Below are a few deep cleaning bathroom tips for all the forgotten areas.

Plastic Shower curtain

It’s the worst when you jump into the shower and see dirt spots on the shower curtain, it can happen if the curtain doesn’t dry properly.

HOW TO CLEAN: Wipe over the curtain bottom of your curtain with a bathroom cleaner to remove any soap scum or dirt build up.  To freshen up the shower curtain pop the curtain in the wash with 2-3 bath towels (this will help prevent the curtain from crinkling too much in the machine) along with your regular detergent.  Then hang up to dry or check the label for washing instructions as you maybe able to put it in the dryer.

The sink drain

When brushing your teeth you’ll often see beyond the drain cover in the sink and see that it’s grotty.  In a regular clean, you would usually wipe over the top of the cover but just under the drain cover is usually a big build up of dirt, yuck!

HOW TO CLEAN: Get an old toothbrush and poke it into your sink drain cover, use this to help lift up the cover. Spray inside the drain and the drain cover with your bathroom cleaner, use the old toothbrush to help remove all the dirt. Once clean place cover back on.

Smelly Toilet

Whilst we clean the toilet seat and inside the bowl in a regular weekly bathroom clean, under the seat can often be forgotten, it an be a scary place, especially if you have boys as we know their aim can be terrible.

Shower Door Tracks

When cleaning the shower this area can often be neglected, which leads to a heavy build up.

HOW TO CLEAN: As the buildup is quite hard in this area your cleaning solution needs to sit on top to soften the area so you can easily remove the grime.  Spray area as required and allow to sit for 10 minutes.  Use a toothbrush to get into the hard to reach areas, then wipe over with a cloth.

Shower Head

Shower heads are prone to build up of mineral deposits, dust, dirt etc which affects the water pressure and spurts water out in all different directions.  Cleaning the shower head in your regular bathroom cleaning routine will help prevent the build up.

I live with my mum and my dad lives about 20 minutes away and I stop at his house on a Saturday night.

I've always felt that there's something in my dad's house, something that's not from this world.

Anyway, this one weekend that I was stopping, I'd been sensing something in the house the whole time that I was there. I was trying to stay with my dad because I was worried about what was going to happen when I was alone.

I was just about to go to bed so I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth. During the week, I had been very ill with a bad virus so I sat down on the toilet seat whilst I brushed my teeth because I was still quite weak.

The light then flickered on and off twice which freaked me out. Then all these t-shirts which had been hanging on the shower curtain rail (My dad had just ironed them and had left them there until he had enough room in his wardrobe) began to move like there was a wind in the room. It then went icy cold.

I was staring at the clothing in shock and then it went back to normal as quickly as it had started. The light went back on and the clothes stopped moving.

It's fair to say I was thoroughly spooked and hardly slept a wink that night in bed. I'm sure it was some sort of spirit/ghost. How could all these things happen by themselves? How could the clothes move in a room with the door closed and no window open? How could the light switch move to turn the lights on and off? And why did the temperature in the room suddenly drop to a ridiculously cold level?

Tis the season to be jolly; so dust off those old Christmas records, don your best Christmas jumper and spruce up that old bathroom, ready for the holiday season.

Forget the ’12 Days of Christmas’: that will get you nowhere. Instead, follow the 12 Days of Bathroom Renovation: a far more practical alternative.

Day 1. Get That Paint Brush.
On the first day of Christmas let’s get drastic and paint your entire bathroom. This simple move will instantly provide a new look for your bathroom.
If you really want to get into the festive mood, aim for a healthy mixture of red and green. However, come February I think you’ll be pretty sick of this.

Day 2. Introduce Mosaic Accent Tiles.
Can’t afford to tile your entire bathroom? Then tile accents are ideal.
Quite simply, they are a strip of different tiles which travel along your wall. As you can offset an expensive tile against a cheaper one, mosaic accents are perfect for those on a budget.

Day 3. Get Some Towel Hooks.
Replacing a towel rail with towel hooks is a practical option as you’ll be able to fit many hooks where you previously had just one rail.

Day 4. Find a Vintage Ladder.
A vintage ladder will give your bathroom a boutique look: simply lean it against you wall and then use the rungs to hang your towels.

Day 5. Change Your Finials.
Providing the finishing touch to a curtain rod, finials are a vital part to your bathroom. They are available in a variety of styles and are dead-cheap.
To really get into the festive spirit, look out for some novelty Christmas finials.

Day 6. Get a Curved Curtain Rod.
A curved rod for your shower curtain will give you more space than you’d get with a straight rod, so treat yourself to more elbow room this Christmas.

Day 7. Purchase a tall mirror.
Mirrors naturally reflect light so will create the illusion of space: making small bathrooms appear larger than they are.
By choosing a long, full-length mirror you’ll also create a focal-point for your bathroom.

Day 8. Add a Rug.
Investing in a fluffy rug will give you something warm and comfy to walk across, whilst creating a homely feel at the same time: the perfect accompaniment for the holiday season.

Day 9. Change Your Taps.
Replacing old taps is a cheap way of making existing sanitary ware look brand new; it also won’t involve tricky wall plumbing so there isn’t any excuse for skipping this one.

Day 10. Update your lights.
Lighting makes a huge impact on your bathroom and should never go unlooked.
There’s lots you can do with lighting, here’s just a couple of suggestions to get you thinking:
• Recessed lighting over your shower or bath will create a relaxing, romantic atmosphere.
• Spotlights over your bathroom cabinets will transform them into a centrepiece.

Day 11. Re-consider Your Storage.
Bathroom cabinets are usually the first things to date in a bathroom so you should invest in some new ones.
To really bring your bathroom into the 21st century get an illuminated bathroom cabinet.

Day 12. Think Novelty Furniture.
On the 12th day of Christmas my true love gave to me novelty bathroom furniture; granted it doesn’t have the same ring, but it will certainly add personality to your bathroom.
The two must-haves this holiday season are:
1. A Santa toilet seat cover – They are widely available, dirt cheap and I’ll confess to owning one myself.
2. A reindeer shower curtain – Whilst I don’t currently own one, it’s on next week’s shopping list.
