See you in our City of Dreams | Food and Leisure, Lifestyle Features, The Philippine Star

Read article : See you in our City of Dreams | Food and Leisure, Lifestyle Features, The Philippine Star

The City of Dreams complex, which includes the Nobu Hotel, Crown Towers and Hyatt City of Dreams Manila, is set to expand Manila’s entertainment dreamscape with a grand opening on Feb. 2.

DiCaprio.

De Niro.

Scorsese.

They all want in.

What do they want “in” on?

Lifestyle Feature ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch:

MANILA, Philippines - City of Dreams, the mega-complex of hotels, casinos and restaurants set to light up yet another area of Manila Bay with its official launch on Feb. 2.

The big question: Will Nobu owner Robert De Niro, Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese and heartthrob actor Leonardo DiCaprio actually be coming to Manila for that launch?

Charisse Chuidian, City of Dreams VP for Public Relations, tells us about a just-released local TV ad featuring the three Hollywood players capering about in a casino, with the tagline: “They all want in.” And a series of billboards outside the complex seems to hint as much. But, close to opening day, Chuidian and other City of Dreams bigwigs are keeping mum. What with Pope Francis visiting Manila this week, and final touches being completed at the 6.2-hectare City of Dreams (COD), this is probably not the time to go celebrity crazy.

Still, getting a glimpse of the three hotels making up City of Dreams — Hyatt, Nobu Hotel and Crown Towers — is enough of a glittering experience, even without the Hollywood glitz. Over a very fine lunch at Cantonese restaurant Crystal Dragon, Chuidian says that with 940 rooms available, a two-level casino open, and a bevy of excellent new restaurants (Nobu among them), City of Dreams looks to expand Manila’s entertainment dreamscape quite a bit more.

In a complex developed by Australian billionaire James Packer and Lawrence Ho (son of Macau gaming magnate Stanley Ho) through Melco Crown Enterprises, the P37-billion City of Dreams is yet another jewel in the burgeoning Entertainment City lining Manila Bay. But, while the flavor of City of Dreams is international, the staff uniforms are perhaps the most visible reflection of Filipino creativity: exquisitely designed by Rajo Laurel, Dennis Lustico and Vania Romoff.

They got gaming

The integrated casino resort — located auspiciously close to the “Fortune Egg,” the City of Dreams’ dome-shaped architectural landmark — is a gamer’s paradise, with 380 gaming tables, 1,700 slot machines and 1,700 electronic table games for both VIP high rollers and mass-market players alike.

If gaming’s not your thing, entertainment options include Dreamplay, Dreamworks Studio’s first interactive play space complete with movie mascots (you can leave kids there, if you sign a waiver; for adults, the rate is cheaper); Pangaea and Chaos, two trendy nightclubs run by the Michael Alt Marina Bay Sands group; a shopping arcade featuring luxury brands like Roberto Cavalli, Rolex and Cesare Paciotti; and eateries like the signature Red Ginger, a pan-Southeast Asian haven of comfort food offering delicious takes on beef rendangand nasi goreng, Erwin’s Gastrobar, O Kitchen, Ruby Jack’s Steakhouse & Bar, Apu Filipino Cuisine, and a Godiva Chocolate Café.

Hyatt City of dreams: all-day dining and aqua suites

Among City of Dreams’ three hotels, the Hyatt is the most affordable, with come-ons like a 24-hour buffet and Aqua Suite with shower area large enough to fit a family of four.

“You can hold meetings in there,” says Jose Badelles, Hyatt COD’s marketing communications manager, and though he’s joking, it’s actually true.

If you don’t require a room-sized shower, you can choose between a Twin or 36-sq.m. King room, which will serve as a very comfortable base from which you can access food outlets like The Café, a midnight buffet (all you can eat for P1,088) with five stations offering fresh seafood, fried and grilled items that are fired up only upon ordering.

“We have an a-la-minute concept, so you won’t see huge mounds of food but it’s all cooked fresh,” says Stijn Van Leeuwen, The Café’s food and beverage manager. “Customers can specify the doneness of their steak, for example, so there’s a very good interaction between the chefs and our customers.”

The Hyatt’s facilities include a Franck Provost salon, fitness center and outdoor pool, to which guests aren’t limited. Meaning, Hyatt guests can swim in the Nobu Hotel pool, and vice versa — a nice perk on top of everything else.

Game of crowns

Kevin Sim, chief operating officer of City of Dreams, welcomes us into the Crown Tower lobby, and we’re already seeing double. That’s because they’ve hired nine sets of twins to serve as lobby girls. “We’re different,” Sim explains, as the two ladies wearing pillbox hats gamely pose for pictures.

Double the casino space, too, as Crown offers two floors of betting options, including gaming tables, slot machines, electronic games and VIP rooms.

Crown Towers offers a unique experience for high rollers as well: the luxury of parking your helicopter at the Tower One helipad, literally checking in at the eighth floor and having a personal butler escort you directly to the casino tables. Talk about an inside straight!

Then there is that eye-popping “six-star hotel” claim. Whether such a category actually exists or not — most international hotel accrediting agencies claim it does not, though the term has been bandied around by plenty of casino complexes — the Crown Tower certainly fulfills every requirement of a topnotch five-star hotel.

The personal butlering service at Crown Towers is another thing that sets it apart. According to general manager Brett Hickey, the 80 rooms, suites and villas in Tower One are for Signature Club members only — you must be invited to stay there.

But what perks: all Tower Suites guests are assigned one of 48 personal butlers who will attend to their every need — whether it’s personal shopping, laundry requests, transportation, or getting room service from Nobu or any of the other restaurants in City of Dreams. Hickey describes a request last New Year’s Eve: a guest wanted to watch the fireworks display from the helipad level of Tower One. Not only was the wish granted, but with a bucket of chilled Champagne and canapés on standby. The butler service is as personal as you want it — and the same butler will be assigned to you, 24/7, for the duration of your stay.

Each of the rooms, suites and seven lavish villas of Tower Suites offer high-speed Internet access, JBL docking stations, flat-screen smart TVs and a gallery of luxury bathroom amenities. (Those staying in villas can choose from amenity brands such as Hermes, Acqua di Parma, L’Occitane, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chopard and Bulgari.)

With two towers and 254 rooms, the Crown has exclusive facilities as well, such as a private swimming pool (Crown guests may explore all the City of Dreams pools, but the Crown pool is restricted only to guests and members. Want to double your relaxation? Crown guests can enjoy the freeform pool with a welcome kit of Evian spritzer, smoothie and complimentary use of Christian Dior sunglasses.)

Such luxury does not come cheaply, as a three-bedroom Premier Suite at Crown Towers can run from P60,000 a night to P340,000 for the bi-level, 548-sq.m. Presidential Suite.

For your culinary needs, the Crown caters to rarefied tastes: The Tasting Room is a French haute cuisine resto where Basque chef William Mahi offers special six-course degustation and wine-pairing menus (including popular favorites like the 52-degree egg with truffle, 36-hour marinated salmon and aged Wagyu beef); across the way you will find Crystal Dragon, where Malaysian chef Bong Choi offers a heavenly dim sum trio (Four Seasons, minced duck with black pepper and minced pork spinach dumplings), stir-fried prawns with butter and crispy egg floss, and oven-baked marinated codfish with five spices.

If it’s understated, trendy & chic, it must be Nobu

One of the City of Dreams’ major coups is scoring the first Nobu Hotel in Asia, second only to the Las Vegas original.

The City of Dreams outpost continues what general manager Marlon Hirsh calls “the unique Nobu hospitality — understated, chic and trendy” being the main buzzwords that define the Nobu experience.

Inspired by boutique hotels and a Japanese bamboo motif, the lobby boasts the very first Nobu teahouse in the world, featuring hand-tied Ikaati teabags and a refined array of pastries. Plush shagreen elevators take you up to one of the 321 rooms, which induce an immediate Zen mindset with the shadow-style calligraphy on the walls (and the “o” in Nobu) signifying a free flow of energy. Other unique touches are the getaslippers and minibars, stocked with the Nobu sake and Matsuhisa wine that’s only found at 32 Nobu restaurants around the world.

Hirsh says Nobu co-owner Robert De Niro is very hands-on: “He sits on each piece of furniture and gives us his comments,” but again, no word on whether the legendary actor will be attending the grand opening.

At the Nobu restaurant, which is the largest in the world, breakfasts and other dishes on the menu have been “Nobu-fied” (or Filipinized, depending on your perspective), with Wagyu tapsilog, Sakana (Japanese fish) sisig, and paella on offer. Executive chef Zach Hillberry is the man responsible for the merry fusion, saying that these were the dishes he liked upon arrival in the Philippines, and that he included paella as a nod to our Spanish colonial history.

Of course, signature dishes such as Rock Shrimp Creamy Spicy, Toro Tartar with Caviar, and Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño are available to local diners, and “every meal at Nobu is meant to be a kaisekiexperience,” Hillberry says.

The bespoke philosophy of the hotel extends to the spa, where the signature Nobu Rakuen treatment includes yoga exercises to help client and therapist breathe together as one, followed by a relaxing massage with bamboo rollers.

No wonder the Nobu Hotel was fully booked during the holiday season, and is currently at 75 percent occupancy, with a clientele comprised of locals and Chinese from Taiwan and Mainland China. Many, it seems, are seeking that unique brand of Nobu hospitality found only in this corner of the world.

Preparing structural steel surfaces for painting, coating standards

Read article : Preparing structural steel surfaces for painting, coating standards

Mill scale, dirt, laser scale, rust, heat-treat scale, grease, and dust interfere with paint and coatings’ adhesion to structural steel and must be removed before steel members can be coated. What are structural steel fabricators doing about surface preparation, and what options are available? Surface preparation can run from simple chemical cleaning to abrasion methods such as grinding and abrasive blasting. Many fabricators’ projects come with surface specifications prescribed by The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standardsMill scale. Dirt. Laser scale. Rust. Heat-treat scale. Grease. Dust. And did we mention heavy mill scale? When these come between your structural steel and your paint or coating, bad things happen. And when the steel you fabricate holds up bridges, overpasses, buildings, and stadiums, bad things are big bad things. So what are structural steel fabricators doing about surface preparation, and what options are available? Surface preparation can run from simple chemical cleaning to abrasion methods such as grinding and abrasive blasting. How to know which methods to use? Many fabricators’ projects come with surface specifications prescribed by The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) standards (see Figure 1). The methods used are specified in the contract or project documents, according to SSPC Certification Program Manager Joe Berish, PCS, MCI, who administers the program. The primary documents are the specification and product data sheets, he said. The data sheets provide the surface preparation that the coatings manufacturer used when it tested its materials and demonstrated the performance applicable to the intended use and service life, according to Berish. “The coating systems manufacturers test for adhesion and performance. When they do that, they do it with a specified profile range. For example, if you were using a certain brand’s product on a bridge, the data sheet might tell you that it was tested in a laboratory at a 2- to 4-ml profile, and this would mean you might need 3 to 5 ml of paint. It’s going to give you the profile range, the thickness of the coating that you can apply, how much thinner you can and cannot use … whether you can put it over a pickled surface or a chemical-treated surface or an abrasive-blasted surface. It’s going to tell you all of that information.“What that means is that the coating manufacturer, in the laboratory, has taken a piece of metal that met that description and they have actually tested it and here are the test results,” Berish continued. “And to get the paint manufacturer to provide a warrantee, it has to be known that it was applied under those same conditions.” The surface preparation’s standard name indicates the method used, and all surface preparation standards use the prefix SP, he said. “For example [SSPC] SP 5, SP 6, and SP 10 are all defined as abrasive blast cleaning standards. SSPC SP 8 is the standard for pickling as a means of surface preparation. The differences in all of these standards are the cleaning methods, cleanliness levels, and surface profile. Different methods may produce a similar level of cleanliness, but each will still result in differences such as surface profile or flash rusting.”Why would a customer choose abrasive or blast cleaning over pickling or solvent cleaning—or vice versa? “The contract or specification and coating product data sheet may require a surface profile which cannot be achieved by pickling, chemical stripping, or solvent cleaning,” Berish said. “Also, the coating being applied may not be compatible with all methods of surface preparation. In addition, some choices may be made dependent on the availability of equipment that the fabricator may have.”  Cost is also a consideration, which depends on the amount of surface area to be prepared, Berish continued. “For example, if it is just a few square feet and does not require a surface profile, chemical stripping may be cost-effective; conversely, if there are several thousand square feet of surface to be prepared, pickling or abrasive blasting would be more cost-effective.”Whether or not the waste produced would need to be disposed of as hazardous has an effect on the methods used as well.“The customer will give the fabricator a build sheet, if you will,” Berish said. “’We want it to be fabricated like this: the bolts located here, with this diameter.’ It’s the same with the surface condition. Just by the material they’re going to use, they’re going to go to that material data sheet that will tell what surface standard is compatible with that material—SP 1, SP 2 or 3, SP 6 or SP 10.” Figure 1
The SSPC’s surface preparation’s standard name indicates the method used, and all surface preparation standards use the prefix SP.SSPC-SP 1: Solvent CleaningThe first line of defense is simply cleaning the structural member with acetone, a thinner, or another type of solvent. “Cleaning with a solvent and a cloth is a precursor to every other surface preparation standard out there. It’s a given,” Berish said.Cortec® Technical Service Engineer John Wulterkens said that fabricators can remove mill scale, oxides, and corrosion from the metal surface using either VpCI®-422 or VpCI-426 water-based liquids (see Figure 2). “VpCI-422 is more ‘ecofriendly’ (biodegradable); VpCI-426 is stronger and works faster. Depending on the application, the gel versions of both products can be used on vertical or overhead surfaces, or on parts that cannot be treated in a dip bath.”After the scale is removed, cleaning and neutralization should be performed with a water-based alkaline cleaner, he added. “This will leave behind a cleaner surface for painting, coating, and welding. The cleaners (and rust/oxide/scale removers) contain flash corrosion inhibitors, so after the neutralization and cleaning stage, the surface will remain flash rust-free for up to a week, depending on conditions.”SSPC 2, SSPC 3: Hand Tool, Power Tool CleaningBass Mechanical, a structural steel fabricator in Elizabethtown, Pa., has 40- by 80-foot drive-through bays that handle both medium- and large-scale structural steel fabrication. The company fabricates and welds carbon steel, aluminum, stainless, and nickel aluminum into trusses, box girders, plate girders, beams, columns, mezzanines, stairways, and railings. Before sending its products out for coating, the company performs some minimal surface prep, according to Jerry Miller, chief operations officer. “We usually go to an SSPC-SP 2 or SP 3, which requires the steel to be free of grease, moisture, contaminants, heavy mill scale, and rust.” Miller said the company uses a thinner and a power tool to remove the contaminants. Then it uses high-pressure air to blow the dirt or dust and rust away,” Miller said. Standards SP 2 and SP 3 require the use of a hand or power tool to satisfy the requirement, Berish said. “By standard, SP 2 means that the surface is clean of all oils and loosely inherent material. So SP 2 is hand cleaning with the use of hand tools—a wire brush or a scraper. The use of a chemical treatment alone cannot make it an SP 2 because you cannot remove inherent materials with chemicals alone.” SP 3 is the standard for cleaning and removing loosely inherent material using a power tool, such as a grinder (see Figure 3).SSPC-SP 6, Blast CleaningTo achieve an SSPC-SP 6 grade surface cleanliness, fabricators use a shotblast cleaning machine (see Figure 4). An SSPC-SP 6 finish is the most common for structural steel, according to Alex Berghouse, product manager for blast equipment at Peddinghaus, Bradley, Ill. “That will get all the difficult residue off the steel—mill scale, rust, dirt, and so forth.”Berghouse explained how the blast machines work: The raw structural steel enters the shotblast machine, and as the material passes through the zero point, the operation is initiated. The turbines engage when the machine senses the material’s presence. The turbines throw the shot or abrasive onto the material to clean the steel. With an adjustable brush mechanism, the machine cleans off the excess abrasive and returns it to the hopper to be recycled and used again and again. The process continues until the full piece passes through the entire turbine orientation. “The speed can vary, but it is normally set about 3 to 5 feet per minute, depending on the structural profiles that are being processed. So the steel goes in laden with rust, dirt, and scale and comes out clean and ready for the next fabrication process,” Berghouse said. “The primary application for the blast determines the number of turbines you need to achieve the proper clean surface requirements,” Berghouse said.Figure 2
At left is a metal surface with corrosion removed using VpCI®-422; at right, a metal surface before the corrosion was removed. Photos courtesy of Cortec Corp., St. Paul, Minn.“There are all different types of classifications for blast cleaning, depending not only on the postprocess, such as painting or welding, but also on which application, such as for bridge construction or building construction,” he said. Before entering the blast machine, a structural steel member must be cleaned of oil and grease, Berghouse cautioned. “If a structural member goes into the blast system with any kind of excessive moisture, oil, or liquids, a filtering problem can arise. The filter cartridges will become gummed up with contaminants and won’t filter properly.”Peddinghaus designs its filtration system with inverted, conical-type filtering units intended to keep the particles loose and allow them to flow freely into the collection system. The blast system can be a stand-alone system or it can be an integrated part of the structural steel fabrication line. This includes material handling technology for moving profiles via roller conveyor and cross transfer systems, according to Peddinghaus Chief Sales Officer Lyle Menke. “Conveying systems bring the beams into the machines, which minimizes overhead crane handling.” The operator loads the structural member onto the cross transfer, which moves it to the infeed roller conveyor that delivers it to the blast machine, he continued. After it has been cleaned, the member is rolled to an outfeed transfer which can deliver into a band sawing machine; then to a structural drilling machine; and finally (if required) into a thermal cutting machine for cutting of copes, blocks, and similar design shapes. An arc writing machine uses plasma technology to write the layout, welding, and fitting information for each beam. “The welding personnel then can locate the marking and weld identification and weld each piece to finalize the structural section.”SSPC-SP 8, P&ODave Hansen, co-owner and production manager of Hansen Steel Services, Santa Fe Springs, Calif., said that the company mostly just grinds the scale to remove it from spot areas that call for only minimal joining, such as welding a base plate. Otherwise, many of the components they fabricate undergo pickling and oiling (P&O) to chemically (acid) remove the scale before fabrication and then apply an oily rust inhibitor afterward while it’s being stored before downstream processes. “One of the concerns facing beam fabricators is that base plates must have drilled holes. When a hole is drilled, it requires cooling oil for the cut. All of that oil that has now stained the base plate needs to be cleaned free of residue before a paint primer can be applied. So not only is sanding and grinding needed for prep, but the removal of all oil.  It’s not just ‘blow and go,’ unfortunately,” Hansen said. SSPC-SP 10, Near-whiteSP 10 is an abrasive blast cleaning standard. “We call that near-white metal,” SSPC’s Berish said. “By the nature of the definition of the standard, it’s gone through abrasive blasting, would completely remove all old paint, mill scale, and rust, leaving no more than 5 percent of staining—discoloration with no volume.”The surface profile that results depends on the type of abrasive used. “Abrasives can leave anywhere from a 0.5 profile to a 5- or 6-mm profile,” Berish said. “You’ll have the best paint adhesion with that finish, because it’s run at a slower speed through the machine,” Berghouse said.“SP 10 is the standard for bridge builders, because bridges are exposed to the elements and support transportation,” Menke added. “For bridge components, special types of paint are applied in addition to the primers to avoid rust and so that when the original coat starts to peel, paint can be reapplied in the field years afterward.” How to Know If Achieved? How do fabricators know and verify that they have achieved the desired surface condition? A trained and certified inspector evaluates the surface to the standards in the contract. Visual guides and written industry standards provide the evaluation criteria, Berish said. “Without proper training, they would not be qualified to provide the evaluation with a clear understanding of the standards.”Figure 3

Greenbuild exhibitors get down to business

TORONTO — The exhibits at the annual Greenbuild Show continue to become increasingly practical and pragmatic, much like the university competition that is the Solar Decathlon in Washington that wrapped up earlier in October. There was little to see that was far outside of the mainstream.

The U.S. Green Building Council's annual Greenbuild International Conference & Expo featured four days of networking, educational sessions, green building tours, master speakers and plenary events. The 140,208 gross square meters (1.5 million-sq.ft.) of the North and South building expo floors of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre were fully sold out and comprised of 1,700 booths.

The 23,000 attendees must have been in the educational sessions because they weren’t on the show floor, making it easy for CONTRACTOR to speak with any of the exhibitors at any time. Kohler stood out with a 40-ft. x 40-ft. booth that was made of recycled barn wood. Kohler has converted all faucets from its residential lines to meet new low-lead guidelines.

Additionally, the company unveiled two advanced commercial faucets at Greenbuild that now comply with the lead regulations, the Gooseneck and the Streamlined Touchless faucets. In addition to their low lead content, the faucets boast a touchless design that uses Kohler’s proprietary Insight adaptive infrared sensor technology and runs off the industry’s first ever 30-year Hybrid Energy System. The firm also showed off its enameled cast iron products that are made from at least 80% recycled material.

Reduce, reuse and recycle was the theme for Charlotte Pipe & Foundry. The company pointed out that its cast iron pipe is made from 100% recycled material from everything from refrigerators to car engines. Charlotte’s RePVC plastic pipe has recycled material in the center with virgin material in the inner and outer skins. It is the first NSF-listed Schedule 40 pipe made with recycled materials. The company’s ReUze purple CPVC pipe is made for rainwater and graywater systems and is labeled, “Warning: Non-potable water do not drink.” ReUse meets all the same requirements as FlowGuard Gold CTS CPVC domestic water piping.

Sloan Valve showed off its Solis line of PV-power flushometers and hand-washing faucets. The company displayed a brand-new faucet line, Basys, which includes automatic shutoff, visible diagnostics, interchangeable parts, multiple power options, automatic line purge and three flow options. The crown of the Basys faucet is easily removed for access to all the internal parts. Sloan also showed off its Greenbuild-appropriate Aqus graywater system that collects water under the lav, cleans it, stores it and then uses it to flush the adjacent toilet. Aqus works with most toilets, even dual flush, and it is UPC-listed.

American Standard displayed its new Decorum FloWise high-efficiency urinal designed for luxury buildings, clubs and resorts. Decorum uses 0.5-gpf, half the amount of a standard urinal, meeting the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program requirements. Moreover, commercial specifiers can now select thirty-four pairings of commercial urinals, toilets and flush valves to make commercial specifying more efficient. In addition to streamlining the specifying function, this consolidated process helps expedite delivery and paperwork for large volume commercial projects. The company also showed its Studio dual flush toilets. These luxury performance (dubbed LXP) toilets offer users the choice between a standard 1.6-gpf for solids or 1.1-gpf for liquids, meeting WaterSense criteria for using 20% less water than standard models.

The green emphasis at Delta Faucet was that all of its residential lavatory faucets flow at 1.5-GPM at 60-PSI. A majority of Delta products are also WaterSense labeled. The WaterSense label provides consumers with assurance that bathroom faucets, such as Leland, Lahara, Addison, Dryden, and Victorian, are approximately 30% more water-efficient than their 2.2-GPM counterparts. In the commercial sector, all Delta brand lavatories have a 1.5-GPM outlet as standard, with the option of 0.5-GPM for further savings. In addition to contributing LEED credits, Delta Faucet Co. also provides electronic and manual commercial metering products for reassurance that the faucet won’t be left running.

Moen recently introduced new eco-performance retail kitchen faucets that allow users the option to switch between three water-flow settings. For everyday tasks that require constant, yet low water flow, such as washing dishes or preparing foods, homeowners can choose eco-performance standard stream or aerated spray modes. These settings provide a reduced flow rate of 1.75-GPM. For tasks that require a set amount of water, however, such as filling a pot or pitcher, they can switch to the fast-fill mode, which flows at 2.2-GPM. Moen’s Commercial Division has created Eco-Performance shower systems that are certified to meet WaterSense criteria, with flow rates as low as 1.5-GPM. Commercial shower systems combine Moen’s Eco-Performance showerheads with the Posi-Temp valve to reduce water consumption and eliminate shower shock.

ClimateMaster introduced the Tranquility Modular Water-to-Water (TMW) Series in 360 (30-ton) and 600 (50-ton) sizes. This water-to-water series offers high efficiency with advanced features and application flexibility at competitive prices. As ClimateMaster’s most adaptable EarthPure HFC410A refrigerant units, the TMW series can be used for radiant floor heating, snow/ice melt, chilled water for fan coils, hot/chilled water for make-up air, and many other types of HVAC applications. The TMW 360-600 has advanced digital controls for BAS interface, four LEDS for unit status and compressor isolation switches. Other features include front and back service access panels that allow for side-by-side installation; larger capacity, requiring fewer units per job site; staggered top water connections for ease of manifolding multiple units; and DDC controls with 11 safety protections for the refrigeration circuits.

Aquatherm displayed its Greenpipe recyclable polypropylene-random (PP-R) piping system designed for potable water applications. The pipe is joined by heat fusion. The PP-R material used in Aquatherm pipe is an abundant byproduct of petroleum processing. It also requires far less energy for initial production than other piping materials, and involves none of the environmental effects associated with mining operations.

Additionally, the pipe has a natural R-value of 1-1.5 depending on pipe size and SDR. Aquatherm Lilac, developed for graywater applications such as toilet/drain water, rainwater collection, laundry/cleaning, irrigation, and similar uses, is comparatively low priced and has a list of steadily growing code approvals (it currently meets ASTM F2389 and CSA B137.11).

McQuay International previewed the new Daikin McQuay SmartSource Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) product line during Greenbuild. The line includes the industry’s first variable-speed inverter WSHP. The new line of water source heat pumps comes in a range of sizes and options that include smart dehumidification, waterside economizers and internal electric heat. The SmartSource platform is geothermal ready with factory-mounted loop water pumps. McQuay also introduced the Daikin McQuay Rebel rooftop unit. The new unit claims energy efficiency at almost double the ASHRAE 90.1 minimum standard, while functioning as a Variable Air Volume heat pump unit down to three tons. In addition, the Daikin McQuay Rebel is the first packaged rooftop system to use variable heat pump technology with auxiliary gas heat, as well as, Daikin’s advanced variable inverter scroll compressor.

Taking the spotlight in Niagara’s Greenbuild booth this year was the Stealth Ultra-High-Efficiency Toilet, featuring 0.8-gpf technology. The Stealth was set-up for live demonstrations for Greenbuild attendees. For the shower, Niagara displayed the high-efficiency Sava Spa Showerhead and the Tri-Max Showerhead with three flow rate options. With a new line of faucet aerators, the Niagara booth showcased both kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators, including its new Versa Kitchen Aerator, Tri-Max Aerator, Lead-Free Aerator and Bathroom Sink Aerator. Niagara also introduced the Energy Saving Smart Surge Protector and the Eco-IQ Programmable 5-2 Thermostat.

Jaga, a European manufacturer of stylish panel radiators and unique fan-powered hydronic baseboard, announced that it has filled out its U.S. representation and it is available across the U.S. Jaga’s product lines include the Energy Savers low-H20 radiators and the Eye Catchers line of visually appealing heating solutions. Because of its heat exchanger technology, Jaga’s “Energy Savers” radiators require only 10% the water of traditional panel radiators, resulting in a 12% energy savings. This lowers energy bills and reduces annual CO2 emissions per dwelling by almost a ton. Jaga’s Eye Catchers heating solutions use innovative materials and production techniques to elevate the radiator from a design object to art.

Encore, a division of Component Hardware Group Inc., has introduced a hygienic, water-conscious solution for converting a standard faucet into a low-flow metering faucet. The One-Tap Metering Aerator fits most faucets with an existing aerator, enabling a speedy, hassle-free transition to a water-conserving faucet. The One-Tap Metering Aerator offers a cost-effective alternative to electronic faucets. Water flow starts with a single touch and the adjustable metering activator automatically stops the flow in two to 20 seconds. This action reduces the risk of cross-contamination and provides up to 87% water savings over conventional faucets. The One-Tap Metering Aerator comes with a tamper-proof housing, installation/adjustment key and 15/16-27 female by 55/64-27 female thread adapter to fit most standard faucets with aerators.
