Drought Conditions Changing the Way Society Thinks About Water Infrastructure on Environmental XPRT

Read article : Drought Conditions Changing the Way Society Thinks About Water Infrastructure on Environmental XPRT

While proactive water conservation is a smart way for consumers to react to climate change, the crisis puts increased pressure on water utilities to better manage their resources and pipeline networks.

Change is in the air. One only needs to check the daily news to understand why climate change, drought and water infrastructure have become frequent buzzwords heard around the water cooler.

For residents of states that stretch from the Pacific Coast to across the southwestern United States, the summer of 2015 may go down in history as one of the driest seasons on record, with widespread restrictions on water usage.

This past spring California Governor Jerry Brown proclaimed mandatory water cutbacks for all residents. Calling this “perhaps the worst drought California has ever seen since records began being kept about 100 years ago,” the Governor ordered cities and towns to cut usage by as much as 36 percent.

With the stroke of a pen, the simple act of washing your car, watering your lawn or taking a shower instead of a bath has become a conscious decision. The repercussions of water restrictions are even changing kitchen habits for cooks, restaurants and food producers, and across the nation many water-thirsty crops are forcing consumers to pay higher prices at the grocery store.

Water supplies and delivery systems threatened

Population growth, drought and severe climate changes have resulted in declining reservoir and aquifer levels, threatening water supplies and delivery systems. The water level in Lake Mead, the largest drinking-water reservoir in the United States, has dropped so much that the city of Las Vegas agreed to spend US$800,000 to build a deeper 3-mile long intake pipe to address the problem for residents and visitors.

“We have to think differently,” said Michael Connor, the deputy secretary of the Interior Department. “It’s not enough just to conserve water. We have a lot of infrastructure, but a lot of it doesn’t work very well anymore. We need to undertake what amounts to a giant re-plumbing project across the West.”

Daunting challenges demand innovative solutions

Although there are no simple solutions, the crisis has given us ample opportunity to reconsider how we use water and what we can do to conserve, reuse and repair. And while proactive water conservation is a smart way for consumers to react, the crisis puts increased pressure on water utilities to better manage their resources and pipeline networks.

One of the biggest drivers for utilities is finding ways to reduce the loss of water from leaky pipes. According to the American Water Works Association, that loss can range between 14 to 18 percent, nationwide. When a state like California distributes an estimated 38 billion gallons a day, the savings potential is immense, from both a financial and resource standpoint.

Cutting edge leak detection technologies help preserve water

Pure Technologies, a world leader in infrastructure management, has been helping utilities and water authorities manage the life cycle of their pipeline assets for more than a decade.

To date Pure has assessed, analyzed and monitored more than 8,700 miles of pressurized pipeline, everything from distribution andtransmission mains delivering drinking water to wastewater pipelines carrying raw sewage.

Through our technical platforms and engineering services, Pure’scondition assessment technologies have helped clients prevent more than 2,300 failures worldwide, resulting in billions of dollars in savings, not to mention hundreds of billions of gallons in water savings. Pure has also located more than 4,000 leaks on water mains using our leak detection technologies.

Not surprising, the real job is just beginning, as society becomes acutely more aware of water issues.

You can’t manage what you don’t measure

Globally, utilities have come to value Pure’s expertise in helping them to sustainably manage their water networks using inspection as the cornerstone to understanding what needs to be addressed.

Getting a firm handle on water loss means taking a holistic approach. Utilities can effectively reduce their real water losses by completing regular leak detection in their distribution network using traditional leak detection tools, like correlators, combined with a transmission main leak detection program using inline tools that can accurately locate high-loss leaks.

Service providers such asWachs Water Services can also reduce water loss through a valve management program, which improves valve condition and location information for field staff. An effective valve program allows a utility to reduce their response time – and the associated water loss – when a pipe failure does occur.

Regular condition assessment of water mains can also identify pipes that are at risk of failure, and can effectively reduce failures that result in large water losses.

All this operational efficiency is going over well with stakeholders and a more informed public that appreciates sustainable efforts and has embraced singing shortersongs in the shower.

Bathroom Renovation & Design Checklist

Read article : Bathroom Renovation & Design Checklist

Whether it’s the ultimate retreat to soak away the day’s worries or the busiest room in the house, your bathroom should be functional, easy to clean and safe. Getting to that point with a bathroom renovation can be time-consuming, expensive and messy, but we have some tricks to help you.

It might cost you more to move the plumbing around, but it could make for a much better layout and even allow you to have a separate bath and shower. A three-way bathroom can have its walls opened up to create a large space, with more room to create the ultimate layout, while a narrow bathroom would benefit from the far end being taken up by the bath or shower.

Try to keep showers and baths furthest from the door. Keep toilets and vanities closest to the door, so any mess from a shower is kept away from the main traffic areas. Also consider the placement of the toilet; you don’t want it to be the first thing you see when you look through the bathroom door.

If moving a window to make way for a shower is not an option, work with it. Provided it is waterproofed properly, surrounded by tiles and features opaque or frosted glass, a window in a shower can be a great feature of the space.

The window is the star of the show in the bathroom of this [converted warehouse](http://www.homestolove.com.au/cosying-up-a-melbourne-warehouse-conversion-3653|target="_blank"). Photo: Armelle HabibThe window is the star of the show in the bathroom of this converted warehouse. Photo: Armelle Habib

Bathroom doors usually swing open against a wall, rendering the entire space around and behind the door useless. By moving the door into the centre of the wall and replacing it with a recessed sliding door, you can then use both sides of the door for utilities. This allows you to have a toilet on one side of the wall and a vanity on the other. It’s a good idea for small bathrooms as it makes the best use of the space available.

Tiny gaps between vanities and baths or between the vanity and the wall that won’t fit your hand or arm will be impossible to clean. They will trap dust and water almost straight away. Either make sure you leave enough space to get your arm in there or have no gap at all.

Give careful thought to which end of the shower you want to place your taps and showerscreen. If your screen is fixed, you want to make sure you have enough room to get into the shower without the vanity or other items getting in your way.

TIP

Make sure you have a clearance of at least 70cm from the front of the basin to the nearest wall. Leave at least 60cm in front of the toilet and about 20cm from either side of the toilet bowl.

Go grey for grout! White grout on floors will always look dirty. Choose a grey colour so any eventual discolouration will be disguised.

Stop the slip Natural stone tiles with a bit of texture are a little less slippery for the floor than smooth tiles, but give them a test at the store or in your home by spilling water on them and checking how slippery they are.

Clever showerscreens A fixed, frameless showerscreen is stylish, but screens that swivel are ideal if you have kids or a shower over the bath; the hinged style allows easy access to taps and bathing.

Tap troubles Avoid mixer taps in the shower or bath. They are so easy to bump or play with and can potentially cause burns so are not ideal for families with young children.

Big vs small The bigger the floor tile, the less grout you need to clean. They also look great with a smaller wall tile in a contrasting colour.

Keeping warm Heat lamps are a good affordable alternative to underfloor heating. They might not be the prettiest light choice, but they do keep a space warmer in winter.

Height matters Consider the height of the tallest person in your home when installing showerheads, especially if the shower is combined with a bath as the floor height will have risen considerably and you don’t want to be squatting down to shower.

Smart storage Recess shelves between the wall studs in showers for shampoo and conditioner, and above toilets for toilet roll storage – or just simply to style and make pretty with candles or greenery.

Now you've got the practicalities down pat, take a look at these beautiful bathrooms for some creative inspiration...

Discolored water will continue to flow from Potomac River | Environment

Read article : Discolored water will continue to flow from Potomac River | Environment

More Maryland residents will see yellow and brown water flow from kitchen taps, showers and washing machines over the next several weeks as discolored water makes its way from a Potomac River filtration plant into more homes and businesses, utility officials said.

Carla Reid, general manager of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), said the discolored water is safe to drink and use but called it “unacceptable” from “an aesthetic standpoint.” She said the problem stems from changes required in the disinfection process due to an unusually large amount of organic matter — decayed leaves, grass and other vegetation — that has washed into the Potomac during recent heavy rainstorms.

WSSC, which provides water and sewer services to 1.8 million people in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, said that as of Wednesday afternoon, it had received more than 730 complaints of discolored water since Aug. 8. That nine-day total compares with 200 complaints in a typical month.

So far, the problem has mostly affected areas closer to WSSC’s primary filtration plant on the Potomac in western Montgomery, including Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Rockville and Gaithersburg. However, with each passing day, officials said, the water will reach areas farther away, such as northern Montgomery and into Prince George’s.

The discoloration comes from higher-than-usual levels of a natural mineral called manganese. WSSC officials advise against washing clothes with the discolored water because it can stain laundry but say it is otherwise fine.

Manganese is regulated as a “secondary” aesthetic issue for odor and taste in drinking water but not as a public health concern, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“It’s an aesthetic issue that people have to understand, but it’s safe to consume,” said J.C. Langley, WSSC’s director of production. “We want people to understand that we take their safety very seriously.”

Even so, persuading customers to ignore the yuck factor might not be easy.

Mary Hills, of Potomac, said she’s had “yellowish-brown” water two days in the past week. She said she changed the water filter in her refrigerator and that her family is drinking more bottled water. She’s heard WSSC say the tap water is fine, but when brownish water filled her tub last week, she skipped the bath.

“It didn’t make sense to me that it’s clean if it’s discolored,” Hills said. “You don’t look at a tub full of brown water and want to take a bath in it.”

Paul Tibbits Jr., also of Potomac, said he’s still comfortable drinking water that’s passed through his refrigerator filter, even though he’s noticed discolored water in the bathtub twice over the past week. He said he’s accepted WSSC’s assurances that the water is safe, but he’d like some independent testing done as well.

“As the tub was filling up, the water just became darker and darker,” Tibbits said. “My daughter asked why she was taking a bath in brown water.”

WSSC officials say an unusually rainy summer has created a high and fast-flowing Potomac full of more grass, leaves and other organic matter than usual. Like other Washington-area water utilities, WSSC draws water from the Potomac before it disinfects it and sends it out to homes and businesses through pipes. Unlike other local utilities, however, WSSC relies on chlorine to disinfect the river water and control manganese levels.

The problem: When chlorine combines with organic matter, it produces “disinfection byproducts,” which the EPA regulates because of their potential for increasing cancer risks, according to the agency’s website. To limit such byproducts, WSSC officials said, they had to scale back the amount of chlorine they used starting Aug. 8. The lower levels of chlorine are still enough to kill bacteria but leave behind more discoloring manganese, officials said.

“We’ll always side with water quality over an aesthetic issue,” Langley said.

He said he expects that customers will see discolored water for several more weeks, depending on how long the heavy rains continue to carry vegetation into the Potomac.

“We’re asking our customers to be patient with us,” Langley said.

Manganese has been linked to neurological problems in children, but at levels more than 10 times higher than what WSSC is finding in its testing, officials said.

“There’s a big difference in the levels of manganese that cause health problems and what’s in our water,” said Jin Yeong Shin, WSSC’s water quality section manager.

Officials at the Washington Aqueduct, which serves the District of Columbia and the Falls Church area, and Fairfax Water, which serves much of Northern Virginia, said they’ve also seen more organic matter in the river but have had no problems with discolored water. Both said they use other treatment methods that have kept manganese in check.

Shin, WSSC’s water quality manager, said WSSC uses chlorine because it’s good at keeping water safe for long periods. Because WSSC’s distribution system is so large, he said, water can spend a couple of days to a week or so in pipes before reaching its destination.

WSSC’s other filtration plant, which draws water from the Patuxent River, hasn’t had any manganese problems because it has a reservoir that allows organic matter to settle before it reaches the plant, Shin said.

WSSC has had previous problems with manganese. In 2015, the utility received thousands of complaints about brown water. WSSC initially blamed the problem on winter road salt washing into the Potomac and later said the saltier water’s impact might have been exacerbated by the utility’s decades-old iron pipes, which hadn’t been regularly flushed in 15 years.

Northgate Crossing apartments await the expanding suburb of Wheeling

Read article : Northgate Crossing apartments await the expanding suburb of Wheeling

The long-anticipated Wheeling Town Center, a mixed-use activity hub on the south side of Dundee Road, is expected to break ground this fall. When completed a movie theater, restaurants and retailers will neighbor the 100-acre Heritage Park and aquatic center as well as a Metra train station.

Within walking distance on the north side of the road is Northgate Crossing apartments. The new 288-unit, low-rise rental community will be wrapping up its construction about the time the town center gets started.

"Wheeling isn't an area people think of right away, but it's up-and-coming," said Northgate Business Manager Jillion Volz. "We're just a little earlier than everything is popping up."

Northgate Crossing is being developed by Reva Development Partners and built by Kinzie Builders. Lincoln Property Residential is managing the community.

The residents, who began arriving late December, tend to be either young professionals or empty nesters. They are drawn to the corporate offices in the area, nearby North Shore attractions and easy access to highways and the train route.

The younger residents often are establishing themselves in careers before they buy a home while the older ones may have sold theirs, said Matt Nix, principal at Reva.

"We provide kind of a transitional housing option to or from a single-family home while people make their next housing decision," he said.

"Our price point is a little lower than that of the surrounding communities," Volz said.

Surrounded by a mature landscape, Northgate Crossing is set back from the traffic on Dundee Road. Nine three-story elevator buildings are interspersed amid a clubhouse and retention pond. Each building is entered via a secure foyer.

Six floor plans are offered: four with one bedroom and one bath, and two with two bedrooms and two baths. One of the one-bedroom plans also has a den.

Residents have a choice of two color combinations: white cabinetry with dark counters and flooring or espresso cabinets and medium-hued counters and flooring. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, in-unit clothes washers and dryers, window blinds, closet shelving systems and lever door handles are standard. Vinyl plank flooring and cream-colored carpeting is per plan. Bathrooms have white subway tile surrounds and ceramic tile floors. All units have either a patio or balcony.

The largest two-bedroom apartment is the 1,212-square-foot Edison. A second-floor model opens to a foyer with a built-in art niche on one side and a laundry closet on the other. A great room has spaces allocated for sitting, formal dining and food preparation. The U-shaped kitchen has breakfast seating along one counter. An alcove with upper and lower cabinets can serve as a dry bar or buffet and hutch combo.

The two bedrooms and baths are at opposite sides of the apartment. The master suite has walk-in and linen closets and a bath with oversized shower and comfort-height dual vanities. The second bath, which is adjacent to the guest bedroom, has an extra-deep tub.

A circular drive fronts the clubhouse, where lounge seating, flat-screen television, pool table, two-way fireplace and full kitchen invite residents to spend their leisure hours. A business center provides computers and printer. The 24-hour fitness center has cardio and weight-training equipment. The media room has an extra-large flat-screen TV and theater-style lounge chairs; it can be rented for private viewings. Wi-Fi is complimentary in the clubhouse and pool area.

Outdoor amenities include swimming pool and sun deck, locker rooms with showers, bocce ball court, grilling station, fire pit and dog park.

Northgate Crossing is pet-friendly, although restrictions apply. Three buildings are pet-free.

Should you live in an RV? Here’s why some young people are ditching homes for the nomadic life.

Read article : Should you live in an RV? Here’s why some young people are ditching homes for the nomadic life.

The days of living in the same home until you retire are becoming as outdated as that pair of denim jeggings stashed in the back of your closet. Some millennials are ditching the notion of the white picket fence altogether and opting instead for a home that will travel: better known as a recreational vehicle or “RV.”

To cut expenses — think, five-figures for a used RV versus six-figures for a home — and live less tethered to one city, young people are increasingly drawn to the “house on wheels” concept. The chance to take road trips without paying for hotel rooms and restaurant meals doesn’t hurt either.

RV ownership is at an all-time high, with more than 9 million households owning an RV as of April 2017, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. With ownership up 16% since 2001, buyers between the ages of 35 to 54 make up the largest share of owners.

What would prompt someone to reject the age-old tradition of home ownership? For Chris Trenschel and Tamara Murray, who moved out of their California condo and into a camper van, it was the desire for more meaningful life experiences. “We were dead inside,” Murray told Vice in February 2016. “Travel, learning about new cultures and meeting new people, having meaningful experiences — that’s what is important to us.” Like many millennials, Trenschel and Murray began working remotely so they could travel as much as possible.

Other young professionals have similar stories, where they had previously established what appeared to be the perfect life, only to discover that instead of owning possessions, the possessions owned them. Selling everything, finding remote work and purchasing a house on wheels, such as an RV, trailer or motor home, pushed the reset button on their lives and allowed them to embark on a new life adventure.

What are the upsides to buying an RV?

The movement to bypass or delay a traditional home purchase makes sense as millennials prefer experiences over things. Millennials “aren’t spending our money on cars, TVs and watches,” Taylor Smith, CEO and co-founder of employee benefits firm Blueboard told CNBC. “We’re renting scooters and touring Vietnam, rocking out at music festivals or hiking Machu Picchu.” In fact 78% of millennials in a 2014 Eventbrite poll said they would rather spend money on an experience rather than purchasing an item.

This includes young families like the Podlahová family, who purchased an RV so they could see the country from their RV. While the family lives in a condo in Foster City, California, Michelle Tsai Podlahová said in an interview they purchased their RV so they could continue to camp and enjoy nature with their two young sons.

“We decided to get one because we used to camp and hike before we had kids and still wanted to do it with them,” she said. “Camping is really difficult with little ones, but the RV allowed us to still be in nature, but with the added comfort of having our own bathroom, shower and being able to cook food.” Podlahová and her family love their RV so much, they decided to ditch a traditional Christmas this year and instead spend the holiday traveling the countryside with the kids in the RV.

What are the real costs of RV life?

Aside from the allure of travel, RV or mobile living can save you over $139,000 over 15 years, according to calculations from the travel site Wand’rly. First off, a used motorhome can be relatively affordable, with an average cost of about $35,000. But even a new RV would save you money.

Consider this example: You purchase a home for $343,000 (the average home price in 2015), which includes a monthly mortgage payment of $1,310, utilities at $240, property taxes at $150, insurance at $50 and homeowners association fees for about $300 per month. Over 15 years you end up paying around $437,600. (This estimate does not include gas or parking fees.)

Compare this expense to purchasing a new motorhome, which goes for about $122,000. Your monthly payments could be a little higher at $1,380, but you don't have to worry about utilities and property taxes. Insurance could run about $135 a month. Over 15 years, your total approximate expense is $297,900. That’s $139,700 less than you’d spend on your home.

For those interested in just using their RV for a vacation, you still save cash. A party of four traveling by plane, renting a car, eating meals in restaurants and staying in a hotel would spend about $4,045 for a seven-day trip, according to Recreation Vehicle Industry Association estimates. Travel by RV, on the other hand, can get your costs down to $2,035 for a seven-day vacation, for a savings of over $2,000. (This excludes the RV purchase price.)

Before you buy

While you can save money on travel and homeownership living in an RV, do your research before taking the plunge. Here are four key things to consider:

1. Rent before own

If you aren’t 100% sure RV life is for you, rent one for a period of time to see if you like it, Go RVing.com suggested. Typical rent prices can range from $50 to $450 per night for a newer motorhome, RV Share reported. This will also help you figure out which amenities are most important to you and how much you can afford.

2. Decide whether to buy new or used

While a used RV will be significantly less expensive, consider some of the same factors you might ponder if you were to purchase a new or used car. Before purchasing a used RV, consider depreciation, if the vehicle is under warranty and if you can spot any unknown damage, TripSavvy advised.

3. Have a parking spot

Unless you live in a suburban or rural area that allows you to park your RV in your driveway you’ll have to consider where to keep it when you aren’t traveling. RV parking spots can run anywhere from $50 up to $450 a month depending on the size of your RV and needs, Storage.com stated.

4. Factor in extra costs

Maintenance, gas and the sales tax on your initial purchase can all add up. Gas is surprisingly expensive since most RVs only get six to eight miles to the gallon. That means you could drop as much as $10,000 on a 20,000 mile trip around the country, Kiplinger estimated. Maintenance costs include $2,500 for tires, $1,700 to replace carpets, $182 for a new toilet and $120 to upgrade your thermostat, according to AxleAddict.com.

Is the nomadic life right for you?

After you’ve figured out the practical side, it’s time to do some soul searching on whether RV life is really what you want. Although you can save cash and travel, it’s wise to have a serious talk with your partner (and yourself) about whether life on the road is your true calling. Make sure you can deal with living in a small space without a large shoe closet and room for a lot of clothes and accessories, as well as put up with your partner's items or clutter.

No matter how fun it might sound to travel at the drop of a hat, it’s definitely not for everyone. “Trulia’s research shows that many millennials would rather live in a more traditional home and neighborhood,” Lynnette Bruno, Trulia’s real estate and lifestyle expert said in an email. “The inclination that we see among young adults to live in RVs, yurts, shipping containers, micro-apartments and tiny homes is more of a reflection of how hard it is to find and buy an affordable home in today’s market.”

Be realistic about the nuisances you may encounter. Those with olfactory issues may be put off by some smells that are amplified in a small space, plus you may have more mold and mildew than what you’d find in a regular home, the RV Nomads notes. You may also encounter noisy neighbors at some campgrounds, and you should be open to rotating through a variety of doctors, dentists and mechanics, since you’ll be moving a lot.

Bathroom Color Schemes and Accessories

Read article : Bathroom Color Schemes and Accessories

Traditionally, a bathroom in the simplest sense, was strictly meant to be a place where one could bathe, cleanse or attend nature's call. The bathroom, restroom, washroom, toilet, loo, water closet or any of the other names it is known by, was not a place where one spent a long time. So generally, while constructing a home, office or commercial building, expenses on designing the bathroom took a back seat. A bathroom usually had just the minimal facilities needed to finish one's business. Nothing fancy. In fact, it could be said that the bathroom was usually the most neglected and unaesthetic space, in a residential or commercial facility, where one would go primarily to attend nature's call or hurriedly have a shower... and get out fast!

However, with the awareness of the importance of hygiene (particularly in bathrooms) and the increasing demand for clean, hygienic and aesthetic utilities, the industry has responded with a flood of ideas and products to make the bathroom a place where one would like to literally spend hours, relaxing... luxuriating in a bathtub, with all sorts of fragrant bath oils or reading a book while your hair color sets onto your hair, or whatever. The range of new and beautiful bath and sanitation accessories, furniture especially designed for bathrooms with marvelous color schemes for the bathroom walls, etc., just take one's breath away. If you want a bathroom that is both efficient and elegant, here are some ideas that might help you.

Colors add life and can be therapeutic as well. Plain gray or white walls can be depressing, like being in a hospital, where the walls and tiles are usually sterile white. Colors can change our moods. Everyone likes to linger in rooms where the colors are fresh, soothing, revitalizing or trendy, while nobody likes to hang around in a room, or for that matter, any place, where the colors are either dull and dirty-looking or clash with one's auras. But one should know how to mix and match the colors, else the result could be disastrous! Imagine having tomato red walls with blue fittings, green curtains, orange tiles..and so on ..disastrous!

Bathroom color schemes apply not only to the walls, but to the overall look and feel of the bathroom. So, the color of the furniture and accessories like tiles, sinks, commodes, cabinets, fittings, even towels, rugs, and bathroom decorations also matter. Here are some basics to consider, when choosing colors for the bathroom.

Primary and Secondary Colors
Everyone knows about the primary (red, blue, yellow) and secondary colors (green, orange, purple). It is common knowledge that secondary colors are obtained when two primary colors are mixed. But do you know about tertiary colors? Tertiary colors are derived when a primary color is added to a secondary one, giving a different effect. Apart from these basic colors, there is a whole wide range of hues and tints or shades, to choose from. When white is added to a color, it produces a tint, and when black or gray is added, it produces a shade! To make it more complicated, nowadays you also have something that is called textured colors. All this might get confusing, so it's best to refer to a color wheel.

Color Wheel
Choose colors from a color wheel. A color wheel is a great aid in choosing the right color scheme for your bathroom. Analogous colors (colors which are next to each other on the color wheel) give a harmonious feel. Complementary colors (colors which are across each other on the color wheel) are contrasting colors, which when combined together, gives a jazzy and artistic look.

Colors and their Significance
Colors are said to have their own interpretations and are associated with different emotions. For example, green and yellow are generally seen as fresh and rejuvenating, being similar to the colors of nature, while red, purple and black are intense, mysterious and sensual colors. A shade of red and orange would give an earthy color, while tints of purple and blue (mauve, lilac and lavender) are soothing colors. Depending on what mood you want to create in your bathroom, you can go for colors related to it. If you want to feel revitalized and energetic, go for earthy red and orange colors. On the other hand, if you want to feel soothed and relaxed, go for tints of blue, green, yellow or mauve. If you like to project a sense of elegance and luxury, go for heavy colors. If you want your bathroom to express your creativity, go for an artistic splash of contrasting colors and out-of-the-ordinary designs.

In today's scenario, there are really no set rules. You can be as creative as you want, keeping in mind the basics. Another tip while thinking of a color scheme, is that light hues or colors give an illusion of space, so if your bathroom is not very roomy, you could consider this.

Bathroom accessories are basically the auxiliaries or add-ons that support the essentials. They range from your soap dishes to soap dispensers, glass shelves, robe hooks, grab rails, bathroom bins, towel rings, toilet brushes, toilet roll holders and more, to hold or keep in place all the essential things that are used in a bathroom. They also include the essentials, like showers, geysers, commodes, tiles, bathroom lighting and so on. They help to keep your bathroom systematic and easy to maintain. Guests using your bathroom will have no difficulty in locating soaps, shampoos, towels, etc., if the bathroom accessories are in place. There is no dearth of accessories for contemporary bathrooms. They come in all sizes, shapes, colors and designs. All you have to do is to get them.

So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and color your bathroom with a color scheme that is pleasing to the eye and the soul, and fill it with aesthetic and efficient accessories, to make your bathroom, a place of relaxation and refuge.

4 FAQs About Portable Shower Rentals - Rent-A-Can - Anchorage

Read article : 4 FAQs About Portable Shower Rentals - Rent-A-Can - Anchorage

Portable facilities have come a long way. Today, there are options to suit any budget or event, including portable shower rentals. Rent-A-Can in Eagle River, AK, specializes in providing clean, convenient facilities anywhere you need them. To help you understand the value of portable showers, they answer a few commonly asked questions.

4 FAQs About Portable Shower Rentals

What Are They?

portable showerPortable shower rentals are portable bathroom trailers outfitted with showers that can be towed to any site with limited facilities. They’re popular for construction, disaster relief, or events held far off the beaten path. With a portable shower unit, any of Alaska’s beautiful landscapes can become a fully functioning event space.

How Do They Work?

Portable showers work similarly to RVs. They can hook up to outlets and a water spigot if utilities are available. If not, many units come with generators and water reservoirs; however, shower usage will be more limited.

How Many Showers Are Available?

There are many models available to rent, from single shower stall units to trailers with eight or even 16 shower stalls. Most have shower stalls with separate changing areas, and many have toilets as well. When renting a larger model, ask how many showers can operate at one time.

Are There Different Types of Showers?

Portable shower rentals come in a variety of models suitable for any need. For example, there are ADA compliant models with wheelchair accessible stalls and restrooms. Another option is a decontamination shower, which also comes with a separate eye-wash station.

If you need a portable shower rental for your Alaska job site or event, let Rent-A-Can provide the facilities. They also offer portable sinks and porta potties. Give them a call at (907) 694-9202 to speak with a representative and visit their website for more information.

Fitting in fitness easy at Village Green

Read article : Fitting in fitness easy at Village Green

February 05, 2006|By Annemarie Mannion, Tribune staff reporter

Does swimming against a current sound like what you need? How about working up a sweat on an indoor racquetball court?

If achieving fitness was your New Year's resolution, Village Green at Seven Bridges in Woodridge can help you.

This 252-unit apartment development offers several fitness amenities, including an indoor resistance pool, outdoor swimming pool, racquetball court, exercise room with treadmills, weight room with machines and free weights, and Pilates classes.

Golf enthusiasts have access to an outdoor putting green and Seven Bridges Golf Course, where residents get a 20 percent discount on course fees. Seven Bridges Ice Arena and Edward Hospital's Medical Fitness Center are also nearby.

When you're ready to soothe overworked muscles, Village Green has a whirlpool and sauna.

The community has 10 three-story elevator buildings with red brick and gray vinyl-sided exteriors. Though the complex was built only eight years ago, the fir trees, bushes and other landscaping are nearly mature and provide a nice backdrop to the buildings.

Even more attractive is the view from the three-bedroom unit we toured, which can double as a two-bedroom with den.

The front door opens into a beige carpeted entry hall with a double coat closet on the left.

A gas-burning fireplace flanked by two windows highlights the 12-by-16-foot living room. The fireplace has a ceramic tile hearth.

An island with a white countertop separates the living room from the kitchen. With white cabinets, a dishwasher and room for a dinette set, the kitchen makes preparing meals easy. A door on one side of the kitchen encloses a closet where there's a full-size washer and dryer.

The 15-by-11 foot dining room is next to the living room. It's large enough to hold a dining set for six. A sliding glass door opens to a patio.

With a bay window in the 11-by-15 foot master bedroom, you could soak up the sun or enjoy the view of the lake and green at the golf course. The beige-carpeted room includes a bathroom and walk-in closet.

The bathroom has a glass-enclosed shower, linen closet and white vanity.

Another bathroom and two bedrooms are on the other side of the dining room. The second bathroom has a soaking tub instead of a shower. In addition to a door from the dining room, it has another door that leads to a bedroom.

This 11-by-13-foot bedroom is illuminated by a huge window with a view to the west of the lawn and a barbecue pit that residents can use in the summer. This bedroom also has a walk-in closet.

The third bedroom, a 12-by-11 foot space, could serve as a bedroom, nursery or den. It is separated from the dining room by a French door. Two small windows are high on the wall, providing natural light. A double closet offers ample storage space.

The complex is served by a PACE bus, which takes commuters to a train station in Lisle, about a five-minute drive from the property. It is also a short drive to Interstate Highway 355.

Rents range from $795 to $870 for a studio; from $895 to $990 for a one-bedroom; from $1,100 to $1,190 for a one bedroom with den; from $1,020 to $1,120 for a two bedroom, one bath; from $1,190 to $1,300 for a two bedroom, two bath; and from $1,440 to $1,675 for a three-bedroom, two-bath unit.
