Anti-bathroom bill campaign ‘launches’ gendered products ‘for a Bathroom Bill World’

An anti-bathroom bill group has launched a biting campaign against the Texas bathroom bill legislation which would see transgender people forced to use bathrooms that do not correspond to their gender identity.

“Lifestyle Products for a Bathroom Bill World” is a fake shop that offers products in “gendered” colours with pockets for birth certificates to be slipped into.

The products include phone cases, back packs and lunch boxes.

GSD&M created the campaign which mocks the notion that trans people should be forced to use the incorrect bathrooms.

Duff Stewart, the CEO of the ad agency, said that Texas had already wasted money on launching a special legislative session to try and pass the anti-trans law and should not continue to waste money.

Stewart said: “Taxpayer dollars should be spent solving the real problems that face our state, from infrastructure to education, child protective services and more.

“We have an imperative to support basic human rights and legislation that limits the freedoms of our transgender community is nothing more than a solution in search of a problem.”

The CEO added that his group would continue to fight for equality in Texas.

“I’m not worried about the people who love. I’m worried about the people who hate. GSD&M will always stand up for equality, and protect and support the community we’ve called home for 46 years,” Stewart added.

Senate Bill 3 (SB 3) is identical to anti-trans legislation in North Carolina.

Senate Bill 91 was passed. The two pieces of legislature are almost identical.

It was passed despite ten hours of testimonies from people opposing it.

Those who testified explained that the Bill was likely to have a negative impact on mental health and that suicide rates may go up among the trans community if their rights were rolled back.

A Republican Senator who supported the bill, Craig Estes, said that the Bill would not be at fault if this were the case.

“I’m hearing that it’s somehow our fault that people are committing suicide. Another explanation could be that people are depressed,” he said.

He added that he is sure that “it would be depressing to be trying to figure out which gender you are,” but that suicide rates could not be solely accounted to that.

SB 6 was a similar bill that was passed earlier this year in the Senate, but it failed in the house.

Senator Lois Kolkhorst, who authored all three pieces of legislature, said in the opening of the hearing for SB 3 that it was a “Texan tradition” to “take care of these issues”.

Business owners in Texas have condemned the Bill and the financial impact that it may have as HB2 cost North Carolina more than $3.76 billion.

What’s standard procedure for bathroom tile regrout?

Read article : What’s standard procedure for bathroom tile regrout?

Q. I hired a contractor to acid wash, regrout and seal my bathroom tile. He did not remove the old grout – merely sponged over a new grout coating. He says this is standard operating procedure, as we did not contract for old grout removal. Is this true, or did I just get ripped off?

A.Unfortunately, there are a number of contractors who regrout tile this way, even though it is not a recommended or reliable solution. People in the industry refer to this practice as “skim coating.” It’s a way of making the area look better without actually fixing it, and the new grout will wear off once the area is used.

While you can leave a small portion of the old grout, you need to remove a majority of it. That way, there’s enough room for the new tile grout to bond to the sides – not the top – of the tile. Even if the grout is worn down in areas, you need someone to remove it before applying new grout.

Luckily, regrouting tile is a practice you shouldn’t have to do often. If you take care of and clean your tile grout regularly, you should only have to replace it every 12 to 15 years. Lesser quality jobs or failure to care for the grout may lead to the need for replacement every eight to 10 years.

To get the maximum amount of time between grout replacement, be sure to care for it properly.

Never use bleach, ammonia or acid-based cleaners on grout. Shower cleaners that indicate you should spray the cleaner on and leave it there also damage grout long-term. Use a neutral pH cleaner if you want to get more life out of your grout.

You should also make sure to remove any excess moisture from the room, as that can damage grout. Squeegee your shower after use, and make sure to use exhaust fans to remove moisture.

When it comes to regrouting tile, know what it should cost. Low-priced estimates may indicate the contractor doesn’t offer old grout removal as part of the job.

Non-sanded grout typically costs between $5 and $6 per square foot for removal and replacement. Sanded grout, which would be used for any joints with a one-eighth inch gap or larger, costs $6 to $8 per square foot. Cost can vary depending on the size of the area, the type of tile used or the difficulty of the job.

Keep in mind that whoever is replacing your grout should also be placing 100 percent silicone caulk in corner joints and around tubs and shower basins. This step is important, because grout has no flexibility. If there’s any movement between a tile and a corner joint, grout will crack.

How to Convert a Dual Valve to a Single Mixer Shower Fixture | Home Guides

Read article : How to Convert a Dual Valve to a Single Mixer Shower Fixture | Home Guides
Converting to a single-mixer shower valve can be done without a major remodel of the bath.

Converting to a single-mixer shower valve can be done without a major remodel of the bath.

A two-handle shower faucet is installed through two small holes in the shower wall, and a single-lever faucet requires a single larger hole in the shower wall. When replacing a two-valve faucet with a single-mixer faucet, you are left with the challenge of the two existing holes from the old faucet. You will need to repair the wall to cover the two holes from the old faucet or use a repair escutcheon plate to cover all three holes.

Turn off the water supply to the shower faucet; this may require turning off all the water to the house. Remove the handles from the dual-valve faucet. Remove the escutcheon plates from behind the faucet handles. Remove the shower head by turning it counterclockwise.

Remove the access panel on the back side of the shower behind the faucet area. If an access panel doesn't exist, open the wall on the back side of the shower by cutting the drywall with a utility knife. Open the wall directly behind the existing shower faucet. Make the hole at least 12 inches square; you can increase the size later if needed for more working space. Locate the water pipes that supply the shower faucet.

Disconnect the pipes from the two-valve faucet. If the pipes are galvanized steel, unscrew the union nuts that join the faucet and pipes. If the pipes are copper, use a copper tubing cutter to cut the pipes about 6 to 12 inches away from the faucet. If the pipes are plastic, use plastic pipe cutting snips or a hack saw. Do the same with the pipe that supplies the shower head. Remove the faucet from the wall.

Attach short pieces of new pipe, 6 to 12 inches long, to the new faucet. Use the type of pipe your new faucet requires. If it's copper, you will need to solder the pieces into the faucet. If it has threaded connections, you can use male adapters that will transition to the type of pipe you want to use -- copper; chlorinated polyvinyl chloride plastic, or CPVC; or PEX, a flexible type of plastic tubing. Some faucets will have a tub spout port. Plug this port by installing a 3- to 6-inch piece of pipe with a cap on the end.

Place a mark on the front of the shower wall where the new faucet will be centered. This location should be directly between the two existing holes of the old dual-valve faucet. Check the installation specifications that come with the faucet for the proper size of hole necessary for the new faucet to fit through the wall; it should be about a 5-inch diameter hole. Use a power drill and hole saw to drill the hole.

Place the new faucet in the hole that you drilled. Hang the new faucet securely in place by nailing supporting pieces of wood braces between the framing studs and using plumbing support straps to attach the faucet and pipes to the wood braces. Instead of wood you can use metal support braces specially manufactured to support plumbing pipes.

Attach the short pieces of pipe from the faucet to the existing hot and cold water supply pipes using couplings. If joining two types of pipe, such as steel and copper, use manufactured transition fittings designed to attach the two different types of pipe. Attach the shower head pipe to the faucet.

Install the repair escutcheon plate on the faucet if you're using one. Install the new face plate to will help hold the repair escutcheon in place. Install the faucet handle and the shower head using plumber's tape on any threaded connections. Place a small bead of latex caulk around the outer edge of the escutcheon plates to prevent water leakage.

Turn on the water to the faucet. Check for leaks in new pipe connections and tighten or repair them if necessary. Repair the shower wall if you're not using a repair escutcheon plate. Replace the wall access panel or repair the wall opening on the backside of the shower.

Things You Will Need

  • Utility knife
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Pipe wrench
  • Hack saw
  • Copper tubing cutters
  • Plastic pipe cutting snips
  • Torch
  • Tape measure
  • PEX crimping tool
  • Power drill
  • Hole saw
  • Conversion shower faucet cover plate
  • Plumber's tape
  • Copper pipe
  • PEX pipe
  • Pipe fittings
  • Solder
  • Flux
  • Latex caulk
  • Wood boards for bracing
  • Manufactured plumbing support braces
  • Steel to copper transition fittings

Tip

  • If attaching copper pipes to the new faucet by soldering, first remove the plastic cartridge from the new faucet to prevent damaging it by excessive heat.

Conway selectmen OK 2 shuttle signs for Baths | Local News

Shuttle sign

CONWAY — The owner of Fast Taxi of North Conway says her recently launched shuttle service to Diana's Baths could be successful if it were supported and sufficiently promoted — something that might not be possible given Conway selectmen's insistence on strict adherence to the town's sign regulations.

The popularity of Diana's Baths, which is a series of waterfalls and cascades managed by the U.S. Forest Service, has resulted in overflow parking along West Side Road.

Selectmen were worried that people walking in the road could get hurt, so earlier this year, the town and state posted the road with "no parking" signs, and a $100 fine for parking offenders was implemented.

Now, however, cars are queuing to get in the Forest Service lot, and people are parking up the road and walking down to the site.

To help alleviate the problem, Fast Taxi has begun offering a shuttle service ($6 round-trip) from Eastern Slope Inn and John Fuller School. It will run through Labor Day.

But ridership has been all over the map, Fast Taxi owner Katy Robbart said in a phone interview Wednesday. While Friday had pouring down rain, there were 25 riders Saturday, three Sunday, four on Monday and 34 on Tuesday, which was a surprise, she said.

"If everyone wants it to work, it can work," said Robbart, adding, "I want to do this if people want it. I'm not interested in bucking the tide."

The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce had reached out to Robbart about offering the shuttle.

And at Tuesday's selectmen's meeting, the chamber's executive director, Janice Crawford, pleaded with the board to allow signage to direct tourists to the shuttle.

She called the signage simple "way-finding signs" and said they would be made from recycled political signs.

"We are trying to come up with a solution," said Crawford, who said several signs were placed last week: one near Diana's Baths; one at Pine Street and White Mountain Highway; one at West Side Road and River Road; one on private property at the community lot by the Eastern Slope Inn on River Road; and one on the corner of Route 16 and River Road.

But the sign at Pine Street was removed because it was on a state right-of-way, and the sign near Diana's Baths was removed at the request of the forest service.

Town Manager Tom Holmes said the question was whether to allow temporary signage to help the shuttle service become successful.

Selectman Steve Porter pointed out that the signage described by Crawford would be against town regulations.

"What if Cafe Noche all of a sudden wants to do something along the same lines?" asked Porter. "It opens a Pandora's box."

Town Planner Tom Irving, crediting Public Works Director Paul DegliAngeli, said one solution could be a "way-finding sign program" where the town could add the shuttle service signs to existing ones directing people to Diana's Bath.

"That could be a legitimate governmental purpose that is being served within the town's right of ways," said Irving. "Private property, which Selectman Porter raised, is an issue because if you allow one class of citizen or one group to do this, you would have great difficulty not allowing anybody else to do the same thing."

Irving said the town could "face a constitutional challenge" if it allowed signs for the shuttle and not anyone else.

Crawford said maybe the shuttle service could be considered an event, and that could make the signs legal.

Porter and Crawford sparred over whether visitors to the Baths are a benefit to the town. Porter said the large number of visitors are beating up the Baths, but Crawford insisted the Baths help drives tourism, which builds the tax base.

She then asked selectmen to contact the chamber before making decisions that would affect tourism such as posting the road "no parking."

Board Chairman David Weathers replied that selectmen were addressing a safety issue, and it had nothing to do with tourism.

After a lengthy discussion, selectmen ultimately voted 3-1 to allow a shuttle sign near the existing Diana's Baths sign on River Road at the intersection of West Side Road through 4 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Selectman Mary Carey Seavey was absent, and Selectman Carl Thibodeau voted in the minority.

On Wednesday, Robbart said a shuttle sign was installed at the intersection of River and West Side Roads. She said they also were allowed to have a sandwich board by Eastern Slope Inn.

Robbart said she takes the signs down at the end of each day when the shuttles stop running

At two points in Tuesday's discussion, resident Mark Hounsell, who is also a county commissioner, gave Crawford an earful for adding to the foot traffic at Diana's Baths.

He also criticized her for asking to be informed about meetings that affect tourism. He said she can read the selectmen's agenda like everyone else.

"The people in this town appreciate the businesses in this town; we appreciate the tourist business," said Hounsell. "But they are not the shadow government that some people would have them be."
