Count on dust, noise and traffic from trades that you'll probably get to know quite well as they become part of your daily grind. Remodeling gets messy. And then there's the inconvenience of construction encroaching on your most personal space—the bathroom.
Of course, the inconvenience of renovating a bathroom depends on how many of them you have in the home. If you're overhauling your one and only, this project is one you'll want to start and finish as fast as possible. (And be sure that the tile layer doesn't leave you without a toilet over night while grout dries!) "You need to find a neighbor, stay with a family member or take a vacation," says Rick Miller of Miller's Fancy Bath in Louisville, Ky., referring mainly to households with a single bath under constructio."
There are surprises in any remodeling project, but you can prepare mentally (and physically, on site) by considering these pointers:
Dealing with dust. Sanding drywall is a dusty job, and so is cutting and removing a tub. Ripping out old tile? Expect some flying shards and, yes, more dust. "Weather permitting, we put a fan in the window and create a backdraft the bathroom to draw the dust-filled air and pump it outside," Miller describes.
Cover floors leading from the exit to your bathroom. "Make sure contractors are walking on drop clothes," Miller advises, noting that foot traffic will carry bathroom demolition dust all over the house if you're not careful.
Collect all materials. Before you dig into the project, be sure all materials are on site, from fixtures to hardware, tile—everything. Otherwise, you can plan on installation delays and scheduling challenges with various tradespeople. Just because your tile finally came in (six weeks late) doesn't mean the tile layer is available then to install it. (He had your job slated for way back when, and now he's booked.) See how this can get sticky? "Minimize the invasiveness of a [project] like this by having everything there and ready before you start," says Ellen Rady, designer/president, Ellen Rady Designs, Cleveland, Ohio. "Have all your pieces and parts laid out so when you do begin, you're not stalling."
Set up a makeshift bath. If you depend on the bathroom that's under construction for daily use (or if it's your only bath), be sure to ask the designer/builder to set up a temporary bath. This can be accomplished by setting up a temporary fiberglass shower unit in the basement that drains into the utility tub floor drain, describes Ken Perrin, president, Artistic Renovations, Cleveland, Ohio. "We can also set up a toilet in the basement," he says. "Then at least they have those two fixtures." A temporary shower/toilet setup might cost $500, "but in the long-run, it's worth it because the homeowner doesn't have to call the neighbors to use the bathroom."
Plan on delays. Despite a careful plan, detailed schedule and having all materials on site, you can bet on a remodeling project running longer than you expected. And if you plan on doing a lot of the project yourself, expect a learning curve. "Whatever time you think it will take, double that," says Cameron Snyder, president, Roomscapes Luxury Design Center, Boston, Mass., and past-president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). "Timing is critical in a bathroom project because you can't do A until B is done, and so on."
That said, allow leeway, because with the level of complexity involved in an all-out bathroom renovation, you must count on "surprises" along the way. So don't plan to entertain overnight guests the weekend after your bathroom project is slated for completion. Have that birthday party at a restaurant so you don't have to deal with two messes in your house.
Have fun with it. Embrace the process and take plenty of before and work-in-progress photos. Keep your eyes on the prize—that dream bathroom, the updates you've been wanting for years, the features that will clinch a higher home sale price. Remember during all this dust and through all of the delays why you are doing this.

If you're looking to spend it on your home, the typical tax refund is no great windfall.
The average refund through early April was $2,851, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Almost any remodeling job requires more than a paltry $3,700. Even adding a deck can set you back more than $13,000, according to Remodeling's online Cost Vs. Value report.
Still, that refund check could come in handy around the house. It may not get you a makeover. But it can give you a marketing edge. It can pay for modest home fixes to spruce up your property before you put it up for sale. Even if you're staying put, it can turn a loathsome eyesore into eye candy. It can help you splurge on a trend.
Here are a few ways to improve — or indulge — on even a skimpy sum.
BRING THE BLING
The market is hot, home prices are up and interest rates are still low. Thinking of making a move? "I would focus on increasing the 'bling' in the house to capture the attention of buyers," said Ryan Lundquist, a Sacramento, Calif., real estate appraiser. He reeled off some smaller-ticket examples: New light fixtures, a few ceiling fans, an updated kitchen faucet, switch plates and some fresh paint in the living room. Even a new mailbox out front. In all, you'll be giving your home a more polished presentation, said Lundquist, who writes a lively blog to educate consumers about all things related to the housing market. "In contrast, I could spend $3,700 on brand-new insulation," he said in an interview. "But focusing on what buyers can readily see instead is a better way to get higher offers." However, adding cosmetic improvements to make your home more appealing doesn't mean it will eventually appraise for more, even if it may appear that way on reality TV. "That's not how the real world works," Lundquist said.

A stroll through HD Buttercup at the SoCo Collection in Costa Mesa, Calif., revealed some items pronounced drool-worthy in House Beautiful's 2017 home design forecast. For one, you can embrace what the editors call hygge (pronounced "hoo-ga"), a trendy Danish concept that translates roughly to a cozy feeling, by purchasing one of the large, soft throws adorning sofas all over the sprawling store. A white, furry-looking one for $125 would just take a nibble out of that tax refund. That would leave plenty of money left over for furniture with nailhead accents, or something covered in what designers say is also popular these days: Benjamin Moore's 2017 color of the year, Shadow. (Yeah, we had to ask, too. It's a deep purple.) Nearby at Pirch, a kitchen and bathroom showroom, we found a sleek, oversized kitchen faucet that would eat up the whole $3,700 refund — and then some. But, as salesman Jon Brown (whose business card reads "Advisor, Lifestyle Experiences") noted, "It's a statement all by itself." The Gantry faucet, with an articulated spout (it moves a couple of different ways), goes for $3,895. We also saw a Coyote grill priced at about $2,500 with exact spots designated for beef, chicken or vegetables. In the bath section, shower heads in the shape of large water drops were grouped together. They cost $1,500 each, Brown said, and people typically like to buy them as a trio. "It's a piece of art," he said. "Plus a functional fixture."

Dean Zibas, like Lundquist, cites small fixes that can add up — especially outside your home. "In general, it is typically best to just do an overall cosmetic improvement if one is looking for the best return," said Zibas, a real estate appraiser based in San Clemente, Calif. "Put in some elbow grease. Buy some new plants at the local nursery or home improvement warehouse and spruce up the front landscaping. Most homes, I believe, can be repainted for less than $3,000, so perhaps get the house painted," he said. Install new window screens, and do minor repairs to the hardscape and planters yourself, Zibas added. And don't stop at the curb. "Carry that effort over to the side and rear yards," he said. If you think that's too much DIY, or you won't get enough of an ROI, there's always another option. You can do nothing. Sock the money away. Add it to other savings to add a room someday or go full-on solar. Over the years, tax refunds can add up. So can your home equity.

Our Liability 15.1 We warrant to you that any Product purchased from us through our site is of satisfactory quality and reasonably fit for all the purposes for which products of that kind are commonly supplied. 15.2 The provisions in clause 15.3 shall only apply if you are contracting as a business and not as a consumer. 15.3 Subject to clause 15.6: a. we shall under no circumstances whatever be liable to you, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, for any loss of profit, or any indirect or consequential loss arising under or in connection with the Contract; and b. our total liability to you in respect of all other losses arising under or in connection with the Contract, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise, shall in no circumstances exceed the price of the Products you have purchased. 15.4 If you intend to install a Product you have purchased from us through a plumber or other installer and, prior to the installation, you are aware of a defect as referred to under clause 12, or your plumber or installer should reasonably be expected to discover and therefore become aware of any such defect upon inspection, then if the planned installation proceeds we will not be responsible for any costs of reinstallation, incurred by you or your plumber or other installer, which you may subsequently claim to have been necessary as a result of the defect. 15.5 In the event of us agreeing to reimburse you for the costs of reinstallation (for instance, if we determine that the Product in question was defective when installed but such defect may not have been clearly apparent to you or your plumber or other installer) then such reimbursement is limited to your plumber or other installer's reasonable costs, which may be determined with reference to normal industry levels at the time in question. 15.6 Nothing in these terms and conditions shall limit or exclude our liability for: fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or the negligence of our employees, agents or subcontractors (as applicable);c. breach of the terms implied by section 12 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979; defective products under the Consumer Protection Act 1987; or any matter in respect of which it would be unlawful for us to exclude or restrict liability. 16. Events outside Our Control 16.1 We will not be liable or responsible for any failure to perform, or delay in performance of, any of our obligations under a Contract that is caused by events outside our reasonable control (Force Majeure Event). 16.2 A Force Majeure Event includes any act, event, non-happening, omission or accident beyond our reasonable control and includes in particular (without limitation) the following: Strikes, lock-outs or other industrial action. Civil commotion, riot, invasion, terrorist attack or threat of terrorist attack, war (whether declared or not) or threat or preparation for war. Fire, explosion, storm, flood, earthquake, subsidence, epidemic or other natural disaster. Impossibility of the use of railways, shipping, aircraft, motor transport or other means of public or private transport. Impossibility of the use of public or private telecommunications networks. The acts, decrees, legislation, regulations or restrictions of any government. Or any other event that constitutes as an act of God 16.3 Our performance under any Contract is deemed to be suspended for the period that the Force Majeure Event continues, and we will have an extension of time for performance for the duration of that period. We will use our reasonable endeavours to bring the Force Majeure Event to a close or to find a solution by which our obligations under the Contract may be performed despite the Force Majeure Event. 17. Waiver 17.1 If we fail or delay, at any time during the term of a Contract, to insist upon strict performance by you of any of your obligations this does not mean we have given up our rights and we may still require you to comply with your obligations under the Contract. 17.2 If we forgive (in writing) any particular default by you of your obligations under a Contract, that does not forgive any subsequent default by you. 18. Severability If any of these terms and conditions or any provisions of a Contract are determined by any competent authority to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable to any extent, such term, condition or provision will to that extent be severed from the remaining terms, conditions and provisions which will continue to be valid to the fullest extent permitted by law. 19. Entire Agreement 19.1 We intend to rely upon these terms and conditions and any document expressly referred to in them in relation to the subject matter of any Contract. While we accept responsibility for statements and representations made by our duly authorised agents, please make sure you ask for any variations from these terms and conditions to be confirmed in writing. 20. Our Right to Vary These Terms And Conditions 20.1 We have the right to revise and amend these terms and conditions from time to time to reflect changes in market conditions affecting our business, changes in technology, changes in payment methods, changes in relevant laws and regulatory requirements and changes in our system's capabilities. 21. Law And Jurisdiction Contracts for the purchase of Products through our site will be governed by English law. Any dispute arising from, or related to, such Contracts shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. DISCLAIMER: We strongly recommend that you do not book a tradesman until you have received our goods and checked they are in perfect condition. But Balmshot founder Wayne S. Forrey, 64, didn’t start out charging money for his creation. In fact, as a longtime city planner and consultant, he didn’t intend to become a small business owner at all.
Then he was diagnosed with cancer, and the trajectory of his life would find a new target.
GETTING BALMSHOT OFF THE GROUND
In 1983, Wayne was diagnosed with lip cancer due to sun exposure. After lip reconstruction, where surgeons at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise replaced his lip with tissue from his cheeks, the lifelong Idahoan began using lip balm every day. Because Wayne no longer had moisture glands in his bottom lip and as a red-headed avid outdoorsman, he still needed to protect his skin.
Wayne, who nearly always sports a straw hat and wears Levi’s every day, became frustrated with the mess a traditional lip balm tube would leave seeping into the pocket of his jeans.
Years passed. Then he got an idea.
While working in his garage one Saturday in the fall of 2010, he experimented with a new type of balm dispenser — a single 20-gauge shotgun shell — with a tighter-fitting cap and smooth turning base that wouldn’t get caught on fabric.
At first, Wayne made the lip balm for himself.
Then he started giving it away to family and friends. More and more of his garage was dedicated to making lip balm from an ever-increasing number of shotgun shells.
It took the love of his life, his wife of 42 years, Karen, to encourage him — and let him take the startup costs out of their life savings — to see that Balmshot could be successful commercially.
By the beginning of 2011, the Forreys were selling their product for the first time.
“The next thing I knew, we were meeting with our banker,” Wayne said. “U.S. Bank bent over backward in knots 100 times to help us with this. It was so great to walk out of the bank and say, ‘This thing can happen. We really can do this.’”
PRODUCTION TAKES OFF
The Forreys started small.
“We did research, and we found two labs: one in Utah, one in Denver,” Wayne said. “There is no FDA-approved laboratory for sunscreen in Idaho. We really wanted sunscreen in the balm because of my lip cancer. Karen sat down with the chemist there, and Karen came up with a formula. The FDA approved it, and that’s how it started.”
Each element of the lip balm is made in the United States.
They soon found out the state of California had the strictest set of standards to be able to use the official Made in USA symbol on products.
“That was a decision we made early on,” Karen said.
It’s a decision the couple takes seriously, down to the screw in the shotgun shell.
“The screw could be made in the U.S.A.” Wayne said, “But it might come from foreign steel. The state of California requires even the materials to be from the U.S. Everything in our product is from the U.S. It’s U.S.A. steel, it’s U.S.A. plastic (packaging), it’s U.S.A. oil going into the plastic.”
They worked out of their home’s garage for about a year-and-a-half with two flavors of lip balm: classic and cool mint.
In the early days, they mostly sold the product to retailers such as Bed Bath & Beyond.
“When he needed a bigger compressor, I said, ‘You need to move out of the garage,’ because it has quite a noise element,” Karen said.
Now they sell to distributors and stores large and small — from regional stores such as D&B Supply to online commerce giant Amazon. Everything is manufactured and produced from their office space at 7646 W. Lemhi St. in Boise.
Wayne has built several of his own manufacturing machines by hand — including one dubbed Octavia for the eight stages it completes in the assembly process.
The Forreys have sold Balmshot in all 50 states and Canada, and they are working to secure the documentation and patents to sell their product as far away as the United Kingdom and South Africa.
Their line of lip balm has grown to five varieties, including a new organic pomegranate flavor, as well as a mint breath spray.
Karen has other ideas for other organic flavors, and the couple said they intend to explore new product lines for insect repellent and deodorant — all in the shotgun shell packaging.
A HIGHER PURPOSE
Karen, who raised the Forreys’ four children as a stay-at-home mom, went back to school and graduated with a nursing degree from Boise State University at age 40.
The type of care Karen wanted to provide was always clear in her mind, she said.
Karen’s mom died three weeks after she was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. Her sister is a 16-year survivor of the disease, and her aunt has also faced a breast cancer diagnosis of her own.
“I wanted to focus my practice on helping women through breast cancer and increase the understanding that women can be cured when diagnosed early,” she said.
Proceeds from the sale of every Pure Pink and Pink Camo Balmshot product are donated quarterly to the institute to help uninsured women pay for mammograms and breast cancer screenings.
The Forreys became a sponsor of the Snake River Stampede’s Pink on the Dirt event this year and have donated $16,000 to the institute so far.
The donations are one aspect of their business they’re most proud of. It’s one of the things they’d encourage anyone with a dream to start their own business to go after.
“Just let your creativity carry you forward, whatever it is — art, science, technology, manufacturing,” Wayne said. “Do it.”
