Bubble shower saves water

Read article : Bubble shower saves water
Oxygenics Water-Saving ShowerheadCSIRO announced they had developed a device for saving water by introducing bubbles into shower heads. But the technology is not new as claimed; such products have been available for years and even the wording of the media release appears to not be original.

The CSIRO described their work in a media release:

While the general concept of using an aerated showerhead to save water is not new, the technology behind the CSIRO's device is novel.

Developed by a team led by Dr Jie Wu, the aeration device is a small nozzle that fits inside a standard showerhead. The nozzle uses a small Venturi tube - a tube for which the diameter varies, creating a difference in pressure and fluid speed. Air is sucked into the Venturi tube as a result of the partial vacuum created, causing air and water to mix, forming tiny bubbles within the water stream.

From: 'Air shower' set to cut water use by 30 per cent, Media Release 06/223, CSIRO, 9 November 2006

In 2005 I bought an aerating shower head from the Australian business E-Co Shower. As CSIRO describes, the unit sucks in air, and mixes it with the water to give you a shower of bubbles.

As pointed out on PhysOrgForum, what CSIRO announced appears to be very similar to the existing E-Co shower. Even some of the wording of the the CSIRO media release appears similar to the wording of the E-Co web site from 2003:

  1. E-CO : "air and water mixing together causes bubbles"
  2. CSIRO: "air and water to mix, forming tiny bubbles"
Leaving aside the question of who invented what (and who wrote what), such devices work very well. It is difficult to tell the E-Co shower in my bathroom from a normal one. There is a slight tingling sensation, which is pleasant. As well as saving water I suspect the system uses less hot water and keeps the bathroom dryer. This is because there is not the very fine mist you get from many low flow shower heads.

Previously I tried a water saving shower head. When on the high setting this produced a narrow jet of water. I had to move around it the shower to get my whole body wet and the force of the water was almost painful. On low setting it produced a fine mist which did not seem to wet the body. Either way it was not a pleasant result.

The E-Co units seem to be particularly popular with institutions. There is a vandal resistant model which just has a small hole for the water to come out of, instead of the usual rose pattern. The unit is only about 20mm wide and 40mm long and can be securely connected to the pipe coming from the wall. As a result there is little for anyone to vandalize.

Also there is the Oxygenics shower head. I am not sure I believe the health claims for the "oxygenated" spray, but it seems to operate on the same principle as the E-Co and CSIRO units and they have a clever animation showing how it works.

Diagram of of Oxygenics showerhead

The innovative technology behind Oxygenics® is based on the Venturi Principle. As water enters the base of the showerhead, it is propelled through an accelerator fin to increase the velocity of the water flow. It is then directed through a channel where oxygen is injected into water. The result? Phenomenal coverage and a continuous range of sensations - from a soft relaxing spray to a deep, therapeutic massage to everything in between. Are you ready to be wowed? Get ready for a healthy, powerful, oxygenated spray!

From: Oxygenics, 2007

The only innovation in the CSIRO approach seems to be that it is an adapter designed to be added to a normal shower head whereas E-Co make a complete shower head. E-Co make an adapter for hand-held showers and basins. E-Co include testimonials from Canberra residents and from the Department of Defence, so it it difficult to believe that CSIRO didn't know of it.

There is also a US Patent for such a device from 1978, complete with diagram:

The passage of water from conduit 17 and through the chamber within the shower head establishes, in accordance with the Bernoulli, or venturi principle, a low pressure environment within the shower head. The low pressure environment tends to draw ambient air through outlets 20 and 21. The drawn air mixes with the water within the shower head due to the turbulent nature of the flow therein and is ultimately ejected through nozzles 31.

Because the ejected jets of water are mixture of air and water, the spray striking a bather will not have the conventional sting of sharply defined jets of water. Instead, the spray will tend to be "softer" and produce a physiological massaging effect which is very pleasant. Aside from the physiological benefits, the amount of water seemingly necessary to provide the bather with a shower to which he has become accustomed to, consumes approximately one-half of the normal water useage. Thereby, aerator 15 can effect a water savings of approximately 50 percent and yet require no change in habits by the bather nor in any manner curtail or restrict the habits developed from a lifetime of showers."

From: Shower head aerator, Richard Harmony, United States Patent 4072270, February 7, 1978

There are only two things I have found wrong with the E-Co shower: is the price and the web site used to sell it. The price is very high compared to a cheap plastic water saving shower head. But the device is very well made, from solid metal and comparable in price to fashion shower heads. E-Co let the quality of the product down with a poor web site, which makes it hard to buy.

There is also another use for a Venturi in a shower: This is the "Venturi shower", where cold mains pressure water is used to draw hot water from a low pressure tank:

Diagram of venturi shower"High pressure mains cold water is used to "suck" tank pressure hot water through the special venturi valve inside the unit, so that the resulting mixed water comes out at a much greater rate than could be achieved using an electric shower or ordinary shower mixer valve. The venturi shower uses no electrical connections, it simply plumbs straight into the heating system."

A modern shower for any bathroom

Read article : A modern shower for any bathroom

Just like fashion and everything else in life, décor also has emerging trends. Gone are the days of dingy shower cubicles and minute shower heads - today the modern shower is earning its rightful place in the most stylish bathrooms. Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager of Tile Africa, shares her expertise to help you bring your outdated shower in line with the latest trends and designs.

image

What are the latest shower trends?

Square, frameless showers are the latest trend, with clear glass to show off the tiles and mosaics. No more grimy shower curtains to be embarrassed about. The modern glass shower enclosure reflects natural and artificial light and creates a sense of space and openness. “It is now super fashionable to showcase the whole package and not just the shower door,” says Kate.

A new range of shower roses and hand-held showers reduces water consumption without affecting the water pressure and amount of water delivered. A water flow regulator maintains a predefined, constant flow rate regardless of the line pressure. The regulator reacts to water pressure changes and adjusts to decrease the amount of water passing through, while the flow-rate remains the same.

image

Pressure variations are compensated for and water consumption can be reduced from 30 to 10 liters per minute.

What is the latest look when it comes to showerheads?

Showerheads, previously available as small shower roses, now come in larger sizes, making this contemporary water spout a standout feature in the shower.“With the invention of water-saving shower heads, consumers can now spoil themselves with larger shower heads, as the size doesn’t influence the amount of water being delivered,” she says.

What has inspired these shower trends?

Modern bathroomware is developed with the scarcity of natural resources in mind. The latest products with green credentials are designed to make it easier for consumers to conserve the environment.

image

The contemporary bathroom has become less of a personal area and more of an experience of luxury and relaxation. “The whole package of modern tiles, mosaics and listelli encourages us to be more daring with clear versus frosted glass showers,” says Kate.

How can tiles be used to create a unique look for the shower?

A mosaic feature wall or column in the shower will grab attention. Shimmering glass, smooth metal or textured natural stone mosaics are a great way to create a focal point and draw the eye towards the shower.Borders add interesting texture to walls and the creative possibilities are endless. Wide or narrow, horizontal or vertical, borders can be created with beautiful listelli, tiles cut into different sizes or colourful mosaics.Textured tiles and pebble mosaics are perfect for the shower floor to make it less slippery.

image

What are the shower options for a small bathroom?

Most of us will admit to dreaming of a larger bathroom, but it is luxury that many modern homes lack. Fortunately, with adequate planning, even the smallest bathroom can be transformed to accommodate a shower and a bath.Though space may be limited, it is possible to fit a shower in a small en-suite or a guest bathroom by choosing a space-saving layout.

If you prefer a shower, rather than a shower-bath combination, you may want to consider a curved corner or pentagon shower cubicle. “This is a miracle space-saver as it cuts away a corner and therefore frees up space,” says Kate.

Where it is impossible to fit in a separate shower, an all-in-one bath and shower combination is the answer. A shower bath consists of a stylish bath that features shower fittings and a glass enclosure, so that you have the choice between enjoying a bath or a shower.

What are the considerations when planning a shower that will be used by children?

If the bath and shower have tiled edges, make sure these edges are finished off with a round border. Shower corners can be a hazard, so check that they are finished off smoothly, with no sharp edges protruding.Extremely hot water is another danger to consider. Turn down the temperature of the geyser fitted for this particular bathroom. Medicine and cleaning products should be safely stored in a childproof cupboard.

image

What accessories are available for showers?

A shower caddy is a handy accessory as it keeps all items, such as shampoo and shower gel for example, neatly together and within easy reach. A shaving or cosmetic mirror on a concertina wall stand is a practical option in the shower as it can expand and twist to achieve the right angle. Make sure that accessories are made from stainless steel so that they don’t rust in the humid and wet conditions.Additional storage space can be created by fitting glass shelves and a towel rod next to the shower. “Keep accessories simple as a bathroom can easily look cluttered,” she says. – Antonella Desi

7 stunning bathroom trends for 2017 revealed

Read article : 7 stunning bathroom trends for 2017 revealed

The bathroom is first and foremost a functional space, but it is also a space that can be beautifully designed to make it a standout feature visually as well.

Aside from the usual practical aspects of this space, Kyle Turner from Luximo, the local distributor for the luxurious ROCA sanitaryware brand, offers some insights into the main trends influencing bathroom design going forward:

1. Organic is back

imageKyle says organic elements can add warmth, uniqueness, and a rich tactile sensation to the overall composition. As such, materials such as wood, stone, metal and ceramics remain popular.

It is understandable why designers and homeowners alike admire Mother Nature as the ultimate source of design inspiration - organic elements can add warmth, uniqueness, and a rich tactile sensation to the overall composition. As such, materials such as wood, stone, metal and ceramics remain popular.

“Natural materials are being used to great effect to bring nature back into our homes. To stay within budgets, and to ensure easy maintenance and longevity, lots of indistinguishable imitative products are gaining popularity,” says Kyle.

“These warm organically-inspired or natural materials are used to great effect when juxtaposed with modern materials and super clean, streamlined design lines that offer practical and simple arrangement of spaces.”

2. Leading colourways

Darker more moody tones are making a huge comeback throughout the home, as well as in the bathroom.

“Darker tones, especially the rich palette of grey hues, are proving to be enormously popular. In the bathroom, they can be used on the walls and floor, and juxtaposed against brilliant white sanitaryware for maximum visual impact,” says Kyle.

He says can also integrate other popular colours.

“Matte, nude and neutral colours offer the perfect combination when paired with darker greys and blacks, and offer a great way of introducing some contrast to the overall colour palette,” says Kyle.

“Combinations of pastel tonalities in blue, green, salmon and ash are also on the rise, but only when used as accent tones. And of course, the classic all-white monochromatic bathroom never seems to go out of fashion.”

3. Metal and marble mania

image“These warm organically-inspired or natural materials are used to great effect when juxtaposed with modern materials and super clean, streamlined design lines that offer practical and simple arrangement of spaces,” says Kyle.

“Marble cladding on the walls and metal accessories in gold or copper are bang on trend,” says Kyle.

“There has been a stylish revival of this 70s aesthetic - brass has really become that most fashionable metal for the bathroom, and when paired with the nobility of marble, it makes a truly irresistible combination.”

4. Play with geometry

A variation of geometric shapes inspired by the strong lines of architectural and structural elements has really come to the fore with regards to tiling and ceramic cladding.

“Hints of the Orient and the Mediterranean are being introduced in a modern and dynamic way in new trendy bathroom tile ranges,” says Kyle.

“An example of this is the rising popularity of the hexagonal tiles used for wall and floor coverings - it is proving to be a very popular design combination with multiple variations that can interpreted in many ways.”

5. Water efficiency rules

Water has always been a very precious commodity, but it is becoming a very high priority, especially in light of the severe water shortages we have been living through of late.

Kyle says awareness of water shortages has made choosing sanitaryware that is water efficient a must.

“You use more water in the bathroom than every other room in your home combined. Choosing water-efficient options is the right thing to do, and it can save thousands of litres and lots of money in the long run,” he says.

image“Matte, nude and neutral colours offer the perfect combination when paired with darker greys and blacks, and offer a great way of introducing some contrast to the overall colour palette,” says Kyle.

“Water-efficient taps, double-flush cisterns, and low-flow showerheads all make a big impact on reducing your water consumption in the bathroom. However, there are other really clever and innovative products - one of them being the exclusive ROCA W+W, which reuses the water from the basin to fill the cistern after filtering it, further reducing water consumption by up to 25%.”

6. Smart storage

Adequate storage is essential in any bathroom space, and today, it takes on the role of being both functional and visually pleasing.

“Bathroom storage needs to provide you with easy access to all your items - it prevents the items from getting lost inside the furniture unit. ROCA’s range of bathroom furniture, for example, boasts drawers with full extraction systems that display all their contents so that you may access even the farthest corner,” says Kyle.

“Some models also include a concealed drawer to facilitate the tidiness of?the smaller objects.

However, he says that modern bathroom furniture has also become smart.

ROCAs Statum-N Base Unit, for example, allows you to connect your smartphone to the Bluetooth speakers of the furniture unit and enjoy your music while you shower or get ready to go out. It also offers a built-in socket in its drawer so that you can use to plug your hairdryer, electric shaver, or straightening iron in.”

image“Combinations of pastel tonalities in blue, green, salmon and ash are also on the rise, but only when used as accent tones," says Kyle.

7. Deluxe showers

The bath has always taken centre stage in bathroom design, however, there is a trend to replace the bath with a super-luxurious and grand shower instead.

“Showering is water efficient, it is quick and easy, and it provides one of the few occasions in which we are relaxed, calm and away from the stress caused by our everyday lifestyle,” says Kyle.

“It is no wonder that it is really starting to take centre stage in modern bathroom design. From the shower walls, shower heads and faucets, you can customise your shower according to your budget and needs.

He says another important element to consider is the shower floor or tray.

“Gone are the days when acrylic shower floors were your only option, as ROCA now also provides shower trays in STONEX, steel and vitreous china. Shower trays manufactured in STONEX, a resistant and long-lasting material, may be installed levelled to the floor, and thanks to their textured surface, offer a high anti-slip feature,” says Kyle.

“They are also available?in different natural finishes to meet the needs of all kinds of bathroom environments, providing a very modern look - Helios, wooden texture, Terran, stone texture.”

imageAdequate storage is essential in any bathroom space, and today, it takes on the role of being both functional and visually pleasing, says Kyle.

Kyle says steel shower trays are functional, long lasting and extra slim so that they are perfectly integrated in the shower space, and it is only necessary to clean them with a wet cloth and soap.

“For greater comfort, ROCA’s In-Floor or Blues XL collections include an anti-slip base,” says Kyle.

“If you are searching for an economic shower tray that is easy to clean and resistant to chemical agents, those manufactured in vitreous china - such as ROCA’s Malta shower tray for example - are a good option.”

All ROCA products are currently available at Bathroom Bizarre outlets countrywide.

Rock & Roll Haven

The White Dove Rockotel, Woodstock

Published: 06/06/2016

Insider's Tip: Book any suite for two or more midweek nights and receive a 12 percent discount (Friday/Saturday and holidays excluded).

It appears like a tie-dyed mirage on Tinker Street, a funky Victorian painted in gradations of purple, magenta, pink, and red. Opened in October 2014 and continuing to evolve, this Woodstock business is owned by Brooklyn transplants Erin Cadigan, a fashion designer/illustrator, and Martin Mills, a real estate project manager.

The rock music theme was a no-brainer: “Martin and I met while following the band Phish, and I had also followed the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia was alive. Both of us were heavily involved in music, including music of the ’60s and ’70s, our whole lives,” says Cadigan. “This project was very DIY.”

That’s for sure. Using details from album covers and other authentic sources, Cadigan personally designed the draperies and wallpaper in the suites. Each pays tribute to an artist, era, or event — but there’s nothing kitschy about it. “The idea was what it would have looked like if an artist lived there,” she says. “Experience,” a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, is bathed in shades of purple and includes mod furniture and baroque details. “Heart,” the Janis Joplin quarters, is all pinks and oranges, with a six-foot home theater screen. “Station,” a loft-like space with a sweet tie-dyed sofa, honors the Grateful Dead. The theme for “Garden” is the Woodstock festival itself. Around the corner and down a country lane, the ’70s-inspired “Rocket Room” has a cabin-in-the-woods feel, and Queen-themed “Bohemian Rhapsody” dazzles with a gold metallic bathroom. “We wanted to do something special in each bath,” says Cadigan. Some have rainfall shower heads, while others feature clawfoot slipper tubs.

Each room is stocked with a record player and vintage vinyl to enhance the vibe (or you can plug into a retro-look radio/MP3 speaker). Some suites have surround sound so you can really crank the volume. Stay tuned for more details, as the couple looks to expand.

Eat: Guests can preorder meat and vegetarian breakfast sandwich delivery from Provisions in town, as well as snack trays from Cheese Louise. Rick’s Wood-Fired is just a few doors down and makes a mean mushroom pizza. Borrow one of the inn’s free bikes and head to the Village Green, where vegan Garden Café offers lunch and dinner. They have a zippy new juice bar and a pretty patio for enjoying summer breezes. Patrons line up at Shindig, also in town, for homemade cinnamon buns and donuts at breakfast and at Bread Alone for lunch fare like burgers on brioche buns.

Do: You can simply hang out in the guests’ courtyard and stoke up the firepit. Or embark on an adventure: Take the trail from the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery to Overlook Mountain for a gorgeous view of the Hudson and surrounding Catskills. You can also poke around the ruins of an old hotel. Visitors love the local watering holes, and the inn provides towels to take along; Millstream, Big Deep, and Little Deep are favorites (Cadigan is putting together a map of them). On the weekends, Mower’s Flea Market — one block away from the Village Green — is a fun outing: vintage goods but also funky new clothes and a farmer’s market all wrapped into one.

Take a morning yoga or Pilates class at Euphoria Yoga. And in the evening, Upstate Films, practically next door, always has something interesting on the screen.
