Oxbow Brewing Co. is celebrating its sixth anniversary today with a pig roast by Duckfat's new, second location abutting the boutique craft brewery on Washington Avenue in Portland and a burger and fry truck at its 18-acre farm and brewery in Newcastle.

"We have a new beer for the celebration," Tim Adams, founder of Oxbow Blending & Bottling Co. of Portland, told Mainebiz. "It's our flagship Barrel Aged Farmhouse Pale Ale, which is an American Saison aged in a blend of American and French oak barrels." He said Oxbow hasn't released the beer for more than a year because it takes more than one-and-one-half years to make it.

The company produces all its beer in Newcastle, then brings it to Portland to be aged, blended and bottled. The 10,000-square-foot Washington Avenue location also has an indoor bar and eatery with seating, an entertainment area and art displays. He noted Oxbow has a Class A lounge license to let it serve beer and food.

That helps in its new partnership with popular Portland restaurant Duckfat. Duckfat already had been serving Oxbow's beers, which are Belgian style, but was cramped for kitchen space, Duckfat Chef Rob Evans told Mainebiz.

"The production at our restaurant [on Middle Street] was crazy, so we were looking for production space. Tim called us to tell us about the space next to him," said Evans. The original Duckfat is about 1,700 square feet, including kitchen and serving area, and the new space is about the same size, with most of it to be devoted to kitchen and expansion space.

Duckfat was opened in 2005 by Evans and his wife Nancy Pugh. Evans was named "Best Chef Northeast" by the James Beard Foundation in 2009 and is a three-time Food Network Chopped Champion restaurant.

Duckfat, which used the month of July to sporadically open a fry window at the new location to judge traffic, plans to open in late fall, Evans said, and will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and for special events at Oxbow.

Evans and Adams worked for over a year to update and put in stonework and a grill on a patio the two share between their spaces. The patio houses picnic tables where customers of both can eat and drink. In the winter, Duckfat's fry window customers will be able to use Oxbow's indoor eating space.

Evans said Duckfat will only serve fries at the window, but there will be an assortment, including poutine French Canadian fries with gravy and cheese curds.

"This [arrangement] fits perfectly with our Belgian fries and their Belgian beers," Evans said.

For the Aug. 16 celebrations, both tasting rooms open to the public at noon. Newcastle will stay open until 7 p.m. and Portland until 11 p.m.

Spontaneous fermentation

Oxbow is one of the few craft brewers in the country to use a coolship, a long vat that exposes wort to naturally occurring yeast and bacteria so they reproduce faster by consuming sugars. That in turn starts the production of alcohol. It's a process from Belgium known as spontaneous fermentation, which maximizes the surface area so it has the most contact with air. It is typically done in the winter, Adams said.

Oxbow's beer-making process is slow, from six to 18 months, so it can sell beer at a premium, from $12.50 to $17.50. It also has started putting the production time on its bottles and the date it was bottled.

The beer is shipped from Newcastle to Portland for barrel aging, blending and bottling. Adams said Oxbow releases about 40 beers annually, and this year that will include 12 new beers.

The company made just under 50,000 gallons, or about 1,600 barrels in 2016, which puts it at the state's limit for brewers to self-distribute. Oxbow will need to choose a wholesale partner in a year, he said.

The company distributes its own beer now in Maine, but has relationships with distributors and wholesalers in Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Chicago and Washington, D.C. It also has exported beer and collaborated with breweries to make its brews in Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Japan and Canada.

It's overall focus is on steady but slow growth, and to be part of the local community, Adams said. Oxbow has about 30 employees in both locations.

In 2018, it plans to slowly grow production.

"We don't want to become a large-capacity brewer," he said. "We aim to make 4,000 to 5,000 barrels a year as a result of slow, steady growth."

Currently, it produces Belgian- and French-style farmhouse ales and one pilsner.

"Different tastes aren't a priority for everyone," Adams said of other craft brewers. "We focus on making new flavors in the realm of farmhouse ales." Some of the flavor comes from the honey bees at the Newcastle farm, along with cherries, strawberries, raspberries, elderberries and blueberries grown there. He also farms his own pigs for the pig roasts.

The controlled growth also relates to the company's funding. It initial was funded with a $400,000 equity round to friends and family, and last year the company brought in $150,000 of a $1 million round focused on buying out an existing partner.

"We are very selective about our business partners," Adams said, referring to the amount remaining to be raised. He doesn't like talking about money matters, so he declined to specify the amount of loans the company has with Bath Savings bank, nor the total investment to date or revenue. He would only say the company is profitable.

"For us it's about how to keep producing beers and be a center of culture in our community," he said. "That's what the reward is for us."

Too many craft brewers?

There have been a series of craft brewer acquisitions outside Maine in recent months. Anheuser-Busch InBev bought its 10th craft brewer in early May, Wicked Weed Brewing of North Carolina. On Aug. 10 Constellation Brands, the parent company of Corona, bought Florida's Funky Buddha. In early August Japan's Sapporo bought San Francisco's Anchor Brewing. And on the consolidation front, San Francisco craft brewer New Belgium Brewing bought Magnolia Brewing, also of San Francisco.

"Maine hasn't seen acquisitions of craft breweries, but it certainly will happen," he predicted. "There's not that much room left in bars and breweries in terms of shelf space." He said the industry consolidation will up the competition, which he sees as a good thing.

Wow - it's cold outside. Not freeze-your-false-lashes-off cold, perhaps, but still seriously chilly. And it's no fun, especially when you're standing around for hours filming on location.

I'm starting to worry that I may spend the whole of this season of MIC with dry skin and a drip on the end of my nose - definitely not a good look.

So earlier this week, as soon as filming wrapped for the day, I decided to trade MIC for TLC and treat myself to a real beauty treat. One of my favouritepastimes is locking the door on the rest of the world, taking the phone of the hook, and really pampering myself.

I'm lucky enough to have a really luxurious feminine bathroom in my house. It's so lovely that my housemates and I, two of my best female friends, are always fighting for bathroom time. I'm starting to think about drawing up a bathroom rota just so I don't get one of the girls knocking on the doors as I dip my toe in the scented water.

Luckily, I found out that the others would both be out on Tuesday evening, so the minute I arrived home from work, I knew I had hours of indulgent Binky-time ahead of me.

I started by dimming the lights and filling the bathroom with gorgeous scented candles. There are tons of delicious ones to choose from, and I'm a real fan. In spring I go for light, girlish floral candles; in summer I burn zesty citrus flavours, but in winter I like to fill my home with really lush green scents and woody spiced fragrances.

Next I filled my bath right to the brim with steaming water and bath oil. I have to admit that my shelves are heaving with lovely bath time lotions and potions. I'm a complete beauty addict - in case you hadn't guessed - and I can't resist splashing out of scrumptious scents and smellies. But there are two bathing classics that I return to time after time.

I'd had just the sort of day that called for a real pick-me-up soak, so out came the Clarins. Once I'd warmed up and relaxed in my steamy, scented bath for an hour,  it was time for a little bit of body work. The mixture of cold weather and hot central heating can leave my skin feeling really dull and dry so I use a body scrub religiously during the winter months. Candles create an air of relaxation in a bathroom- but picking the right scent is important

For head-to-toe beauty sessions like this one, however, I like to layer up a single scent, as different fragranced products can lead to a perfume clash. Most of the big-name brands produce full body ranges for their fragrances - everything from deodorant sprays, hand creams and body lotions to shampoos and conditioners. And of course there's the actual scent itself.

This time I chose Dolce & Gabbana Rose The One, which has a Perfumed Shower Gel, a Perfumed Body Lotion and a Perfumed Shimmer Powder, all featuring the deliciously feminine fragrance that mixes fruity top notes, with a central bouquet of peony, lily, lychee and Bulgarian rose. I've recently bought an 80s house & moved in & have a tight budget for updating. Having never renovated, I would appreciate any feedback on how I can best update the vanity. Advice from tradies so far includes replacing 1600mm vanity will mean retiling vanity area which then flows through to sep toilet, bath & shower. If retiling complete area, advised I should replace shower screen & bath at the same time, a week+ without bathroom & various trades involved. As I only have this bathroom & I'm unwell, I was really hoping to just update vanity, taps etc & have tried various resurfacing companies who don't service my regional location. Would love ideas if anyone has them.

Your bathroom might be the smallest room in the house, but it’s easy for a refurbishing budget to spiral out of control. So how to make your money go further without compromising on style? Affordable products, reining in additional costs and ensuring your design works hard all help to stretch a budget. Start by working out which areas are worth investing in and where you can be thrifty, as well as the finishing touches that will take your project to the next level.

Where to spend

Shopping online makes it feel as if there are bargains to be had, but some buys are better value than others. Most experts agree that good brassware is worth the investment, especially if replacing valves further down the line means damaging walls to access them. ‘Taps are the only true mechanical component, so durability and reliability are key,’ says Phil Etherden, managing director at The Albion Bath Company (01255 831 605; albionbathco.com). ‘Remember that the fitting costs of expensive or bargain products will be the same, and that if you buy cheap, you buy twice.’ Spend on showers, too. They need to be able to withstand daily use, and they could save money on water and energy bills if they have eco settings or are thermostatic.

It’s also worth allocating some of your budget to storage. Buy units that are durable – essential when you consider how many times a day doors and drawers will be opened.

Where to save

Timeless white sanitaryware tends to be inexpensive, but do check its quality. ‘It’s vital to shop carefully as there are low-cost imports that will not give long service,’ says Howard Birch, director at Aston Matthews (020 7226 7220; astonmatthews.co.uk). ‘Cheap ceramicware can have bubbles and faults that result in stains or cracks, while bargain cast-iron baths may have a thin enamel finish that will chip.’ The style of sanitaryware will also affect fitting costs: although wall-hung designs look striking, they may need false walls to conceal brackets, so floorstanding items can be more economical.

Mixing affordable buys with pricier elements will give your design a high-end feel. ‘If you’ve found an expensive tile that you love, try incorporating it as an accent alongside a neutral, cheaper tile to get a luxurious look,’ says James Holt, co-founder of Holt (020 8878 2555; holtgroup.co.uk). ‘Similarly, think about how you use materials. Granite countertops come with a hefty price tag, but you can save by buying a slab with imperfections that can be hidden by your basin or taps.’

Low-profile shower trays are a way to create the style of a wet room without the cost of tanking, while framed enclosures are cheaper than frameless. If you’re including a tub, there is a wide range of good-value and sized-down acrylic baths. Available in many shapes, they are low maintenance, keep water warmer for longer and often come in design-led styles.

What’s new?

A wider choice of products makes creating the look you want more achievable. ‘For example, developments in the manufacture of acrylic have allowed for a more affordable alternative to cast iron, copper and tin previously used to make freestanding baths,’ says Tina Robinson, product manager at Heritage Bathrooms (0330 026 8503; heritagebathrooms.com). ‘We can now apply a more detailed design concept, including different lacquered finishes, plus it’s a lighter material, meaning no floor reinforcement is required.’

Technologies that have previously been the preserve of high-end bathrooms are starting to filter into the middle market. These include integral lighting, Bluetooth speakers, rimless WCs, charging sockets, colour-changing LEDs, de-misting functions and digital technologies. ‘Certain digital showers come with wireless controls, which gives more  exibility on the location of the shower valve,’ says Chris Taylor, a designer at Bristan (0330 026 6273; bristan.com).

In high-end bathrooms, luxurious finishes such as black and rose-gold brassware and silk-matt surfaces are becoming more popular. Ultra-thin edges for basins and baths, fully flush shower surfaces and pared-back cabinetry are the newest additions to many ranges, with composites and metallic finishes allowing adventurous shapes.

Home goods retailer Anna’s Linens — which made its local debut less than three years ago — is closing three of its seven stores in Puerto Rico, this media outlet confirmed Tuesday.

The three stores to end operations by Sunday are in Plaza del Atlántico in Arecibo, Plaza Río Hondo in Bayamón and Rexville Plaza, which was the newest location the Costa Mesa, Ca.-based retailer had opened in Puerto Rico since it arrived to the retail market in 2012.

Stores in Trujillo Alto, Caguas, Ponce and Mayagüez will remain open, this media outlet learned.

The retailer’s product mix comprises bedding, bath, window treatments, shower curtains, kitchen curtain, down comforters and bath accessories, among other things.

Q: My 1920s Ravenna home has a slow-running bathtub drain. The sink and toilet do just fine, as do the other drains in the house. I have cleaned the screen that I leave in the drain, and there is no mechanical handle or linkage to be catching hair and slowing the water down. I use a removable rubber plug when I take a bath instead.

I have tried every kind of drain cleaner known to man, and have even run a plumber's snake through via the overflow. The snake stops about 6 or 8 feet downstream.

Wanting to see what the obstruction was, I went into the unfinished basement beneath the bathroom where the snake stops. Looking up toward the tub, I saw a device a little larger than a Coke can, with one lead-colored pipe from the tub leading into it, and another on the opposite side, but higher, draining toward the main sewer drain. It looks original to the home, or at least very old.

This Coke-can thing clearly is the source of my obstruction. Coincidentally, it's located directly over the main electrical panel and has a fitting for a pipe wrench on the bottom.

Could this be a removable clean-out? Can I open it to remove the obstruction? And if so, how do I keep from electrocuting myself or getting a sewage shower — or both simultaneously?

A: Your Coke can is most definitely not drinkable; it is called a "drum trap." Drum traps are used in older buildings beneath tubs rather than the typical U-shaped P-trap you see under sinks, or newer tubs.

As a point of reference, your toilet has an internal trap (also called a trap seal). A trap is a low area in a drain that continually has water in it, thus preventing sewage smells, methane and other gases from entering the home.

In my elementary-school days, I specifically remember gas traveling through water. In the tub. Every time. So naturally, I have doubts about the presumed accuracy of the science here, but let's move on.

So, traps are the most commonly plugged area in a drain. Drum traps are not "self-cleaning" like P-traps. A modern P-trap (theoretically) flushes all the hair, dirt and other debris down the drain.

Drum traps by their very design must be cleaned manually because the pipe feeding it is below the pipe draining it. It is difficult enough to move a clog downhill through a smooth pipe, much less uphill and around a corner.

When the tub runs slowly, don rubber gloves, put a clothespin on your nose, remove the cap and pull all your composted hair and soap scum from the trap. Replace the cap and the deal is done — until it runs slowly again.

Ninety-nine out of 100 times, the clean-out for the drum trap is located in the floor of the bathroom next to, or very close to, the tub. You simply kneel on the floor to do the deed.

Occasionally, the clean-out cap gets covered by a sloppy remodel or flooring job and is no longer accessible. The clean-out for your house for some reason is mounted upside down and accessible from the basement, so maybe the plumber was a sadist.

When you pop the cap, you will get drenched in sewage, and so will the electrical panel, as you point out. I suppose you could configure some elaborate plastic sheeting contraption to protect the electric panel, the walls and the floor, cocoon yourself in a body condom and pop open your little box of stinky, but why?

Every time you get a clog, you will need to go through the same biohazard routine. Not worth it in my book.

Instead, get two helpers and have one stand with a bucket and the other hold the plumbing steady. Take a Sawzall with a metal cutting blade and hack the drum trap completely out.

Cut out all the plumbing from the base of the tub to just past the drain side of the old location of your drum trap. Then add a modern self-cleaning trap and vent. Yeah, you may want to have a plumber do this.

To follow up on another intriguing topic ...

Several weeks ago, I mentioned a cat I found in a new home's crawlspace.

Despite the best efforts of several people for hours, the cat ran, hid very well and was not located.

The builder placed a live trap in the crawl space and baited it with wet cat food. After two more days, the cat wandered toward the food and was trapped and made it out in good health.
