Waterworks expert on bath design

Read article : Waterworks expert on bath design

When it comes to changing a room’s design – especially if the space is long overdue for an aesthetic makeover – it can be easy to get excited and jump feet first into the project. But in a bathroom, where fixtures and materials are expensive to change, going into the overhaul without a meticulous plan might not be the wisest decision.

Perhaps no one knows this better than Barbara Sallick, co-founder and senior vice president of Waterworks, who has spent more than four decades in the bathroom design industry. Sallick has distilled all of her knowledge into an artful new book, “The Perfect Bath,” which touches on every possible facet of designing a dream bathroom. From planning to selecting the perfect materials and enlisting the help of a design professional, Sallick arms the reader with her trusted tips and steps through a diverse and breathtaking array of beautifully appointed bathrooms.

We asked Sallick for some key pointers to keep in mind when designing a bathroom.

Q. Designing – or redesigning – a bathroom is a big undertaking. Where do you start?

A. First, imagine the type of space and experience you seek and plan it deliberately. Consider the colors and trends that continually resonate with you and collect tear sheets of images that most closely represent the experience you are trying to create. Next, I always recommend mapping out your daily rituals so the bath is fluid and cohesive to fit your lifestyle. Towels and toiletries should be within arm’s reach, shampoos and soaps should have a home so they’re neatly placed in the shower, and install good, flattering light for applying makeup.

Q.What’s a common mistake?

A. Certain seemingly small things that often get overlooked are quite important – for instance, leaving space for the proper placement of towel bars or hooks. Before selecting shower valves and shower heads, consider the flow of water into the apartment or home. Make sure you’re placing your valves in the right place; installing them in too deep will leave you cold and wet. This is when an experienced design professional can help you find the appropriate products and avoid some of the pitfalls.

Q. A bathroom renovation is a big and often expensive project. What are some of the materials that will stand the test of time and keep the space looking stylish years later?

A. Classic white subway tile in the bath is always timeless and also beautiful and can be updated again and again simply by changing the surrounding accessories. My personal preference? Ceramic, handmade tiles. For the floors, selecting a large stone, avoiding 12-by-12 tile … a small mosaic is always a classic look. Most importantly, make sure everything is properly installed.

Q. In all your years of designing bathrooms, what has been the most popular color with clients?

A. My love of white baths has been contagious. White has infinite range, depth and shading points.

Q. What feature or material is always worth splurging on?

Invest in a beautiful floor. The bath often has a small surface area, so a high-quality floor is achievable at a range of budgets. Quality bath fittings and fixtures are essential, in part because they are often the most costly to fix should something go wrong.

Q. What trends are you seeing take shape that will likely hold steady over the next several months?

I am not crazy about trends in the bath. It’s a space you don’t often completely gut renovate because it takes a lot of time and can be very costly. I believe in installing classic fixtures and fittings and then playing with trends through accessories, art, paint and towels or bathmats. But if there is a trend, right now it’s all about gray.

Q. What’s on its way out?

A. Whirlpool baths. At one point, every renovation had one. However, this is a waning fad.

Q. What’s the best way for clients to express their vision to a designer?

A. You can start by studying your closet to identify the colors and trends you tend to repeat, collecting tear sheets and then sifting through them for the images that most closely represent the experience you are trying to re-create. Make sure to edit yourself before meeting with the designer. Curate your choices.

Q. What does your dream bathroom look like?

A. My idea of the dream bath, for anyone, should be that it aligns with the design of your home. Make sure it’s classic, timeless and refined. The installation should be meticulous.

Q. Favorite paint colors?

A. Farrow & Ball is my go-to brand. I love their paint pots and the quality of the paint – I have at least 20 in my basement. I have used many F&B colors but my favorite is All White. It is what I call a warm neutral, and is a great bridge between all of the tile and marble and the white of the sinks and water closets. My second favorite is Plummett. It’s dark and adds drama to the bath.

Q. Most overlooked feature?

A. Heated floors.

Changing a Small Bathroom Layout

Read article : Changing a Small Bathroom Layout

Most Popular

Changing a small bathroom's layout completely transformed the space of this house in Dorset.

HOW IT BEGAN

Jan Self, lives in a three-bedroom, 1960s end-of-terrace house in Wareham, Dorset. Her old-fashioned bathroom, with unsightly pipework on show, had a tiny basin and there was no space to put anything. Jan would have loved a shower, but with the bath in the middle of the side wall it was impossible.

Advertisement - Continue Reading Below

ACTION PLAN

  • Revise layout to include a shower over bath
  • Conceal all pipework
  • Install wall-hung basin and WC for modern look
  • Add more storage and surface space

How did you approach the planning? I thought over the options for a while and I had a clear idea of what I was looking for. I didn't want to compromise, so had been saving for some time. My neighbours had shown me their new bathroom – they'd placed their bath across the back wall, so I knew the room could accommodate a bath with shower over it. Then I began visiting local suppliers, DIY sheds and bathroom showrooms for expert guidance to help me source the right items. I looked at Purbeck Kitchens and Bathrooms whose vans I'd noticed in the area and was impressed by their website and showroom.

The bath fits the space perfectly, and water for both the shower and bath is controlled from a single valve.

So you were ready to get going… Yes, although planning took about three months because I wanted to consider every decision thoroughly. A 1600mm bath, slightly shorter than usual, fitted across the room perfectly while allowing space for a false wall to hide the pipework. The streamlined look really appealed, so the boxing-in was extended to conceal the WC cistern too, and create a handy ledge above the hand basin. Although the floor area ended up slightly smaller, it doesn't feel crowded because everything is wall-hung. There are no awkward angles, no visible plumbing, and I've gained surface space.

Where did you find colour inspiration? My beautiful artworks of local Studland Bay spiny seahorses by Dorset artist Cliff Towler were the starting point. I love these images, with their dramatic blend of dark and light. For a clean, classic look, I settled on white sanitaryware and creamy, marble-effect wall tiles. The tiles were actually my second choice – my first option was paler, but I'm glad now that they weren't available, as they may have made the room feel cold and clinical. The black floor has real impact and when I saw the black radiator in the showroom, I absolutely loved it. Green towels and leafy pot plants tie in with the paintings.

Are you pleased with it? Delighted, and it will stand the test of time. The shower's my favourite part; an utter luxury.

Doesn’t it this place makes you feel happier? I love the stunning colors brought to this light, airy home. It certainly makes it feel more alive.

Talking about happiness, I hope you’re feeling happy today, but if not, put everything that is bothering you aside. Maybe you’re forgetting to look at the good things in life and is putting too much of your energy and health towards the bad stuff.

When was it the last time you said “That’s it! I will think about myself right now”? We tend to always focus on people, on how they’re feeling, on how they’re doing or on how things are going and we rarely stop to thing about HOW WE ARE.

Take this day to look at yourself. Look in the mirror and only say what you love about yourself. Do not allow any criticism to come to your mind. Say all the things you can remember that you have accomplished in life. Try to remember all the details, from childhood, to your teenager years to this day.

Look at yourself and think about all the good things you have done to others. Even the small gestures count.

Now, look at yourself and say what a good person you are and that you are loved. Tell yourself that you understand that life has not always been fair but that you will always be here, you will always be present and you will always be alert.

Tell yourself that no matter what, you will always love yourself.

Also, remember to tell yourself that you’re walking on the right path at this moment. You’re taking the directions you need, you’re making the necessary changes and you’re paying attention. You are growing and you’re open to learn.

And most of all, tell yourself that no matter where this path takes you, you will always be loved.

Take today to remind yourself of how important you really are.

I know you can do that because I know you believe in that.

Modern white bathroom with textured tiles, shower zone and central bench with storage

Read article : Modern white bathroom with textured tiles, shower zone and central bench with storage

This bright, white bathroom features a textural tile wall and contrasting rich wenge wood surfaces

advertisment

When not one but several elements provide a stand-out feature in a bathroom design then the result is a sense of enveloping luxury.

Just such a feel was requested for this 28m2 bathroom by designer Paul Bentham at Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen and Bath. A sum of its parts, the project has several key features, says Bentham.

"However, the star of the renovated space is undoubtedly the undulating 3D wall tile. This creates a dramatic light and shadow play while fulfilling the agenda for a bright, white space."

Contrasting the white tiles, the tops of the vanity and central bench are in solid wenge, with waterfall sides. The natural wood is also sealed to make the surface impervious to water.

And the use of wood is continued on the framing for the huge mirror which expands the room visually and brings in light by reflecting the view out the window on the opposite wall.

advertisment

"The window's white quartz frame mimics wood trim but will last forever," says Bentham.

Replacing a seldom-used tub and tub deck, the designer set a generous shower area along the back wall of the house, with the picture window at dead centre. The shower zone has three areas, including a large central rainhead.

The square rainhead showerhead is flanked by his and hers showering points at opposite ends of the zone, each with its own fixed head and hand shower, tiled bench and storage niche.

"The Kohler Reve sinks are semi-recessed into the vanity benchtop," says Bentham. "Set on tall mirrored toekicks, the vanity, bench and storage cabinet, or armoire, all appear to float above the marble floor. Under the sinks, U-shaped drawers in solid walnut allow room for plumbing while still providing storage."

The designer also added storage space under the seat bench and in the armoire.

Cheap Bathroom Remodeling Tips

Read article : Cheap Bathroom Remodeling Tips

Marble tiles, a block glass shower enclosure, sober colored backsplash ideas, a beautiful wooden vanity with a vase of lilies sitting on it, and a lovely view from the bathtub! Isn't this the type of bathroom you would like to have in your home? I am sure you would. But if you are thinking that remodeling your current bathroom to make it look attractive is going to burn a hole in your pocket, you might want to think again. Remodeling doesn't always have to be in bigger numbers, since you can choose to make your bathroom look brilliant with affordable ideas as well. There are some unique things you could do with your bathroom interiors with a low-budget.

Remodeling a Bathroom on a Tight Budget

Right from adding a fireplace to your bathroom, to decorating the walls with beautiful accessories, you can have it all within an affordable price range. All it takes to make a bathroom look stylish and relaxing is some creative ideas to place the various areas in the room. There is a bathing, toilet, and a vanity area which can be designed in a unique way and decorated with bright and fresh colors. Adding accessories like wall decorations, candles, flowers or plants, toiletry closets, etc. can also work wonders. We have compiled some useful cheap bathroom remodeling tips, for your convenience.

Creating Unique Surfaces

  • When you think of remodeling your bathroom, the first thing that comes to your mind is repainting your bathroom walls and giving the ceiling and floor a new finish. Thus, when you create a new surface in any room most of your remodeling is done, as surfaces such as walls, ceilings and floors have a huge effect on the rooms.
  • To start with this, you can first think about a color combination that you would like to have in the bathroom. Pick colors that are neutral, such as; ivory, gray, yellow, green, violet, peach, etc., which are also colors that will give a sober and relaxing feel to the room.
  • When you choose a wall color, you have to make sure you pick a complementary ceiling color and a flooring option accordingly. Plain drywall ceilings and smooth tiled floors, or cheap laminate flooring can be excellent options to match the walls.
Inexpensive Bathing Accessories
  • After you have picked some suitable paint colors for your bathroom interiors, decide the type of accessories such as; bathtub, toilet, vanity area, shower enclosure, and storage area, you would want to have in your new bathroom. These are some essentials of any bathroom, which can be made stylish with some cheap ideas for remodeling a bathroom.
  • To start with the bathtub, instead of installing a new one (if it isn't cracked), build a deck around it (with laminate or stone surface) so you can place candles, and toiletries on the flat surface. If it needs to be changed, try to pick a unique shaped bathtub like; oval, rectangular, circular, etc. A Jacuzzi would be great, but slightly expensive.
  • The next is to choose the vanity area, which includes the sink, a mirror and an open or closed wooden/granite chest beneath the sink. There are a variety of shapes and colors to choose for the sink, and the chest can either be below the sink or the sink can be built in the chest.
  • Cheap backsplash ideas with a simple mirror could look attractive when paired with the sink and chest. Cheap tempered glass shower enclosure and ceramic or porcelain toilets could be your option if you want to remodel the bathing and toilet areas as well.
Simple Yet Attractive Decorations
  • One of the easiest ways of decorating the bathroom is to use minimum accessories to avoid overdoing.
  • Using colorful tile backsplash ideas can add brightness to the vanity area. Make sure the countertops are complementing the backsplash. You can make open granite chests built in the walls below the vanity to keep the bathroom spacious.
  • Ventilation is very important in bathrooms, therefore, make sure you have big windows with blinds or colored curtains (drapes are not advised). You can also add a room divider to give your modern designed bathroom interior a traditional touch.
  • More than making wooden cabinets (that are expensive) in your bathroom, I would suggest, have sections built inside the wall, so you can place not only toiletries but also decorations such as vases, flowers, pots, etc., on display. The floor can accommodate a few indoor plants around the bathtub or toilet, to include fresh greens inside the room.
You can use the aforementioned tips to remodel your bathroom without spending a lot of money. So make minimum use of wooden furniture and purchase stylish porcelain items so you spend in the right areas.
