Read article : 10 Contemporary Bathrooms With Freestanding Bath Mixers

Hey top dreamers! We all dream for contemporary and unique dream house and all of us have some ideas of how each room might look. Some people are more into modern designs, while others like native elements. For today, I have an amazing collection of 10 contemporary bathrooms with freestanding bath mixers that will take your breath away and will leave you speechless for a moment.

The freestanding bath mixers are very desirable and popular in current years and they are considered as a base of the modern day bathroom. Despite their amazing functionality and versatility, they will give an effect of antique style to your bathroom too. If you want a freestanding bath mixer, there are two options that you can consider when renovating your bathroom:

1. Make the bath mixer a special focal point of your bathroom by setting the mixer at odd angles. If you want your bathroom to be unique, you should definitely neglect the rectangular shapes. And that’s because every single other home has. Another interesting way to make your the bath mixer stand out in your bathroom is to place it inside a glass enclosure. What do you think?

2. You can develop a spa with a freestanding bath mixer in the center of your bathroom. This is one spectacular way to turn your bathroom in a perfect gateway for relaxation.

If you are interested for placing a bath mixer in your bathroom you should definitely see the freestanding bath mixers at abl.

Check out these amazing 10 ideas that I have selected for you in the gallery below and inspire yourself! Give your bathroom a contemporary look. Enjoy and have fun!

More Freestanding Bath Shapes and Sizes Suitable for Smaller Bathrooms Available at JT Spas

Read article : More Freestanding Bath Shapes and Sizes Suitable for Smaller Bathrooms Available at JT Spas
JT Spas, a leading supplier of bathroom products in the UK, introduces a more varied range of shapes and sizes for its freestanding bath selection – ideal for the smaller bathrooms of today.

JT Spas understands that not all bathrooms have unlimited space – in fact, most bathrooms in the UK today are small and compact, allowing only for a limited number of bathroom elements. But people who are thinking of replacing their bath with a freestanding bath are concerned about the availability of space; this bathroom product supplier has just the solution: smaller, more compact freestanding baths.

The selection of freestanding baths available at JT Spas is more varied than ever. There are still many of the traditional freestanding baths on offer, with sizes ranging from 1700mm by 750mm by 600mm and 1770mm by 730mm, but there are other, smaller freestanding baths available as well.

These smaller and more compact freestanding baths are ideally suited to smaller, more compact bathrooms. One example is the Royce Morgan Kensington Small Freestanding Luxury Double Ended Roll Top Bath, which is only 1495mm by 785mm by 610mm. Another small and compact freestanding bath is the Royce Morgan Woburn Small Freestanding Bath in a modern, contemporary design, and it measures a mere 1490mm by 790mm by 590mm. There is also the Charlotte Edwards Belgravia Contemporary Small Freestanding Bath, with measurements of only 1500mm by 730mm by 590mm.

There are also smaller freestanding baths which can be installed against a wall, such as the Premier Campion Luxury Back to Wall Freestanding bath, complete with feet, which is only 1700mm by 745mm.

JT Spas says more about its freestanding bath collection: “Though a common item of the past, these elegant baths are gaining popularity again in this modern age. Their unique design and function make (them) a good candidate as an additional feature in any bathroom. JT Spas are proud to provide a diverse range of products that are created with a certain flair for quality and elegance that does not come at a hefty price, all sourced from leading manufacturers such as Moods, Phoenix and Royce Morgan, to name only a few.”

For those with small bathrooms, getting the freestanding bath of their dreams is not an issue at all. JT Spas has a wide array of baths that are more than suitable for any bathroom size.

The latest dining chairs

Save money on your bathroom renovation with these tips and advice from industry experts. Includes advice on design, planning and choosing your materials.

Scroll down to read more or jump to a topic from the list below…

‘Keep your existing layout and consider functionality’

Nick Rowland, product manager at Heritage Bathrooms says: ‘The key to a successful renovation project is planning. As soon as you start repositioning plumbing the job can become very expensive, so stick to the existing layout if possible.

‘Although installers can find great deals, do your own research as well to see what other bargains are out there. Ask yourself whether you need the installer to fit the whole bathroom. What could you do yourself? Picking up the smaller, less technical tasks, such as hanging mirrors, putting up towel rails and painting walls, can lead to considerable savings. Check whether a “good price” really is value for money – does it offer quality? Will the product stand the test of time? Is it guaranteed by the manufacturer?

‘The only area where you may want to consider cutting corners by spending less is on fittings without a working function. For example, static pieces, such as a basin and pedestal, are only required to hold water and allow it to drain away. In contrast, the WC has more moving parts and the pan and cistern need to operate properly for years to come. With this in mind, I recommend only buying a WC from a recognised manufacturer that will understand its functional needs and will carefully manage the manufacturing process to ensure that the cistern and pan do not leak.

‘A bath needs to be robust enough to hold your weight as well as the water. If you are satisfied that this basic requirement has been met then you won’t need to spend money on baths with additional reinforcement, which have little benefit for domestic use.’
?Back to top

‘Consider what you can do for yourself’

Jamey Seaman, bathroom expert at Ikea says: ‘There are many ways to make your budget go that bit further when it comes to improving your bathroom. It’s surprising just how much work you can do by yourself. Save money by purchasing ready-to-assemble basin and bathroom cabinets, and avoid paying someone else to fix units to the wall.

‘You can also make savings by buying a complete set of bathroom furniture, including a basin, cabinet and mirror, rather than individual pieces, which could cost more. You don’t have to blow your budget on bathroom storage all at once. Start by fitting storage beneath and above the sink and add more at a later date when you have the time and budget.’

‘Mix inexpensive ceramic tiles with luxury mosaics’

Beth Boulton, head of marketing at Topps Tiles says: ‘Instead of tiling an entire room in expensive mosaics, keep down costs by using them sparingly as a feature wall or to zone a shower area.

‘With the latest advancements in the ceramic printing process, there are now ceramic tiles available featuring highly realistic interpretations of natural stone, marble and wood. By cutting sheets of tiles in half or into strips to create a vertical feature behind a basin, or a horizontal statement around a bath and corner of a shower, you can make a real impact without overspending.’
?Back to top

‘Spend wisely and look out for bargains’

Rob Whitaker, brand director at Fired Earth says: ‘In general, you will get what you pay for. While cheaper products may look very similar to more expensive equivalents, they’re unlikely to have the same quality of finish or to last as long. For example, the chrome on very inexpensive taps may start to peel, or the surface of a bath may be more likely to crack or stain, so it is worth spending as much as you can afford to save money in the long term.

‘Think about installing a shower over the bath rather than building a separate shower area. As well as saving on product and installation costs, this is a good space-saving solution, too. If you would love a classic, freestanding cast-iron bath but it is beyond your budget, a bath made from a resin and stone composite is a great, cost-effective alternative. Factory shops often have fantastic bargains, so it’s well worth paying them a visit. If you can, it’s a good idea to wait for the winter and summer sales as the discounts on large items such as baths, washstands and boxes of tiles can be considerable.’

‘Think about selling your old suite’

Joe Cummings, product advisor at Better Bathrooms says: ‘The rising popularity of auction sites has provided a fantastic platform for selling secondhand items. Any unwanted fixtures in good condition are worth selling, from taps and basins to tiles. This is the perfect way to recoup some of the expense you have lavished on your new bathroom.

‘Labour costs are the greatest outlay in any renovation project, so try doing some of the work yourself. Demolition and debris removal, along with tiling and brassware installation are simple jobs even for the most novice of DIYers. There are installation videos on the Better Bathrooms website (betterbathrooms.com) offering step-by-step guidance on how to install a range of sanitaryware in your home yourself, including shower enclosures, basins and baths. This will help to eliminate high-cost construction bills. However, it’s not always a good idea to undertake all of the work a bathroom renovation entails yourself – this can end up costing you more rather than saving money. Large, technical jobs, including any changes in plumbing, will require experienced tradespeople, so shop around in order to find the right person for the task. You will need someone you trust who will do the job at the right price. Acquiring multiple quotes from different contractors will not only give you an estimate of the cost of the work, but will ensure the price is fair and help with your planning.’

‘Research affordable options for flooring’

David Snazel, buyer at Carpetright says: ‘Updating your bathroom flooring doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to lay out a huge amount of money. If you like the look of stone or hardwood floors, but want a more practical and affordable option, it’s certainly worth considering vinyl. Functional yet stylish, vinyl is waterproof, remarkably durable and comes in a variety of styles – from natural wood and classic tiles to modern patterned designs – making it the ideal bathroom flooring solution.’
?Back to top

‘Never cut corners when it comes to brassware’

Leanne Robey, senior designer at Ripples says: ‘There are lots of ways to save on a bathroom project, but you should always invest in quality brassware as this includes the items that are in use every day, in particular concealed valves that regulate the temperature of the water in your home.

‘Always buy a good quality showerhead, especially if you prefer to take a shower than a bath, and look for “rub clean” showerheads with easy-clean nozzles that will prevent the build-up of limescale – great if you live in a hard-water area.

‘For further savings choose an eco-friendly showerhead with a sophisticated flow restrictor, various jet options and air infusion, which all work together to cut your water consumption by up to 60 per cent. This will help keep down water costs and will also cut energy bills, as less water will need to be heated.’

Curves and angles have long added interest to kitchen and bath designs. While they can sometimes make a contemporary space seem stark, the right combination can add drama and warmth.

This Oro Valley, AZ master bath is the pinnacle of such a space, with curves caressing squares and rectangles at every turn. Lori Carroll  and co-designer Alexander Burch of Lori Carroll & Associates created this 347-sq.-ft. oasis for clients who were looking for a mix of modern and casual style with a relaxing aesthetic.

The focal point showcases dual-sided wall-mount “block” lavatories, where Lacava sculptural white vessel sinks hang gracefully from blocks finished with The Tile Shop’s Metallic Glaze Porcelain tile. The sinks are paired with Puravida Single Hole Faucets from Hansgrohe, sitting just below a Jura Grey Limestone floating countertop from Arizona Tile. Open shelving is incorporated on both sides, and a suspended, dual-sided mirror serves as a room partition, with LBL Tube 2 lighting on each side.

A storage system featuring Italian White Oak Veneer cabinetry from Stone River Studios includes open shelving with baskets. Deep drawers were added to store small personal items and toiletries to reduce clutter.

Beyond the sink area, Lacava’s Ovale Freestanding Soaking Tub takes advantage of the floor-to-ceiling windows. The contemporary silhouette of Hansgrohe’s Puravida Freestanding Tub Filler complements the space.

The Imola Koshi Dark Grey rectangular tile flooring changeswhen entering the bathing area, moving up to the walls of the curvedopen shower. The Metallic Glaze Porcelain tile is continued on the walls, bordered within the wall design by Bronzeworks Beach GrassLiner. The shower delivers a spa-like experience via the Puravida Rainshower, Handshower and Bodysprays from Hansgrohe.

Completing the space are a Kohler Persuade Circ Dual Flush Toilet with Elongated Bowl, Motiv Sine Collection hardware from Ginger and Bruck Scobo Sconces.

6 clever ways to make space in a small bathroom

Read article : 6 clever ways to make space in a small bathroom

Most Popular

Use these design, layout and storage ideas to make the most of a small bathroom.

1. MAKE A PLAN

Start by making a floorplan sketch of the room, noting the length of each wall, the position of the door, which side it opens on and any windows. Then make a scale plan on squared paper, cutting out paper shapes to represent the fittings. There are also online 3D planners you can use; try Ideal Standard. Rerouting the hot and cold water supplies to where they are needed shouldn't be problematic, but the waste pipe from the WC needs a short, straight run to an outside wall to join the soil stack. If that's not possible, fitting a macerator and pump allows a small bore pipe to be used, so you have more flexibility in positioning the WC. Don't forget to allow enough clearance around bathroom fittings so you can move around easily. As a rough guide, you need 70cm in front of a WC and basin and 100cm in front of a bath.

2. CONSIDER DESIGN SOLUTIONS

There's no reason a small space can't be big on design. Be inspired by the latest wall-hung fittings, introduce luxe finishes for walls and floors, and add sparkle with chrome and glass. Choosing a statement piece of furniture or a bold basin will help create a focal point. When refitting an existing bathroom, there isn't always room to move fittings, but space-saving compact versions can make all the difference. Also consider underfloor heating instead of a radiator to free up more space. If your ideas aren't working, think outside the box and investigate whether moving a wall or window or simply changing the way a door hangs could free up space.

3. SELECT A SPACE-SAVING BATH

If you love a good soak, don't be denied this pleasure because your room is too small for a bath – there are several models at a compact 1,500mm x 700mm, while the Gem from Bathroom Heaven comes in lengths of just 1,200mm or 1,300mm. Squeezing in a roll-top bath might even be possible – some are designed with squared-off sides to fit neatly into a corner. Or consider a slipper bath; they tend to be deep but short. Rather than having a separate shower, a shower bath, which gets wider at one end to accommodate room to shower, is a good option. These L- or P-shaped baths come with bespoke screens to keep the water in and some are just 1,500mm long.

4. OPT FOR A SHOWER

Made-to-measure screens, £1,900 including fitting; HSK Renodeco shower panel in Limestone, from £295 for a 900mm x 2,550mm panel; all Frontline Bathrooms

Particularly in an extra bathroom such as a loft room or ensuite, a bath is not so necessary and a shower room will make better use of limited space. Enclosures with bi-fold, pivot or sliding doors are space solvers, as are pentangle or quadrant enclosures that nestle into a corner. Or consider a wet-room design without an enclosure, but with a fixed panel to prevent the whole room getting splashed.

5. PICK A PETITE BASIN AND LOO

Many basins and WCs are wall hung – a huge advantage in a tiny room since they don't eat into the floor space so the room appears larger. 'Short projection' basins and WCs and those designed to fit into a corner are other good solutions for space-starved rooms. Cloakroom basins and some 'quadrant' or corner basins can be tiny – good for rinsing your hands, but not ideal for washing your face without splashing. Opting for a single monobloc tap simplifies the basin design, more so if you select a handleless one that turns on and off via a sensor.

6. FIND FURNITURE TO FIT

High cabinet with two doors, £95; mirror cabinet, £50; washbasin cabinet, £115; storage bench, £40; all Silveran collection, Ikea

Fitted, modular or freestanding furniture? It's down to personal taste, though the current trend is to get everything off the floor, including cabinetry. Fitted solutions are tailored to the room for maximum space efficiency. Look out for reduced 21cm depth furniture designed for smaller rooms. Modular storage is a good halfway house, consisting of units in set sizes that you can combine for a personal look. Taking a leaf from kitchen manufacturers, bathroom designers have come up with clever drawers that fit around a basin, and deep drawers with shallower ones nestling inside. Streamline the look with push-close doors instead of handles.

Two Axor projects win three awards at the European Hotel Design Awards 2011

Read article : Two Axor projects win three awards at the European Hotel Design Awards 2011

Tuesday 22nd November marked the annual European Hotel Design Awards at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster Bridge. Held on the eve of the prestigious 2011 Sleep Event, the black tie dinner was hosted by BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine and celebrated the very best in new hotel design from across Europe.

Recognised by the judges for their creative excellence and commercial viability, two of the winning projects - The Savoy Hotel and Four Seasons, Park Lane, London, both feature showers and bathroom fittings from international bathroom brand Axor, the designer brand from Hansgrohe.

Following an ambitious £220 million restoration, the Savoy re-opened in October 2010 and won two awards ‘Interior Design of the Year’ for its lobby and public areas and one of the key accolades of the night ‘The European Hotel Design of the Year’.  A British icon since 1889, the new design successfully blends old and new while allowing English Edwardian and Art Deco interiors to shine with timeless elegance and glamour.  The Axor Montreux collection with its nostalgic, turn of the 20th century styling and modern technology was a perfect fit for the bathrooms in 215 of the hotel’s 268 guestrooms and suites.

Axor designers, Phoenix Design, combined clear, geometric shapes with pure, traditional elements such as filigree cross handles, ceramic detailing at the centre of each mixer handle and accessories such as wall lights with handmade crystal glass shades, soap dishes and towel rails.  Other unique reminiscences of the era include bridge mixer taps and a freestanding version of the bath tub mixer. All taps, shower and accessories are available with a distinctive brushed or polished nickel finish or, as chosen by the Savoy, the timeless option of polished chrome.

These latest two awards join a cavalcade of prizes to round off a successful first re-opening year including the ‘2011 Hot List’ from CondĂ© Nast Traveller and ‘Favourite UK Hotel’ at the Telegraph Travel Awards.

The Four Seasons on London’s Park Lane won the top award ‘Architecture of the Year’ for conversion of an existing hotel building. Hansgrohe supplied its design-led, superbly crafted Axor Citterio bathroom collection to all 192 luxury guest rooms, including 45 one, two and three-bedroom suites with airy views across fashionable Mayfair rooftops and the greenery of Hyde Park.

Axor Citterio was the ideal partner for the finely detailed bathrooms which feature delicate marble and brushed steel, enhanced by walnut and marble cabinetry and vanity mirrors with integrated televisions. There are over 70 individual items bearing the Axor Citterio label including a wide choice of mixers for basins, bidets and baths, as well as coordinating showers, showerpipes, bath tubs and accessories.  All are characterised by a strong geometric design with gleaming, perfectly crafted chrome surfaces and a harmonious combination of straight angular edges next to rounded curves.  Designed to perfectly blend into both modern and classic interiors, the line radiates luxury as an expression of quality, workmanship, expertise and added value.

Ben Reed, Contract Manager responsible for both the Savoy and Four Seasons hotels comments, “It has been a privilege to be involved with these tremendous hotel projects. The Savoy is steeped in history so was not only a great contract to win but crucial to get right in order to meet the exacting standards required of the hotel design team. With the Four Seasons, we worked very closely from start to finish with the client’s designers at ReardonSmith Architects, so I am delighted also to see the practice recognised and rewarded for their vision and talent with Patrick Reardon winning the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution’ ‘.

Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe AG, successfully realizes “Designer Visions for Your Bathroom". In cooperation with Axor, leading product designers, architects and interior designers develop their vision for the bathroom as a living space. The Axor collections offer a great number of unique and sustainable solutions to create personalised bathrooms of the highest aesthetic and technological levels. To date, Axor collections have been created by Philippe Starck, Antonio Citterio, Jean-Marie Massaud, Patricia Urquiola as well as Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. They all contribute towards making life in and around the bathroom a little more meaningful and beautiful. The Axor brand is headed by Philippe Grohe.

Architect Yann Chu Redesigns a Contemporary Taiwan Home

Read article : Architect Yann Chu Redesigns a Contemporary Taiwan Home

This article originally appeared in the December 2008 issue of Architectural Digest.

It began as a minor experiment," Rudy Tseng maintains, characterizing his move some four years ago from a penthouse apartment in downtown Taipei to a rental house in the suburbs. "I wanted to see if I preferred living outside the city limits—a good 40 minutes from Taipei 101," which he takes care to explain is the world's tallest skyscraper and has even been dubbed "one of the Seven New Wonders of the World." Just as soon as he was able to conclude that he did indeed like the suburbs better, he purchased a place there, in a gated community of 600 contemporary look-more-or-less-alike houses (the strict community code dictated white exterior walls and red-clay-tile roofs).

On the upside: The three-level hillside house afforded a wide-reaching view of archaic pastoral—a valley, a river and, in the distance, a mountain with a face of grand ferocity, bearing as it did a decided resemblance to a lion's head. On the downside: Though only around 20 years old, the structure was deteriorating, battered by the roaring wind and flogging rain of Taiwan's long typhoon season, and there were weeds in the disheveled garden "as high as a human."

Tseng, a former managing director of The Walt Disney Company in Taiwan and now a professor of creative management in the graduate school of a university there, tapped the Taipei-based architect and designer Yann Chu, who had worked on both his apartment and a rental house. "When I first met Yann, he was just back from apprenticing in Paris," Tseng recalls, "and he had named his Taipei studio Marais Design, after the district in the French capital that he had worked in and loved. He was young and fresh, with a lot of good ideas, especially industrial-design concepts. I'm going to go a bit out on a limb here and call him, more than a designer, a creative space reformer. Because even after a year of living in his brainchild, I am still discovering new design elements and experiencing strong aesthetic emotions."

Tseng's own tastes ran to the simple, if not the minimal. It was inescapable, given his collection of contemporary Asian art (including works by Xu Bing, Michael Lin, Li Yuan-Chia, Lin Liang-Tsai, Jien-Shiu Lien, Chieh-Jen Chen and Zhen Zhon) and YBAs (Young British Artists, including Jason Martin, Ian Davenport and David Batchelor), that he would want the space to look a little like a contemporary art gallery. "I told Yann that everything that could be white should be white," he explains. "I needed it to all be fairly open but without feeling too cold." In the end, thanks to the architect-cum-designer's dynamism, Tseng got "something not just modern but, even better, futuristic."

Chu "changed everything," Tseng says—except for the color of the exterior and the roof, "the two no-nos." Calling for the greatest ingenuity were the concept and subsequent execution of the staircases, which are different for each level. Some are freestanding, others intramural; some are solid, others "see-through" (the railing on the staircase connecting the first and second levels, for instance, is a silver stainless-steel tube encased in glass, while the railing on the staircase connecting the second and third levels is red lacquer). The back side of the open first-to-second-level staircase is accentuated with translucent light boxes.

The architect used reflective or semitransparent materials for the flooring throughout in order to create "other dimensions." To fuse the house to the landscape, he enlarged the existing floor-to-ceiling multipaneled glass doors that opened from the living room to the garden, made still other windows bigger and even added fenestration. "On the third floor, in the den, in front of where I indicated I would be wanting to sit and read," Tseng recounts, "Yann made a window expressly to frame a banana tree he'd planted in the garden right outside." Nor did the architect forget to typhoon-proof the entire house, rigorously reinforcing everything in sight.

The garden plan for all three levels of the building as it climbs the hillside was Chu's, too. On the ground floor, 30 immature Taiwanese cypress trees frame Korean grass, a couple of Japanese cherry trees and a rectangular pond that serves as a swimming pool for Tseng's four-year-old golden retriever, Hamish. The first floor, reached by outdoor stairs, encompasses the entrance hall (Tseng describes it as "a meet-and-greet area for guests") and the vast, luminous living room. The second floor consists of a dining area, a family room and a kitchen—one big open-plan space. A glass wall with a honeycomb inlay, which allows sunlight to penetrate while maintaining privacy, divides the dining area from the lushly planted side garden.

As one ascends the stairs to the master bedroom and bath, den and guest room that constitute the third floor—a double-height amalgam where the architecture achieves its fullest, most engulfing expression—David Batchelor's freestanding neon light boxes blaze into view. Yellow, orange, blue, purple and green, they proceed to bounce fantastically off the glass panels that slice through the space as well as off a structural column that Chu wrapped in stainless steel for a mirroring effect.

Beyond a monumental door yawns the cavernous master bedroom with its semitransparent walls and pyramid ceiling. The master bath is semiopen, with a concave semitransparent boundary-blurring ceiling. On its other, semitransparent side is the book-lined den, which has furniture by Eames and Saarinen. (Chu himself designed a lot of the furniture for the house, including long benches carved from indigenous cypress, sculptural-looking wood stools and assorted cabinets, plus a dining table, a low table and a sideboard.)

"You've probably heard this before, but Chinese care about feng shui," Tseng declares, pointing out a white, surfboardlike object above his bed that he explains is hiding an air-conditioning unit. "One of the things you have to be most cautious about is bed location. The trouble was there was a structural beam over where we wanted to put my bed, and you must never put your bed directly under a beam, unless you want to have bad dreams and bad luck as well. So we put the air conditioner up there and covered it with the surfboard design. You know, there are some people who even obsess about the direction of their bed, but I figured enough was enough—I didn't want to go overboard," he says with a laugh. "Although this whole house is maybe a little bit overboard."

For all that it may look on the outside like its 599 neighbors, it certainly is singular and unexpected within: Together, Yann Chu and Rudy Tseng have made it boldly go where no house in the community has gone before.
