How to Choose a Shower Curtain Rod | Home Guides

Read article : How to Choose a Shower Curtain Rod | Home Guides
The right shower curtain rod can enhance your bathroom decor.

The right shower curtain rod can enhance your bathroom decor.

A shower curtain makes a big statement in your bathroom, but it is important to consider the shower curtain rod as well. Shower curtain rods are available in a variety of styles and materials, and finding the perfect rod for your bathroom depends on a number of factors.

Decor

Look for a shower curtain rod to complement your bathroom’s decor. Things like wall coverings and colors as well as fixture styles and finishes should play into your decision. The pattern, style and material of the shower curtain you will be hanging from the rod is a big consideration and so are the types and colors of towels, bathmat and rugs.

Materials

Shower curtain rods can be both utilitarian and aesthetically pleasing. They are manufactured to be strong enough to hold up a shower curtain as well as damp towels hung over them to dry and they come in a variety of materials to enhance your bathroom. Most shower curtain rods are made of either plastic or metal. Shower curtain rods made of wood are also an option. A plastic rod that complements your bathroom style is a good way to enhance the room’s decor. Plastic rods come in many colors and are reasonably priced. Their only drawback is that they are not as durable as metal rods. A chrome rod works well with chrome light fixtures, faucets and towel bars and gives the room a modern touch. A shower curtain rod with a brass finish will work well in an Old World-influenced room while one of wood would be a good choice for a country or primitive style bathroom.

Shapes

If you would like more room in the shower, consider a rod that curves outward. A shower above a claw foot tub calls for a circular rod while a corner shower requires one that is L-shaped. Measure the area to be sure you buy a rod that is the correct size. Most shower curtain rods are adjustable, but keep in mind that you can make a large rod smaller but it is difficult to make a rod that is too small larger.

Wall Type

Consider the material of the wall where you will hang your shower curtain. For example, if your tub or shower surround is tile, a spring or tension rod that expands by twisting and adheres to the wall with friction is a good choice because you don’t need to drill into the wall to install it.

Stall Size Shower Curtains for a Stately Bathroom

Read article : Stall Size Shower Curtains for a Stately Bathroom
If you have a stall shower, then having a shower curtain is a must for reasons mentioned above. You may not be aware, but apart from vinyl curtains (that are very popular and inexpensive), there are many other varieties to choose from. There are new styles, trends and patterns available that cater to every type of decor.
Types of Shower Curtains
Shower curtains are prominently made of vinyl or plastic. But, apart from these synthetic materials, you will also find curtains made of natural material like cotton, hemp, etc. Let us take a look, in brief, at the types and features of the different shower curtains.
These are the most popular or commonly used shower curtains. They are inexpensive, durable and waterproof or water-repellent. They are also easy-to-use and clean. As they are available in different sizes and colors, you can surely find one that suits the decor and overall look of your bathroom. Vinyl curtains are also found in exciting designs and themes, suitable for adults' as well as kids' bathroom. At the same time, solid color curtains are also very popular.
When it comes to use and applicability, polyester curtains are very much similar to vinyl curtains. 100% polyester is waterproof and easily washable (can be washed in a machine). It does not require any maintenance. On the other hand, you can also consider going for shower curtains made partly of cotton and partly of polyester. These curtains are perfectly suitable for contemporary as well as traditional decor. Vinyl and plastic shower curtains are suited for high-traffic bathrooms.
Cotton Fabric
Now, if you want something more elegant than plastic, then you can opt for cotton shower curtains. They are environment-friendly. They are also available in large number of colors and patterns. On the flip side, cleaning and maintaining these curtains is not as easy as cleaning vinyl or polyester ones. They take a longer time to dry and mildew quickly. However, you can look for cotton curtains that are treated to make them more water-resistant.
Hemp (a thick plant fiber) is yet another variety of natural material used to make shower curtains. One of its many advantages is that it is as mildew-resistant as vinyl; and as environment-friendly as cotton. Hemp naturally has antifungal and antibacterial properties, and hence, does not mildew easily. However, the only side effect of hemp is that it requires longer time to dry. Due to its absorbent properties, it tends to absorb water, and hence, needs extended drying.
The price of a shower curtain depends, exclusively, on the material used. While those made of vinyl and polyester are inexpensive, those made of natural materials like cotton and hemp are pricier. Fabric shower curtains require vinyl liners to protect them from mildew and stains. This may further increase the cost. But, mark it, fabric curtains definitely look more elegant and beautiful than vinyl.

Vinyl shower curtains based on themes are priced slightly higher than others. Due to availability of large number of designs and themes, you will surely find what you are looking for. If not, you can also customize one. Look out for manufacturers that make custom shower curtains, according to your specifications of color, material, design, etc. You can also look for designer label shower curtains.

Shower Curtain Designs
➡ Solid white and beige curtains are the most popular ones they match with most of the bathroom themes. Whereas, the second most common are polka-dotted ones.

➡ You can even opt for other solid colors like blue, green, maroon, black, violet, etc., as they are visually appealing and will also match / contrast your bathroom decor.

➡ If looking for shower curtains for kids' bathroom, then you can find the ones themed on popular cartoon characters, animals, cars, abstract art, etc.

➡ When it comes to themed shower curtains (usually of vinyl or polyester material), you will find that the aquatic theme is quite popular: with designs of droplets, fish, aquatic life, etc.

➡ Lastly, if you are looking for something unique, then try silhouette shower curtains. These are cool, intriguing, and will suit modern bathroom decor.

Shower screens are also, sometimes, used in place of shower curtains. However, they are expensive as compared to shower curtains. Secondly, curtains are more preferred as they are attractive and also easy to maintain and replace. With new styles and trends available, finding the perfect shower curtain to add some style to your shower, has become quite easier.

Deep Clean Bathroom Tips for all the forgotten areas

Read article : Deep Clean Bathroom Tips for all the forgotten areas

This post is sponsored by Dettol

I’ve shared recently how to create a shower cleaning kit, speed clean the bathroom and organise the bathroom cupboards, but there are so many other little areas in the bathroom that get neglected during the weekly bathroom cleaning routine.

<a href=Deep Clean Bathroom Tips" width="780" height="1560" />

Deep Clean Bathroom Tips

Below are a few deep cleaning bathroom tips for all the forgotten areas.

Plastic Shower curtain

It’s the worst when you jump into the shower and see dirt spots on the shower curtain, it can happen if the curtain doesn’t dry properly.

HOW TO CLEAN: Wipe over the curtain bottom of your curtain with a bathroom cleaner to remove any soap scum or dirt build up.  To freshen up the shower curtain pop the curtain in the wash with 2-3 bath towels (this will help prevent the curtain from crinkling too much in the machine) along with your regular detergent.  Then hang up to dry or check the label for washing instructions as you maybe able to put it in the dryer.

Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom

Dettol Healthy Clean range all help the home stay clean and hygienic.  The Healthy Clean Bathroom Spray is an easy effective everyday bathroom cleaner that can be used on bathroom surfaces such as sink & tiles, bath and counter tops, toilet seats, sealed wooden surfaces, glass surfaces, bins and floors, leaving the bathroom sparkling clean and kills 99.9% germs (E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus). Always read the label. Use only as directed.

Use Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom on all these tips to cut through dirt and soap scum to help keep your bathroom clean and hygienic with a fresh fragrance.

The sink drain

When brushing your teeth you’ll often see beyond the drain cover in the sink and see that it’s grotty.  In a regular clean, you would usually wipe over the top of the cover but just under the drain cover is usually a big build up of dirt, yuck!

HOW TO CLEAN: Get an old toothbrush and poke it into your sink drain cover, use this to help lift up the cover. Spray inside the drain and the drain cover with your bathroom cleaner, use the old toothbrush to help remove all the dirt. Once clean place cover back on.

Smelly Toilet

Whilst we clean the toilet seat and inside the bowl in a regular weekly bathroom clean, under the seat can often be forgotten, it an be a scary place, especially if you have boys as we know their aim can be terrible.

HOW TO CLEAN: Read how to clean a smelly toilet here. I’ve suggested natural products, but for those that don’t have the desire to make your own products, Dettol Healthy Clean Bathroom Spray can work wonders.

Shower Door Tracks

When cleaning the shower this area can often be neglected, which leads to a heavy build up.

HOW TO CLEAN: As the buildup is quite hard in this area your cleaning solution needs to sit on top to soften the area so you can easily remove the grime.  Spray area as required and allow to sit for 10 minutes.  Use a toothbrush to get into the hard to reach areas, then wipe over with a cloth.

Shower Head

Shower heads are prone to build up of mineral deposits, dust, dirt etc which affects the water pressure and spurts water out in all different directions.  Cleaning the shower head in your regular bathroom cleaning routine will help prevent the build up.

16 Ways To Deep Clean Your Bathroom - And Keep It Clean

Read article : 16 Ways To Deep Clean Your Bathroom - And Keep It Clean
Deep Clean Your Bathroom - And Keep It Clean!

If there were one room in the house you were to hate cleaning the most, it would be the bathroom. Somehow it just always seems a little dirty, yet it’s the room we clean ourselves up in. All the dirt just somehow manages to find a way to store up in the little nooks and crannies we often forget about, where it gets worse until you eventually do something about it.

With just a few household items and these helpful tips, you’ll be on your way to effectively deep cleaning your bathroom in no time.

1. Make shower grout sparkle again

With a baking soda and bleach concoction, a toothbrush, and some time to scrub, you’ll have immaculate shower grout in no time.

image

2. Easily get rid of stubborn mold in caulking

By soaking cotton balls in bleach, you can get rid of stubborn mold the easiest way possible. Simply set the cotton balls along the stained or moldy caulking, allow it to sit overnight, and presto!

3. Accomplish a clean jetted tub

You don’t need the help of dish detergent or harmful cleaners to clean the small crannies of tub jets. With just the help of a little baking soda, vinegar, and water, you can let it soak and easily scrub it with a toothbrush and towel.

4. Clean out the bath drain

Throwing some Draino in there is an easy, quick fix, but it doesn’t get down to the root of the problem. By cleaning out your drain the old-fashioned way, you can. All you’ll need is a few tools to disassemble the tub stopper, vinegar, and baking soda.

5. Create a spotless plastic shower curtain

Did you know a plastic shower curtain can be cleaned in the washing machine?! Just add one or two cups of white vinegar to the load and a couple of towels to avoid the shower curtain clustering together. Make sure to allow it to air dry as the plastic will melt in the dryer.

6. Say goodbye to deep stains in the sink

This will take a little more time, as it is a three-step process. But you don’t have to worry about scrubbing until your hands burn with the help of a product known as “Bar Keeper’s Friend.”

7. Fix a slow draining bathroom sink

If you have a U-shaped trap, you know just how easily grime, hair, and other crap builds up. To ensure your sink works better for a longer period of time, you can completely clean it out with the help of this tutorial.

8. Remove hard water buildup with ease

Forget about CLR or other cleaners that promise to remove hard water buildup. With a mixture of white vinegar, dish soap, and lemon juice, the grime will be gone in no time.

9. Keep the toilet clean all year without scrubbing

Try making your own DIY tablets to clean the toilet. All you need is citric acid from the canning aisle, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, vinegar, and any essential oil you prefer. PopSugar

10. Abolish hard-to-clean toilet rings

Did you know Kool-Aid actually contains citric acid that can break down grime and even hard water deposits?! Just sprinkle a little Kool-Aid (lemonade flavor only) around a toilet bowl, let it sit for a couple hours, and stubborn toilet rings are gone in no time.

11. Eliminate grout stains in the floor

To make your home look brand new again, a little powdered oxygen bleach and water can go a long way. Scrub the mixture into the floor, and watch it transform.

12. Make your own floor cleaner

Not only do store bought floor cleaners smell like chemicals, they don’t always clean as well as we’d like them to. You can make your own that will leave your floors in squeaky clean condition by mixing equal parts vinegar, water, and rubbing alcohol with a few drops of liquid dish soap. It will cut through grease easily, and you can even personalize it by adding your favorite essential oils to aid in the process and make your house smell wonderful. Tea tree oil, for example, is great for disinfecting.

13. Don’t forget to clean the bathroom exhaust fan

As one of the most neglected things probably in your entire home, it needs a good cleaning from time to time too. Because you’re taking the cover off to clean the entire fan, make sure you turn off the breaker to make sure you don’t accidently shock yourself. You can find a full tutorial here.

14. Rejuvenate your bathroom storage cabinet

Whether you have a cabinet under your sink, or on the other side of the room, go through your bathroom storage area. Consolidate products, get rid of anything you don’t use or need, clean it out, and add a shelf liner. You can make it more productive and organized by adding baskets, hooks, or a lazy susan.

image

15. Disinfect your toilet plunger often

After uses, rinse off the plunger by flushing the toilet a few times. Then, mix dish soap with bleach directly in the toilet, swishing the plunger around in the mixture. Your toilet and plunger can all be cleaned at the same time.

16. Remember to clean the toilet brush too

If you think about it, the toilet brush is probably one of the dirtiest things in your bathroom. Combine hot water with two caps of bleach, let the brush soak for an hour, and then rinse it off with hot water.

Vienna hotel room with open bathroom (no shower curtain) - Austria Forum

Read article : Vienna hotel room with open bathroom (no shower curtain) - Austria Forum

1. Re: Vienna hotel room with open bathroom (no shower curtain)

I always go for a hotel with a shower because I don't like lying in a tub (like a pig in a wallow!) but I haven't encountered any Viennese hotels that offer showers with a shower curtain.

Most of the mid-range hotels I've stayed in seem to have shower cubicles with sliding or folding glass or plastic doors. Some are more roomy than others! If you have a shower over a bath, you often have this glass panel thingy which folds back if you want to use the tub, but which can be opened out to form a wall when using the shower.

I have no idea of the technical term for these panel thingies, but I think if you got a room with a shower over a bathtub, you would be likely to get something like this.

I've encountered this sort of bathroom in Hotel Alma (www.hotelalma.com) and Hotel Pertschy (www.pertschy.com). Alma has very swishy modern bathrooms. Some rooms have the tub with shower over and the glass panel, and other rooms have spacious shower boxes, with glass doors. Pertschy has tubs with showers in the superior rooms, I believe, and smallish glass shower boxes in the standard rooms. If you explained what you want I am sure they could provide you with a suitable room.

What should I do to make my bathroom stay clean and smell nice?

@SavvyCleaner by Angela Brown

Clean doesn't have a smell - but if we can keep the bathroom from smelling bad, it will be nice.

Of course you can use an Air Wick scented plug in and that will keep the bathroom always smelling nice.

Now for the bathroom cleaning:

The bathroom is the most used room of the house. Everybody who lives there will go in the bathroom several times a day for various reasons. There are different areas of the bathroom that are going to take a beating that you can't ignore.

The toilet, the sink, and the bathtub or shower are all used every day. You'll need to wipe them or rinse them down daily to keep germs and bacteria at bay.

A shower head on a hose is a great investment, you can use it to clean yourself and your bathtub. After your shower, use hot water to rinse down the shower walls, floor and glass doors or shower curtain. You can let them drip dry.

If your plastic shower curtain is nasty, toss it in the washing machine with 1 cup of white vinegar and run for a cycle. Hang it back up and let it drip dry in the shower.

If you have soap scum on the glass shower doors, get a sponge - squeegee combination and hang it in your shower. Keep a pump bottle of Dawn Dish soap in your shower. Once a week, after your shower when the walls are wet, use dish soap on the sponge and wash the shower walls and glass. Rinse with your shower head on a hose. Squeegee dry with the other side of the sponge - squeegee.

The doorknobs on the bathroom doors, cupboards, drawers and medicine cabinet all collect germs. Wipe them down a couple of times a week - and more often if you've been sick.

The mirrors catch toothpaste specs, and fly-away hairspray. Keep a bottle of multi-purpose cleaner under the sink with a roll of paper towels. Clean up the mirrors and vanity after brushing your teeth before bed each night. You'll find waking up to a clean space in the morning makes getting ready for work or school so much nicer.

If you use the ceiling fan in your bathroom, you'll collect lots of dust and then it will blow all over the bathroom. Plan to vacuum the floor at least once a week using a vacuum with a hose attachment. The baseboards will collect dust, hair, bugs and toenail clippings. Bathrooms because they are warm and damp seem to attract bugs and spiders. While vacuuming, look for, and vacuum up cobwebs while vacuuming the dust.

Empty the trash when needed even it it's not garbage day. Having an empty garbage to toss stuff in encourages throwing garbage away.

Pull out all the shampoo bottles from under the sink and linen closet and put them in the shower. You won't use almost empty shampoo bottles if they are hiding under your sink. When the bottles are empty, toss them. Do not buy more shampoo, conditioner or shaving cream, until all your other almost empty bottles are gone.

Follow these simple steps to keep your bathroom clean and tidy. You'll find a clean bathroom is an inviting space.

Make Your Bathrooms Inspiring With Beautiful Shower Enclosures and Frosted Glass

When designing a home most individuals focus on comfort and style.

The home is an extension of the resident’s personality and needs to project their personal style.

It is also the space one seeks maximum comfort in to relax after a long day. While a lot of people focus extensively on bedrooms and living rooms to balance these two concerns, they often forget about the bathroom.

The bathroom is an important part of one’s house but is often dismissed with the same structure.

However, with modern innovations in the field of design, there are now several stylistic options that can transform your bathroom and enhance its beauty.

One such revolution has been caused by toughened glass solutions that are aesthetic and resilient, making it the perfect element for a bathroom.

Luxurious shower enclosures

image

A common concern in many bathrooms can be seen in the shower area.

Most bathrooms have a shower curtain separating the two units which is hardly adequate to limit water spills.

Further, soon after it has been fitted, even the finest shower curtain turns wrinkly and spotty giving your bathroom an old and unkempt look.

Also, with the water spilling into the rest of the bathroom, there is a constant messy look that isn’t very appealing.

Instead with a glass shower enclosure now even your bathroom can look like a luxurious hotel style space.

These modern enclosures work wonderfully to enclose the shower area while also adding style and glamour to the space.

Further, due to the reflective properties of glass, it can make even a small bathroom look bigger and more open.

Clean and mess free

A major benefit with a material like glass in the bathroom is also its ease of maintenance.

Any water droplets on the glass can simply be wiped down by a squeegee or soft cloth to leave it sparkling and clean for years to come.

Also with modern enclosures that are fitted well, one never has to worry about water spills in any other section of the bathroom.

Privacy and artistic solutions for every individual

image

Along with style and glamour, a bathroom also mandates privacy solutions. With modern glass, this can be achieved in a classy manner easily.

Frosted glass doors on the shower enclosure are among the most popular solution to accommodate privacy with good aesthetics.

This obscure and cloudy glass solution works wonders to block the view while still allowing for slight transmission of light.

Thus, the unit stays completely private while also maintaining the reflective brilliance of glass.

For the artistic individual, one can also opt for a unique pattern or design on the glass as well.

An intricate design can add creativity to the space while also blocking the view.

Sturdy shelves for all your products

image

Along with a good shower enclosure, individuals also need space to place all their products.

Options like wood and metal aren’t the best idea as they can rot and corrode at an extremely fast pace while also increasing the risk for termites and bacterial infestation.

Further, plastic trays or something similar can ruin the aesthetics of the whole space.

Instead, residents can opt for colourful and durable glass shelves made from lacquered glass.

This stylistic solution works wonders as shelves, cabinet doors or even counters for all your bathroom essentials.

Further, it is highly durable and resilient and doesn’t get affected by the heat and humidity in the bathroom.

With these innovative glass solutions individuals can completely transform how their bathroom is structured and maintained.

No longer does one have to wait for a vacation and hotel stay to experience a magnificent bathroom with stylish shower enclosure, but can enjoy them in the comfort of their home.

For individuals concerned with safety in association with glass solutions, modern advances take care of that too.

All these solutions are made from toughened or tempered safety glass that is five times stronger than regular glass.

The manufacturing process involved in creating these solutions changes the internal chemistry of the glass solution rendering far more durable and resilient to impact.

A leading glass supplier in your city will be able to provide you with additional details on these products as well as help you pick the perfect solutions to uplift your bathroom.

a continuing saga of inadequacy

Read article : a continuing saga of inadequacy

J R Soc Med. 2004 May; 97(5): 235–237.

Abstract

Previous surveys of UK hospitals have highlighted many deficiencies in the standards of hospital inpatient washing and bathing facilities—especially inadequate access for wheelchair users, insufficient bathing equipment, and unsatisfactory cleanliness and privacy. We conducted a qualitative survey in three hospitals in the North of England to see whether these facilities have improved.

There have been some improvements, particularly in the provision of bath hoists, adapted taps, alarm call systems, shower seats and wheelchair access to bathrooms. But many basic problems remain—absent locks and signs, inadequate heating, poor standards of privacy, insufficient bath aids, wet floors, and the inappropriate use of bathrooms as store rooms.

The overall condition of hospital bathrooms and showers remains unsatisfactory. Too many hospital bathrooms are austere, cold, smelly and poorly maintained.

INTRODUCTION

Bathing is an important activity of daily living and should be a pleasurable experience. Helping a patient to maintain personal hygiene is a fundamental aspect of nursing care but bathing of disabled and elderly people can be difficult and time consuming.1-3 If inadequate aids, equipment and facilities compound the difficulty, the process can become arduous for busy ward staff. Adequate and suitable washing and bathing facilities can help to ensure that patients are bathed in private and with dignity.

The last detailed survey of bathing facilities in a UK hospital was over 20 years ago.4 Conducted in the same region as the present study but at a different hospital, it revealed a generally poor standard of inpatient washing, bathing and toilet facilities, with insufficient equipment, especially bathing aids. It also highlighted poor access and inadequate adaptations for wheelchair users. The authors made recommendations for improvements.

Two large UK multicentre hospital surveys5,6 yielded comparable findings. The King's Fund questionnaire of patients in ten hospitals indicated that no patient was happy with the number of bathrooms or washbasins and that most were critical of standards of cleanliness. The Health Advisory Service survey of eight English hospitals commented on the poverty of the physical environment and shortcomings in bathroom cleanliness, access, equipment, upkeep, comfort, and privacy. We have looked at hospital bathing, washing and showering facilities to see if matters have improved.

METHOD

Two of us (AM and ST [see acknowledgment]) visited 46 hospital wards in three different hospitals in the North of England—a large teaching hospital, a smaller satellite hospital attached to the teaching hospital (mainly comprising specialist elderly rehabilitation wards), and a small district general hospital in a neighbouring city. All adult medical, surgical, and orthopaedic wards were assessed. Intensive care units, high dependency units, and psychiatric, and paediatric wards were not. We inspected all bathrooms and showers and recorded their physical characteristics on a checklist. We documented and compared details of door widths, height of light switches, accessibility for wheelchair occupants, alarm call systems, bathtub characteristics, bath aids, heating, floor surfaces, mirror height, sink accessibility, easy use of taps, privacy, and cleanliness.

RESULTS

The number of patients on each ward varied from 10 to 32, average 25. The total number of patients on all 46 wards was 1167. The proportion of physically disabled patients on wards varied from 12% to 100%, average 72%. For the purposes of this study, we defined physically disabled patients as those who needed any degree of assistance with washing or bathing while in hospital (this was determined by the ward nursing staff).

General features

All bathrooms and showers had a functioning alarm call system.

On 9 of the wards, there was no sign on the bathroom or shower door indicating the room's use. On 5 wards there was no lock on the bathroom or shower door. On 9 wards, the bathroom or shower room lacked privacy: for example, having only a small curtain or ‘concertina’ door separating the shower from the open ward; bathroom doors with large ‘peep holes’ or with large ‘see-through’ glass panels covered only by a small curtain. In one case, a paper towel was taped across the glass panel in place of a curtain. In another ward the bathroom was being used simultaneously as a toilet, with two patients using the room at one time (one in the bath, one on the toilet), separated only by a curtain.

The width of all bathroom doorways was above the minimum recommended (80 cm) to allow access for a wheelchair. However, on 13 (28%) wards, doorway width was less than 93 cm, the preferred width for wheelchair access. 8 wards had no heating in the bathroom. On 3 wards the light switch was too high to be accessible for someone seated or in a wheelchair.

In most bathrooms and shower rooms the decor was plain, uninspiring blue or green gloss paint (‘like a bad campsite washroom’ was one nurse's comment). At the time of inspection, bathrooms or shower rooms on 12 wards were considered unclean on subjective inspection. A recurrent finding was that the room smelled of urine. In some, the floor was wet and potentially hazardous. The standard arrangement was for one of the domestic staff to clean the bathroom and shower once daily. At all other times—and between baths and showers—this responsibility fell to the ward nurses.

Bathtubs and bath aids

The number of bathtubs per patient varied from 1 in 6 to 1 in 28. All wards had at least one bath, most had two. 12 wards had baths that were not free-standing, so carers were unable to get around both sides (though most of these wards also had another bath which was free-standing). Two free-standing baths had a shower obscuring one side, which blocked access for carers.

45 of 46 wards had a bath hoist (ambulift), 19 (41%) had bath rails, 10 (22%) had a bath seat, 20 (4%) had non-slip mats (now less favoured because of the theoretical risk of infection spread), 2 (4%) had a bath board. 19 (41%) had ‘easy to use’ or adapted taps (i.e. easier to turn on and off for patients with dexterity problems). 6 bathrooms also contained a bidet; few of these worked and all were unused. Most bathrooms were cluttered—sometimes almost full—with non-bathroom-essential ward objects such as mattresses, commodes, and weighing machines. In some cases, these impeded access to the bath.

Showers

Most wards had two separate showers, 16 had only one. 10% (7/73) of showers were either broken or not working. A recurring problem was water seeping under the door into the main ward, in one case dripping down through the ceiling to the floor below. Some of these had been awaiting repair for several months with no obvious indication that this would occur in the near future. This was a source of frustration to the nursing staff.

Only 33 (72%) wards had showers that were accessible to wheelchair users. Some had a large step up to the shower, others were too cramped, making manoeuvrability impossible. 82% (60/73) of showers had a shower seat, generally a simple plastic chair borrowed from the main ward.

Washbasins

Most washbasins were of a suitable height for those needing to sit and wash, and legroom was adequate. Taps were adapted or easy to use on 34 (72%) wards. 11% (10/90) of bathrooms had no mirror and 39% (31/80) of mirrors were > 130 cm off the ground (not easily accessible for someone seated or in a wheelchair).

DISCUSSION

72% of hospital inpatients in this study needed some assistance with washing and bathing. Since the previous study in 1982,4 improvement has occurred in wheelchair accessibility to bathrooms but not showers, and in access to washbasins (direct comparison is not possible, since the studies were done in different hospitals). The provision of alarms is now standard, and the use of bath hoists and showers is almost universal. Many taps are now easy to use. But little else has changed. We found identical themes to the previous surveys.5,6 The main deficiencies, as before, are limited accessibility of showers for wheelchair users, a paucity of bath aids and adaptations, concerns about cleanliness and lack of privacy. Other inadequacies include: poor signage, missing locks, lack of heating, unimaginative decor, unpleasant smells, wet floors, obstructive clutter, raised shower thresholds, mirrors and switches that are too high, and delayed repairs. This study was of 46 wards in three hospitals in one English region. Surveys of hospitals elsewhere are needed to show whether our findings are generalizeable: we suspect that the inadequate state of hospital bathing facilities is a widespread phenomenon.

It is of concern that many of our findings are similar to those of the King's Fund patient survey performed in 1966.5 The Department of Health survey in 19986 raised similar criticisms, and made many recommendations for action to be taken. However, in the hospitals that we studied we found little evidence of improvement. Overall, there were few changes from the situation encountered more than 35 years ago.

These findings should be placed in context. On most wards, facilities for washing and bathing were adequate and there were several other positive findings. For example, all rooms had functioning alarm call systems and light switches that worked. With one exception, all wards had a bath hoist, the most important bathroom aid for disabled patients. But many shortcomings persist. Few wards had a full set of simple bath aids. Mirrors should be lowered or enlarged to make washing, shaving and grooming easier for those who need to sit for this activity. All taps should be adapted for easier use. Wheelchair access to showers should be improved. Repairs to broken bath and showering equipment could be done much more quickly. More consideration might also be given to improving the decor, privacy, cleanliness, and general environment of these rooms, helping to make washing and bathing a more dignified, pleasurable and relaxing experience for all involved.

There is limited space on hospital wards, and bathrooms are commonly used inappropriately as store rooms. There should be alternative areas to store ward equipment, freeing the bathrooms for their proper use. Having to share the same bathroom with another person (fortunately, only one instance seen) is particularly unsatisfactory.

The recommended standards for disabled people using hospital say little about bathrooms and showers.7 Measures to improve overall quality of care, privacy, and facilities in hospital are in the National Service Framework for Older People8 but at present there are no comprehensive guidelines or national standards. Most of the improvements required would be inexpensive. Hospital managers, doctors, and modern matrons should focus on these important deficiencies in the bathing facilities of most hospital wards. Perhaps a designated member of staff (such as an occupational therapist) could ensure that washing and bathing facilities are adequate and act as patient advocate. It might be a good idea to make bathroom standards a key factor in government star ratings of hospitals. The aim should be to provide bathing facilities that we would be happy to use ourselves.

8 Hidden Hazards Lurking in Your Bathroom

Read article : 8 Hidden Hazards Lurking in Your Bathroom

In 2008, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reported that 235,000 Americans are admitted to emergency rooms with bathroom related injuries every year. What’s more outstanding is that 14% of people were actually hospitalized.

While some bathroom hazards may be obvious, there are many hidden ones you may not be aware of. I have identified 8 such bathroom hazards, and have provided solutions to ensure you don’t become the next embarrassing statistic.

bathroom hazards

8 Hidden Bathroom Hazards You May Not Be Aware Of

1. Using the Toilet

The CDC found that 14% of all bathroom related injuries were a direct result of using the toilet. In fact, people over 85 actually suffered over half of their injuries near the toilet.

Solution: Make sure you have a grab rail installed near your toilet.

2. Dirty Shower Heads

In 2009, researchers at The University of Colorado found 30% of shower heads contained the mycobacterium avium which has been linked to tuberculosis. Probably the most horrific case linked to shower heads occurred in 1976 with the fatal outbreak of Legionnaires‘ disease in America.

Solution: As the slime that builds-up inside the shower head can protect germs, make sure you clean it regularly.

Interestingly, the Colorado study found metal shower heads had fewer pathogens than plastic ones; so switch to a metal one and look for one with a filter that you can change regularly.

3. Flushing the Toilet

As one might expect, toilet water will contain bacteria from urine and faeces which can carry e-coli; when you flush a toilet, therefore, tiny droplets can disperse onto your bathroom. This is only an issue for items located close to your toilet, but as this will often include toothbrushes and soap it is not a very attractive thought.

Solution: Always flush with the lid down!

4. Mold, Glorious Mold

Mold produces allergens, irritants and has the potential to cause health problems, with the most common mold found in bathrooms being stachybotrys: a black, sticky fungus which can cause asthma-like symptoms.

It relies on moisture and damp to develop, so poorly ventilated bathrooms can easily become breeding grounds. Given the right climate, mold can rapidly grow in 24-48 hours and you often won’t notice it until it becomes a large problem.

Solution: The solution is simple: no moisture = no mold.

If you have an extractor fan use this while you shower, and for up to 20 minutes after, as this will lower humidity. If you don’t have access to a fan, simply shower with the door slightly open and ensure you leave it wide open for 20 minutes after.

5. Damp Floors

It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that a wet floor will pose a potential health risk as it will increase the risk of falling. The two biggest causes of rogue wet floors are ill-fitted shower curtains and us, more specifically our wet feet.

Solution: In general, shower curtains are poor for protecting against water splashes; so ditch the curtain and invest in a sturdy bath screen.

6. Self-Inflicted Slippery Surfaces

This hazard is reserved solely for bath users and is a direct result of all the toiletries we use. These can be particularly slippery and can settle at the bottom of your bath, with bath oils being the main culprit.

The problem here is that you often won’t notice how slippery it is until you try to get up. This can prove to be a particularly menacing bathroom hazard for the elderly.

Solution: Install grab rails around your bath to give yourself something to hold onto when getting up.

You should also never step out onto a naked floor: invest in a skid-proof rug and some textured bathroom tiles with an uneven surface. Both of these will work together to provide your feet with something to grip onto.

7. Exiting the Bath

The CDC found that exiting the bath, or shower, causes the most dangers in the bathroom across all age groups. While only 2.2% of injuries involved entering, exiting was the cause 9.8% of injuries.

Solution: As with most tips, all you need to do is install grab rails.

8. Shattering Glass Screens

In 2009 the Consumer Products Safety Commission recorded nearly 2000 complaints made against shower doors which shattered as a result of being incorrectly installed.

Solution: Ensure a professional has fitted your shower door correctly.

Oh, and don’t forget to tell guests not to use the shower door as a leaning post!
