Pocket-sized gadget repurposes plastic water bottle into a portable shower or wash station : TreeHugger

Read article : Pocket-sized gadget repurposes plastic water bottle into a portable shower or wash station : TreeHugger

Sometimes I see a product and instantly notice how incredibly useful it could be, and yet how simple the concept is, both of which makes me think, "I wish I had thought of that." This little pocket-sized gadget, which repurposes a plastic water bottle into a portable shower or wash station, is one of those.

For about 6 years, my family and I lived in a tiny house (OK, it was actually a small travel trailer, but same difference) without a shower or bath. In order to get clean, we used a portable camping shower hung from a tree, which turned us all into experts at getting clean with just a small amount of water. But the smallest solar shower we could find was a 3-gallon sized one, which was plenty large enough for several showers, but almost too big to fill up and get hot for spontaneous showers.

So when I read about the SpaTap, I was a bit envious that we never ended up inventing a similar solution for ourselves, especially when considering the wide variety of situations where a tiny portable shower or wash station could come in handy.

The SpaTap is a deceptively simple device, and it takes advantage of one of our culture's most common items, the plastic water bottle. Even if you don't buy bottled water, chances are you can pick one out of the nearest recycle bin or trash can, and put it to use washing your food, your hands, or your entire body.

To use the SpaTap, simply slip it over the neck of a standard plastic water bottle, hang it up with the strap or some cord (or hold it for someone else to use), then remove the plug from the side of it, which allows the water to flow out from the perforated shower head. The device instantly becomes a produce wash station, a handwashing station, or a shower, and could be a great addition to a car first aid kit, camping gear, an emergency preparedness kit, a diaper bag, or your sports gear bag.

"For too long plastic bottles have been going into the ocean or landfill. Lack of awareness and alternative uses of this resource continues to have dire consequences for our marine health, wildlife and pollution. Recycling is great but is only part of the answer, we can also upcycle which is the top of the list as far as environmentally friendly procedures go. Upcycling is re-purposing a waste material and turning it into something useful." - SpaTap Founder Stuart Mason

According to the SpaTap website, a single 2 liter water bottle can deliver 3 showers or 20 hand washes, with bigger bottles obviously being able to handle more showers or longer use, and is said to be virtually indestructible. Constructed of "medical grade silicone," the device is safe for use around food and for drinking, and is claimed to be made from an "anti bacterial and anti microbial material."

The bad news is, the SpaTap isn't available for purchase just yet. The good news is, the team behind this portable pocket shower is using the power of crowdfunding to launch it, with a Kickstarter campaign beginning on Monday, June 2nd. Backers of that campaign will be able to grab one for themselves with a pledge of just $18 AUD (~$17 USD), for delivery this November.

RV Plumbing Tips – Cleaning RV Faucets, Sink Drains & Shower Wands

Read article : RV Plumbing Tips – Cleaning RV Faucets, Sink Drains & Shower Wands

The effects of hard water on RV sinks, faucets and drains can be an ongoing problem for RVers. This page describes a few tips for how we remove these pesky mineral deposit buildups from our bathroom and kitchen sinks in our fifth wheel trailer and keep the water flowing smoothly in our shower wand and RV toilet rinse sprayer.

<a href=RV plumbing tips for cleaning RV faucets and drains and removing mineral deposits" width="731" height="384" class="size-full wp-image-50990" />

RV plumbing tips for removing mineral deposits and cleaning RV faucets and drains.

We like the water to flow freely in our RV vanity sink faucet, kitchen sink faucet and in the shower and RV toilet sprayer wands, however, periodically these faucets begin to spray water in weird directions because their inner workings have gotten clogged up by mineral deposits from the hard water.

In our bathroom vanity, our first step is to remove and clean the screen filter in the faucet. Sometimes the faucet tip can be unscrewed by hand, but if we’ve let it go too long, we have to use a pair of pliers to break the faucet tip free due to corrosion that makes it impossible to unscrew.

Remove <a href=RV faucet screen with pliers" width="701" height="515" class="size-full wp-image-50993" />

Remove the RV faucet screen (with pliers if it’s stuck!)

Then we unscrew the entire screen assembly from the faucet.

The faucet tip unscrews from the faucet.

Dirty <a href=RV faucet screen" width="681" height="518" class="size-full wp-image-50995" />

Ugh… the screen is pretty dirty. No wonder the water comes out funny!

This time the screen was very corroded. We remove the corrosion and mineral buildup by putting all the pieces in a bath of white vinegar for 20-30 minutes or so.

Prior to putting the pieces in the white vinegar bath, it is a good idea to make note of the order that these parts go into the faucet assembly!

Soak RV faucet parts in white vinegar

After noting how the pieces go together, soak them in white vinegar.

After the bath, the bits of corrosion can be seen in the white vinegar!

Here are all the pieces. You can see the dirt that came off in the vinegar bath!

Using an old toothbrush, we scrub each piece until it is clean.

Use toothbrush to clean <a href=RV faucet screen" width="681" height="534" class="size-full wp-image-50997" />

Use a toothbrush to get the screen totally clean.

Then we reassemble the pieces in the correct order and orientation.

To make it easier to remove the faucet tip the next time we do this job, it helps to grease the threads with a marine PTEF lubricant prior to screwing the assembly back onto the faucet.

Ta da! Now the flow will be smooth and full.

Our trailer has white plastic sinks in the bathroom and kitchen, and these sinks often develop a skanky brown ring around the sink drain. For years, we relied on Comet to clean these sinks. We sprinkled it on the entire sink, let it sit for a bit, and then scrubbed.

We recently discovered that Baking Soda is just as effective!! The fantastic thing about Baking Soda is that it is non-toxic. This is wonderful not only for our gray water holding tanks but also for the RV dump stations as well as the septic fields and municipal waste water treatment systems that are downstream from them.

It’s also really cheap!

Tips for cleaning an <a href=RV sink drain" width="751" height="394" class="size-full wp-image-51008" />

White plastic RV sinks are prone to getting ugly stains.

Dirty <a href=RV sink drain" width="701" height="511" class="size-full wp-image-51009" />

Yuck!

We simply sprinkle it on the sink and then scrub the sink with a damp Scotch-Brite scrubbing pad.

<a href=RV sink drain cleaning with baking soda" width="721" height="495" class="size-full wp-image-51010" />

Sprinkle the baking soda in the sink and scrub the stains with a damp scrubby pad.

What a great result — a wonderfully squeaky clean sink!

<a href=RV sink drain is sparkling clean" width="701" height="483" class="size-full wp-image-51011" />

Sparkling!

The drain plug also gets gummy, and we use an old toothbrush to scrub it clean with either baking soda and/or Murphy’s Oil Soap (a handy all around biodegradable cleanser).

In an RV that is used for dry camping a lot, like ours, the bathroom vanity sink drain can get really gross really quickly because in an effort to conserve fresh water not much clean water gets flushed down the drain.

This can result in foul odors in the sink drain, and it’s pretty unsightly too.

So, we do two things.

First, we scrub the inside of the bathroom sink drain with an old toothbrush. To get a longer reach down the drain, we taped our toothbrush to an old tent stake we had lying around. Anything long and narrow will work.

Toothbrush and extension rod to clean <a href=RV sink drain" width="800" height="256" class="size-full wp-image-51013" />

Tape an old toothbrush to a long stick to reach deep down the RV sink drain.

Cleaning an <a href=RV sink drain" width="721" height="481" class="size-full wp-image-51014" />

Scrub inside the sink drain.

We also scrub the sink drain plug.

Second, to keep the RV bathroom sink drain fresh smelling, we use Happy Camper Holding Tank Treatment which we’ve found is a particularly good deodorizer. We put scoop of powder in an old water bottle, fill it up with water and shake it well (the bottle gets warm as the enzymes get activated!), and then pour it down the drain.

Most of it goes into the gray water tank, but a small amount stays in the bathroom sink drain p-trap and does its magic there, killing off the offensive odors.

Use toothbrush to scrub <a href=RV sink drain plut" width="721" height="481" class="size-full wp-image-51012" />

Scrub the sink drain plug with a toothbrush.

To keep our RV shower in tip-top shape, we clean the drain there as well. The biggest problem in our RV shower drain isn’t foul odors, because the shower drain gets flushed with lots of water everyday. Instead, the challenge with the RV shower drain is accumulated hair.

In a house, it’s easy enough to use a powerful cleanser like Drano to clean out any clogs caused by hair, but we don’t want strong chemicals like that sitting in our gray wastewater holding tank. Afterall, we want the enzymes and bacteria in the Happy Camper and Unique RV Digest-It holding tank treatment products we use to thrive and go to work breaking things down!

So, we use a long spring hook (and flashlight) to pull the hair out. It just takes a few minutes and then the drain is clear.

Some RV shower stalls may have drain components that can be removed for cleaning. Ours doesn’t.

Cleaning hair from an <a href=RV shower drain" width="631" height="539" class="size-full wp-image-51015" />

Use a spring hook to pull hair out of the RV shower drain.

Periodically, the RV shower wand gets crudded up with mineral deposits just like our RV sink faucets do. Again, we rely on white vinegar to clean up the deposits clogging the spray holes in the shower nozzle.

First, we pour the white vinegar through the shower wand to let it soak from the inside.

Tips for cleaning an <a href=RV shower wand" width="681" height="712" class="size-full wp-image-51016" />

The RV shower wand can be cleaned with white vinegar.

Then we soak the shower wand’s face in a bath of white vinegar.

Tips for cleaning an <a href=RV shower wand" width="751" height="421" class="size-full wp-image-51017" />

Put the RV shower wand face down in a white vinegar bath to clean all the little holes.

If we’ve let a little too much time pass, we’ll also use a toothpick to clean out each hole in the shower head. We use bamboo toothpicks because they hold up well in water. Ordinary wooden toothpicks tend to disintegrate when they get wet. A scribe also works well.

The before-and-after difference in the flow of water through the shower wand is startling. When half of the little holes are blocked from mineral deposits and the other half have an impeded flow, the water can feel like needles on your skin. After cleaning the wand, it is more like a waterfall.

Clean each hole in an <a href=RV shower wand with a toothpick or scribe" width="681" height="516" class="size-full wp-image-51040" />

Use a toothpick or scribe to clean each hole in the shower wand.

Lots of RVers love the Oxygenics RV shower head. We don’t use it because it doesn’t work well with the low water pressure we use to conserve water since we dry camp every night, but for RVers who get water hookups a lot, these shower heads are extremely popular. Of course, in hard water areas, these shower heads will need periodic cleaning as well.

The RV toilet bowl rinsing wand is also subject to corrosion from mineral deposits, and after a while when we go to rinse the toilet bowl we find the water flow from the sprayer is restricted and funky.

<a href=RV toilet sprayer wand cleaning" width="721" height="481" class="size-full wp-image-51018" />

The RV toilet sprayer wand gets clogged with minerals too.

Again, it’s easy to unscrew the end of the toilet spay wand, put it in a white vinegar for 20-30 minutes, scrub it a bit with a toothbrush, and then put it back on the wand.

RV toilet rinse wand cleaning

Unscrew the tip of the toilet rinsing wand and soak it in white vinegar to clean the holes.

As an aside, if you have energy leftover after cleaning all your RV sinks, faucets, drains and spray nozzles, a spray bottle filled with a water and white vinegar mixture is super for washing the windows. As I wrote this, some flies got in our trailer and Mark started spraying them when they landed on the window next to him using a spray bottle filled with water and white vinegar. Besides slowing them down and killing them, he was really impressed with how clean the window was when he finished!

So, these are a few of the things we do to keep our sinks and drains flowing smoothly in our life on the road in our RV.

We hope they help you too!

6 Kid-friendly Craft Ideas To Fill Rainy Vacation Days

Read article : 6 Kid-friendly Craft Ideas To Fill Rainy Vacation Days

By: Embassy Suites by Hilton |  0 Shares     18 Reads

August 22, 2017 // Franchising.com // MCLEAN, Va. - You've picked the perfect location, booked your hotel suite, lined up attraction tickets and done everything you could to make sure your last vacation before the official end-of-summer will be a success for kids and parents alike. However, what will you do if the weather doesn't cooperate?

One of the top travel mistakes is relying on the weather forecast to dictate your plans, which is why it is essential to have a back-up plan. Unfortunately, rain is a distinct possibility in many destinations during late summer. A little creativity and planning can help parents keep kids entertained on rainy vacation days.

Simply pack a few simple craft supplies, and try these six ideas inspired by DIY mommy experts and the All Suites brands by Hilton (Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites and Home 2 Suites) for fun, kid-friendly crafts you can easily do in your hotel suite:

  1. Fun with felt finger puppets
Add several small squares of felt in multiple bright colors, glue, scissors and a variety of trimmings like sequins to your vacation packing. When it rains, break out your craft supplies and make felt finger puppets, just like Joy Cho from Oh Joy! All-suite hotels like Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites and Home 2 Suites, all by Hilton, provide plenty of work space for simple crafts. Once the project is complete, kids and parents can stage their own puppet show. The All Suites brands by Hilton not only provide plenty of room for these projects, but plenty of different "sets" to perform the show.
  2. Suite, suite spa day
When rain postpones outdoor activities, get creative like Oh Happy Day! and try some indoor enjoyment instead. Packing bathrobes, nail polish, bath bombs, scented lotions and plush flip-flops sets the stage for an in-suite spa day. Fill up the tub, add a bath bomb, soak kids' feet, and pamper them with kid-friendly manicures and pedicures.
  3. Funneling some fun
If your hotel suite comes with a fully equipped kitchen, like at Homewood Suites, take advantage to recreate a vacation food favorite as shown in another example by Oh Joy! Use the complimentary grocery shopping service available at select properties to order simple ingredients like flour, sugar and cooking oil that you'll need to whip up a batch of easy, yummy funnel cakes.
  4. Sweet and sticky
Need a spur-of-the-moment idea with supplies that are easy to find? Drop by any grocery or convenience store, grab a bag of marshmallows and a box of toothpicks. Let kids use these simple ingredients to build whatever sparks their imagination by poking the ends of the toothpicks into the marshmallows. It's a yummy, convenient alternative to carrying traditional building toys in your luggage!
  5. Unbottling their energy
Turn an empty water bottle into a treasured souvenir. Simply use a kitchen funnel to pour dry rice or sand into a plastic water bottle, and add tiny memorabilia, such as shells collected from the beach, and other vacation-related bits. Kids will have fun turning the bottle to discover what's inside - just make sure that lid is on tight!
  6. Roadmap to fun
Hotels often have colorful and helpful vacation maps of the destination. Another example by Oh Happy Day can spark inspiration to make your own map. Unfold a destination map, gather accumulated ticket stubs, brochures, admission stickers and wristbands - and tape them to their corresponding points on the map. Glue sequins or attach stickers to the remaining spots to visit when the rain stops.

Rain doesn't have to ruin your last vacation of the summer. When you stay at any All Suites brands by Hilton, you'll have all the room you need to fill rainy days with fun crafts. Visit www.hiltonbringit.com to learn more and book your suite.

Rainshow'r, Oceanside Glasstile, Gaiam, Syndecrete

Read article : Rainshow'r, Oceanside Glasstile, Gaiam, Syndecrete

Whether your bathroom serves the entire family or is your private mini-retreat center, make it a place that’s healthy for you and the environment by outfitting it with energy- and water-saving devices, nontoxic materials, and items of artisanal beauty.

1. Get creative with color using Oceanside Glasstile’s luxurious handmade tiles made from discarded recycled bottle glass. Shown are cobalt Tessera one-inch mosaic tiles, which contain up to 85 percent recycled content and come in iridescent or non-iridescent finishes. (760) 929-4000.

2. Your skin and lungs absorb the chemicals in shower droplets and steam—including chlorine, a possible carcinogen. Chlorinated water can also cause dry, itchy skin and scalp. The Rainshow’r CQ1000 Dechlorinating Shower Filter comes with a low-flow, massaging showerhead that conserves water and removes at least 90 percent of free chlorine. $45–$50; $17.50 for replacement cartridge. (800) 243-8775.

3. Who’s the fairest of them all? Faces in the mirror are doubly beautiful when framed by a Fair Trade, reclaimed-copper mirror from Susan Hebert Imports. Using discarded copper, artisans in central Mexico hand-forge works in the traditional way and receive a living wage. This 27- by 20-inch oval mirror is $340; other designs and sizes available. (503) 248-1111.

4. Clear the air of unpleasant scents and moisture that could lead to mold and mildew. The Solitaire Ultra-Silent Bath Fan from Broan contains a high-efficiency centrifugal blower, is safe for installing over tubs and showers, and is Energy Star rated, so it uses 65 percent less energy than most standard models. $212. (800) 558-1711.

5. End bathroom clutter with this over-the-door utility rack from Gaiam. The chrome-plated Bath Rack and Hamper has a shelf for toiletries, three towel rods, and an unbleached, undyed, cotton canvas hamper bag with a separate pocket for delicate items. Fits doors up to 11/2 inches thick. $39. (877) 989-6321.

6. If you’re looking for a unique tub for your bathroom, why not give an older model a second life? Check a local architectural salvage store or re-store for vintage or antique soaking or claw-foot tubs, vanity or pedestal sinks, and reusable bathroom fixtures.

7. Each home wastes thousands of gallons of water annually as people wait for the tap water to turn hot. The Taco D’Mand System delivers hot water and circulates the cool water that normally runs down the drain back to the water heater through the cold water line. The silent pump attaches easily under the sink; its heat sensor shuts off the unit when the water is hot. The 008-DM-PK model, including plumbing adapter kit (shown): $404. (401) 942-8000.

8. Conventional vanity tops are made of nonrenewable materials such as wood or stone, petroleum-based laminates, or high-embodied-energy cement. Syndecrete, however, incorporates 41 percent recycled or recovered industrial materials such as fly ash, recycled carpet fiber, metal shavings, plastic regrinds, and glass and wood chips into its concrete mixture. Natural pigments can be added; surfaces are finished with a nontoxic sealer. (310) 829-9932.

DIY Daily Shower Spray

Read article : DIY Daily Shower Spray
image

We always hated how grimy our master bathroom shower stall would get a week or so after cleaning the shower. To remedy this, we started to buy and use daily shower sprays. But I wasn’t a fan of buying the sprays because the more green brands are obviously more expensive, and the more inexpensive brands seem to have a million chemicals in them. So I decided to whip up a batch of my own cost effective DIY daily shower spray.

Just call me Martha Stewart.

Although Martha would probably tell you to put 5 halved lemons that have been soaked in vinegar and sprinkled with dried saffron on the bottom of your shower stall while you shower. Or something like that.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray" width="650" height="975" />

Instead of making a bottle at a time, I decided to whip up almost a gallon of the daily shower spray. I mean, since I had all the ingredients out, I figured I might as well make a big batch.

We use distilled water in Owen’s nursery humidifier so we always have endless plastic gallon containers, so I grabbed one out of our recycling bin and took off the label.

Homemade <a href=daily shower spray cleaner" width="650" height="975" />

Instead of shelling out more money for a spray bottle, I used our last store-bought daily shower spray bottle.

With a little Goo Gone and elbow grease, I was able to get the label residue off.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray 1" width="650" height="433" />

I use a dollar store funnel that we keep under our kitchen sink to pour the cleaner into the spray bottle.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray 2" width="650" height="433" />

Here’s what you’ll need to make the DIY daily shower spray:

7 1/2 cups water
4 1/2 cups distilled white vinegar
2 1/2 cups rubbing alcohol
5 teaspoons dish soap (I use the Target generic Dawn blue dish soap)
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon oil (optional)

Using a funnel, pour all the ingredients into a gallon container. Put on the cap and shake.

Spray the daily shower spray on your shower surfaces after showering. No rinsing or elbow grease required.

This makes about 14 1/2 cups of cleaner.

The lemon oil, which is said to have disinfecting properties, helps hide the vinegar smell. You know, so your bathroom doesn’t smell like salad dressing after spraying the cleaner in your shower.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray" width="650" height="829" />

I could’ve been a fancy blogger and made custom vinyl labels for the bottles but I don’t have time for all that so I busted out a Sharpie to label the bottle and gallon refill jug.

We’ve been using my daily shower spray for a couple weeks, and it seems to be working just as well as the store-bought sprays. Yay for not having to deep clean our shower stall as often.

How to make your own <a href=DIY daily shower spray!" width="650" height="2396" />

 Happy not-cleaning-your-shower-as-often!

30 Ways To Upgrade Your Apartment On A Budget

Read article : 30 Ways To Upgrade Your Apartment On A Budget

So you’ve just moved into your first apartment on your own (or with roommates), and you seem to be baffled by how expensive everything is! Well don’t worry, because there are ways to upgrade your apartment on a budget. Sure, you pay electricity and internet.. and water..and heat. There is some serious budgeting needed in order to live comfortably. I also understand that you want to know more than just “put baking soda in your fridge to avoid it from stinking up.” So here are 15 great ways to upgrade your apartment while on a budget! Good luck!

*This article is in collaboration with Kayla Nannariello.

1. Use Command Hooks!

The most standard tool among students! Command hooks have a universal purpose, to make life easier. I have command hooks for clothes, I have command hooks for lights, I have command hooks for my whiteboard and anything else I want to hang. they can hold a lot of weight depending on the size of hooks you get. I have hooks for my keys, my umbrella, any dangling wires and even my night light! These little life and space savers not only make it easier to find stuff, but also make your place look so much cleaner and organized…something you definitely want to see when you come back from a long day of classes. This way you will have a place to put your keys instead of throwing them around and regretting it the next morning when you’re rushing around.

2. Use the free cups and bottles you get around campus fairs (housing fair, clubs and organizations fairs, career fair.)

Don’t just use them to drink; use them as pen stands, stands to hold your dish washing brush, fill them up with change that you don’t want in your wallet. I covered my cup with three layers of paper on the top and made a slit through the center and there you have it, your college piggy bank (you’re going to need that money for laundry and err..)
The bottles particularly, can be used to store pretty much anything. One of my bottles is filled up with paper clips. The other is in the fridge so I have cold water when I need it, and another one makes for an easy lime-juice dispenser.

3. Don’t hold back, get a huge trash can.

This is by far the most convenient thing I have done for myself in the apartment. We bought a 55 gallon trash can from Walmart and now we save on trash bags all the time…and the best part? We don’t have to take it out very often. If you want to budget and you’re lazy, this is a win-win. Moreover, these giant cans have a cover, so they don’t stink up the apartment even if you decide to dump food that’s days old because, come on, let’s face it, every college student forgets to throw away old food for a long time because they actually forgot or they’re just procrastinating.

4. Keep those twist ties you get with almost anything you buy.

You know when you buy a loaf of bread or something that has wound up wire over it? And you decide to throw it away? Don’t. These things can come in handy at any time in your apartment. Leaving for summer and don’t want to let the cutlery just lie around? Use this to wind up the spoons together and store them away. Phone charger too long for where its plugged in? Wind it up a bit and hold it together with this! Tape can make it sticky, very easily. Opened a pack of Doritos and want to save it for later? Don’t leave it open, use these!

5. Use an old or cheap blanket as a window blind.

I’m not kidding, some blankets at Walmart go for less than $8, and if you are renting an apartment, it’s highly unlikely that it will come with fancy blackout curtains. Get a blanket, and use command hooks to hang it up right around your window. Put two loops at the bottom corners so you can roll it up and hook it to the hooks on the top to make a blind, there you go! Cheap and easy blackout curtains to help you sleep in after that rough Friday night.

6. Use over-the-door hooks.

You don’t want to have to deal with putting 5 command hooks up when you know you need them there, and you want something that you can load up more than just the capacity of those sticky magicians. They’re cheap and there are so many options on Amazon. There are no restrictions for these and you do not need to do any work, just stick the hooks over the door so they hold on and hang away! In any case, most rental apartments will not allow you to drill holes and screw in hooks and this is the only alternative to get hooks as strong.

7. Get LED strip lighting for your apartment.

Ever get that feeling when you don’t want any lights on but also want to be able to see and move around your room? Here’s your solution, and it’s pretty cool. These lights go for anywhere between $15-$25, and they come in lengths up to 32 feet! You simply put them across the top of your room’s walls with command hooks (of course) or if the wall is flat enough then you can even use their built-in adhesive. They have a remote, and they are LEDs, so they’re barely using any electricity. They have brightness control and color changing capabilities for when you’re throwing that Saturday night party. It’s easy, cheap and will impress any guests. They can set the mood, become an ideal everyday light and even become party strobe lights.

8. When life gives you lemons, CLEAN!

You know how after you make a glass of lemonade, you throw out the squeezed lemon…right? Wrong. This is the perfect way to save yourself from over-spraying the kitchen with Febreze. Just throw that thing into the sink disposal, run it and run warm water as you do so. Crushed lemon will release a fresh aroma, much better than using any spray since it’s acidity will clean as well. Got a dirty or stinky microwave? Grab any microwavable mid-sized bowl and fill it halfway with water, cut a lemon in half and squeeze both halves only a little into the water, not all the way. Now dump them into the water and microwave for 3 minutes. Once it’s done, your microwave will smell fresh and will be much easier to clean!

9. Use a giant bowl of water to keep your room air from being too dry.

The weather gets dry and cold in the winter, which means we all start having dry hands, and feel really dehydrated. Our apartment heaters can be the culprit in this dry air problem. A simple solution is to take a large bowl, fill it with water and simply place it in your room. This works, and it works well. It will keep the air slightly humid and especially if you’re from a less cold region, you will be saved from terrible and painful dry skin. Save your money and don’t buy those heavy and space hogging humidifiers, do this instead!

10. Use Brita filters!

If you’re the kind that likes to drink bottled or filtered water, you’d be spending at least $4 a day or more than those who drink tap water. But what if I said you could drink filtered tap water? Look no further! If you don’t already know about Brita jugs and filters, you need to know. These things have filters built into them, so it’s as easy as filling up a jug by turning on the faucet. It even reminds you when to change a filter, and no its not every week, it’s around every 4 months.

11. Buy everything in bulk.

If you’re at Walmart and you love getting orange juice for that night, it is very likely that you will come back to get more. Instead, save yourself the trouble and the money…buy a giant jug of it, or even four jugs of it. Buying bigger packs saves more than you think, and you will have to make less trips, so there’s time and energy saved too! This applies to pretty much anything from frozen food to toilet paper. I would even recommend buying the large boxes of laundry detergent/pods. You’re not going to stop doing laundry, so you might as well stock up.

Using Amazon’s ‘dash buttons’ is a pretty neat way to be lazy too. Just press the button when you’re running low and there you have it, delivered supplies to your doorstep. They even have these things for Red bull and Gatorade cases, and they don’t cost anything extra. You get a discount on your first order that matches the amount you paid to get the button so that’s pretty neat and convenient.

12. Buy Windex, a lot of it.

This magical solution we all know is much more useful than you think it is. You can use it to clean counters, tables, wall stains, floor spills and pretty much anything that your apartment life can throw at you. Simply buy a refill after your first spray bottle. Fear not, Windex can even clean your stained bathroom mirror very easily so you can look good and feel fresh every morning!

13. Buy space-savers for literally everything.

I have one for snacks, one for stationery and one for cutlery. We also have one in the living room which helps when we simply leave our stuff out. There are sizes that fit on a table to keep small items and sizes that stand alone and can even be used as a bedside table or in my case, a place to keep the bowl of water so the air doesn’t get too dry!

14. Look into Mainstays products.

They make inexpensive household items such as the space-savers I mentioned. They also make furniture, so if you’re looking for a desk in your room, a chair, a comfortable chair to watch TV in, sheets, blankets and anything else you might need, they probably have it. Remember, most of these items are the cheapest when the semester starts and the large stores are having their sales. Most of my kitchen, including plates, cooking vessels and cutlery is from Mainstays, they have great deals and it’s definitely worth it.

15. Add some Throw Pillows!

Throw pillows are a great way to spruce up your apartment without spending too much     money. They come in millions of prints, so you’ll always be able to find ones that match your personal style and the look you’re going for!

16. Use decorative baskets as opposed to plastic storage bins.

Baskets are a great alternative to plastic storage bins. They act as decor but keep your things organized just as well! There are so many cute basket options out there whether you enjoy wired baskets, canvas, or woven ones and they come in all shapes and sizes to fit into whatever space you need!

17. Wall art makes a huge difference!

Dress up any boring drab walls you have in your apartment with some wall art. The possibilites here are endless! You can even buy just the prints or download prints from sites like Etsy and add your own frame.

18. Add slipcovers to your furniture.

Do you have an old beat up couch and can’t afford to buy a new one? No worries, just buy a slipcover. Slipcovers are awesome because they come in so many different colors and designs, and you can switch them out whenever you want a new look!

19. Make your space more inviting with picture frames.

Another cheap way to spruce up your apartment is to buy cute picture frames and fill them with your favorite pictures! It’s a great way to add a personal touch to your apartment. This will make your living space feel more cozy just like the home you grew up in!

20.  A rug.

If you don’t like your flooring, area rugs are a great way to cover it up. They come in so many different sizes that you’re bound to find one that will fit your space. A good rug can do wonders for an apartment by covering up any messed up flooring and making your apartment look bigger than it actually is.

21. Set out some candles.

They’re cheap, they smell good, and they act as decor. Candles have a great way of turning any drab apartment into an inviting atmosphere!

22. Decorate with artificial succulents.

Fake succulents are great because they require no maintenance. And unlike real plants, you don’t have to worry about replacing it when it dies.

23. Your table lamps can make a statement.

Instead of buying simple lamps for your end tables, get more interesting ones. Not only will they dress up the room, but they are bound to be a conversation starter.

24. Buy simple furniture.

When buying furniture, don’t buy anything crazy. Go for things that are neutral colors and won’t go out of style and can look timeless in any setting.

25. Choose the right comforter.

Your comforter can make or a break a room, and unless you are absolutely in love with a printed comforter, I wouldn’t buy it. Instead, go for a solid color, preferably a neutral. This way you aren’t limited on how you decorate your room. The solid color also gives the room a very clean feel.

26. Opt for placemats.

Placemats are a super cheap way to make your dining room or kitchen look instantly more put together.

27. Get a shower curtain.

Shower curtains take up the most room in a bathroom, so make sure yours is something that people won’t mind looking at. Resist the crazy printed ones and instead, go for a simple print that will dress up your bathroom and make it seem brighter and bigger.

28. Add a good throw blanket into the mix.

Throw blankets are great because they give a cozy feel to the room and it’s always great to have a blanket nearby, but they also work as decoration.

29. Add some mirrors to your walls.

Mirrors are amazing because they make the room look bigger and they tend to draw in people’s attention.

30. If you ever need anything for your apartment, always look it up Amazon first.

When I was setting up my apartment, there were many things I found that I didn’t even know would help me so much! For example, many of my sockets have a switch extension, so I can turn them off while I am not using them, without unplugging them. This is especially useful for behind the bed and under the desk sockets, since unplugging requires a lot of effort and plugging it back in is even worse…you might even have to move the entire piece of furniture. Power strips, USB adapters and anything you can think off, it’s probably cheaper on Amazon.

Should you have two bins in your bathroom?

Read article : Should you have two bins in your bathroom?

Our bathrooms are filled with shampoo bottles, toilet rolls and cleaning products which could easily be put into our recycling bins when finished with.

Yet research shows our green intentions are washed away as soon as we step near a toilet.

Now a business group has come up with an idea for how to combat this problem - two bathroom bins.

The Circular Economy Taskforce, who were brought together by Prince Charles's Business in the Community environment charity, says it could boost recycling.

So should two bins really sit alongside your stack of loo roll in the bathroom?

Why should people have two bins in their bathrooms?

Image copyrightThinkstock

"It's trying to address the problem that people are less likely to recycle packaging for things we use in our bathrooms than for things we use in other rooms of the house," says Jonny Hazell, senior policy adviser for environmental think tank Green Alliance.

The Recycle Now campaign points to its statistics, which show that while 90% of packaging is recycled in our kitchens, only 50% is being recycled in the bathroom.

"Often homes have one central recycling bin located in the kitchen, so when in the shower or washing your face it can be tricky to remember to transfer it to that bin," it says.

"This is why having a recycling bin or bag in the bathroom might be useful, if there is space."

Business in the Community says two bins could make it easier to separate out the plastics that can be recycled.

"But it doesn't have to be a bin, it could be as simple as a bag on the door handle that you bring down to the kitchen every week," it added.

Where has this idea come from?

While recycling has grown from 12% to 45% in the UK over the last decade, campaigners say the bathroom is an area that needs more focus.

The Circular Economy Taskforce came up with the idea as part of its work looking at practical collaborative ways to boost recycling and re-use rates.

"The bathroom is one of the areas that has come up time and time again in the group as somewhere where both business and consumers can make a difference to help us all reduce our impact on the environment," says Business in the Community.

"Thinking about how different types of bins could boost recycling in the bathroom is just one example of a potential simple solution that could have a big impact."

Why are people failing to recycle their bathroom products?

Campaigners believes it comes down not just to where a recycling bin is located but also to confusion over what can be recycled.

Recycle Now says: "There can also be confusion about what can or can't be recycled with bathroom products.

"For example many people don't realise that bleach bottles can be easily recycled - simply make sure it's empty and put the lid back on.

"Recycling just one bleach bottle saves enough energy to power a street light for 6.5 hours, so the value quickly adds up."

Research from the University of Exeter also found that people who threw away waste in the bathroom saw it as being "dirty" and were less likely to recycle it.

Going through your bathroom bin to separate out what can and can't be recycled can seem off-putting," says Business in the Community.

It added: "There is also a lot of confusion around what can be recycled in the bathroom, for example many consumers are confused by aerosols."

How much recyclable waste comes from a bathroom?

Image copyrightThinkstock

A surprising amount. Typical products include:

Plastic shampoo, conditioner and shower gel bottles, plastic moisturiser bottles (such as for hand cream and body lotion), glass face cream pots (plus the cardboard packaging they come in), perfume and aftershave bottles, aerosols for deodorant, air freshener and shaving foam, bleach and bathroom cleaner bottles, toothpaste boxes and toilet roll tubes.

Is a lack of recycling in bathrooms a real problem?

Every little helps, is the message from environmental and recycling groups.

"In general, the less we recycle, the more water and energy we need to use to produce the materials we use in our daily lives," said Mr Hazell.

Recycle Now says recycling reduces the amount we are sending to landfill and makes use of resources already available rather than making them from scratch.

"Ultimately this means reduced levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere which contribute to climate change," it added.

"For instance it takes 75% less energy to make a plastic shampoo bottle from recycled plastic compared with using virgin materials."

Can two bins have a meaningful impact on recycling overall?

"Ensuring you recycle in the bathroom can make a big difference," says Recycle Now.

"It would save £135,000 in landfill costs if every UK household threw their next empty shampoo bottles into the recycling bin.

"On top of this, if everyone recycled one more toilet roll tube it would save enough cardboard inner tubes from landfill to go round the M25 38 times."

But what if you don't have the space for two bins?

There are other options. Hang a reusable bag on the bathroom door so you can transfer your recyclable items straight into the recycling bin. Or opt for a bin with split compartments which can be used to separate recyclable and non-recyclable items.

Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils Review

Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils

Hi Beauties,

I am a sucker for shower gels. I have dry to combination skin, and find that most bathing soaps dry out my skin, even in summers. Most bathing soap brands available in India have been tried by me; and barring a very few of them, I find most of them unsuitable. They tend to further dry out my skin; making entire body moisturisation necessary every time. I have had a good time with shower gels. Some time back, when I was abroad on a holiday, I was about to run out of my shower gel and I decided to give this one a try. The brand is Clarins (which is one of my most trusted brands); and this one has many essential oils in it. Hence the purchase; the use of the shower gel; and this particular review of the product.

How to apply:

In the bath, pour a capful of product under running water (maximum temp. 37°C/98.6°F). Spread foam all over the body and inhale deeply to benefit from the aromatic properties. In the shower, use with a sponge.

Active Ingredients:

Essential aromatic oils Natural foaming agent based on coconut,Arnica (Regenerates), Balm Mint (Calms), Big Black root (Stimulates), Gentian (Tones), Geranium Hops (Stimulates), Juniper (Anti-bacterial), Mint Rosemary (alleviates, de-stresses), Witch hazel (anti-free radical, astringent, protects).

Price:

I got it for around 15GBP during a sale for 200ml product.

My Experience with Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils:

Clarins is one of my most trusted brands. It makes many fine skin care and make-up products; which are very gentle and good for even the most sensitive skin types. The SA at the Clarins counter was gushing about this product. This product is a special Spa product; which will cleanse your skin and rejuvenate your senses. I bought this; and an Eye and Lip Makeup Remover from the counter.
The packaging is the usual clean and hygienic looking Clarins –White box with Red print packaging. All the details are written on it; as well as on an information leaflet inserted inside the box.

The bottle inside is made of plastic; with a flip cap opening and a tiny hole. The bottle is transparent; and contains a golden yellow colored shower gel. The consistency of the shower gel is just perfect; neither too thick nor too runny. The fragrance is that of the essential oils; and though I am not very fond of this herbal fragrance; I don’t mind it either. It does not remain on the skin for a long time. The shower concentrate foams quite well; and the foam may be increased by using it with a loofah or sponge. Only a very small amount of product is needed during each wash. It washes off quite well, without leaving any sticky or slimy sensation on the skin. It is quite an effective cleanser. Overall, it does provide quite a spa-like feel when used in the bath tub, leaving your tired limbs extremely soft, and lulling you into a nice sleep (Yes, I have slept off in a bath tub once while using this!!!!!).

Post-bathing, I am totally disheartened. This shower concentrate is not for me. However much I loved it in the bath tub and in the shower, but it totally dries out my skin; even worse than certain bathing soaps. I have used it during warm climates; and well as during the slighter colder days we are facing now. And the result is the same. I have to put on a good moisturiser immediately after my shower; or else my skin begins to feel dry and itchy within 5-10 minutes time. This might be a blessing for the oily skin types; especially during summers; but I would not recommend this in cold winters. As for now, the bottle is lying inside my bathroom cabinet; waiting for the summers to come full time; so that I might finish it off, using around 2-3 capfuls in my bath tub to give my body a treat. This one is not at all an essential for me; especially since I have got used to the mild and gentle, yet effective shower gels from other brands.

Pros of Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils:

• Spa bathing treat
• Sturdy packaging
• Translucent plastic bottle helps you know the quantity inside.
• Flip cap with a small hole helps to regulate the flow of the gel
• The consistency is good; neither too runny nor too thick
• Contains many essential oils in it
• The fragrance isa herbal kind (that of the essential oils); which may be liked by some people.
• Foams averagely well, especially in a nice bubble bath.
• Washes off easily
• May be liked by oily skin people; specially in summers.

Cons of Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils:

• Expensive
• Availability in India is limited
• I, personally, do not like the fragrance
• Extreme drying out of my skin within 5-10 minutes in warmer or colder climates
• Good moisturisation is essential after using it.

IMBB Rating:

3.5/5

Will I repurchase Clarins Tonic Bath and Shower Concentrate with Essential Oils?

No. I am quite satisfied with my other brand shower gels; and will stick to them in future. I would recommend this only to be used sometimes, when you are very tired; to pamper yourself and give your body a treat; with all the essential oils. But then, I would recommend this only to the oily skin people; during the extreme warm and humid months. Even then, I would advise you to try out a sample before purchasing the entire bottle.
