Adirondack Theatre Festival is presenting The Boy in the Bathroom as part of its 23rd summer season of professional theater. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 26-Saturday, July 29 and Tuesday, Aug. 1-Friday, Aug. 4, as well as a 2 p.m. matinee performance Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Charles R. Wood Theater.

In this musical love story, David has built an entire world for himself inside of his bathroom, refusing to leave for over a year. His mother cares for him, feeding him only food that can fit underneath the door. When David meets his mother's new caretaker, Julie, the two forge a relationship from across the bathroom door. They share stories, play games and trade knock-knock jokes, but will it be enough to get him to open up?

"This musical is adorable, sweet, funny, romantic, heartfelt and quirky," said Producing Artistic Director Chad Rabinovitz, who is directing the production. "It's such a captivating story unlike any other. It's the perfect show for the summer."

The Boy in the Bathroom is the winner of The American Harmony Prize and four New York Musical Festival Awards, including Most Promising New Musical and Best Book.

The book and lyrics are written by Michael Lluberes, with music and additional lyrics by Joe Maloney.

Actors include Alex Wyse (Broadway: Spring Awakening), Catherine Shaffner (Film: Hush) and Janet Krupin (Broadway: If/Then).

Bios

Chad Rabinovitz (Producing Artistic Director) is the only artist in the United States simultaneously serving as the Producing Artistic Director of two theaters devoted to new works: Adirondack Theatre Festival (Glens Falls, NY) & Bloomington Playwrights Project (Bloomington, IN). In addition to producing new works, Chad has directed more than 100 productions across the country, focusing primarily on new and contemporary plays and musicals. He is also the Producer of the Adirondack Film Festival as well a visual arts festival, Arts Fair on the Square. At ATF, Chad has grown attendance from 5,700 to over 11,500 in just 2 seasons, doubled subscribership, broke numerous box office records, introduced innovative children's programming and produced multiple best-selling shows in ATF's history. Under Rabinovitz's tenure, the Bloomington Playwrights Project has undergone what Bloom Magazine calls "a near miraculous renaissance", quintupling its subscribership, erasing all debt, and purchasing its building. Texas measures to restrict access for transgender people to bathrooms in schools and public buildings appear doomed this week after hundreds of businesses stood in opposition and moderate Republican powerbrokers blocked the bills.

The so-called bathroom bills have caused rifts among Republicans who control the state’s legislature, leaving no likely path to passage before a 30-day special session wraps on Wednesday, analysts and lawmakers said.

“The bathroom bill in this session is dead and buried with dirt over its coffin,” said Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University in Houston.

Enactment in Texas, the most populous Republican-dominated state, could give momentum to other socially conservative states for additional action on an issue that has become a flashpoint in the U.S. culture wars.

But House Speaker Joe Straus, a pro-business Republican who controls the agenda in the body, has shown little interest in passing a bathroom bill, which he said was not a priority.

His position was buffeted by a well-financed campaign from major corporations including Texas-based energy companies Halliburton and ExxonMobil Global Services , which have said the bills were discriminatory and would make it hard for them to recruit top talent.

Supporters of the legislation, who say it can help protect women and children from sexual assaults, have not given up.

But they acknowledge there is only a slim chance of success, with lawmakers still trying to reach deals on almost all of the 20 priority items set by Republican Governor Greg Abbott for the session.

Senate Bill 3, which made it through the Senate and stalled in the House, requires people to use restrooms, showers and locker rooms in public schools and other state and local government facilities that match the sex on their birth certificate, as opposed to their gender identity.

A push for bathroom bills nationally sputtered after North Carolina partially repealed such a measure in March after boycotts by athletic organizations and businesses that have cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars.

Opposition against the Texas measures includes global tech giants IBM and Apple , major Texas city police chiefs who contested claims the bills would protect public safety, left-leaning religious leaders and the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars team.

Republican Representative Ron Simmons, who sponsored a version of the bathroom legislation in the Texas House, said the privacy issue at the heart of the bills is supported by a wide majority of Republican primary voters.

“Just because we don’t pass legislation doesn’t mean that the issue is not going to be there,” he said.

BATH — A longtime volunteer has assumed leadership of Beaufort County’s Historic Bath Site.

Chris Umfleet, an Air Force veteran and former school teacher, began his stint as site manager June 15. Previously, he taught history at Chocowinity Middle School, served as director of economic development for the Town of Windsor and worked in the private banking industry. He majored in religion and minored in history at East Carolina University.

But his heart has long been in Bath.

“I’ve been volunteering here for about 20 years, off and on,” Umfleet noted. “And for 23 years I’ve been a living history historian; I’ve volunteered at most of the historic sites across the state.”

Even before he visited Bath, Umfleet was drawn to North Carolina’s oldest town.

“I’ve loved Bath since I was in fourth grade,” he recalled, adding that for a school project he wrote to chambers of commerce across the state asking for local information. Beaufort County was one of only two that responded.

“I was entranced by a photo they sent of Bonner’s Point,” he said.

Now, he is settling into his new job as overseer of the historic site that welcomes visitors from around the world each year.

“I basically coordinate anything and everything the site does,” Umfleet said. “My main purpose is to make sure programs are planned covering the 300-year history of Bath.”

He cherishes his memories of volunteering with Historic Bath in the past, especially working alongside the late Leigh Swain and the late Bea Latham, formerly Bath’s site director and assistant director, respectively.

Nowadays, he is the one whose shoulders bear the responsibilities of the site, which has five full-time employees, two part-time staff members and, he said, “a small army of volunteers.” But he loves every minute of it.

“Bath is such a special place,” he said. “It doesn’t feel like work to me.”

Umfleet is formulating long-term plans to expand Historic Bath’s outreach in the community. Among those plans are the implementation of more public programs, including his own live cooking demonstrations in the Bonner House kitchen.

But he added the staff can’t do it alone.

“We’re looking for more volunteers, we’re looking for kid and teen volunteers,” he said. “We’re looking for people to do demonstrations, and we’re willing to teach.”

Historic Bath Site is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 252-923-3971.
