DIY Daily Shower Spray

Read article : DIY Daily Shower Spray

We always hated how grimy our master bathroom shower stall would get a week or so after cleaning the shower. To remedy this, we started to buy and use daily shower sprays. But I wasn’t a fan of buying the sprays because the more green brands are obviously more expensive, and the more inexpensive brands seem to have a million chemicals in them. So I decided to whip up a batch of my own cost effective DIY daily shower spray.

Just call me Martha Stewart.

Although Martha would probably tell you to put 5 halved lemons that have been soaked in vinegar and sprinkled with dried saffron on the bottom of your shower stall while you shower. Or something like that.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray" width="650" height="975" />

Instead of making a bottle at a time, I decided to whip up almost a gallon of the daily shower spray. I mean, since I had all the ingredients out, I figured I might as well make a big batch.

We use distilled water in Owen’s nursery humidifier so we always have endless plastic gallon containers, so I grabbed one out of our recycling bin and took off the label.

Homemade <a href=daily shower spray cleaner" width="650" height="975" />

Instead of shelling out more money for a spray bottle, I used our last store-bought daily shower spray bottle.

With a little Goo Gone and elbow grease, I was able to get the label residue off.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray 1" width="650" height="433" />

I use a dollar store funnel that we keep under our kitchen sink to pour the cleaner into the spray bottle.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray 2" width="650" height="433" />

Here’s what you’ll need to make the DIY daily shower spray:

7 1/2 cups water
4 1/2 cups distilled white vinegar
2 1/2 cups rubbing alcohol
5 teaspoons dish soap (I use the Target generic Dawn blue dish soap)
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon oil (optional)

Using a funnel, pour all the ingredients into a gallon container. Put on the cap and shake.

Spray the daily shower spray on your shower surfaces after showering. No rinsing or elbow grease required.

This makes about 14 1/2 cups of cleaner.

The lemon oil, which is said to have disinfecting properties, helps hide the vinegar smell. You know, so your bathroom doesn’t smell like salad dressing after spraying the cleaner in your shower.

<a href=DIY daily shower spray" width="650" height="829" />

I could’ve been a fancy blogger and made custom vinyl labels for the bottles but I don’t have time for all that so I busted out a Sharpie to label the bottle and gallon refill jug.

We’ve been using my daily shower spray for a couple weeks, and it seems to be working just as well as the store-bought sprays. Yay for not having to deep clean our shower stall as often.

Deep Clean Bathroom Tips for all the forgotten areas

Read article : Deep Clean Bathroom Tips for all the forgotten areas

This post is sponsored by Dettol

I’ve shared recently how to create a shower cleaning kit, speed clean the bathroom and organise the bathroom cupboards, but there are so many other little areas in the bathroom that get neglected during the weekly bathroom cleaning routine.

<a href=Deep Clean Bathroom Tips" width="780" height="1560" />

Deep Clean Bathroom Tips

Below are a few deep cleaning bathroom tips for all the forgotten areas.

Plastic Shower curtain

It’s the worst when you jump into the shower and see dirt spots on the shower curtain, it can happen if the curtain doesn’t dry properly.

HOW TO CLEAN: Wipe over the curtain bottom of your curtain with a bathroom cleaner to remove any soap scum or dirt build up.  To freshen up the shower curtain pop the curtain in the wash with 2-3 bath towels (this will help prevent the curtain from crinkling too much in the machine) along with your regular detergent.  Then hang up to dry or check the label for washing instructions as you maybe able to put it in the dryer.

Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom

Dettol Healthy Clean range all help the home stay clean and hygienic.  The Healthy Clean Bathroom Spray is an easy effective everyday bathroom cleaner that can be used on bathroom surfaces such as sink & tiles, bath and counter tops, toilet seats, sealed wooden surfaces, glass surfaces, bins and floors, leaving the bathroom sparkling clean and kills 99.9% germs (E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus). Always read the label. Use only as directed.

Use Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom on all these tips to cut through dirt and soap scum to help keep your bathroom clean and hygienic with a fresh fragrance.

The sink drain

When brushing your teeth you’ll often see beyond the drain cover in the sink and see that it’s grotty.  In a regular clean, you would usually wipe over the top of the cover but just under the drain cover is usually a big build up of dirt, yuck!

HOW TO CLEAN: Get an old toothbrush and poke it into your sink drain cover, use this to help lift up the cover. Spray inside the drain and the drain cover with your bathroom cleaner, use the old toothbrush to help remove all the dirt. Once clean place cover back on.

Smelly Toilet

Whilst we clean the toilet seat and inside the bowl in a regular weekly bathroom clean, under the seat can often be forgotten, it an be a scary place, especially if you have boys as we know their aim can be terrible.

HOW TO CLEAN: Read how to clean a smelly toilet here. I’ve suggested natural products, but for those that don’t have the desire to make your own products, Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom Spray can work wonders.

Shower Door Tracks

When cleaning the shower this area can often be neglected, which leads to a heavy build up.

HOW TO CLEAN: As the buildup is quite hard in this area your cleaning solution needs to sit on top to soften the area so you can easily remove the grime.  Spray area as required and allow to sit for 10 minutes.  Use a toothbrush to get into the hard to reach areas, then wipe over with a cloth.

Shower Head

Shower heads are prone to build up of mineral deposits, dust, dirt etc which affects the water pressure and spurts water out in all different directions.  Cleaning the shower head in your regular bathroom cleaning routine will help prevent the build up.

Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel Review

Read article : Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel Review

I have recently reviewed the Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Body Lotion and I am loving it; I use these products regularly. The best part about Bourbon Vanilla is the fragrance. It’s so intense that I can skip the perfume. To have best results, I use the shower gel and body lotion in combination.

Yves Rocher <a href=Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel" width="700" height="467" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-399575" />

Product Description:
The pleasure of a gentle bath, shower gel with a sensual fragrance
For a voluptuous and sensual moment under the shower or in the bath, our unique chain of experts since 1959, have chosen and combined Organic Aloe Vera gel, with a Bourbon Vanilla extract. The skin is gently cleansed and delicately perfumed. Tested under dermatological supervision.
Beauty Promise The skin is gently cleansed and delicately perfumed.

Secret of the Botanical Yves Rocher has chosen a Bourbon Vanilla that is grown in the tradition of Bourbon Island. As a member of the orchid family, its fragrance leaves a veil of satiny sensuality on the skin, like an intoxicating caress. The scent opens with a luminous note then develops its suave and enveloping personality.

Cost: 4€ for 200ml
Ingredients:

My Experience with Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel:

The shower gel comes in a small round plastic bottle with a flip lid. The packaging is very sturdy. The flap lid sometimes gets a little difficult to open as it’s a little tight. It can easily damage the nails. So, I make sure not to use the nails to open it. But it is travel safe since there is no chance that the flap would open up automatically. The bottle is transparent, which makes it easy to know the amount of the product left. The packaging is sturdy and looks pretty on the bathroom counter.

Yves Rocher <a href=Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel packaging" width="700" height="467" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-399577" />

The consistency of the product is viscous, not water like but a little thicker. It is amber in color. I use twice the walnut size for my entire body. The shower gel spreads very easily on the skin and also creates a good amount of lather. The skin feels smooth and clean after the shower. The product does not leave the skin dry. The fragrance is worth talking about. It has an intense Bourbon Vanilla fragrance. The fragrance is definitely appealing to most people. The fragrance lasts for few hours after wash.

I would recommend using the complementing body lotion so that the fragrance doesn’t interfere with other products. One can even skip the perfume when shower gel and the body lotion from the same range are used together. The shower gel did not cause any kind of irritation to the skin. Overall, it’s a very nice product. I love it. I would prefer this shower gel for summer months due to the spring fragrance.

Yves Rocher <a href=Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel swatch" width="400" height="267" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-399578" />

Pros of Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel:

• Small, handy packaging.
• Lathers well.
• Mild fragrance.
Lovely Bourbon Vanilla fragrance.
• Fragrance lasts for few hours.
• Little goes a long way.
• Does not dry out the skin.
• Suitable for dry skin too.

Cons of Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Sensual Bath & Shower Gel:

• Opening the flap lid can get little hard and damage nails.
• Slightly expensive.

IMBB Rating: 4.9/5
Will I Repurchase Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Bath and Shower Gel?
Sure. I love using it and am currently using it on a daily basis. I feel so special after using the product.
Do I Recommend Yves Rocher Bourbon Vanilla Bath and Shower Gel?

Door Tracks:
*First published February 14, 2007 and moved to this page for better organization

If it’s just regular cleaning you need to do, simply pour vinegar in the tracks, soak for a few minutes then rinse out with water.

Make sure the drain holes aren’t clogged with gunk, you want the water to flow out easily. Also lay towels on the bathroom floor along the bathtub to catch any water overflow.

If it’s a grime, gunk and mildew disaster on your hands, you can try the following tips…

First clean out as much as you can, then stuff the drain holes with small, tight wads of toilet paper or chunks of paper towel. Pour preferred grime buster solution (listed below) in the track to completely cover without flowing over, then allow to soak for an hour or two.

Loosening Up The Grime:

  • Coca-Cola
  • Vinegar
  • Denture Tablets (first dissolved in warm water)
  • Bleach & Water

After soaking, unclog the drain holes and allow cleaner to flow out of the tracks. Rinse well with hot water. Then get your tools out and dig into the little corners and crevices. See below for some tools to try.

Tools

  • Shower Track & Grout Brush
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Q-tips
  • Handheld Steam Cleaner
  • Screwdriver and rag to dig into grime corners

If things are really bad:

  • Remove the doors to do a thorough cleaning job. Instructions can be found at WikiHow.

Caution:

  • I don’t know how the above solutions will react with all the various metals and finishes used for tracks, please test first before using to ensure they (or the finish) won’t be damaged.

How to avoid mistakes when choosing a mixer

Read article : How to avoid mistakes when choosing a mixer

Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя

The mixer is an important part of kitchen and bathroom, which directly affects our daily comfort. To verify this it is enough to recall their feelings when the faucet suddenly started to leak or even break. However, how to choose among the enormous diversity of models, especially if they want to save money and time and choose the mixer independently in the catalog online store? Let’s step by step walk through all the options that you should consider when choosing a mixer. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя The design of the mixers Any mixer is composed of standard structural components: body, spout, mechanism of mixing, control and aerator. The housing of the mixer can be molded or mobile. In the first case, the stationary housing is a mechanism of the spout, and the lever on the side of it. These faucets are reliable and easy to repair, but less convenient to operate. Swivel body allows for greater convenience and water savings, but may require periodic replacement of gaskets rotating part of the mechanism.
Spout or goose — this is the part of the faucet, from which water flows. When choosing a particular model, pay attention to the height of the spout (can be from 2 to 90 cm) and its length (3 to 5 cm). They should correlate with the dimensions of the tub or sink so that water is not hitting the boards, was not sprayed and you have enough space to wash dishes or hands. The aerator attaches to the tip of the spout and consists of a metal mesh through which water is mixed with air. The aerator makes the water pressure is more soft, uniform and comfortable. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Different mechanisms of mixing water Depending on the design of the mixer may vary and the mechanism of mixing water in it. Should there be any doubt that this factor will significantly influence your comfort and his life Kran-buksa The usual inside valve mixer tap with two handles for temperature and water head is a device called a crane buxoi. It connects to the valve and directly responsible for the water supply. There are two basic types of crane-books: worm gear and ceramic. The mechanism of the worm tap-bushing is a screw, one end of which is connected with the valve and the other to a rod on which is fixed a strip of rubber. When rotating the crane, the screw moves along the thread inside the tap head parts, rubber gasket is moving around, opening or closing the water supply.
It is obvious that the rubber gasket in the process of operation will rapidly deteriorate, and although it is inexpensive, the trouble of regular changing pads is inevitable. Ceramic crane Bush is characterized by the presence of two ceramic disks, one of which is stationary and the other is attached to the stock. Rotation of the valve causes the alignment of the holes on the discs, the water flowing in the mixer, or displaces them and the water flow stops. This type of faucet head parts are more durable and easy to use, but are more expensive and sensitive to water quality, as even a small grain of sand between the discs could be damaged. In case of breakage, you will have to remove the faucet-the journal box and around a lot of shops to find the suitable for your model of mixer. Crane-axle mixers are usually affordable and easy to repair, but have a high consumption of water and not too easy to manage. Ball mechanism Faucets with ball mechanism equipped with a handle which is adjustable and pressure, and water temperature. They work on the same principle as ceramic crane Bush, but instead of the disks they are placed in a hollow metal sphere with three holes (for cold water, hot water and for mixing them). Cuff and gaskets, locking mechanism ball, fairly quickly wear out causing the faucet may begin to leak. Cartridge Cartridge single lever mixer consists of two discs made of ceramic, as in the case of ceramic valve-boxes, and is a single piece, which, in case of breakage, changing completely. It is compact, most durable and easy to control mechanism. From the design perspective, this option presents the greatest scope for choosing a suitable model mixer. However, you must remember that all single lever faucets are sensitive to water quality and preferably the installation of the pipes filters purification. Various options for the installation of faucets To choose a mixer, you will have to decide exactly where it will be installed, especially now that it offers lots of options for every shape and preferences. Installation options of the mixer: wall (if the bath and sink are so close that you can do it all with one mixer, but in new houses this option is not always possible, as the pipe system in them is hidden and divorced separately for sinks and baths); outdoor (very effective from the point of view of design, however, costly and requires a lot of space variant); embedded (all liner pipes hiding behind the body of the sink or bath); embedded in the rim of the tub (you can find the model of the bath, designed for this type of machine, or embed it in the normal acrylic bathtub); ceiling (ceiling shower can provide a whole range of pleasant sensations and different options of water flow, but not always convenient for technical purposes). Classification by application Do not think that the same mixer suitable for sink in the kitchen and in the bathroom, because they differ not only in design, but structurally, for example, the length and direction of the spout, methods of control and installation, and materials. Consider specific options. Basin mixer As a rule, modern sinks apply embedded single-lever faucet with short fixed spout. The spout height of 12-15 cm is sufficient for washing hands and washing, besides, it would suit almost any, even shallow sink. If the sink located in the bathroom next to the toilet, it makes sense to equip it with a hygienic shower, which are easy to replace and bidet can be installed to separate the bathroom without a sink. Its principle of operation is simple: water passes through the spout of the faucet above the sink, regulate its pressure and temperature. Basin mixer with hygienic shower fitted with a button, clicking which you direct the water flow through the hose. After water treatment, the key should be released and water will again run the spout into the sink. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя For kitchen sinks In the kitchen are commonly used built-in mixers. Their main difference from the models for bathroom is the shape and size of the spout. For most kitchen faucets are characterized by long, swivel spout, allowing you to wash even large pots. The higher spout, the stronger the water pressure, however, and the likelihood that it would be in a spray, which means you’ll need a sink with a deep bowl. Choose a sink and faucet for the kitchen at the same time it is desirable that their dimensions match each other.
Kitchen faucets include a wide variety of materials. Featuring not only brass, bronze and chrome, but the original mixers-metal and plastic. If the kitchen has a double sink or have the need to wash heavy dishware, you can install telescopic mixer, consisting of several hollow tubes. In this case it is better to choose a trusted manufacturer, because additional connections increase the risk of failure of joints, gaskets, etc. If you want a kitchen faucet it covered a large area, it offers mixers with the exhaust pipe. Inside a small decorative crane hides hose 1-1. 5 m as a conventional soul, which you can use to reach different areas of the kitchen. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Bath First of all, we should note that the bathtub faucets can be combined with a shower. Shower faucets are compact and do not have switch shower-bath and the spout, since the water is immediately fed to shower heads. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Bathtub faucets with shower — the most common and versatile option. They are usually equipped with low spout and can be either fixed or swivel (suitable if one mixer is used for baths and sinks). In addition, the kit usually comes with a height adjustable shower holder. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя For shower rack The reception is a bar with multiple shower heads and allows you to combine the functions of a bath and a shower stall. The top rack is stationary watering can, allowing you to change the mode of water flow and provide a massaging and relaxing effect. In addition to the upper lake on the rack is usually attached shower with flexible hose. The alternative is a wall panel lake of arbitrary shape, directing water on you in the form of small rain drops with massage effect, so, it was called “tropical storm”. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Ceiling shower Ceiling shower is used to create the effect of home spa, which provides various modes of water supply from tight massage jets, relaxing rain. The size of the ceiling of the heads ranges from 15 to 50 cm in diameter and unusual. This is a great option for relaxation, but a regular shower with a flexible hose for domestic use you still need. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Bidet There are various options of mixers for bidets. You can choose a universal model, similar to the conventional mixer, however, is equipped with aerator that allows you to change the direction of the jet. In addition to bidet will fit faucets with hose for hygienic shower and faucets with a spout for bidet function internal padding. In the latter case, the mixer is mounted on the bottom of the bowl. Manufacturers The choice of mixers to suit different tastes and wallet today. Among the budget include a variety of mixers from China. The price of these products are really small however, it is unlikely that you can count on any guarantee of quality. Inexpensive cost and models of domestic production, for example, brand Rossinka. If we talk about popular brands in the higher price categories, well-established in the domestic market, the most popular Grohe (Germany), Hansgrohe (Germany), Jacob Delafon (France), Roca (Spain), etc. In their collections you can find both simple and reliable model of the average price, and the more original and expensive options created by the famous designers. Special types of faucets Modern faucets can be equipped with additional features designed to make your daily life or professional activities more comfortable. Thermostatic mixers The thermostat ensures the water supply is strictly selected temperature and pressure, protecting from unpleasant surprises during water treatment. Thermostatic mixers can be electronic with display for settings and mechanical, does not require additional power source and tuning with levers and valves. Как не ошибиться при выборе смесителя Faucets with touch controls Touch mixer has levers and valves and consists only of a crane. It is equipped with a photocell that respond to movement in a zone of about 30 cm using the special lever you set the optimal temperature of the water, which will be switched on and off automatically. Touch mixer will save you from worrying about whether you turned off the faucet and does not burn the children. On the other hand, it is not suitable for the kitchen or for a set of baths, as there need each time different temperature. Basically touch faucets used in public restrooms to save water and hygiene. Cascading mixers Cascading mixers differ from the ordinary form of a spout, from which water flows a broad stream, resembling a waterfall. Their advantages are a stylish and original appearance, durability and the ability to separate installation when the crane is located at one end of the bath, and the controls in another, and the main drawback — relatively high cost. Faucets with suction shower for hairdressers For beauty salons for the convenience of the client and the master used special types of mixers with long pull-out shower. As a rule, they are single lever and is also equipped with an aerator to reduce splashing and ensure a softer stream of water even under strong pressure. Surgical faucets The main difference between surgical mixers — long handle that allows you to turn on and off the water with your elbow, not touching your hands to the mixer, which is caused by increased hygienic requirements. Such mixers can be installed at home, such as in the kitchen and for people with disabilities. Modern faucet is not just a utilitarian device, and the interior decoration, possible to ease your household chores and get pleasure from the water treatments. On the website santechsystemy.ru you can find truly wide selection of faucets for any type of premises, preferences and financial possibilities. You should go and see it for yourself!

the ultimate guide to deep cleaning your bathroom

Read article : the ultimate guide to deep cleaning your bathroom

There’s nothing quite like a sparkling, pristine bathroom, after all, it is where you get clean. But how exactly do you give it a professional clean? Running a squeegee down the sides of the shower does a great deal of good, but every now and then a proper deep clean is in order. Here are 15 steps to getting it spick and span.

1. Open the windows

Before you pick up a sponge, open all the windows to let the fresh air circulate.

A squeegee in the shower isn't always enough.A squeegee in the shower isn’t always enough. Photo: istock

2. Clear everything

That’s right, everything – from towels, bath mats, shower curtains and liners, to freestanding furnishings, shower caddies and anything on the countertops and shelving. Now you only have clear surfaces to work with.

3. Put on a wash

Toss your shower curtains and liners into the washing machine using regular detergent and a warm and gentle setting, along with your towel and bath mat, which act like scrubbers and prevent the plastic from crinkling. Add ½ cup of chlorine bleach and ¼ cup of detergent to help clear dirt, soap scum and mildew stains.

4. Allow things to soak

Start the deep clean process by pouring a cup of bicarb soda down the toilet bowl. Got rings around the tub? Try placing paper towels soaked with white vinegar on any stains and any hard water or mineral deposits around faucets and drains. Leave for at least 15 minutes before going in for the scrub. A piece of dental floss can help you get into those hard-to-reach crevices.

5. Get scrubbing

Stains, be gone! How you clean your bathtub depends on what it’s made from. For porcelain, you can get away with abrasive powders such as Ajax and scouring pads and pumice stones. If enamel, try bleach-free commercial cleaners. And if acrylic, use white vinegar, soft sponges and other gentle solutions.

6. Don’t forget the shower head

Your shower head can harbour infectious bacteria known as mycobacterium avium, a nasty bug linked to lung disease. To clean, pour a generous amount of white vinegar into a plastic bag and secure over your shower head using a rubber band. Leave it to soak overnight and then remove the bag and rinse in the morning.

7. Don’t forget your toilet brush

Take your toilet brush, place over the toilet bowl and pour bleach over the bristles. Allow it to stand for a few minutes before rinsing it with a cup of cold water. And don’t forget to rinse the canister out with hot, soapy water, too – pouring the dirty water down the toilet and not the sink.

8. Remove the exhaust fan cover

One of the most neglected areas of the bathroom are exhaust fans, despite them being a hot spot for airborne particles. Flip the switch and remove the cover, then soak in warm water and detergent. Wipe the blades and get into the crannies with a stiff paintbrush. Leave to completely dry before reattaching it. And another tip! Always run the fan during and for 30 minutes after your shower to reduce mould and mildew.

9. Sweep the floors

Dry sweep the bathroom floors to clear dirt, dust, hair and other bits and pieces you’d rather not swish around as you clean. Make sure you clean from top to bottom so any debris that falls will be wiped away.

10. Wet wash the floors

Use a wet cloth, if your bathroom is small, or a mop if big. Work from the far corner toward the door. Leave to dry before you enter again to place everything back.

11. Steam clean the walls and ceilings

Spray walls and ceilings with all-purpose cleaner, then blast hot water in the shower and close the door, allowing the steam to build. Leave to steam clean for 20 minutes before wiping down all the surfaces with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. And don’t forget to wipe the towel bar with an all-purpose cleaner – it tends to harbour a lot of bacteria.

12. Get a shiny, fog-free mirror

To clean your mirror (and any glass surface, for that matter), use coffee filters soaked in window cleaner or white vinegar. They’re cheap – and won’t leave any streaks or lint. To keep it fog free, rub a dry bar of soap onto the surface and buff it with a clean microfibre cloth until you can no longer see any marks.

13. Wipe the windows – reaching every corner

A steam cleaner works wonders on the rubber sills and tracks of your windows. A couple of blasts with the steam, followed by a wipe down with a paper towel, will work wonders. If you don’t have a steam cleaner, try applying a paste made from bicarb soda and white vinegar, leaving it an hour, and then scrubbing it using a toothbrush.

14. Toss out any unnecessary products

Worried to see what lurks under your sink? Time to give it a good clean out! Consolidate products, toss out what you don’t need and put items back on a shelf liner.

15. Keep it up

Daily once-overs – wiping down the condensation from your shower and mopping the floors, for example, will take the pain out of your next clean, trust us!

Make sure to keep it up!

How Californians Are Coping With the Drought

Read article : How Californians Are Coping With the Drought

Earlier this month, California Governor Jerry Brown made an unprecedented decision: To fight back the devastating effects of the drought that is currently racking the state, its citizens will be forced tocut their water use by 25 percent. It was the first such conservation mandate in the state’s history.

Though the executive order has been widely lauded for pushing the state toward a more water-conservative future, it’s still unclear exactly how it will be practically implemented. On Saturday, the State Water Resources Control Board issued arevised set of draft regulations to execute the order. In it, individual water districts are given their own water reduction targets; those areas that have historically been big water wasters will be expected to cut back the most, and those that have already shown success in conservation won’t have to reduce use significantly. (There currently are no additional cutbacks required of agricultural water users.) There is a small window of time open for public comment, and the board is expected to vote on the regulations during the first week of May.

In reality, though, the drought has already forced many Californians to adapt to a new way of life.Newsweekput out a call to residents of the state to ask them what they’ve done in the past year to adjust.

Rona Lewis, Nutritionist, Los Angeles

I live in an apartment, and they’ve replaced our regular toilets with low flow. Personally, I try to do little things to help: turn off the water when I’m brushing my teeth, turn it off when I’m washing my hair or waiting for the conditioner to soak in.

I’m a fitness trainer and take a lot of my clients out for power walks during the day. I see a bunch of homes with either Astroturf instead of real grass or desert-type foliage along with rocks for front lawns. It’s hard for those of us who like to grow our own food—I only have a few pots on my balcony for herbs and tomatoes, but my clients and friends who have full-fledged vegetable gardens are frustrated at the restrictions laid upon them.

What so many of us don’t understand is why there is such a fight against building desalination plants. It would solve so many water issues here!

Brian Milne, Business Development Manager, Paso Robles

I live in wine country on the Central Coast of California where we have a ton of vineyards sucking up water and a whole host of water issues.

We had the lake in my hometown of Atascadero go dry. Lakes where I learned to fish (and have written fishing guides and hiking guides about) have gone almost dry.

Our family has cut our water use drastically. We have the brownest lawn on the block, and I'm proud of it. I've only watered our lawn once this spring, and that was when we drained our spa to irrigate our landscape. Our spa is now empty and we don't plan on using it this summer. We've also built a gray-water system that waters our roses from the washer at my parents house. We also have buckets under our rain gutters and use buckets in the shower to catch excess water and reuse it around the house when appropriate.

Additionally, I love to surf, and I've made my own portable shower out of a Roundup Weed Killer Sprayer, and put a pump and nozzle on it and use it to wash off with very little water at the beach. Many state parks in California no longer have water, or the showers they do have waste a significant amount of water. Using my portable shower, I can spread a couple gallons for about three to four showers in the mornings after surfing. That's a lot better than the American average of 17 gallons per shower!

Catherine Trainor, Startup Entrepeneur, Oakland

We bought a pump so that each time we take a bath we can pump that water into a hose to water the plants with. We have a pitcher by the sink so we can pour half-drunk water glasses, water from boiling vegetables, etc., [and use that] to water the plants. In the summer, we let our lawn die. One thing we wish we could do (and that everyone could do) would be to collect water off of our roof for when it rains. An inch of rain on our roof would give us 600 gallons of water, and we'd like to keep it!

Also coming up for the summer: bucket shower!

Hilary Achauer, Writer and Editor, San Diego

We just ripped out our front, south-facing lawn and installed California native plants. We did not install irrigation. The plan is to water it twice a week for eight weeks, and then it should be established well enough that it won't need watering. We've even got some trees—two shoestring acacia trees and an incredible paloverde tree, which is a desert tree with lovely yellow flowers.

Chantay Bridges, Realtor, Los Angeles

At first, I was not dealing with it at all. I heard about it, I felt it, I saw the effects of it. Originally, I sort of buried my head in the sand and attempted to ignore it. Now that it's at a massive level and mandates are being formed, I have taken a look at it more closely. Here's now how we are dealing with the impact of the California drought:

We have reduced our water usage. In lieu of washing daily, even if it's one blouse, we now only wash once per week as an entire family We have adjusted our automatic water sprinklers. Now there are a couple of days where the lawn is not being watered at all. We are not encouraging water type of games with the kids and their friends. Instead, we have given them other options, despite the nice weather.

We are talking to our neighbors, friends and co-workers soliciting suggestions of more ways to conserve. We attended a few neighborhood meetings where they discussed it in length, to educate ourselves and learn best practices.

We are shopping more for water and keep an emergency supply in the home.

04_23_Ca_water_03 Some Californians have stopped watering lawns and plants and others have reduced how often they run sprinklers. Elijah Wolfson

V.J. Sleight, Smoking Cessation Counselor, La Quinta

I have cut the size of my lawn by 75 percent, and I am considering getting rid of the rest of it. I've stopped taking showers every day, especially since some days the only exertion I get is sitting at a desk. I contacted the local water agency, which gave me low-flow nozzles for shower and sinks, plus a plastic bag for the toilet to reduce the amount of water used. I use a dry brush on my car instead of always getting a car wash.

John Cox, Chef, Big Sur

This week [at the Post Ranch Inn], we started using compressed air to clean the plates before loading them into the dish machine. Traditionally, the spray nozzle at the dish station is one of the kitchen's biggest uses of water. By adding the compressed air gun to the station, we have been able to reduce the usage of the water in that area by 80 percent and actually increase productivity. That is a huge savings!

Natalie Nicole Gilbert, Singer/Songwriter, Los Angeles

We received pamphlets last year asking us to avoid water usage during the day as much as possible, such as we would use for laundry, dishwashers, etc. We've since started washing dishes by hand, waiting until a laundry basket is full to do laundry, kept a tighter eye on leaks and drips from the faucets, and generally cut back our water usage on every front we can easily control.

When my doctor advised I take lengthy showers to combat my bronchitis and borderline pneumonia, I balanced that advice with using a small facial and sinus steamer that had much the same effect but required less than one cup of water to create the steam.

We have also thought about moving out of state, particularly because the drought shows no signs of improvement anytime soon. We've begun circulating résumés as far away as the U.K. and Denmark.

Gretchen Hydo, Public Relations Professional, Sherman Oaks

To reduce water, we have cut back on laundry and are wearing our clothes more, flushing toilets less, and watering less. I am a life coach who works from home and my clients come to the house. I did not want to let my garden or my lawn go because it doesn’t look very appealing. The guilt I was having about watering and planting was taking its toll. I called a landscaper to see about drought-tolerant plants (I do not think they are appealing at all, but needed to do something). He came over, and after talking I discovered that I could keep my lawn and my plants and save up to 40 percent of water. It sounded too good to be true, but it worked.

Here are the things we did:

  • We put in a drip system.
  • In our flower garden we put in water beads that expand 300 percent. They hold water so that you can water less (and the plants still receive water).
  • We put in some individual sprayers to the root balls of the plants so that they got the water (that is all that needs the water to grow).
  • We mulched.
  • We put in a tank that automatically feeds the lawn and flowers bio stimulants—this makes the flowers bloom, keeps them healthy and keep the grass green. It also cuts down on the water
  • And…..I did put in some colorful, drought tolerant plants

Our yard looks amazing.

Liam Collopy, Communications Executive, Manteca

We recently had a pool company come to our home—which routinely reaches 100-degree temperatures in the summer—to provide a design plan and estimate. With the drought and pending water restrictions, we've had to seriously rethink. In addition, the future of our well-manicured plush green front lawn-which is watered according to preset timers—is quickly becoming an offensive luxury as the drought lingers.

This is the new normal in the Central Valley of California. Appearance is out. Water efficiency and conservation is in.

I'm saddened not only for the farmers in our region but for future generations. I'm not an alarmist but my fear is California is turning into a desert.

Nigel Ravenhill, IT Marketing Specialist, Napa

Drought has made me way, way more conscious of even wasting a little bit of water. Now, if there's some water left in a drinking glass, instead of pouring it down the drain, I either water plants inside or walk outside and empty it in one of our outdoor planters or over our potted meyer lemon tree.

Similarly, I don't let the water go straight down the drain if I'm running the tap to get hot water to wash the dishes. Instead of letting a gallon go down the drain, I'll refill the electric kettle or fill-up jugs for watering the plants before the hot water arrives in the tap.

I had almost a crisis of conscience last Saturday morning after having an ice bath following a hard running workout. I was very tempted afterwards to get a bucket from the garage and move the however many gallons from the second floor bathroom to the garden for watering. My wife ended up pulling the plug later in the day.

All three of these behaviors wouldn't have earned a second thought in previous years.

Finally, we're also thinking of removing the front-yard lawn but we live in a neighborhood with restrictions on landscaping options so we're not even sure this will be possible.

And that's what life is now like in California.

How Often You Should Clean Your Sheets (and 14 Other Household Items)

Read article : How Often You Should Clean Your Sheets (and 14 Other Household Items)

Whether you’re a neat freak or a bit messier, it’s not uncommon for certain cleaning projects to wind up at the bottom of your chores list. But keeping a clean home is imperative for anyone trying to live a healthy life. Seriously, a dirty home that’s full of dust mites, bacteria, and mold can have some nasty consequences for your health (salmonella poisoning, anyone?). And just because you’re not a complete hoarder, doesn’t mean your home is spotless.

Let’s take a look at what in your home needs some scouring.

Kitchen:

Sponge: Clean every day

Kitchen sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria. Just think about everything you use them for: cleaning dishes, wiping up spills — you name it.

")};

As The Huffington Post points out, a sponge with an odor is a sponge with germs — germs that may lead to some serious health issues such as salmonella or pneumonia (yikes!). But don’t worry, there’s a solution. To properly clean your kitchen sponges, soak them in a mixture of one part bleach and nine parts water for about 30 seconds.

Dish towels: Clean once a week

In most homes, dish towels see quite a bit of action. There are usually a handful in rotation, but you might not be changing them as often as you should. Maeve Richmond, founder of a home organizing company, tells Grandparents.com it’s best to toss dish towels in the wash every week. Not only are they used by lots of people, but dish towels often collect food crumbs and are the number one go-to for spill clean-ups.

Refrigerator: Disinfect and wipe out every week

Seeing as the fridge is an everyday appliance, upkeep is crucial. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says, “Mold, bacteria, and spills in the refrigerator can put you at risk for food poisoning.” Because of this, you should clean spills immediately, and do a larger cleaning job weekly. But of course, be weary of using your trusty kitchen sponge. A cleaning disinfectant spray and paper towel is the better way to go.

Trash can: Spray it down every two weeks

This is one you may easily forget, but it’s important. There’s not really much explaining to do here, as you’re well aware your trash can sees more germs that most other places. And even scented trash bags don’t negate the filth that lies beneath.

Bathroom:

Towels: Wash after three uses

Bath towels can easily slide under the radar when it comes to keeping them clean. However, it’s important to wash them after just three uses. Kelly A. Reynolds, Ph.D., told BuzzFeed, “Towels used after bathing or showering that are just damp could be hung to dry and used up to three times. Bacteria and mold will begin to accumulate but growth will be slowed as the towel dries.” You know the smell of a moldy towel, so don’t ignore it.

Bras: Wash every two to three wears

While underwear should quite obviously be washed after each and every use, bras are a bit different. They don’t require a washing every day, but they do need some TLC.

According to Bustle, a dirty bra could result in acne breakouts, rashes or infections, and chafing nipples. For these reasons, Josh Zeichner, M.D., tells Shape you should wash your bras every after every two to three wears — every five is the very max.

Toilet: Give it a scrub every week

Now clearly, cleaning your toilet works on an as-needed basis. When you see something, you should probably clean it right then and there. But if you simply never feel like cleaning your toilet, just give this fun little article from HowStuffWorks a read.

A dirty toilet is, no doubt, putting you and your fellow bathroom-goers at risk.

Shower loofah: Clean it once a week

It may sound counter-intuitive that you have to wash something that washes you, but it needs to be done. Similar to the kitchen sponge, your favorite loofah is ground zero for all kinds of bacteria. Yikes! Dermatologist Melissa Piliang, M.D., recommends cleaning it weekly (by soaking it in a diluted bleach solution), and replacing it every three to four weeks. Or, on second thought, just toss it for good and switch to washcloths.

Makeup brushes: Clean them every two weeks

When you think about it, makeup brushes can actually be pretty gross. You use them on a daily basis, and they remain covered in product. Not only are they collecting makeup, but just think about all of the oil that’s already living on your face before you’ve applied anything at all. So, the secret to makeup brush maintenance? Cleaning about every two weeks. And if you’re not sure how, check out Kayleen McAdams’s explanation of the process in Elle.

Toothbrush: Replace every three to four months

There are all kinds of brushers out there. From those who think it’s no biggie to share theirs with others to the ones who religiously brush their teeth in the shower, toothbrushes are put through the ringer. So, it should come as no surprise they need to be replaced every so often.

Bedroom:

Bed sheets: Wash them once per week

Handsome man Your sheets are likely long overdue for a wash. | iStock.com/rilueda

Now for one you’re likely neglecting: your sheets. While you’re probably well aware of all the germs living in your bed, do you really know how often you should be changing your sheets?

For a trusted opinion on the matter, we turned to the expert — Martha Stewart. Her site recommends you wash bed linens once a week. After all, just think about all the dirt, dust, and sweat you could end up rolling around in on a nightly basis. When you think about it that way, a weekly wash makes a lot of sense.

Duvet cover: Wash it monthly

young man smiles as he lounges on his stomach in bed Just because it’s protecting your comforter doesn’t mean it can bypass a good cleaning. | iStock.com

Nothing’s better than a down comforter, which is why lots of folks choose the down-comforter-and-duvet-cover route. Aside from feeling as though you’re sleeping on a cloud, a good duvet offers your comforter protection from filth. This, once again, is a case for Martha Stewart’s team of experts, who recommend washing comforter covers weekly if you don’t use a top sheet, and monthly if you do.

Mattress: Clean it every season

Bed sheet and pillow on mattress Believe it or not, your mattress does need to be cleaned. | iStock.com

While cleaning your mattress sounds like a pain, it’s easier than you may think. PopSugar recommends using a mixture of baking soda and essential oil. After sprinkling the cleaning solution, rub it into the mattress, spreading evenly. Give it about an hour to work its magic, then vacuum it up. Whatever you do, don’t skimp on mattress spring — or summer, or winter, or fall — cleaning.

Pillows: Wash them every six months

While your pillowcases can be tossed into the sheets category, the actual pillows themselves are a different story. Besides collecting all the grossness that comes along with their cases, pillows eventually lose their fluff factor, and you certainly don’t want to be laying your pretty little head on an unsupportive pillow. If you’re not quite sure how to go about washing your pillows, Good Housekeeping breaks it down based on type.

Carpet: Clean it once a year

carpet being cleaned Everything gets tracked onto the carpet. | iStock.com

Vacuuming is key, but it doesn’t mean you can skimp on deep cleaning your carpet, as well. According to Angie’s List, you should get a carpet cleaning service every 12 to 18 months for high-traffic areas, and every two years for the entire carpet. If you have children or pets, it’s another story: Your carpets may require stain removal more frequently.
