guests, provided they are of the smaller variety. Both sleeping areas convert to dinettes by day, meaning the trailer can easily accommodate more than it can sleep before the sun goes down. A couch/bunk-bed option ups the ante even more. The surprisingly wide-open floorplan means occupants won’t trip over each other while moving about. In Deluxe models, a large, full-featured bathroom is located at the front of the trailer, as is a roomy storage wardrobe. Standard features include custom marine-grade fiberglass furniture, carpet-lined storage compartments and a powered roof vent. Owners can also opt for LED lighting, a microwave, an electric A-frame jack and a larger gray-water holding tank.
