Story Hour: Crawdad Creek

Chippewa Nature Center, 400 S. Badour Road, is hosting Story Hour on Aug. 17 for youth, ages 3-5 years, accompanied by an adult. Join in the fun from 9:30 to 10:30 am or from 11 a.m. to noon. Come spend an hour learning about nature. The hour will include a story, crafts, time outdoors and other age-appropriate activities.

Pickling, It Isn't Just for Cucumbers!

Make sure your pickling techniques are up to date. Learn how to successfully and safely prepare pickled foods using a water bath canner. There will be a demonstration using the fresh-pack method, as well as a discussion about fermentation and other pickling methods. This class, set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29, will provide handouts and resources to use at home. Michigan State University Extension - Midland County will host this event at the MSU Extension Learning Center, 220 W. Ellsworth St. (third floor County Services Building). Cost is $10 per participant. Scholarships are available for participants receiving WIC, SNAP and other forms of assistance. Summer Exploration Days - Amphibians

Add a special element to your visit to Chippewa Nature Center this summer by taking part in Summer Exploration Days. This indoor program includes a variety of self-guided, hands-on exploration stations. Families can participate in experiments, learn fun facts, do crafts and try a scavenger hunt. The topics and activities will change bi-weekly. The theme Aug. 2-14 is amphibians and Aug. 16-28 is reptiles. Email info@chippewanaturecenter.org to learn more.

Head Start Preschool Programs

NEMCSA Head Start is a free preschool program for qualifying families with children ages 3 to 4. Head Start also serves children with special needs and/or disabilities. Head Start is a member of the Midland County Regional Preschool Partnership. Complete a preschool interest form online at www.michiganpreschool.org NEMCSA Head Start offers full day and half-day preschool classrooms that run four days a week. Classroom locations in the Midland and Sanford areas include sites at Longview Early Childhood Center, First Baptist Church, Grace Bible Church and Sanford Early Childhood Center.
