Are Bathrooms Really that Sensual?

Read article : Are Bathrooms Really that Sensual?

We explore what makes sexuality such an oft-visited subject in the sanitary-ware segment.

Your hands are the most beautiful part of your body - one that helps you to share food, express love and show joy. Then, why do we use it for the, uhm, nasty business - asks Kohler in a new campaign - Hands are made for Love. Designed by Ogilvy & Mather, it questions the Indian habit of using hands for cleaning in the washroom.

Kohler's old Demolish ad played on the aspirational featureHindware's Designs to Desire campaignRoca's international campaign which is now in IndiaThe H&R Johnson TVCKohler's 'Hands are made for Love' campaign

Sushil Matey
Ramesh Kaushik
Vijay Asrani
Sushil Luniya
"It was a tricky brief. Usually people do not wish to talk about it. So, the challenge was not just to talk, but talk nicely about something people do not wish to acknowledge. We needed a higher order emotional appeal to tell people not to use their hands for things which do not reflect your feelings," says Ajay Gahlaut, ECD, Ogilvy North India.

Kohler plays in an area of hygiene that is not pleasant. Add to that the fact that television is usually watched around dinner time when the family is together. Keeping all this in mind, Kohler had to come up with something that talks about the functionality and yet not make it gross.

"In India, water is not just a rational thing. It is meant for purification. Therefore, saying that using water and hands is wrong would not work. We needed a positive angle to the story and decided to show what the same hands can express and do," reflects Salil Sadanandan, managing director, Kohler India.

But sensual?

Kohler's ad stands in stark contrast to other recent examples, which show bathrooms as stylish, and even sensual, places. The common notion is that it is important to play up sensuality to give the space a premium imagery. The segment in which Kohler, or brands like Roca, Artize (from the house of Jaquar) play are in the premium segment. Of the total market size of 28-30 million pieces, 55 per cent is unorganised. Of the organised market, only 18 per cent is the life-style (or premium) market. Though this pie is small, it is growing at twice the speed of standard segments.

A regular Indian will remodel his house maybe once in 10 years. Therefore, the brand must speak to the consumer in the moment he is about to make the decision and stimulate the experience in a way that other shorter term products cannot do (such as paints which are changed every two to five years).

According to Sushil Matey, chief operating officer, H&R Johnson, bathrooms are also the most intimate of spaces. "We clear our minds in this space. Many strategic and mundane issues are solved by us in the bathroom."

But most importantly, the middle class is expanding at a very rapid pace. With higher disposable incomes it is possible to afford luxuries which could not be thought of before. Increasing exposure to foreign lifestyles, rising disposable incomes and pride in their house has made the bathroom segment grow as much as the living room or kitchen has.

"The people we target are usually the well-travelled Indians. They are used to a certain level of class and luxury when they travel, and they are now slowly trying to demand the same in their own homes. Every bathroom in this case is a new statement," explains Ramesh Kaushik, marketing head, Grohe India.

Kaushik feels that bathrooms have evolved from one of the most neglected to the most aspired category in India. Grohe has taken this opportunity to speak to the upper middle class (and upwards). But understanding the joint family system in India is imperative for the brand and, therefore, they make their campaigns around the whole family. However many of the campaigns around the bath fittings segment show only a nuclear couple - maybe to add to the sensual factor.

But are these stylish bath fittings affordable? The entry level products from Parryware comes at Rs 100 while the premium segment by sister brand, Roca is priced at Rs 180. The core target for Parryware is the family, but for Roca is the nuclear couple.

The other target

Whether it is the family or the nuclear couple living by themselves, customers are most likely to invest in bath fittings that their developer or interior decorator suggests. So while a consumer will love an ad that she sees on TV, the developer's choice will be final.

In some cases, like Roca, brands invest more in the retail market. "We bring out campaigns that appeal to both the developer and consumer. This is especially helpful because a chunk of our client is from the hospitality industry, where the brand's name is of high value to the clients," explains Vijay Asrani, marketing head, Roca. The company's revenue is split 70-30 in favour of retail sellers as against institutional sellers.

On the other hand, Kohler's advertising is divided equally between the retail consumers and institutional buyers. A separate team looks after the 'decision-making' markets - consisting of developers, architects and designers.

Taking it a step further is HSIL, which makes sanitary-ware under the brand name Hindware. The company has developed a DVD app - Bathroom Planner - which makes the Hindware product range available to any user. The user can manage up to five projects at a time, can create five bathroom drawings for each project and compare a maximum of four designs for each bathroom product required.

"Today micro-targeting and content marketing is gradually setting the trend in the marketing sphere. This calls for customisation and personalisation of strategies to reach a niche set of consumers. In this case, we are talking of interior designers and architects," explains Sushil Luniya, president (marketing & sales), building products division, HSIL.

Much water under the bridge

With already a handful of players in the market, will the bathroom category show any new surprises? According to Kohler's Sadanandan, only 42 per cent Indian citizens have access to water-based sanitation. He sees the bottom end growing quickly adding more volume to the industry, while the top end will grow as more and more people move into a luxurious urban lifestyle.

Saji Abraham
Jagdeep Kapoor
According to Saji Abraham, executive vice president, planning, Lowe Lintas, India is emerging from the functional middle class existence it has had all this while. More and more people are seeking luxury and masstige has become a popular segment. That is a reason why there will always be a case for luxury even in bathrooms.

"You may not end up owning Jaguar's top of the line bathroom fittings, but imagine your joy, next time you have to change a tap there is a nifty Jag tap available albeit a bit more expensive. You would want a piece of that utopian bathroom wouldn't you?" asks Abraham.

Jagdeep Kapoor, chairman and managing director, Samsika Marketing Consultants however feels there should be a balance in functionality and aesthetics. While showing a shower working takes the functionality part, sensuality looks at the aesthetics. "Moreover, these advertisements have two purposes - to excite the end user and to excite the influencer. If the consumer brings in the pull factor, the influencer works as the push factor," he says.

All your bathroom solutions - Blackpool Gazette

Read article : All your bathroom solutions - Blackpool Gazette

BATHROOM SOLUTIONS features 50 bathroom displays, which includes showers and shower enclosures in the huge 30,000 sq ft premises, located behind B&Q, (at the end of the M55) Whitehills Business Park, Blackpool.

Showroom manager Barbara, and staff have more than 50 years’ trade experience between them in Blackpool and the Fylde area, and can offer help with design and arrange installation, if required.

“We carry around 2m worth of stock – more than any other retailer on the Fylde coast and that includes independent retailers and the national DIY chain stores,” says Barbara.

“This means that customers won’t have to wait weeks for their chosen product.

“It can be taken away same day or delivered by one of our fleet of delivery vehicles.”

The comprehensive selection of bathroom suites and associated products enables clients to customise their requirements.

“If everyone liked the same thing, we would only need to stock one style of bathroom suite,” adds Barbara.

“As it is there are infinite permutations with thousands of baths, shower cubicles, basins, etc carried in stock, so you can tailor your bathroom to suit your needs.

“Unlike other bathroom retailers we do not try to push specific mixes of products – we let you choose.

“We are just here to advise and help you to make the right choice to suit you and your budget.

Showroom

“We welcome browsers as much as buyers because once you have visited our showroom you will always remember us and hopefully return to buy when the time is right for you.”

Manufacturers from across the globe include Laufen from Austria, Rak Ceramics from the United Arab Emirates, Pura Bathrooms from the Far East and Saninova from Holland, as well as products manufactured exclusively for Bathroom Solutions in the UK.

To please the discerning customer, each bathroom display is complemented by natural stone tiles, available to purchase at Bathroom Solutions.

Other products include decorative ceiling panels, sanitary ware, taps, steam cabins, accessories, etc – it’s your one stop bathroom shop.

Established in 1986 with a small lock-up they then moved to a huge 20,000 sq ft premises, from where their better known business Classic Bathrooms still operates from.

Now with two huge outlets they give even better coverage of the Fylde coast being by far the largest bathroom retailer on the Fylde coast.

In 1986, people were looking for traditional shell-shaped bathrooms in burgundy or avocado green but now almost everyone is looking for white contemporary suites.

However, one aspect of the business remains unchanged and that is the level of service that the customer expects.

The team at Bathroom Solutions and Classic Bathrooms deliver first class customer care and most importantly after sales care.

They are very community led, having sponsored Blackpool FC’s family stand, Poulton FC, Foxhall Boys FC, Miss Blackpool and the recent trip by Quilligans FC to play in Blackpool’s German twin town’s Bottrop international tournament.

The are also suppliers of the eight large whirlpool baths fitted at Everton Football Club and suppliers to local celebrities, such as Keith Harris.

From the time they walked into my home, until they were finished, I found them polite and friendly. The two installers never said a foul word, which is rare in today's world. I really appreciated… that. They gave me the feeling that should I need to leave the premise, I could and not worry about anything. They kept everything very clean as they worked and cleaned up when they left so that I had nothing to do except enjoy my new bathtub. Very efficient. I am so impressed that I am having them remodel my other bathroom.
A very pleasant experience. I would highly recommend ReBath to everyone who is planning to remodel their home.

Around Iceland in 4 days with Happy Campers

Read article : Around Iceland in 4 days with Happy Campers

As you may have noticed here on the blog, I’ve never been a big fan of campers in Iceland. It’s not that I was against campers per say, it was just the very specific and often hard-to-tackle camper problems that maybe got my knickers in a twist a bit.

There were two things in particular that I had issues with:

1) For some reason, when the campers first burst into the tourist scene here in Iceland they were advertised in a way that made people think they could just park them anywhere and everywhere to spend the night. This was never the case, although the laws were a bit muddy back then, but now it is specifically stated in the law that you are not allowed to camp in a camper outside of a designated campsite. But to save money, and maybe for bragging rights as well, a lot of people that rent campers still break this law. And to locals, that’s infuriating. For tons of good reasons.

2) The rough conditions in Iceland can make it downright dangerous to travel around in campers in the winter but people still insist on doing it. I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer here but it’s just not a good idea to stay in a camper in a crazy storm (which some winters occur every other week) with the wind blowing at 90 mph. Plus that most of the campsites are closed and then it becomes difficult to follow the aforementioned law.

[embedded content]

So when Happy Campers suggested for the first time that we’d borrow one of their campers to travel around Iceland I was skeptical. Did I really want to contribute to this problem by introducing more people to campers? I know it probably sounds ridiculous but sometimes I just take my job as a blogger very seriously and I get tangled up in my efforts in being a good role model.

I also have to be completely honest (airing out my dirty laundry here) and admit that I’ve become quite used to staying in nice hotels with big fluffy duvets and fancy toiletries and I just wasn’t super psyched about sleeping in a car and share a bathroom with a bunch of travelers with limited access to showers. I fear I’ve become an accommodation snob – the first step is acknowledging the problem, right?

So I kept putting it off. I just wanted to know how I felt about it before committing to anything and to be sure it was the right thing. And apparently, it takes me two years to make a decision because that’s how long it took me to take Happy Campers up on their offer. I almost backed out last minute but seeing how excited Hrannar was, I put on a brave face and powered through it. Because I love him. And I don’t want to be accused of being middle-aged.

Full disclosure: Happy Campers provided us with a car free of charge but we paid for the insurances ourselves. We paid additionally for the extra SCDW because like I’ve said many times before I never rent a car without it. Everything else on this road trip came out of our own pockets. Furthermore, this post contains affiliate links so if you book with Happy Campers through these links we earn a little bit of commission. They won’t charge you anything extra but by using the link you help us out keeping the blog alive.

A little bit about Happy Campers

Happy Campers was one of the first camper rental companies in Iceland of its kind. It’s a small family owned company and the whole family still works there. The mom is the CFO, the dad the big boss and their three sons all work for the company in one way or another.

Talking to them we also learned that they seem to really care about what they do and their customers. For example, they share my view on it not being a good idea to travel in a camper in winter so they simply don’t rent them out during the coldest and darkest winter months. They also have a little booklet in all their campers where they remind people that camping outside of campsites is illegal and they give good tips on how to drive on gravel roads, how to replace a flat tire (with photos – good for car-idiots like myself) and all kinds of other important things.

Although I was still not completely convinced when we left ReykjavĂk I was at least happy to see the little details Happy Campers thought of to ensure a smoother ride for their customers and encourage a more responsible travel behavior. Because that kind of stuff actually matters to me.

Our experience with the camper

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed traveling around in our camper. We got a Happy 3camper (because I announced to them that I  would not be sleeping in their smallest camper – the diva that I am), a converted Renault Master that sleeps up to 5 people. Realistically, I probably wouldn’t recommend it for 5 full grown adults but it’s ideal for families with kids or smaller group of friends.

Sleeping arrangements

There are two seats in the front and then three in the back that convert easily into a double bed. Above the three seats is a bunk bed of sorts where 2-3 people can sleep. We didn’t sleep up there since there were only the two of us but used it to store our stuff at night instead.

Although the double bed was more than big enough for us I can’t deny that it was a bit hard to sleep on. I’m not in the best shape (I have sensitive old lady hips) and am used to sleep in our fabulously comfortable Tempur bed so I didn’t get much sleep the first night and kept having to toss and turn. The second night was better, it was like my body was getting more used to it at that point but for the third night we bought a cheap eggshell mattress topper that made all the difference and I slept like a log. Hrannar did better but he also complained a little bit after the first night. So if you’re like me and you have any issues with your hips or your lower back I would recommend you buy/bring with you one of those self-inflatable air padsor something to make it a little softer.

The mattress on top is much softer than the lower bed so if you feel comfortable with sleeping up there then that might also be a good idea. From the photos I’ve seen of the smaller campers, they also seem to have softer mattresses so I doubt this would be a problem there.

The camper comes with duvets and pillows which we didn’t use because we brought our own but they seemed to be quite nice. If you’re worried about being cold there’s a heating system in the camper that you can put on at night before you go to bed (just remember to turn it back off) which we hardly used. We were wearing our woolen long underwear under the duvet, a standard fare for campers in Iceland, and woolen sock which probably helped but as the resident ice queen of our family that usually shakes and shivers in tents cold was not an issue for me.

Cooking facilities

The camper came with everything you need to make a simple meal, including cutlery and pots and pans for the gas stove. It’s really easy to replace the gas container if you run out and at least in our camper we had a couple of extras at hand, There’s also a sink in the camper that is connected to a water tank that is easy to fill but we didn’t use it at all. We just used the washing up facilities at the campsites we stayed at which seemed like it was easier and would cause less mess in the car. We used the sink mostly to store stuff we wanted to keep at hand while driving that we didn’t want to fly all over the place in case of a hard turn or a sudden stop.

We bought some pre-made pasta at BĂłnus which we warmed up the first night that was kind of great after a long day on the road. We also opted to get a BBQ, which you have to pay extra for, and used that to cook hot dogs and such for lunch along the way. Camping and BBQs go together like PB and Jelly in the minds of Icelanders so this was essential to us but it might not be for you. One thing we learned though is that if you use the BBQ to grill some lunch you have to factor in a bit of waiting time while the grill cools down after you finish your lunch.

The thing we used the most was the cooler. It’s great because it’s plugged into the electric system of the car so it keeps things constantly cool without you having to worry about a thing.

Finally, one thing we didn’t have but wished we had thought of were camping chairs. You can get them as extras with your camper but we just forgot to think about it. We talked about it at least once a day (usually in the evening when we wanted to sit down and enjoy a beer in the evening sun) how we wished we had them.

Campsites and such

We stayed at three campsites: At Höfn, Borgarfjörður Eystri and HofsĂłs. They were all clean (although Höfn was the least clean but also the busiest) and they all cost around 1100 – 1500 ISK per person. All of them had plenty of space available but we were, of course, traveling in May before the big tourist and camping season in Iceland. All of the campsites had shower facilities but the only ones I used were at HofsĂłs (very nice!).

Because we were traveling outside of the main season none of the campsites had personel on the grounds at all times. Instead, they relied on honesty boxes where you’re expected to pay for the facilities. So it’s good to keep a little cash on you so you don’t become the douche bag (get it?) that uses the facilities but doesn’t pay for it.

We visited the swimming pools in Fáskrúðsfjörður (which is tiny by the way) and Hofsós (one of my favorites) but visiting the pools is a great way to keep clean and get rejuvenated after a long day in the car.

Tjalda.is has a comprehensive list of campsites available and you can find info about most swimming pools in Icelandon sundlaugar.is.

Overall camper verdict

In the end, despite the problems we had with the hard mattress at first, we LOVED our time in the camper. It was so great not having to follow a specific plan and just go where the wind took us. The weather was amazing the whole time (close to 20°C and sunny one of the days) and the camper just made the camping experience some much more enjoyable and comfortable. My attitude towards campers took a U-turn and I feel much more comfortable recommending Happy Campers now.

And if you factor the cost of accommodation and everything, even if you include what you pay at campsites per night, it’s actually quite an affordable way to travel. Especially for families.

In fact, we liked it so much that Hrannar is now convinced that we need a camper of our own. We’ll see about that.

When we were there for the wedding, as many... - Review of Ayres Hotel Seal Beach

Read article : When we were there for the wedding, as many... - Review of Ayres Hotel Seal Beach

The Ayres Seal Beach is an elegant hotel at a family price. An internet discount made my cost far less than any other comparable, surrounding area hotels that still didn't live up to the quality of Ayres Seal Beach. I have very high standards for customer service and cleanliness. The Ayres exceeded those standards. I appreciated no charge for using the parking lot that so many other like-hotels charge. The lobby is beautiful and comfortable. Check-in and check-out are very quickly handled by the friendly and helpful staff.

The location is smack in the center of 3 freeways that will connect you to many popular areas of So Cal. Having a full breakfast included in the price can save a family money. The only thing I would suggest is for the chef to alternate each day the bacon and sausage rather than offering the same meat for a whole week. I only had time once to enjoy the evening snacks. Bottled water should be added in with the other drinks as well.

Being there for 10 days/9 nights was like a home away from home. I appreciated the laundry room down the hall from my room since I had many clothes to wash. This immaculate room also includes the ice and soda machine. Housekeeping does an excellent job keeping the entire hotel clean, sanitary, and looking brand new. I think they even change out the comfy quilt before new customers check in. It appalls me how many hotels avoid cleaning blankets, quilts, bed coverings until they are really disgusting. I won't go into that....

I was working 2 different laptops at the comfortable desk in my room and did not have a problem with Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It was nice to have a good size refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker.

The marble & tile bathroom is huge. It privately separates the shower/tub and toilet from the sink area. Again, it's all very clean with lots of fluffy towels changed daily if you so prefer. The sitting area includes a sofa, coffee table, and small marble-top table with two chairs where you can eat or even do more business tasks. The flat screen TV is nice and located inside a huge Armoire that contains plenty of drawers for all your clothing. The mirrored closet is also roomy with lots of hangers and iron/board.

I didn't have a chance to use the outdoor pool and spa but they looked refreshing. The covered, outdoor courtyard is very pleasant with lots of sturdy tables and chairs. Many chose to eat their breakfast here rather than inside. There's even a working outdoor fireplace to add to the ambiance.

There are plenty of banks/ATMs, shopping centers, gas stations, churches, restaurants, and fast food places, some located within walking distance and the rest all along both sides of Seal Beach Blvd./Los Alamitos Blvd. Unlike many other 3-story hotels, this one has two elevators. Yes, I feel spoiled from my stay and miss the housekeeping now that I'm back home. :-)

If I could suggest just one main thing in the future, it would be for the Ayres Seal Beach to offer Concierge service. I had lots of luggage for my long stay and it was not easy putting it all onto the cart and then trying to push it back inside to fit into the elevator and down to my room. I also had a good distance to take the cart outside as there is not a designated zone for loading and unloading and I certainly wasn't going to park in one of the nearby handicap spaces.

As much as I also enjoy the DoubleTree Hotel Spectrum in Irvine, Ca., the Ayres Seal Beach far surpasses the good things they also have to offer (except for the cookie!!).

Without hesitation, I highly recommend the Ayres Hotel Seal Beach and look forward to one day cashing in my Stash Points (once they build up) for a "free" room. Thank you, Ayres Hotel Seal Beach for having a large, bedroom window that fully opens for that fresh, cool, beach air! It kept me from using the wall A/C most of the time.

See you in our City of Dreams | Food and Leisure, Lifestyle Features, The Philippine Star

The City of Dreams complex, which includes the Nobu Hotel, Crown Towers and Hyatt City of Dreams Manila, is set to expand Manila’s entertainment dreamscape with a grand opening on Feb. 2.

DiCaprio.

De Niro.

Scorsese.

They all want in.

What do they want “in” on?

Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch:

MANILA, Philippines - City of Dreams, the mega-complex of hotels, casinos and restaurants set to light up yet another area of Manila Bay with its official launch on Feb. 2.

The big question: Will Nobu owner Robert De Niro, Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese and heartthrob actor Leonardo DiCaprio actually be coming to Manila for that launch?

Charisse Chuidian, City of Dreams VP for Public Relations, tells us about a just-released local TV ad featuring the three Hollywood players capering about in a casino, with the tagline: “They all want in.” And a series of billboards outside the complex seems to hint as much. But, close to opening day, Chuidian and other City of Dreams bigwigs are keeping mum. What with Pope Francis visiting Manila this week, and final touches being completed at the 6.2-hectare City of Dreams (COD), this is probably not the time to go celebrity crazy.

Still, getting a glimpse of the three hotels making up City of Dreams — Hyatt, Nobu Hotel and Crown Towers — is enough of a glittering experience, even without the Hollywood glitz. Over a very fine lunch at Cantonese restaurant Crystal Dragon, Chuidian says that with 940 rooms available, a two-level casino open, and a bevy of excellent new restaurants (Nobu among them), City of Dreams looks to expand Manila’s entertainment dreamscape quite a bit more.

In a complex developed by Australian billionaire James Packer and Lawrence Ho (son of Macau gaming magnate Stanley Ho) through Melco Crown Enterprises, the P37-billion City of Dreams is yet another jewel in the burgeoning Entertainment City lining Manila Bay. But, while the flavor of City of Dreams is international, the staff uniforms are perhaps the most visible reflection of Filipino creativity: exquisitely designed by Rajo Laurel, Dennis Lustico and Vania Romoff.

They got gaming

The integrated casino resort — located auspiciously close to the “Fortune Egg,” the City of Dreams’ dome-shaped architectural landmark — is a gamer’s paradise, with 380 gaming tables, 1,700 slot machines and 1,700 electronic table games for both VIP high rollers and mass-market players alike.

If gaming’s not your thing, entertainment options include Dreamplay, Dreamworks Studio’s first interactive play space complete with movie mascots (you can leave kids there, if you sign a waiver; for adults, the rate is cheaper); Pangaea and Chaos, two trendy nightclubs run by the Michael Alt Marina Bay Sands group; a shopping arcade featuring luxury brands like Roberto Cavalli, Rolex and Cesare Paciotti; and eateries like the signature Red Ginger, a pan-Southeast Asian haven of comfort food offering delicious takes on beef rendangand nasi goreng, Erwin’s Gastrobar, O Kitchen, Ruby Jack’s Steakhouse & Bar, Apu Filipino Cuisine, and a Godiva Chocolate CafĂ©.

Hyatt City of dreams: all-day dining and aqua suites

Among City of Dreams’ three hotels, the Hyatt is the most affordable, with come-ons like a 24-hour buffet and Aqua Suite with shower area large enough to fit a family of four.

“You can hold meetings in there,” says Jose Badelles, Hyatt COD’s marketing communications manager, and though he’s joking, it’s actually true.

If you don’t require a room-sized shower, you can choose between a Twin or 36-sq.m. King room, which will serve as a very comfortable base from which you can access food outlets like The CafĂ©, a midnight buffet (all you can eat for P1,088) with five stations offering fresh seafood, fried and grilled items that are fired up only upon ordering.

“We have an a-la-minute concept, so you won’t see huge mounds of food but it’s all cooked fresh,” says Stijn Van Leeuwen, The CafĂ©’s food and beverage manager. “Customers can specify the doneness of their steak, for example, so there’s a very good interaction between the chefs and our customers.”

The Hyatt’s facilities include a Franck Provost salon, fitness center and outdoor pool, to which guests aren’t limited. Meaning, Hyatt guests can swim in the Nobu Hotel pool, and vice versa — a nice perk on top of everything else.

Game of crowns

Kevin Sim, chief operating officer of City of Dreams, welcomes us into the Crown Tower lobby, and we’re already seeing double. That’s because they’ve hired nine sets of twins to serve as lobby girls. “We’re different,” Sim explains, as the two ladies wearing pillbox hats gamely pose for pictures.

Double the casino space, too, as Crown offers two floors of betting options, including gaming tables, slot machines, electronic games and VIP rooms.

Crown Towers offers a unique experience for high rollers as well: the luxury of parking your helicopter at the Tower One helipad, literally checking in at the eighth floor and having a personal butler escort you directly to the casino tables. Talk about an inside straight!

Then there is that eye-popping “six-star hotel” claim. Whether such a category actually exists or not — most international hotel accrediting agencies claim it does not, though the term has been bandied around by plenty of casino complexes — the Crown Tower certainly fulfills every requirement of a topnotch five-star hotel.

The personal butlering service at Crown Towers is another thing that sets it apart. According to general manager Brett Hickey, the 80 rooms, suites and villas in Tower One are for Signature Club members only — you must be invited to stay there.

But what perks: all Tower Suites guests are assigned one of 48 personal butlers who will attend to their every need — whether it’s personal shopping, laundry requests, transportation, or getting room service from Nobu or any of the other restaurants in City of Dreams. Hickey describes a request last New Year’s Eve: a guest wanted to watch the fireworks display from the helipad level of Tower One. Not only was the wish granted, but with a bucket of chilled Champagne and canapĂ©s on standby. The butler service is as personal as you want it — and the same butler will be assigned to you, 24/7, for the duration of your stay.

Each of the rooms, suites and seven lavish villas of Tower Suites offer high-speed Internet access, JBL docking stations, flat-screen smart TVs and a gallery of luxury bathroom amenities. (Those staying in villas can choose from amenity brands such as Hermes, Acqua di Parma, L’Occitane, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chopard and Bulgari.)

With two towers and 254 rooms, the Crown has exclusive facilities as well, such as a private swimming pool (Crown guests may explore all the City of Dreams pools, but the Crown pool is restricted only to guests and members. Want to double your relaxation? Crown guests can enjoy the freeform pool with a welcome kit of Evian spritzer, smoothie and complimentary use of Christian Dior sunglasses.)

Such luxury does not come cheaply, as a three-bedroom Premier Suite at Crown Towers can run from P60,000 a night to P340,000 for the bi-level, 548-sq.m. Presidential Suite.

For your culinary needs, the Crown caters to rarefied tastes: The Tasting Room is a French haute cuisine resto where Basque chef William Mahi offers special six-course degustation and wine-pairing menus (including popular favorites like the 52-degree egg with truffle, 36-hour marinated salmon and aged Wagyu beef); across the way you will find Crystal Dragon, where Malaysian chef Bong Choi offers a heavenly dim sum trio (Four Seasons, minced duck with black pepper and minced pork spinach dumplings), stir-fried prawns with butter and crispy egg floss, and oven-baked marinated codfish with five spices.

If it’s understated, trendy & chic, it must be Nobu

One of the City of Dreams’ major coups is scoring the first Nobu Hotel in Asia, second only to the Las Vegas original.

The City of Dreams outpost continues what general manager Marlon Hirsh calls “the unique Nobu hospitality — understated, chic and trendy” being the main buzzwords that define the Nobu experience.

Inspired by boutique hotels and a Japanese bamboo motif, the lobby boasts the very first Nobu teahouse in the world, featuring hand-tied Ikaati teabags and a refined array of pastries. Plush shagreen elevators take you up to one of the 321 rooms, which induce an immediate Zen mindset with the shadow-style calligraphy on the walls (and the “o” in Nobu) signifying a free flow of energy. Other unique touches are the getaslippers and minibars, stocked with the Nobu sake and Matsuhisa wine that’s only found at 32 Nobu restaurants around the world.

Hirsh says Nobu co-owner Robert De Niro is very hands-on: “He sits on each piece of furniture and gives us his comments,” but again, no word on whether the legendary actor will be attending the grand opening.

At the Nobu restaurant, which is the largest in the world, breakfasts and other dishes on the menu have been “Nobu-fied” (or Filipinized, depending on your perspective), with Wagyu tapsilog, Sakana (Japanese fish) sisig, and paella on offer. Executive chef Zach Hillberry is the man responsible for the merry fusion, saying that these were the dishes he liked upon arrival in the Philippines, and that he included paella as a nod to our Spanish colonial history.

Of course, signature dishes such as Rock Shrimp Creamy Spicy, Toro Tartar with Caviar, and Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño are available to local diners, and “every meal at Nobu is meant to be a kaisekiexperience,” Hillberry says.

The bespoke philosophy of the hotel extends to the spa, where the signature Nobu Rakuen treatment includes yoga exercises to help client and therapist breathe together as one, followed by a relaxing massage with bamboo rollers.

No wonder the Nobu Hotel was fully booked during the holiday season, and is currently at 75 percent occupancy, with a clientele comprised of locals and Chinese from Taiwan and Mainland China. Many, it seems, are seeking that unique brand of Nobu hospitality found only in this corner of the world.

BOX FIORAREPLACING your bathwith a SILEX SHOWER TRAYINSTALLING THE SHOWER TRAYThanks to the SILEX collection by Fiora, changing your bath for a shower tray no longer needs to be a complicated andexpensive process. This is due to the fact that the shower trays feature an original and practical assembly system which coversthe wall with plates in the same finish as the shower tray. Finally, and thanks to the new collection, Fiora offers the possibilityof including polished aluminium profiling in the tray finish to improve the quality and aesthetics of the arrangement. Thissimple process ensures that the bathroom does not have to be retiled. STEP ONEThe idea of replacing your bath with the shower tray.

The noise in our daily life may entail health problems, from sleep disorders and moodswings to stress problems. One of the most requested solutions for defending the peace and tranquillity in the home is acoustic insulation. Thecompanies in the business continue to develop different materials in order to provide their customers with the utmostquality in fulfilling their functions. Therefore, representing one of the reference brand names in the business entails comprehensive compliance with allthe quality requirements. Fiora ensures compliance with the DIN 4109 Standard that refers to “Acoustic insulation inbuildings”.Through this standard there is a control in the reduction of both the air-borne and structural noise that is perceivedby the recipient. Good acoustic insulation is intended to minimise the transmitted energy. Therefore the appropriatematerials are those that have the property of reflecting or absorbing a significant part of the incident sound wave energy. Thus, both the material as well as the design and placement of the shower tray by means of the new rail-free assemblysystem ensure that when the sound waves hit it, a significant part of these are dissipated within it, thus reducing theenergy emitted on the other side. This is largely made possible by the large number of support points in the system; manylegs with their sound insulating blocks and a cellular rubber profile with a butyl finish.
