The YMCA of Silicon Valley has been allowing children 7 years old and younger to join their opposite-sex parents in the locker rooms. But some users of the Palo Alto Family YMCA on Ross Road say the policy opens the door for inappropriate exposure and is disturbing to adult members.

YMCA officials decided this week to lower the age of opposite-gender use of locker rooms to kids age 6 and younger and to better delineate the spaces between adult and family changing areas, which are contiguous.

Some members said the problem is really about dedicating a separate space for family use where kids won't have to risk viewing naked men and women.

YMCA of Silicon Valley has nine locations. Only two of the newer facilities, in East Palo Alto and Mountain View at the El Camino YMCA, have dedicated family changing-room space, according to officials and members.

Elizabeth Jordan, chief operating officer of YMCA of Silicon Valley, said the opposite-sex policy accommodates parents who don't want to leave their kids alone in the same-sex locker room.

"We can't allow a 4-year-old to wander into a locker room unattended," she said. Parents also don't want to change their children on the pool deck or transport them home in wet bathing suits, she added.

At the Palo Alto YMCA, the roughly horseshoe-shaped women's and men's locker rooms have family spaces, but the small changing areas are at the back of the locker rooms and are not partitioned, officials concede. Jordan said it isn't possible to add partitions or curtains because parents need a direct line of sight of their children for safety reasons.

But retired Palo Alto police officer and YMCA member Joe Sparaco said the presence of children of the opposite sex in the locker rooms has made for some disturbing and uncomfortable encounters.

The issue came to his attention a year ago, when a 10-year-old girl came through the locker room and realized there were men in the shower.

"She was shocked. ... She had a towel and was trying to cover up, and she was crying for her dad," Sparaco recalled. "I was beside myself, and I asked to speak to the manager. This was a humiliating moment for her and for other people in the locker room."

The Y did not appear to have signs up then to let people know there was an age limit, but shortly thereafter, signage was added, he recalled. Still, some people choose to ignore it.

About five weeks ago, Sparaco emerged from the shower with a towel around his waist to find a father on a bench braiding his two daughters' hair in the adult men's section. A couple of men stood around befuddled, not knowing whether to dress or undress in front of the girls, he said.

Sparaco asked the man to take the girls out into the hallway.

"You can just shove it," the father reportedly told Sparaco, insisting that the area was the family dressing space.

Sparaco isn't alone in his concern.

"Some people are upset about it," said a man who is a member of the Palo Alto Family Y. "Some of the kids are not that small. When I go to the bathroom, at times I feel uncomfortable about that. I don't walk around without any clothes on, but some people do."

Two women said the presence of boys in the women's locker room is problematic. Parents don't always control their kids, and they run into the adult areas rather than staying in the family-changing section, they said.

Jordan said there are intercoms in the locker rooms, and members are encouraged to use them if someone is not complying with policy. When someone violates the rules, staff is trained to ask the person to move to the family side of the locker room, added Lee Pfab, executive director for the Palo Alto Family Y.

Sparaco said the opposite-sex problem is compounded by girls having to pass the men's showers to get to the pool. There is only one doorway.

Pfab acknowledged that there is a chance a child may see an adult unclothed due to the single entrance.

Sparaco would like to see a starkly different policy: no opposite-sex children in the adult locker rooms. There are already two small, private dressing rooms outside of the locker room that parents and children can use, he said.

Other YMCAs have different policies. The Marin YMCA in San Rafael has four separate locker rooms: for women, girls, boys and men, said Ron Reher of member services. The sexes are strictly separated. Parents can go into the children's locker rooms, but they must be accompanied by a child.

The Sonoma County YMCA allows children of the opposite sex under 6 years old in the men's and women's locker rooms into a curtained area reserved for families, but there is a separate, private entrance. There is also a unisex dressing area with a hallway that leads to the pool so that children don't need to pass through the opposite-sex locker room.

Having a clean bathroom is a strangely satisfying feeling. It’s not just having the towels hung up and the sink wiped free of toothpaste globs, but when you can see that sparkle on your countertops and in the tub and toilet that comes from a deep and thorough scrub.

If you feel the instant gratification from a shining bathroom as much as we do, read on for this easy guide for how to make your bathroom cleaner than ever before.

Cleaning Prep

If you have multiple bathrooms, tackling them one at a time is a good strategy because it keeps you focused on the room that you’re in. It’s also helpful to completely clear off your bathroom counter and your shower/bath shelves. Move all your toiletries to another room, so that you can keep your toothbrush away from chemical-based cleaning products. This also gives you a chance to throw away any empty bottles that are still in shower. Finally, take a look at your shower curtain liner—if it looks spotty, throw it in the washing machine on delicate to freshen it up and then hang it to dry.

Now that your bathroom is empty, gather your supplies and turn on a podcast or your favorite music. It’s time to clean!

How to Deep Clean Your Toilet

It’s best to start with the toilet so the cleaner can soak in the bowl while you clean the outside. Apply the toilet bowl cleaner inside the rim of the toilet according to the instructions on the bottle. Let it sit to clean away any residue. Close the lid and get to work on the outside.

Take a dry paper towel or rag, and wipe any dust and hair off the base of the toilet. Do the same on the top of the tank and the area between the lid and the toilet tank. Take another paper towel and spray it with the bathroom cleaner. Wipe down the outside of the toilet as many times as necessary.

Using the toilet brush, scrub the inside of the toilet, under the seat and any place there may be stubborn residue. Flush the toilet and rinse the brush. One round of toilet bowl cleaner is usually enough, but if it’s an old toilet, you may have to do two rounds. Place the toilet brush in its holder and put it away. You’re done with this part!

How to Deep Clean Your Bathroom Sink

Take the dry rag or a paper towel and wipe the bathroom counter down. This cleans off any dust, makeup streaks, or stray hairs. Then spray the bathroom sink, the faucet, and the counter with your bathroom cleaner. Let it sit according to the directions. Wipe down the counter, taking your time over any stubborn spots. Rinse the rag and then wipe the counter once more. Repeat with the faucet and the sink. Pay attention to your sink stopper, as it may need to be sprayed again with the bathroom cleaner again.

Note: If you think you have a clog, either snake your drain or use some Draino, then clean your sink.

To clean your bathroom mirror, there are two options. One is to spray the glass cleaner on a rag and then wipe down the mirror. The second is to spray the cleaner directly onto the mirror and then wipe down. Then take that paper towel and go over the faucet and handles again to take care of any streaks the bathroom cleaner left behind.

How to Deep Clean Your Bathtub and Shower

Start by spraying your shower walls with the mold and mildew cleaner, so it can work its magic while you scrub your tub. Pay attention to the corners of your shower and where the walls meet the bathtub. If you only have a shower—or if you have a shower with glass doors—let the shower cleaner sit while you enjoy a glass of water or take a quick break. Save the doors for the end, so they don’t get spotty again after you rinse your shower walls.

To clean your bathtub, spray the sides and the bottom of the tub thoroughly with the bathroom cleaner, giving extra attention to any rings that may have formed. Let the cleaner sit according to the directions on the bottle. Now take your sponge and run it under the warm water. Using the scrubbing side, scrub any stains, rings, or caked-on soap until they’re gone. It may take several attempts using the bathroom cleaner and warm water. Rinse out the sponge and use the smooth side to wash your tub a final time, making sure all residue is gone.

With your sponge, go back to your shower walls and rinse off the mold and mildew cleaner, spending time along the grout and in the corners. If your shower head is adjustable, spray it along the walls and follow with the sponge to ensure no residue remains. If you have shower doors, now is the time to clean them according to the directions. For a streak-free shine, do one pass with the shower cleaner and then follow it up with the glass cleaner.

Finish by hanging up your shower curtain and liner, replacing your toothbrush and toiletries, and giving yourself a pat on the back. You’ve just successfully deep cleaned your bathroom!

The first (and best) of the Rock Hudson-Doris Day romantic comedies, Pillow Talk has more than a few moments of genuine frothy fun. Hudson plays a Broadway composer, Day plays a interior decorator—both are successful, attractive and inexplicably single. When these Manhattan apartment dwellers are forced to share a party line their initial telephonic squabbles soon turn into flirtations.

Throughout the film, the couple is shown in split-screen: Brad (Hudson) in his apartment, Jan (Day) in hers. In this craftily constructed scene (with Hudson masquerading as a rich Texas oilman named Rex—don’t ask) the couple are able to “share” a bath—a great benefit of the movie’s widescreen format.

Some of the movie’s dialog and contrived scenarios may be eye roll-inducing—we’ll leave the various textual interpretations regarding Hudson’s sexual orientation for another time—but Pillow Talk was a huge success on many levels. The film was a box-office hit that earned several Oscar nods; rejuvenated Hudson’s career as a rom-com lead; and let Day, for too long the wholesome girl-next-door, move into more challenging roles.

Relax and Dine at The Pier First Class Lounge in Hong Kong

Prior to this, I had made a review of Cathay Pacific’s excellent new First Class lounge called ‘The Pier’ in its main hub of Hong Kong. However that lounge review was done in conjuction with the other First Class lounge ‘The Wing’. This review will concentrate on ‘The Pier’ itself as that was where I chose to spend my time for the transit. Not only is this my favourite First Class lounge in Asia, but this lounge was closer to my boarding gate for my connecting flight to Zurich. The lounge is located one floor below the main departure level, and is accessed via an escalator around gate 63/65.

Before entering the reception, there are 2 staff members who take a cursory look at your boarding pass to check eligibility, and they were able to provide keys to store your luggage. However as I wanted to shower, I needed the stuff in my hand carry. I do bring my own towel for my travels for hygiene reasons, and of course a change of clothes for the continuing journey. Then I proceeded to the reception desk which feels like checking into a luxury boutique hotel.

Past that, the lounge has a central walkway that connects the various sections of the lounge. This lounge was designed by StudioIlse, based in London with Ilse Crawford as its lead designer. The choice of materials and fixtures create a cohesive look that is impressive and yet not too flashy, giving it the feel of a restrained luxury.

My first stop in the lounge was The Retreat which has another reception counter where guests could reserve spots for the private day beds, shower rooms and a massage. Unfortunately, there was no time slot left for the next 3 hours during my layover. Given it was just a short 20 minute massage, I would not say it was something that fantastic of an offering, especially when considering Thai Airways provides an hour long for First Class passengers.

However, the shower rooms are probably one of the best inside any commercial airline lounge. Not only is it functional with luggage bench, the shower rooms have good lighting, hangers to hang your jacket and even a stool with a built-in coat hanger.

Cathay Pacific also provides premium products from Aesop which I use on a daily basis and that meant showering here felt like the one at home. While it might lack a bathtub, I do not need it for a layover shower in an airport. Thus a good rainshower with sufficient water pressure and great temperature controls was adequate and allowed me to refresh myself.

On top of the normal bath amenities like shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, the shower room has toiletries like a toner, moisturizer, hand lotion and face wash on the counter top. That allowed me to try out some products which I might not otherwise have used.

After a nice hot shower, it was time for dinner and I proceeded to the end of the lounge where there was a staff member by the entrance of the aptly named The Dining Room.

Furnished like a proper high end restaurant, there was plenty of seats since it was slightly past dinner time.

As I got seated, the host handed over the menu, for there is no buffet here. All the items are cooked on demand and complimentary for guests. I was hoping for the pork neck dish they had last time I was there but there seems to be a change in the a-la-carte menu.

Thus I had some corn soup to start, though I was apparently given the soup of the day as well. It seems they might have made a double order for me. Since the soup portion were not too big and I love soup, I finished up both portions. They were light and delicately flavoured and hits the spot when travelling. Quality of the starters was up to a bistro level you might get in cafes located in town centres, and definitely better than that of any airline lounge I have been too.

For the mains, I had the wok fried clams which seems to be a dish one can get in most Hong Kong eateries. The stir fry was surprisingly good, since it was not too oily and the addition of cashews and crunchy celery gave it a refreshing taste. As a main course, a bowl of mixed white and red rice was served and it was tastier than what I had in the First Class cabin. I think it makes sense for First Class passengers to eat first before their long haul journey so they can get to sleep immediately once onboard.

For drinks, I had something warm early on with the jasmine and lily tea that the server recommended. It was a dried flower that ‘bloomed’ when hot water was added to the pot. The taste was similar to a light floral green tea.

After the meal, I ordered ‘Ginger Forest’ which is a ginger and lime drink topped with mint and it was such a refreshing drink that I ordered another glass to bring with me to one of the day beds in The Retreat.

With still plenty of time before boarding, I chose to relax by one of the day beds and these are really great places to rest during the afternoon with light from the windows overlooking the planes on the tarmac. In fact the gates here tend to have the A380s by other carriers, since Cathay has none of these large jets. At night, the space became a bit dark even though there are several lights guests have access to.

I spent some time finishing my drink and relaxing in the space until I needed more drinks that I proceeded next to The Bar.

Inside The Retreat

The Bar is at the opposite end of The Dining Room, and features a U-shaped bar counter with plenty of comfortable lounge chairs scattered across this spacious carpeted area.

Next to it, there is ‘The Pantry’ which is a moderately sized room with a table full of snacks and pastries and a full fridge of beers, non-alcoholic soft drinks, juices and yogurt parfaits that guests can avail themselves to.

I spent the remainder of the time by the bar as I browsed through some magazines that I obtained from the well stocked shelves inside the lounge. It seems that the main reading lounge between The Dining Room and The Bar was quite packed, and this meant I was able to find some space beside the bar counters.

With plenty of sections to allow privacy for guests and great amenities, time spent inside the lounge does pass by quite quickly and it was soon time to board my flight, but the staff advised me that boarding has yet to commence. In actuality, there was a slight delay to boarding my aircraft. meaning I had more time to just stay inside the lounge. Ensconced in this beautiful surrounding, this was one delay I did not mind, and that just speaks to how comfortable this lounge is.

Reviewing Jayco’s Spacious Super C

Jayco discontinued the Seneca after the 2010 model year absence when Chevrolet discontinued the Kodiak medium-duty truck chassis. Reborn in 2012, the Seneca now features a Freightliner M2 Business Class chassis. The 2013 Seneca offers a host of upgrades and improvements and really raises the bar. While it’s available in four different floor plans, including a 37RB rear bath model and a 36FK model with fireplace and large mid-coach entertainment center, the particular floor plan we reviewed was the popular 37FS bunk bed model that can sleep up to eight people.

Construction
For 2013, the Freightliner Business Class chassis features a front leaf spring suspension and a new fully automatic air-ride rear suspension system that gives this Super C a smooth ride reminiscent of a diesel pusher Class A motorhome. A 55-degree wheel cut allows for excellent maneuverability in tight spots.

Polished aluminum rims help set off the stunning full-body paint. Our particular coach came with the Espresso exterior paint décor and was protected against stone chips by a Diamond Shield paint-protection film.

Exterior
The massive three-piece chrome bumper gives the Freightliner chassis a real “big rig” look, plus you won’t need to replace the entire unit if you damage it when parking. Chrome heated and powered mirrors are augmented with rear and automatic side view cameras, which will display on the entertainment/navigation system by selecting that option on its touchscreen. A Carefree power patio awning provides plenty of shade in your patio area, and a keyless entry pad conveniently located near the entry door controls both the cab and entry power door locks. Deep tinted flush-mounted dual-pane windows give the motorhome a clean look and minimize wind noise. The front and rear fiberglass caps have a unique molded design with no corner seams to cause any leaks. Dual slide-outs are fitted with enclosed awning toppers for protection against debris and the elements.

Living Area
Our Seneca was outfitted with the Mocha décor, which is one of three available décor packages. The wood floors and Washington Glazed Maple cabinetry with hidden hinges adds a warm look to the attractive interior and attention to detail, and the quality construction exceeds the fit and finish of some Class A motorhomes we’ve seen. The dual slide-outs in the 37FS open up the living and bedroom areas to provide plenty of floor space, and an 84-inch ceiling height ensures that you won’t be bumping your head. The soft-touch vinyl ceiling contains recessed halogen lighting throughout and a network of adjustable ceiling vents duct air from the dual 15,000 BTU air conditioners with heat pumps.

The large front cap area sports a queen-size bed with a 32-inch LCD TV mounted on a powered swivel mechanism on the passenger side of that area. A rocker switch effortlessly allows the TV to swing out for whole-coach viewing or remain flat against the wall for bunk-area viewing or when not in use. A removable ladder affords easy access to the overhead bunk, and curtains can be used to separate that area from the rest of the motorhome. One optional feature, not included on this particular RV, replaces the overhead sleeping area with an entertainment center complete with 32-inch LCD TV and large storage cabinets to each side of the TV.

The driver-side Hide-a-Bed sofa located in the main slide-out makes into a bed for additional sleeping capacity. The Dream Dinette features a legless table that also makes into a bed by releasing a lever to effortlessly raise or lower the table. The comfortable booth seats are hinged to expose storage area beneath while a swivel recliner chair is located opposite the couch. The Flexsteel furniture features attractive UltraLeather upholstery, and seatbelts are provided at all locations, including the booth dinette.

The bathroom is equipped with a Thetford porcelain stool with foot flush and the shower is fitted with a circular enclosure with sliding frosted glass doors that prevent water from dripping on the floor when open. An overhead skylight provides warm, ambient lighting and additional height in the shower stall. The bathroom vanity also features a Corian top and a sink with an overhead medicine cabinet.

The bunk bed area is what separates this motorhome from the rest. The two stacked bunk beds are bound to be a big hit with young RVers. Each sleeping area has individual lighting, windows, and privacy curtains. A pair of optional entertainment centers is mounted in the ceiling above each bunk. Each flip-down display has an integral DVD player so that each occupant can view his or her own movie. External jacks for those all-important game consoles and headphones are provided as well as a storage pouch to place any auxiliary equipment to keep them out of the way. A cavernous drawer fitted with ball-bearing slides is located beneath the bunk beds and offers plenty of storage space for bedding or other large items.

The rear bedroom is equipped with a king bed with a comfortable pillow-top mattress. A large mirrored wardrobe complemented by a number of huge drawers in the bedroom slide-out at the foot of the bed provides tons of room for clothing. A 26-inch LCD TV is also placed there and is mounted on hinges to expose a deep storage area behind the flat screen. A large window located in the rear cap also serves as an emergency exit if needed.

Cockpit Area
The cockpit area is the typical Freightliner business class layout. The switches operating the cruise control are found on the dash. We would have preferred if they were mounted on the steering column for easier access because it was a bit inconvenient to reach. The Allison transmission’s T-handle shift lever is dash-mounted to the right of the steering column. The center dash area contains an entertainment and navigation system that uses a touchscreen to control the GPS navigation functions, radio, DVD, iPod, or rear-view camera functions. Immediately beneath this is the control panel for the Power Gear leveling jacks. A side cabinet located above the recliner contains the various controls used for the coach accessories, such as the Onan EC-30 automatic generator start module and a control panel for a Xantrex 1,800-watt true sine wave inverter that supplies power for the microwave oven and the RV’s entertainment systems. A holding tank monitoring panel and the slide-out operation switch are also placed here. Six-way power seats provide comfortable seating for both the driver and copilot. Power windows are also standard.

Basement Area and Utilities
The basement storage space on the Seneca is nothing less than amazing. Every time I opened one of the side-hinged compartment doors, a spacious compartment made of tough, leak-proof Rotocast composite material was displayed. If you are one of those RVers who never has enough room to store your cargo, you’ll be very pleased with the Seneca. Excellent compartment height and wide swinging doors made it an easy task to load or unload cargo.

A bank of four batteries is located in a forward driver-side compartment. These batteries are mounted on a slide-out tray for easy access when performing battery maintenance. The rearmost driver-side compartment houses an 8,000-watt Onan Quiet Diesel generator while a power cord reel makes quick work of rewinding the 50-amp power cord. A 10-gallon propane/electric hot water heater is located at the driver-side rear of the coach, while the 40,000 BTU propane furnace is located on the passenger side. A 56-pound chassis-mounted LP tank provides fuel for the water heater, furnace, and cooktop.

The plumbing service bay is spacious, offering plenty of room to store sewer hoses, fresh-water hoses, or a macerator pump. A whole-house water filter feeds the coach’s fresh-water system and an array of valves and controls offers access to operations such as filling the fresh-water tank, bypassing the water heater during winterizing, or operating the water pump. A paper towel holder, outside handheld shower attachment, black-tank flush attachment, and dump valves for the black and gray tanks complete that area.

Driving the Seneca
Driving the Seneca imparted more of a big-rig feeling than in your typical Class C motorhome. The aerodynamically sculptured fiberglass hood tapers down at the front, which makes it easy to judge distances. The 340-horsepower Cummins diesel brought us up to speed rapidly, and the crisp handling of this chassis made the Seneca feel quite sporty for an RV. The hydraulic brakes were adequate to bring this 21,000-pound vehicle to a stop in short order, although it does take a bit more pedal pressure than the air brakes I am used to from driving Class A diesel pushers. This is a front-engine diesel chassis, so you won’t get the quiet sound of a rear engine diesel pusher, but I didn’t find the noise to be objectionable at highway speeds.

The change to the air-ride suspension that Jayco made during the 2013 model year is a welcome improvement. The fully automatic air-ride rear suspension system provided a much smoother ride. This is a big step forward for the Seneca and will probably make for an enticing upgrade to owners of earlier models with rear leaf spring suspensions.

Events outside Our Control 16.1 We will not be liable or responsible for any failure to perform, or delay in performance of, any of our obligations under a Contract that is caused by events outside our reasonable control (Force Majeure Event). 16.2 A Force Majeure Event includes any act, event, non-happening, omission or accident beyond our reasonable control and includes in particular (without limitation) the following: Strikes, lock-outs or other industrial action. Civil commotion, riot, invasion, terrorist attack or threat of terrorist attack, war (whether declared or not) or threat or preparation for war. Fire, explosion, storm, flood, earthquake, subsidence, epidemic or other natural disaster. Impossibility of the use of railways, shipping, aircraft, motor transport or other means of public or private transport. Impossibility of the use of public or private telecommunications networks. The acts, decrees, legislation, regulations or restrictions of any government. Or any other event that constitutes as an act of God 16.3 Our performance under any Contract is deemed to be suspended for the period that the Force Majeure Event continues, and we will have an extension of time for performance for the duration of that period. We will use our reasonable endeavours to bring the Force Majeure Event to a close or to find a solution by which our obligations under the Contract may be performed despite the Force Majeure Event. 17. Waiver 17.1 If we fail or delay, at any time during the term of a Contract, to insist upon strict performance by you of any of your obligations this does not mean we have given up our rights and we may still require you to comply with your obligations under the Contract. 17.2 If we forgive (in writing) any particular default by you of your obligations under a Contract, that does not forgive any subsequent default by you. 18. Severability If any of these terms and conditions or any provisions of a Contract are determined by any competent authority to be invalid, unlawful or unenforceable to any extent, such term, condition or provision will to that extent be severed from the remaining terms, conditions and provisions which will continue to be valid to the fullest extent permitted by law. 19. Entire Agreement 19.1 We intend to rely upon these terms and conditions and any document expressly referred to in them in relation to the subject matter of any Contract. While we accept responsibility for statements and representations made by our duly authorised agents, please make sure you ask for any variations from these terms and conditions to be confirmed in writing. 20. Our Right to Vary These Terms And Conditions 20.1 We have the right to revise and amend these terms and conditions from time to time to reflect changes in market conditions affecting our business, changes in technology, changes in payment methods, changes in relevant laws and regulatory requirements and changes in our system's capabilities. 21. Law And Jurisdiction Contracts for the purchase of Products through our site will be governed by English law.
