Just like fashion and everything else in life, décor also has emerging trends. Gone are the days of dingy shower cubicles and minute shower heads - today the modern shower is earning its rightful place in the most stylish bathrooms. Kate van Niekerk, marketing manager of Tile Africa, shares her expertise to help you bring your outdated shower in line with the latest trends and designs. 

 

What are the latest shower trends?

Square, frameless showers are the latest trend, with clear glass to show off the tiles and mosaics. No more grimy shower curtains to be embarrassed about. The modern glass shower enclosure reflects natural and artificial light and creates a sense of space and openness. “It is now super fashionable to showcase the whole package and not just the shower door,” says Kate.

A new range of shower roses and hand-held showers reduces water consumption without affecting the water pressure and amount of water delivered. A water flow regulator maintains a predefined, constant flow rate regardless of the line pressure. The regulator reacts to water pressure changes and adjusts to decrease the amount of water passing through, while the flow-rate remains the same.

 

Pressure variations are compensated for and water consumption can be reduced from 30 to 10 liters per minute.

What is the latest look when it comes to showerheads?

Showerheads, previously available as small shower roses, now come in larger sizes, making this contemporary water spout a standout feature in the shower.“With the invention of water-saving shower heads, consumers can now spoil themselves with larger shower heads, as the size doesn’t influence the amount of water being delivered,” she says.    

What has inspired these shower trends?

Modern bathroomware is developed with the scarcity of natural resources in mind. The latest products with green credentials are designed to make it easier for consumers to conserve the environment.

 

The contemporary bathroom has become less of a personal area and more of an experience of luxury and relaxation. “The whole package of modern tiles, mosaics and listelli encourages us to be more daring with clear versus frosted glass showers,” says Kate.

How can tiles be used to create a unique look for the shower?

A mosaic feature wall or column in the shower will grab attention. Shimmering glass, smooth metal or textured natural stone mosaics are a great way to create a focal point and draw the eye towards the shower.Borders add interesting texture to walls and the creative possibilities are endless. Wide or narrow, horizontal or vertical, borders can be created with beautiful listelli, tiles cut into different sizes or colourful mosaics.Textured tiles and pebble mosaics are perfect for the shower floor to make it less slippery.

 

What are the shower options for a small bathroom?

Most of us will admit to dreaming of a larger bathroom, but it is luxury that many modern homes lack. Fortunately, with adequate planning, even the smallest bathroom can be transformed to accommodate a shower and a bath.Though space may be limited, it is possible to fit a shower in a small en-suite or a guest bathroom by choosing a space-saving layout.

If you prefer a shower, rather than a shower-bath combination, you may want to consider a curved corner or pentagon shower cubicle. “This is a miracle space-saver as it cuts away a corner and therefore frees up space,” says Kate.

Where it is impossible to fit in a separate shower, an all-in-one bath and shower combination is the answer. A shower bath consists of a stylish bath that features shower fittings and a glass enclosure, so that you have the choice between enjoying a bath or a shower.

What are the considerations when planning a shower that will be used by children?

If the bath and shower have tiled edges, make sure these edges are finished off with a round border. Shower corners can be a hazard, so check that they are finished off smoothly, with no sharp edges protruding.Extremely hot water is another danger to consider. Turn down the temperature of the geyser fitted for this particular bathroom. Medicine and cleaning products should be safely stored in a childproof cupboard. 

 

What accessories are available for showers?

A shower caddy is a handy accessory as it keeps all items, such as shampoo and shower gel for example, neatly together and within easy reach. A shaving or cosmetic mirror on a concertina wall stand is a practical option in the shower as it can expand and twist to achieve the right angle. Make sure that accessories are made from stainless steel so that they don’t rust in the humid and wet conditions.Additional storage space can be created by fitting glass shelves and a towel rod next to the shower. “Keep accessories simple as a bathroom can easily look cluttered,” she says. – Antonella Desi

Let’s start with the deck. This area features a teak-laid transom platform, cockpit deck, flybridge, flybridge stairway, side decks and foredeck walkthrough, twin self-stowing 80kg/176lbs and 50kg/110lbs Delta anchors with 100m of chain each, and twin electric anchor winches with foredeck and three station controls.

Now let’s move to the cockpit, an area with comfortable U-shaped seating, a teak folding table, a transom gate leading to the bathing platform with electro- hydraulic raise/lower mechanism, a foldaway swimming ladder and a hot and cold shower.

In this space, we can also find a door leading to the crew quarters and engine room from the side, the deck, the life raft storage, and a 4.4m telescopic passerelle with folding remote control.

Next is the Wheelhouse where we find the Helm position with powered raise/lower console, repeat navigation equipment including radar/chartplotter and engine instrumentation, the Helm seat with electric adjustment, and an electric opening helmsman’s window and door to side deck. To keep your company comfortable, this space also includes U-shaped seating with a table to port.

Also, full engine instrumentation including fuel gauges, engine controls and rudder position indicator with navigation system including color radar, GPS and chartplotter, VHF/RT, speed and distance log, echo sounder with alarm, autopilot and high speed magnetic compass can be found. To make sure you’re safe while cruising it has controls for windscreen wipers, bilge pump, anchor winch and trim tabs with indicator, a chart table and remote control searchlight.

It also includes a CCTV linked display in the lower helm, intercom to flybridge and all cabins, a 24v and 240v control panel and a toughened glass screen (clear for night vision).

Next to the Wheelhouse we find the Flybridge. There is the U-shaped seating area and teak table with removable center section, a twin forward L-shaped seating and sun pad with storage below (with built-in spa bath as an option), an MP3 radio with waterproof speakers and a wet bar, including sink with electric barbecue and top loading cooler box.

Let’s discuss the Deck Saloon now, with its L-shaped seating area with two armchairs, two-seater sofa and coffee table with an entertainment center incorporating a 50” HD LED TV on electric raise/lower mechanism and DVD, radio/MP3 system with surround sound system; also a sideboard unit with bottle and glass storage, refrigerator and icemaker, a nice and comfortable dining area for 8 people with sideboard units to port, and option of sliding doors combined with balcony on starboard side.

The Galley features a 4-zone ceramic hob standard, a microwave/conventional oven combination with grill and twin stainless-steel sinks with mixer tap. It also includes a large refrigerator with deep freeze drawers, a dishwasher, and access door to side deck.

The Lower Accommodation Lobby has a full height storage cupboard with the option of fitting an additional washer and dryer and under-floor storage.

Let’s move to the Cabin’s area. The Owner’s Stateroom features a large double bed with drawers below, a dressing area with wardrobes, hanging and drawer storage and a dressing table with chair.

There is a table with seats fore and aft (for occasions), a built-in safe, a refrigerator, a 46” LED TV and DVD, radio/MP3 system with surround sound, and an en-suite bathroom with heated towel rail and bidet. You have the option to replace this cabin with two en-suite staterooms when choosing the five-cabin option.

The Forward Stateroom features a large double bed with drawers below, a comfortable walk-in wardrobe with shelves, dressing table with stool, a 32” LED TV, stereo radio/MP3, and an en-suite bathroom with heated towel rail.

The Port Guest Cabin includes two single beds with drawers below (with the option of powered conversion to double), a wardrobe with shelves, and an en-suite bathroom with heated towel rail.

Now let’s explore the Starboard Guest Cabin, which features a large double bed with drawers below, a wardrobe with shelves, dressing table with stool, a46” LED TV, stereo radio/MP3, and also an en suite bathroom with heated towel rail.

All cabins feature opening portholes and 220/240v power points, all mattresses are pocket sprung. The bathrooms also feature opening portholes and full shower stalls, electric quiet flush toilets, extractor fan and 240v shaver points

This amazing model also includes comfortable crew quarters; this space is divided between the Captain’s Cabin and the Crew Cabin. The Captain’s cabin features a double berth, desk, wardrobe and storage lockers. The Crew cabin on the other hand, includes two single berths, wardrobe and storage lockers. This area includes a bathroom with separate stall shower, an electric quiet flush toilet and wash basin. There is the crew mess area with microwave oven, sink, refrigerator and washing machine with separate dryer.

For the furniture, you can choose between Serotina Cherry and Light Oak with satin or high gloss finish. American Walnut or Rovere Oak are also available as options. All the worktops and tiled floors in all bathrooms are made of granite or marble (your choice!), the same with the galley worktop and timber-laid floor. This Princess 88 is powered by two Twin MTU 12V 2000 M93 (2 x 1,822mhp), or you can choose alternative power with one of these options: a Twin Caterpillar C32 A (2 x 1,825mhp) or a Twin Caterpillar C32 A (2 x 1,925mhp).

Its power and drive systems features a 5-bladed propellers in nickel aluminum bronze, a bow thruster (240kgf/529lbf), power-assisted electro-hydraulic steering system with hydraulic back-up, an electronic engine and gear shift control systems, and dripless shaft seals.

Its fuel system includes twin fuel tanks (in NS8 marine grade alloy) with interconnection system giving a 2,420 gal/2,907 US gal/11,000l capacity and fuel fillers on port and starboard side decks with high capacity fuel filters or water traps. Also remote fuel cocks in the cockpit locker.

It also features a 213,000Btu chilled water system with outlets in all accommodation areas and incorporating reverse cycle heating with linked windscreen de-mist system. This air conditioning system is suitable for tropical conditions (40°C).

It has a L.O.A. of 88ft 0in (26.82m) a beam of 20ft 9in (6.3m) and a draft of 5ft 10in (1.78m). Its fuel capacity is 2,420 gal/2,907 US gal/11,000l and its water capacity is 330 gal/396 US gal/1,500l.

Over the past two years, I have begun weeding out more and more of my expensive and toxic household cleaners and replacing them with homemade substitutes that work as well, or even better.  You’ve all probably seen my homemade laundry detergent recipe (20.4¢ for homemade vs. $12-$14 retail) and I’ve recently added a homemade “shout” laundry stain remover recipe (now tested successfully on both colors and whites, by the way.)  Even our liquid hand soap has been replaced by my homemade foaming soap version.  Why would I go to the time and trouble of making these products at home?  Cold hard cash!  They can all be made for pennies on the dollar, when compared to what you are spending to buy them at the store.  Plus, they don’t actually take that long to make — some only a few minutes!

Beyond that, homemade cleaners, made with natural products, are better for the environment and exponentially better for your family’s safety and health.  The chemicals and ingredients (and their fumes) in typical household cleaners can be terribly dangerous and many build up in our systems over decades of use.  Even liquid hand soap, many shower gels, lotions, face soaps and dish soaps, sadly, even many toothpastes, now contain the “antibacterial” ingredient, triclosan.   In my opinion, you wouldn’t need to read more than one or two articles about this pesticide, before you would refuse to expose your home and family to it, but that’s a post for another day.  🙂 With homemade cleaners, you can be confident you are providing the safest and most economical options for your family because you know exactly what you’ve put in them.  It makes sense for your health, your budget and the environment.

I needed to make a quick Walmart run to restock a few ingredients to make my favorite DIY cleaning products.  The most critical need was for vinegar.  I was completely out.  You are welcome to check out my whole shopping trip in this Google+ album.

My local grocery store offers a great variety of vinegars for all my cooking needs, plus the white vinegar I like to use in my homemade cleaning supplies.

One of the most commonly used ingredients in making your own household cleaners and even personal care products is vinegar.  Raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar has some incredible health benefits, that we can discuss at another time, but today, I want to talk about white vinegar.  White vinegar is readily available and very inexpensive, usually around $2.50 a gallon, in our area.  I was excited to see that Heinz is marketing a cleaning strength white vinegar, now, with a slightly higher acidity (6% as opposed to 5%) than standard white vinegars.  This little boost in acidity, adds extra oomph and effectiveness to my homemade cleaning products without a noticeable increase in cost.  Score!

Only $2.98 for a whole gallon. That will make tons of “just for pennies” cleaning supplies!

If you haven’t cleaned with vinegar, before, you’re missing out on a very effective multi-purpose cleaner or cleaning ingredient.  For those just getting started with natural cleaning supplies, the biggest objection to vinegar is usually that they are afraid their home will smell like vinegar.  Honestly, you don’t notice the smell unless you are using it straight, and even then, that vinegar fragrance dissipates pretty quickly.  But, you can try this great tip I found over at Frugal Freebies for scenting your vinegar and then you won’t have to worry about it at all!

There are literally hundreds of uses for vinegar, some pretty well known, others may be new to you. For instance, did you know that not only is vinegar good for taking the itch out of bug bites, if you put it in a spray bottle and spritz it on your skin, the smell will go away in a few minutes, but you will be protected from bug bites for the rest of the evening?  Nothing could smell worse or be worse for you than the commercial bug repellents being sold, now.  I’m so excited to try this, next summer!   Along the same vein, pouring vinegar around the outside of your kids’ backyard pool will keep flies and pests away and if you do the same around the children’s sandbox, not only will it repel bugs, but it will keep neighborhood cats from using it as a litterbox.  I hate that!  This is such a good idea.

Of course, vinegar is one of the most commonly used natural cleaners for glass, mirrors and windows.  My problem has always been that I still ended up with streaks when using it straight.  Then I read Andrea’s post, over at Simple Organized Living.  Her glass cleaner still utilizes the acidity of vinegar for super cleaning and degreasing, but with the addition of a couple other ingredients, leaves glass sparkling and streak-free!  

Window & Glass Cleaner

Ingredients

• 2 c. water
• ¼ cup vinegar
• ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
• 1 Tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

1. 
2. Mix all ingredients by pouring them into a spray bottle, replacing the lid and then shaking. You definitely need to shake this, again, before each use, because the cornstarch will settle to the bottom, but you will have sparkling clean, streak-free windows for pennies!
3. Here's my mirror before cleaning with my homemade window cleaner. I had no idea how hard it is to take a picture of a mirror and have the schmutz actually show up, but it's there -- all the smudges and spots there in the center.
   
4. And here's the after, with fingerprints, smudges and spots cleared away and the mirror completely streak-free!

Did you know that using a cotton ball to blot vinegar on cold sores will help dry them up?  Mix one part vinegar with 10 parts water and apply it in the same way, to help clear up acne.  Apparently, even warts can be treated by dotting a small drop of vinegar onto the pad of a bandage and then applying directly to the wart.  Replace the bandage each evening, for 7 days, and the wart should be gone.

When it comes to cleaning your house, there are even more practical uses for vinegar:

1. Use in the laundry to soften clothes and reduce static cling.  Just pour it into the fabric softener dispenser in your machine.  The vinegar smell has never been in our clean clothes, afterward.
2. I use white vinegar to clean the tub of my washing machine, by adding vinegar to the fill line in my soap dispenser and then running the cleaning cycle.
3. Vinegar is food safe, so there are many ways to use it in the kitchen, like cleaning the inside walls, shelves and drawers of your refrigerator.  You can also use a solution of 1 part vinegar, to 1 part water, to safely clean the residue from fruits and vegetables.
4. Use white vinegar in your dishwasher, in place of Jet Dry, to eliminate water spots and help rinse away soap residue.
5. Use vinegar as one of the ingredients to make your own bathroom cleaners.  These are my two most favorite recipes for cleaners that disinfect and clean like crazy in the bathroom.  Love them!

All-Purpose Kitchen and Bathroom Spray Cleaner

Ingredients

• 1 teaspoon Borax
• 1 teaspoon finely grated Fels Naptha
• 2 cups boiling water
• 2 tablespoons white vinegar
• 1 teaspoon castile soap
• 18 drops lavender essential oil
• 5 drops tea tree oil

I found this next recipe over at Cajun Joie De Vivre  and it is definitely a keeper!  I have changed very little, but the recipe below is how I make it.  I use it for tough lime, soap scum build up and other stains in the bathroom; and I actually use it on my kitchen sink, too!  It works better than any commercial bathroom cleanser I have ever tried and its so inexpensive to make, requiring only small amounts of ingredients that I always have on hand, because I use them in many other cleaning supply recipes, as well.  This is another staple, that will make cleaning your bathroom so much easier!

Tub and Shower Scrub

Ingredients

• 1 cup baking soda
• ⅓ cup white vinegar
• ½ cup Castile soap
• ¼ cup washing soda
• 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
• 1 Tablespoon salt
• 10 drops Germ Fighter essential oil
  

Instructions

1. Mix baking soda, salt and washing soda.
   
2. Stir in the vinegar and allow it to foam up and then settle back down.
3. Add coconut oil, castile soap and essential oils.
   
4. Mix until all ingredients are combined. The mixture will be moist, but crumbly. Pack into a container with a tight-fitting lid.
   
5. To use, spritz the affected area with the spray bathroom cleaner, from the recipe above, or with water. Let it set for a couple of minutes and then sprinkle a small amount of this scrub on a damp cloth to clean built-up soap scum, hard water or lime deposits and other tough stains.
6. The power of this inexpensive, all-natural cleaner is evident in the picture, below. The left side has already been scrubbed and the right is about to be. When I first discovered this formula, the author wrote that I would be scrubbing off build-up that previous cleaners left behind and I didn't even know was there, until I started scrubbing with this one. She understated the issue!

For the purposes of economical, ecologically sound and effective DIY household cleaners, white vinegar will be a must in your cleaning arsenal.  I think Heinz Cleaning Vinegar provides the best value and cleaning power for the money spent and it will be a staple under my kitchen cabinet.
