Read article : Fireworks Cruise - Review of Disney's Yacht Club Resort, Orlando
After dinner at Cape May Cafe, we went on a fire works cruise on a pontoon boat. Jerry gave us a Magical Moment and we were so surprised by his generosity and we were shocked by his kindness. Jerry commandeered the boat and he was the most friendly and knowledgeable Disney employee I have ever come in contact with. Jerry kept us informed of all of the safety procedures on the boat and what we could and could not do.
First we got a tour of the area surrounding the boardwalk and Jerry pointed out tips about the different bars and restaurants. Then we went over to Epcot and parked next to five other boats and had an amazing and extremely exciting view of the Epcot fireworks. Jerry even help take some pictures of us while the fireworks were going off. He also provided information about Epcot that we did not know.
The boat had snacks and beverages on it that you could eat and drink, and even take when you get off if you wanted. Then Jerry asked if we wanted to see the Star Wars fireworks and Hollywood Studios and we motored over there. Jerry pointed out facts about the hotels along the way and some of the rides at Hollywood Studios. We first saw the end of Fantasmic through some trees, and got there right when Mickey was coming out.
Then we faced the entrance of Hollywood Studios and saw the Star Wars fireworks. It was a totally different view than from watching it inside the park, but we loved it. This entire experience was absolutely fantastic and Jerry was the reason why it was a complete and wonderful Magical Experience & Moment. Anyone who has the chance to have Jerry take them on a fireworks cruise will be totally and completely satisfied and happy. Ask for Jerry if you ever take a fireworks cruise from the Yacht and Beach Club.

Read article : Mid-size SUV Test: Mazda CX-5 vs Ford Escape vs VW Tiguan
THE evidence is there on every street. Compact SUVs have become our preferred means of carrying kids and cargo - and new arrivals just keep coming.
Mazda has just brought out a new model of the CX-5, Australia's top selling SUV for the past four years.
Ford has facelifted the Kuga and renamed it with the global Escape badge.
We're running them against the award-winning Volkswagen Tiguan.
Ford Escape
Ford Escape
This is Ford's third attempt in five years at cracking the compact SUV segment.
There are more variants, from $34,000 drive-away to $53,535 drive-away.
We have the Trend 1.5 front-driver, the middle of the range, which is $39,050 drive-away as tested (including a $1300 safety pack and $550 for metallic paint).
The new name also brings a new nose and engine, plus an impressive list of advanced - but optional - safety tech. Standard are seven airbags, rear camera (with guiding lines that turn) and rear sensors.
The safety pack adds automatic emergency braking (which now works from 50km/h rather than 30kmh), radar cruise control, lane keeping assistance, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot warning. These options take the Trend from the least equipped to the best among this trio.
Update items also include Apple Car Play and Android Auto, built-in navigation with traffic alerts and digital radio joins AM/FM.
The Trend comes with push-button start, electronic park brake, cruise control (with speed limiter), auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers and privacy glass, among other mod-cons.
A power tailgate adds $1200.
The cabin is basic but practical; the others have a more up-market appearance but less tech.
Deft touches: digital speed display, dual zone aircon, two USB ports, a 12V socket and four map lights - plus a light and 12V socket in the cargo area, which expands from 406L to 1603L.
The rear seat splits 60-40. The seat back angle can be adjusted but the base doesn't slide forward. As with the others, there are two Isofix child seat anchor points and three top tether mounts.
The 1.5 turbo petrol engine replaces the 1.6 turbo that was recalled a fortnight ago following a spate of fires, including seven in Australia. It's an economical engine with plenty of oomph - and costs about half as much to service as the others. As with many modern engines, it demands premium unleaded.
These aren't supposed to be race cars but we checked their 0-100kmh times as an indicator of how they'll haul the family in the daily grind.
The Escape - slightly faster than the VW Tiguan and one second quicker to the speed limit than the Mazda CX-5 - handles corners confidently, but the suspension can get a bit busier than the others over bumps. At times, the steering feels too sharp for the size and weight of the car.
Mazda CX-5
Mazda CX-5
Mazda expands the range to four model grades - from $34,500 drive-away to $54,700 drive-away.
We have the Maxx Sport (the second model up) 2.0 petrol front-drive at $38,400 drive-away.
Mazda loads the new model with the most standard safety kit of the trio, including automatic emergency braking (front and rear), rear cross traffic alert and blind zone warning. This is in addition to six airbags, a rear view camera and rear sensors.
Apple Car Play and Android Auto are still not available but built-in navigation is standard on this grade. The tablet-style display in the dash looks classy but is not a touchscreen.
The cabin has an up-market feel but the door pockets are smaller than the others, there's no digital speed display, and the guiding lines on the rear camera don't turn.
The driver's side mirror is not convex, so it's hard to see traffic in the adjacent lane. I'd prefer a wider view rather than rely on a small warning light in the corner of the mirror.
Unique among this trio, the rear seat splits 40-20-40 and can be dropped via a lever in the cargo area. The seat back angle can be adjusted but the base does not slide forward. Cargo capacity is 442L/1342L.
On the move the Mazda is quieter than before - finally muting its road noise on par with rivals.
Performance from the non-turbo 2.0 is similar to these peers. Helpfully, it takes regular unleaded.
A downside: the CX-5 is the dearest of this trio to service.
The new CX-5 steers well, with a plush and almost cushy ride, rather than the razor-sharp feeling of its predecessor.
VW Tiguan
VW Tiguan
Despite its premium price, the Tiguan is selling at twice the rate of the Escape and Honda CR-V and is closing the gap on the Subaru Forester.
The range stretches from $39,100 drive-away to $54,580 drive-away. We tested the 110TSI Trendline DSG front-drive, at $39,900 drive-away including $700 for metallic paint.
Standard fare includes automatic emergency braking, rear camera with guiding lines that turn, front and rear parking sensors, large touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but not built-in navigation.
Radar cruise control and lane keeping assistance (optional on all Escapes and standard on the top grade CX-5) are not available as an option on this grade.
The Tiguan has the most spacious cabin and the biggest storage pockets. As with the others it has rear air vents. Unlike the others, it has single zone aircon.
The Tiguan is the only one among this trio with a sliding back seat - to create a larger cargo area (from 615L to 1665L with the seats down) as well as seat back angle adjustment.
Its 1.4 turbo, the smallest of the three, does the job, albeit on premium unleaded.
The twin clutch automatic gearbox takes half a second or so to engage but you soon learn to adapt your driving style and release the brake pedal a little sooner.
Its biggest asset is the way it drives. The Tiguan has the most precise steering and handling feel, and yet it's also the most comfortable over bumps. That's a gratifying double act.
Verdict
Escape vs CX-5 vs Tiguan
The Escape, though more compelling than previously, doesn't drive quite as well as the others and isn't as well presented inside. If the optional safety pack were fitted standard, it would have aced this test.
Still a class act, the Tiguan is the best here for space, comfort, practicality and driving feel. But the competition has caught up with more standard features for the money.
With its impressive list of standard safety gear, up-market interior and greater refinement, the CX-5 Maxx Sport wins this round. Undercutting the others on price is a bonus.

Read article : Underappreciated Star-Shaped Brain Cells May Help Us Breathe
Astrocytes, it was long believed, were little more than the scaffolding of the brain—they provided a support structure for the stars of the show, the neurons. But a study out in this week’s Science is the latest to suggest that this is far from the whole story. The study says that astrocytes (whose “astro” name come from their star-shape) may in fact play a critical role in the process of breathing.
Astrocytes are a type of glial cell — the most common type of brain cell, and far more abundant than neurons. “Historically, glial cells were only thought to ‘glue’ the brain together, providing neuronal structure and nutritional support but not more,” explains physiologist Alexander Gourine of University College London, one of the authors of the study. “This old dogma is now changing dramatically; a few recent studies have shown that astrocytes can actually help neurons to process information” [Nature].
Gourine’s team peeked into the brains of rats to figure out the connection between astrocytes and breathing. In humans and in rodents, the level of carbon dioxide in the blood rises after physical activity. The brain has to adjust to this, setting the lungs breathing harder to expel that CO2.
Astrocytes, the scientists found, are key players in this process. When the cells sensed a decrease in blood pH (because the carbon dioxide made it more acidic), they immediately released calcium ions, which the researchers could detect because they’d given the rats a gene encoding a protein that shone fluorescent in the presence of calcium. The astrocytes also released the chemical messenger ATP. That ATP appeared to trigger the nearby neurons responsible for respiration, kicking them into gear.
The astrocytes are no one-trick ponies, though. They could be important not only for breathing, but also for brain circulation, memory formation, and other activities.
The next step is to find a way to inhibit astrocytes in vivo, said Gourine. Then, researchers will be able to test the numerous hypotheses for the functions of astrocytes in the brain. It is likely astrocytes in various regions of the brain serve different functions, said [Cendra] Agulhon, just as many different types of neurons do many different jobs. “Depending on where they are and what kind of neurons they are surrounded by, they will function differently,” she added. “We are just starting to understand how important astrocytes can be” [The Scientist].

1. Re: Vienna hotel room with open bathroom (no shower curtain)
I always go for a hotel with a shower because I don't like lying in a tub (like a pig in a wallow!) but I haven't encountered any Viennese hotels that offer showers with a shower curtain.
Most of the mid-range hotels I've stayed in seem to have shower cubicles with sliding or folding glass or plastic doors. Some are more roomy than others! If you have a shower over a bath, you often have this glass panel thingy which folds back if you want to use the tub, but which can be opened out to form a wall when using the shower.
I have no idea of the technical term for these panel thingies, but I think if you got a room with a shower over a bathtub, you would be likely to get something like this.
I've encountered this sort of bathroom in Hotel Alma (www.hotelalma.com) and Hotel Pertschy (www.pertschy.com). Alma has very swishy modern bathrooms. Some rooms have the tub with shower over and the glass panel, and other rooms have spacious shower boxes, with glass doors. Pertschy has tubs with showers in the superior rooms, I believe, and smallish glass shower boxes in the standard rooms. If you explained what you want I am sure they could provide you with a suitable room.

Read article : Cindy updates her 50s bathroom vanity, tile floor and shower
Last week we looked at Cindy’s beautiful Holyoke, Mass., home – photos I took last summer. Today – we get to see the updates that she made to her bathroom vanity and tile floor and shower over the winter – she replaced the laminate on the bathroom vanity in a lighter ‘beigewood” shade, and also retiled her floor and shower stall. Cindy’s updates are incredibly well done – she has a great eye for detail and I know that she labored over each little decision…. Great inspiration and ideas, I am sure, to many retro renovators looking for a way to update their tired bathroom vanities, in particular.
Cindy writes:
Hi Pam,
Since you were here I redid the tiles and laminate cabinet in the bathroom…. Fiorella Cosgrove of Cortina Tile in West Springfield, MA was the only tile advisor who “got” my desire to be retro and I could not have done it without her and highly recommend them.(Corina Tile;1645 Riverdale St.; West Springfield MA 01089).
- The old laminate was stripped off and replaced with Wilsonart laminate-the color is beigewood #7850-60.
- The hardware was purchased at Re-Store for a super awesome $10.
- I also got a new soap dish to match the existing ones – that came from ebay and it is the Hall-Mack polished chrome …Coronado series. A local hardware store with 50 years of old inventory provided me some items from the same line and of course I have extras…even a towel rack I couldn’t resist and haven’t used yet.
- The bathroom pendants are original BUT the canopies were brass – I found a local guy to chrome them for me so they would match all other metal in the bathroom. the toilet, sinks, and tub are original.
- I’ll be looking to replace the Church toilet seat very soon if I can find the same color.
- The shower tiles are 6″x6″, made by Original Style in England, color is Ecru.
- The floor tiles are 2″x2″ Dal-Tile color is elemental tan with sporadic 1″ x1″ tiles color urban putty. (Size created by tile installer by cutting 2×2 tiles in quarters…this give extra texture and was recommended by Cortina Tile).
The project brightened up the bathroom and remained true to the 1960’s!!! PS, do you notice the cabinet hardware from Re-Store???? Hope to see you this summer for a Re-Store rerun~
Cindy
Read article : Industrial Crane Turned into a Private Retreat
Seems that unique remodeling and repurposing projects are popping up everywhere lately, which is a good thing. And this one is every bit as cool as the helicopter turned into a hotel. it is an old industrial crane, which was once used for loading coal, that has been transformed into a private retreat. The project was undertaken by the Copenhagen-based firm Arcgency and is located in the city’s harbor. The aptly named Krane features a luxury multi-floor interior, complete with a spa, meeting room, and a private apartment at the top. It also features a lot of outdoor terrace space.
The first floor of the Krane houses the main entrance and reception area, which seems to have been made out of a recycled shipping container. V set of stairs leads up to the second floor where the meeting area is located. There is ample glazing in this area to create a very light-filled space.
The next level up is accessible via another staircase. This is where the large terrace and spa are located. The latter features several baths and a shower, and has windows that let in lots of light and offer great views of Copenhagen’s Nordhavn harbor.
The private sleeping quarters are located at the top of the structure, and measure 538 sq ft (50 sq m). They can be used to accommodate up to two people. The interior walls are black and the small apartment features a lounge, a kitchenette, a dining table, a double bed, and a bathroom. This area also has its own private terrace. One of the main aims of the designers was to maximize the amount of natural light entering the retreat, and they achieved this by installing ample glazing throughout.
The spa, meeting room and private retreat on the top floor can all be rented out separately, but there is no word yet on how much this will cost. This information will most likely be released soon, though.
